Once you begin to eat potato chips, you may keep eating until the bag is empty. Have you ever experienced this Why can’t you stop eating these salty chips Scientists said it is due to a kind of neuron (神经元).
Scientists at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston have found that some neurons can make us want to eat salt.
The neurons take note of whether our bodies are lacking sodium (钠), a main part of salt. Then, they send signals (信号) to our brain to encourage us to eat more salt, according to the Daily Mail.
How do these neurons work
Scientists did experiments on mice. They found that when mice lack sodium, their body gives off a kind of hormone (荷尔蒙) called aldosterone (醛固酮). This hormone then makes these neurons become active.
More research showed that adding salt to meals makes people enjoy their food more, Time magazine reported. This may cause people to continue eating even if they are full.
Scientists from Deakin University in Australia asked healthy people to eat the same food for lunch for four weeks. The amount of salt in the food was changed each week. At the same time, the scientists measured how much these people ate. They also asked the people how they felt about the meals; for example, if they felt happy or were still hungry after eating.
The results showed that salt made people eat 11 percent more food and calories. When eating low-salt meals, they had better control over how much they ate. “But when we add salt to that food, all of a sudden those controls are gone,” researcher Russell Keast said to Time.
( )8. We may find it hard to stop eating potato chips mainly because _____
A. potato chips don’t have much sodium B. potato chips send hungry signals to our brain
C. some neurons lead to a preference for salty foods D. people’s brains will be more active with more salt
( )9. Scientists from Deakin University found that _____.
A. mice also need salt B. more salt makes people eat more
C.not all people like salty food D. people are not happy when they eat less
( )10. What advice might the writer give
A. People should eat more chips. B. More salt should be taken in to stay healthy.
C.Salt can make food more delicious. D. Low-salt meals can help us stay healthy.
( )11. You might see this story in _____.
A. a road map B. a math report C. a science magazine D. a storybook

Are you suffering from insomnia(失眠)now It’s true that many people are deeply bothered by insomnia. ___12___ Sleep expert Michael Grandner offers top three tips.
Make a plan and stick to it.
Melatonin(褪黑素)is produced by the body to control when you get sleepy and when you wake up. As night falls, the levels of melatonin rise, becoming a signal to the body that it’s time for bed. And the levels naturally fall as daylight comes near, getting you ready to greet the day.
___13___ So if your bedtime and wake-up time change from day to day, your body doesn’t know how to react. So it’s important to have a regular bedtime and wake-up time, even on weekends.
___14___
In fact, this tip is so powerful that it can even beat sleep medicine. “Whenever you’ve been awake for 20 or 30 minutes, either the beginning or the middle of the night, get up. Maybe you just need five minutes to get sleepy, or maybe an hour, but don’t spend that time in bed,” says Grandner.
Change your attitude about sleep.
Many people see sleeping as the final thing they have to do in a busy day, worth delaying to catch up on housework, schoolwork or others. ___15___ “See your sleep as the amount of time you need in order to set yourself up for a productive tomorrow. It may sound like a small change, but it’s an important one,” Grandner adds.
A. Don’t lie in bed awake.
B. The release(释放)of melatonin needs to be at regular times.
C. That thought needs to be changed.
D. In fact, we can train our brain to fall asleep.

Save the world’s trees
“When it comes to the Earth, there is no time to waste,” says the Earth Day Network. And that is right.Protecting our environment is very important, and World Earth Day was created in 1970 to ask more people to protect our environment. On April 22,people around the world celebrate Earth Day.
Every year there is a special topic, and this year it is “Trees for the Earth”,so Earth Day this year will be all about planting trees. They are planning to plant 7.8 billion trees within the next five years.
That’s a big goal, and you might wonder why trees are so important.Because they can take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and protect the air quality(质量).CO2 is a chemical in our atmosphere, but humans make too much of it.Each person makes about 2.3 tons a year, which is bad for the environment.
Well , guess what!Planting new trees is important because people cut down a huge number of trees.Last year, there were 3 trillion trees in the world, about 139 billion in China. But according to China Daily, the world’s total number has been almost cut in half since human civilization(文明) began. That’s because 15 billion trees are cut down every year.
So we need to plant more to make up for(弥补)the ones we lost. One tree can take in 21.8 kilograms of CO2 per year. And it’s still one of the cheapest and best ways to get rid of CO2. But don’t forget that we can also help the environment by cutting down on how much energy(能源) or water we use every day.Every little thing helps.
任务一:根据短文内容,回答问题。

4.How much CO2 can two trees take in each year

5.Translate the sentence “And it’s still one of the cheapest and best ways to get rid of CO2.” into Chinese.

If you spend some time in an English-speaking country, you might hear the term “etiquette”(礼节). It means normal and polite social behavior(行为). This may seem like a difficult word at first, but it can be very useful to understand.
Etiquette is not the same in every culture or in every situation. For example, standing very close to the person you are talking with is quite common in some Asian(亚洲) countries. However,if you do this in Europe, some people might feel uncomfortable. Even in China,we all know that etiquette is not the same in all situations. Perhaps we think that talking loudly in our own homes is fine, but there are other places where talking loudly is not allowed. For example, most people would agree that talking loudly in a library,a museum or a movie theater is impolite. (A).Even if you are with your friends,it is better to keep your voice down in public places.
If we see someone breaking the rules of etiquette,we may politely give them some suggestions. One of the most polite ways is to ask someone,Would you mind doing this or Would you mind not doing that. People don’t usually like to be criticized (批评),so we have to be careful how we do this.
(B).Although rules of etiquette can often be different, some rules are the same almost everywhere in the world! For example, dropping litter (扔垃圾)is almost never allowed. If you see someone you know doing this, you can ask him,“Would you mind picking (C) it up?”

( C )8. We may find it hard to stop eating potato chips mainly because _____

C.Salt can make food more delicious. D. Low-salt meals can help us stay healthy.

Are you suffering from insomnia(失眠)now It’s true that many people are deeply bothered by insomnia. ___12_D __ Sleep expert Michael Grandner offers top three tips.
___13_B__ So if your bedtime and wake-up time change from day to day, your body doesn’t know how to react. So it’s important to have a regular bedtime and wake-up time, even on weekends.
___14__A_
In fact, this tip is so powerful that it can even beat sleep medicine.
___15_C__ “See your sleep as the amount of time you need in order to set yourself up for a productive tomorrow.

“When it comes to the Earth , there is no time to waste,” says the Earth Day Network.
And it’s still one of the cheapest and best ways to get rid of (清除)CO2. But don’t forget that we can also help the environment by cutting down on how much energy(能源) or water we use every day.Every little thing helps.

An Interesting Experience
Last Sunday,I saw a box fall off a man's bike when I was walking to the cinema. I shouted to the man to stop him, but he didn’t hear me and rode away. Then I stopped a taxi and got into it with the box. Soon we caught up with the man and returned the box to him. The man thanked me and wanted to give me some money, but I refused it politely. Then the driver took me to the cinema. When I was going to pay, the driver said,“I won’t accept your money, either."
