How to Make Your Holiday Wonderful
Don’t want to spend a holiday alone feeling blue ___1___
1. Don’t Force Cheer
At family gatherings, when your relatives make some untruthful compliments (赞美), you will probably try to force a smile. ___2___ But a 2011 study by researchers at Michigan State University might make you think twice. They followed dozens of bus drivers for two weeks, looking to see when they force a happy face at their passengers. The results showed that on days when the drivers tried to pretend to have a good mood, their actual moods got worse.
2. Don’t Suppress (压制) Sadness
The results of the bus-driver study can be explained by researchers from Stanford University, who found that negative feelings like sadness or anger only worsen when we try to suppress them. ___3___ Expressing our sadness can help us get comfort and compassion from those who care about us. By contrast, suppressing our emotions can actually harm our relationships.
3. Respond Mindfully
___4___ When you respond mindfully to an emotional trigger (诱因), you pause rather than reacting. Instead of blaming yourself, you simply notice what you’re feeling without judging that response as right or wrong. Studies suggest that a mindful response to a negative event reduces the amount of negative emotions we experience. ___5___

When we speak of a person being independent, we mean that as a person achieves adulthood, they become capable of being independent. The process of becoming independent begins as a young child — their level of independence increases as they pass through the various stages of growing up. We need to develop independence in every aspect of our lives so that we can earn a living, develop a career, and develop a personal philosophy. ____6____

If you are dependent on other people, your ability to make clear, precise decisions is severely affected. You will always have to consider the effect that your choices will have on those other people. ____10____

Sometimes kids listen to the instructions and sometimes they don’t. And when they don’t, that can be very frustrating for parents. ____12____ It might sound unexpected, but one strategy widely advised by children’s health professionals is to engage your child in short, daily periods of child-led play called “special time”. It gives young children a chance to interact with their parents without the stress of having to follow directions — which in turn, strengthens the bond between them.
____13____ As that attachment is building, it increases the likelihood that a child is going to listen or value what a parent has to say.
The idea is simple. For at least 5 minutes a day, sit down with your child and join them in an activity. That includes drawing, playing with dolls, building blocks — anything that doesn’t have a right or wrong way to play (like video games). ____14____ Bear it in mind that this is your child’s time to be in charge.
This kind of playtime can be helpful in treating behavior in children who like destroying things. Smarter ways to learn from failure
Many of us were told from an early age that, at school or in life, “you learn from your mistakes.” ____16____
The short answer is “yes” — failure can be a teachable moment. But learning from our mistakes is, in reality, very hard because we don’t like to fail. ____17____ So we react to failure in emotional ways, like giving up on a task easily, telling ourselves we don’t care whether we succeed, or finding fault with the task itself. This is self-protective, according to Hallgeir Sjastad, a professor of psychology and leadership at the Norwegian School of Economics. “Most of us want to think of ourselves as capable”, he says, “so when we fail, it causes a serious threat to our self-image”.
Fortunately, there is a research to suggest that there are some strategies to help us overcome the emotional barriers around failure. ____18____ Instead of asking “Why did I fail ”, we could ask “Why did Sam fail ”, for example. Multiple studies by psychologist Ethan Kross at the University of Michigan show that adopting a third-person perspective helps to soften our negative emotional reactions, allowing us to look at failure more objectively.
A second strategy involves offering advice to others who may be in the same position as us. ____19____ The group of adults and children were asked to give advice based on their own failures. Professors Eskreis-Winkler, Fishbach and Duckworth found that the satisfaction of helping others “forces people to connect with their experience and what they have learned”.
____20____ But it now seems that we should be saying: “fail again, fail smarter”. Failure is an unavoidable part of life, but by learning to overcome the emotional barriers around it, we may find the road to success is a little easier to find.
A.It doesn’t feel good.
B.But is this actually true
C.Here are some reasons why we think so.
D.But how to overcome them is a question.
E.One of them is to adopt a third-person view.
F.The writer Samuel Beckett once said: “fail again, fail better.”
G.It led to better levels of motivation and academic success in the test groups.
In my writing, I adhere (遵守) to some essential rules: understanding the message I want to convey and to whom I am communicating, and presenting it in a clear and concise (简洁的) manner. When my target audience is my professors, or when my writing is expected to be read by my students, I adopt a different style. ____21____ A clear message is necessary to avoid boring readers or losing your audience.
____22____ It matters in all forms of communication. Skilled speakers and performers interact with their audience and deliver their message effectively. In contrast, ineffective communication can result in a lost message.
Effective communication is arguably the most crucial skill you can learn in life. ____23____ For example: imagine being a scientist who has made a groundbreaking discovery. If you cannot explain your work to others using words, how difficult would it be to mime (比划着表达) your findings
Unfortunately, communication skills are often overlooked in education. On this account, many people have experienced ineffective communication at some point in their lives, both as the speaker and the recipient. ____24____ Universities in China are taking steps to improve communication skills. By prioritizing communication skills, we can help students become better communicators.
In conclusion, effective communication is vital in all areas of life, including writing, speaking, and performing. ____25____ With it we will be more likely to succeed in all aspects of life.
A.Readers can easily get bored.
B.Understanding the audience is crucial.
C.However, there is good news on the horizon.
D.Effective communication is not limited to writing.
E.It is fundamental to success in many aspects of life.
F.Great ideas are only limited by our ability to express them.
G.It is a skill that can be learned and developed through practice.
It is impossible to have clear communication without clear thinking. How can I give you a clear idea of something if it is not first clear in my own mind However, clear ideas do not guarantee clear communication. I may have a perfectly good idea of what I’m trying to say, but can’t succeed in getting my ideas across clearly and effectively. ____26____
Don’t think your audience understand your meaning if not making it explicit.
The more complicated the subject matter dealt with, the more important this point is. ____27____ It is necessary for a correct understanding of the subject we’re speaking on, but in fact the audience may know little about this information.
Don’t treat evaluative statements as if they were statements of objective fact.
“The Pearce Building is on the corner of Main and Adams” is a statement of objective fact, and as such it is either true or false. “The Pearce Building is ugly” is an evaluative statement. ____28____. Evaluative statements do not lend themselves to a simple true-or-false response. True statements of objective fact are not open to argument; evaluative statements are.
____29____

