Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would know that trouble was coming. In fact, trouble was on its way for every strong dog with warm long hair. This was because men, going through the Arctic (北极) darkness, had discovered a yellow metal—gold. And because shipping and transportation companies were advertising the discovery, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted heavy dogs with strong muscles for working and thick coats to protect them from the cold.
Buck lived at Judge Miller’s house in the sunny-kissed Santa Clara Valley. There were big stables (马厩), long grape fields, fruit gardens and a big swimming pool. Buck ruled over the whole kingdom. Here he was born and here he had lived the four years of his life. He protected the judge’s sons and daughters on long midnight or early morning walks. On cold winter nights, he lay at the judge’s feet in front of the warm library fire. He was the king—King over everything at Judge Miller’s place, including humans.
Buck was this kind of dog in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike pulled men from all over the world into the frozen North. But Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that Manuel, one of the gardener’s helpers, was not to be trusted. Manuel loved to gamble (赌博). He believed he could win, but he was doomed (注定) to failure.
On the night of Manuel’s betrayal (背叛), no one saw him and Buck go off through the fields. Buck imagined it to be a relaxing walk. They arrived at a little train. A man talked with Manuel and money was passed between them. Manuel tied a piece of thick rope around Buck’s neck. Buck accepted it quietly. To be sure, it was unwanted, but Buck had learned to trust the men he knew. However, when the ends of the rope were placed in the stranger’s hands, he barked. Then the rope tightened (收紧) painfully, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. Then his strength disappeared, his eyes grew dim (模糊的), and he knew nothing when the train pulled up. Two men threw him into the luggage van.
1.Why were thousands of men rushing into the Northland

B.Because they could live a better life there.

D.Because they wanted to enjoy the beautiful views there.

A.The judge’s family betrayed him, so he ran away quietly.
B.He had lived in Judge Miller’s house since he was born.
C.Life before the autumn of 1897 was enjoyable for him.
D.Manuel could take him out of Miller’s house because he trusted Manuel.

All over the world, people find giraffes amazing. The giraffe is the tallest animal in the world. Its legs and tail are taller than most people. Its tongue is very long, 18 inches. The front part of its tongue is an unusual color, black. Unlike most other large animals, giraffes do not threaten (威胁) people. Yet to many scientists the most amazing thing about this gentle giant is its heart.
To understand how amazing the giraffe’s heart is, put your head lower than your heart. Keep it there for a few minutes. Then lift your head up very quickly. Do you feel dizzy This is the effect of a change in blood pressure. The heart has to quickly pump blood to your brain to stop you from feeling dizzy or from fainting.
When a giraffe lifts its head up from the ground, it has to lift its 250-kilo neck more than 15 feet in the air. How can it do this without fainting The giraffe’s heart is really large. It is almost two feet long and weighs about 10 kilos. It can pump 60 liters of blood in a minute. The large artery (动脉) that carries blood from the heart up the long neck of the giraffe is also unusual because it has a muscle in it. This muscle helps keep the giraffe’s blood pressure.
In 1988, a writer, Michael Allin, learned that a giraffe arrived in Marseille, a city in the south of France, in 1826. It was a gift to the king of France Charles X. He decided to go to Ethiopia, in East Africa, where the giraffe was born. He traveled to Egypt on the Nile River. This was the same way the giraffe came to Egypt where he discovered the reason for the gift. Muhammad Ali, an important Egyptian leader, did not want the French to enter a war. He sent the giraffe to King Charles X.
However, it was difficult to transport a giraffe in 1826. It traveled from Egypt to France on a ship. The giraffe was so tall that it couldn’t fit in the lower deck of the ship. This was quite a problem until someone decided to cut a hole in the top deck of the ship. The giraffe’s legs were below, and its long neck came up through the hole.
No one knew how to get such a large animal from Marseille to Paris, so the giraffe had to walk the 880 kilometers. All along the way, people came to watch the gentle giant. Six weeks after it left Marseille, the giraffe finally arrived in Paris, where 100,000 people came to see this amazing creature. Today, we still look at the giraffe in amazement. There is no other animal like it on earth.
1.What is unusual about the artery in a giraffe’s neck
A.It has a muscle in it. B.It has an unusual colour.
C.It weighs 10 kilos. D.It carries blood to the legs.

Most of us have never thought about building an educational toy by ourselves. If we need a learning toy or something, we simply go to the nearest store and buy it. However, things are not as easy in third world countries. With families even having no food to put on the table, buying toys, especially the educational ones, is the last thing on the parents’ minds.
So how can one get these kids interested in science This was a question that worried the Indian engineer Arvind Gupta so much that he decided to give up a good job and spend his life making toys from things that people no longer want or need!
Mr. Gupta began teaching in the 1970s. While still an engineering student at the Indian College of Technology, he volunteered to teach the children who could not afford to go to school. Upon graduation, he found a good job at India’s Tata Motors and spent the next five years designing cars.
But he soon realized that this was not something he wanted to do for the rest of his life. So he took a year’s training course and took part in the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Program whose aim was to make science fun and exciting for poor children using available materials.
Mr. Gupta found the whole project so satisfying that he decided to leave his high-paying job and focus his attention on designing educational toys that were not only cheap and easy to build, but are also full of scientific principles (科学原理), so that children could get interested in this interesting subject.
When the Internet started becoming a more widespread learning tool, Mr. Gupta created a Toys from Trash website and also recorded more than 250 YouTube videos.
Today, over 50, 000 children and teachers visit the website daily to download the videos for the toy creations based on cool science. Some young children have become so inspired (鼓舞) that they have even won international science competitions with the help of what he created.

With the popularity of live streaming, more and more people like to share their lives on the Internet. Some show tasty food they are eating, some show places they are visiting or activities they are having and others show their special talents.
In fact, sharing daily life on the Internet is a good way of not only making our life become more colorful, but also making other people know more about us. What’s more, some people can even make money by doing live video streaming. But every coin also has two sides. Our private information may be stolen by some bad people and used to do something bad.
As a teenager, I think watching Tik Tok can make us relax, but it might be wise for us to limit the time we spend on it every day.