“Thirty days is certainly long enough to start to see the beginnings of some nice changes,” Mike Siemens told NBC News. Siemens believes that 30-day challenges are a great way to add exercise into your daily routine. Siemens pointed out, “___33___.” You might not always get the results that a 30-day challenge might have promised you, but they can definitely help you start practicing a new habit that you’ve been wanting to make a routine. So just be patient.
There are a few things to keep in mind if you want to start a 30-day challenge, though. ___34___. Also, make sure that the challenge is realistic and achievable.
It’s also important to remember that forming a new habit takes time. In fact, research suggests it takes 66 days on average for a new habit to take hold. So, don’t give up easily if you miss a day or two. ___35___.
A.Patience is the key here
B.Rome wasn’t built in a day
C.Actions speak louder than words
D.Remember it is a goal that you want to accomplish
E.You are eager for focused challenges of 30 days or less
F.You can form it either by starting a new habit or stopping a bad one
G.Besides that, there are so many different kinds of 30-day challenges

Don’t push yourself too much, especially if you haven’t worked out in a long time or at all._____42_____. Starting off too difficult often makes you lose motivation and could also lead to bad self-esteem. Start small, and then gradually increase intensity.
Stop convincing yourself that you don’t have time to workout. It doesn’t matter how busy your schedule is — you could take 10 minutes out of your day to take a walk around campus._____43_____
_____44_____You could workout with friends or family, create a playlist to workout to, or watch your favorites show while working out. Try switching up the setting where you workout by taking a walk in the park or doing yoga on the quad — anything to get yourself excited to work out.
It’s okay to take a break. When you first start working out, it can be tough. I was getting all Sorts of aches and pains when I first started, and I often denied myself rest days because I felt like I always had to workout at the highest intensity. Fitness tracking devices often recommend we take 10,000 steps a day. But the goal of taking 10,000 steps is not, as many of us believe, rooted in science. ____46____
The 10,000-steps target became popular in Japan in the 1960s. A clock maker, hoping to benefit from interest in fitness after the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, mass-produced a pedometer (计步器) with a name that, when written in Japanese characters, resembled a walking man. ____47____ Therefore, it created a walking aim that, through the decades, somehow got planted in our global consciousness — and fitness trackers.
But today’s best science suggests we do not need to take 10,000steps a day. ____48____ In that study, people who walked for about 8,000 steps a day were half as likely to die prematurely (过早地) from heart disease or any other cause as those who had 4,000 steps a day. ____49____ The extra steps did not provide much additional protection against dying young, either.
____50____ If, like many people, we currently take about 5,000 steps a day during the course of everyday activities like shopping and housework, adding the extra 2,000 to3,000 steps would take us to a total of between 7,000 and 8,000 steps most days, which seems to be the step-count sweet spot.
A.It also translated as “10,000-steps meter”.
B.Really, many of us reach that 10,000-step goal.
C.In fact it is based on history rather than research.
D.But the statistical benefits of additional steps were slight.
E.The 8,000-steps a day could be a reasonable and achievable goal.
F.A study found that 10,000 steps a day are not a must for a long life.
G.The risks for early death continued to drop among those taking more steps.
Niki Lauda will always be remembered, not only for his performance on the racetrack but also for his recovery in the face of tragedy (悲剧). Because of injuries, he later fell into a coma.____53____Against all odds, he survived.
Although he’d managed to escape from death, Lauda’s injuries were extensive. He’d lost his eyelids, his eyebrows, most of his right ear, and the majority of his hair. Because of the intense scarring, Lauda would never look the same again.____54____A mere six weeks after this terrible event, Lauda was back in the game. With his head wrapped in bloody bandages, he faced his fears. Driving through the pain, he still managed to place fourth.

Talents may be artistic, technical, personal or social. Your talent needn’t be rewarding or useful, but it will always be your own.____56____That might take some work, but will benefit you a lot.
One of the best ways to find out what hidden talents you might have is to talk to people who know you best. We tend to overlook our abilities.____57____If you’re lucky enough to have family and friends who care about you, they won’t be shy about pointing out your talents.
____58____Blind Willie Johnson was blinded, but it was just because of his blindness that he was thought to be a more talented guitar player. So don’t let shortcomings or challenges discourage you from trying new things and developing talent.
Don’t be easily affected by others’ opinions.____59____Some people think James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix was the best guitar player of all time, but a classical musician may consider him to be of no talent. Don’t let others tell you being an excellent rider isn’t a real talent, or that making good cheese doesn’t count.
Practice is also important. Even if you have no talent for the guitar, practicing two hours a day will guarantee you’ll get a lot better. Someone who practices will always end up more talented than someone who never does.____60____

For many of us, work diaries are practical things. We use them to make notes of appointments or meetings, writing words next to dates to remind us of what we need to do later. But journaling is also about feelings. It’s a personal diary, often kept far from prying eyes, sometimes containing our secrets and desires.______61______
It can be difficult to say exactly what we’re feeling due to anxiety or frustration. For some of us, putting pen to paper and taking down our thoughts is much easier than saying them. ____62____It can also be relieving to make sense of something which is stressing us out, annoying us or getting us down.
Writing about what is on our minds can help us to be more mindful. It is also good for mental health overall.______63______Maybe our thoughts could be best represented by a drawing.
Another thing to consider is that our memories fade over time. ______64______Logging what’s happening in our lives currently could help bring back memories when we read our diary entries again years from now, or could act as an insight into our past-selves. We can see our progress, or be reminded of exciting times in our lives. The person who was once annoying may have become a close friend, or something that was once scary may now seem funny.
______65______ If something exciting happens, writing about it may help us to remember that wonderful time!
A.And journaling isn’t just limited to words.
B.Journaling is not a record of only happy moments.

What Are the Physical Benefits of Exercise
Exercise is often thought of as activities that help a person lose weight or prevent weight gain. Having a body that is slimmer and trimmer is certainly one of the physical benefits of exercise, but there are many others. ____66____
Exercising can help strengthen the muscles.
Diet pills may help a man shed weight but they will not help him build or strengthen his muscles. The physical benefits of exercise are generally experienced simultaneously. ____67____ This benefit is not limited to males and the types of exercises that produce these results are not limited to weight lifting.
Working out can make the bones stronger.
Exercise also strengthens bones, which becomes more important the older a person gets. Bones go through a natural process of breaking down the rebuilding. ____68____ Physical activity produces that stimulation and, therefore, helps decrease the likelihood of conditions such as osteoporosis (骨质疏松).
____69____
Many people are concerned with looking older. Slowing and reversing the effects of aging are benefits of physical exercise. Cellulite (皮下脂肪团), for example, can make a young woman appear older than she is. ____70____ Wrinkles are another sign of aging that can be reduced by exercise since physical activity tends to improve the condition of skin.
A.Many people want to change or improve their bodies.
B.Taking regular exercise can reduce the effects of aging.
C.As people grow older, however, the rebuilding process slows unless it is stimulated.
D.Training also reduces the negative physical effects which a person feels when he ages.
E.Exercise has the ability to help a person change his body shape, and make him stronger.
F.The appearance of cellulite can be diminished with basic exercises such as walking or jogging.
G.These include strengthening the bones, strengthening the muscles, and reducing the effects of aging.
As the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) has gone global, we’ve watched professionals fail as they try to improve their emotional intelligence because they either don’t know where to focus their efforts or they haven’t understood how to improve these skills on a practical level. In our work consulting with companies and coaching leaders, we have found that if you’re looking to develop particular EI strengths, it helps to consider areas for improvement others have identified along with the goals you want to achieve, and then to actively build habits in those areas rather than simply relying on understanding them conceptually.
The first step is to get a sense of how your self-perception (how you see yourself) differs from your reputation (how others see you); ____71____. For example, most of us think that we’re good listeners, but very often that’s really not the case. Without this external reality check, it will be difficult for you to identify the ways that your actions affect your performance. Getting feedback from others can also provide proof of the necessity of shifting our behaviour and motivation to do so.
To give you the best sense of where the differences lie between your self-perception and reputation, you should use a 360-degree feedback assessment that takes into account the multiple facets of EI; ____72____. Secondly, when you get your feedback from an assessment, let that inform what you want to improve. But also consider what your goals are. When it comes to cultivating strengths in emotional intelligence, ____73____. Your emotional intelligence is so tied up in your sense of self that being intrinsically motivated to make the effort matters more when changing long-standing habits than it does when simply learning a skill.
That means the areas that you choose to actively work on should lie at the crossroads of the feedback you’ve gotten and the areas that are most important to your own aspirations; ____74____as you do the work of strengthening your emotional intelligence.
Once you’ve determined which EI skills you want to focus on, identify specific actions that you’ll take. If you’re working on becoming a better listener, for example, you might decide that when you’re conversing with someone you’ll take the time to pause, listen to what they have to say, and check that you understand before you reply. Keep it specific:____75____.
By starting to change your routine reactions, you’ll be well on your way to figuring out the old habits that aren’t serving you well and transforming them into new, improved ones that do.
A.you’re at a huge disadvantage if you’re only interested because others said you should be
B.bearing your goals in mind is so helpful to improve the positive impact of your current EI habits
C.you should also take every opportunity to practice the skill you are developing, no matter how small
D.understanding the impacts of your EI habits relative to your goals will keep you going over the long run
E.the key is to find one that guarantees no personal information of those giving you feedback will be leaked
F.how others see you will to some extent decide how you see others and help you become a good listener
G.this is true because we can be blind to how we express and read the emotional components of our interactions
Conscious (有意识的) living is not just a trend. ____76____ It is about being intentional with everything you do — your words, actions, beliefs, habits, and choices. Accepting conscious living takes some effort, but it is worthwhile. Here are some ways you can achieve this goal.
●Be conscious about your time.
Time is the most precious thing because there is no way to live a moment again. ____77____ If you waste your precious hours doing negative things, you will regret it later. The first step for living consciously is to be wise about your time. Be selective about things you spend it on, and allocate (分配) it for positive activities.

You cannot achieve them unless you understand your needs and intentions. It is easier said than done because most people fail to make an effort to know themselves. Spend time thinking over and knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Once you know yourself better, you can create a plan to work towards becoming more patient, honest, and forgiving.
●Learn to be grateful.
Gratitude takes you a long way towards conscious living. It opens you up to a happier and a fulfilled mindset. Most people are unhappy because they see only the negatives in life. However, everyone has something to be grateful for. Writing a gratitude journal is a good start for counting your blessings. ____79____
●Believe in yourself.
It is the key to making the right choices, yet not regretting the wrong ones. ____80____ Spending time alone and thinking deeply are effective measures that enable you to identify the inner voice. Care for it and follow it to make it stronger down the line.

Paying attention to what the friend is going on in his life, like his hobbies and what he does at work or in school. Take note of people he frequently mentions; these people are probably important to him in one way or another. Give the friend your full attention; don’t play on your phone or computer. ____82____
Call him when you have some free time. If you’re both busy and it’s difficult for you both to make time, schedule a time to talk. ____83____ Send him articles that you think he might enjoy, or things that remind you of him.
____84____ However, it can be an even better gesture to show him he’s special. Think about the things your friend is proud of and strengthen that idea. If your friend is trying something new, like a new outfit or accessory, that is a great opportunity to say something nice.
Whether it’s tomorrow or next month, setting time aside in advance will show it is a priority for you to see him.
____85____ Ask him what he wants to do, and suggest things that you know he’ll like. If you know his good friends, try to include them on the plan. This is an easy way to show him that you’re paying attention to the important person in his life.

This definition reinforces (强化) the idea that there’s no reason to panic or change our current energy-intensive lifestyle. All society needs to do is look to green technology to work its magic. ____87____
One of the best examples of this optimistic misconception is the electric car. Despite being highly regarded as an eco-friendly way to get around, electric cars are not the end for the future of transport. Batteries in electric cars use chemical elements which we could be seeing a shortage of by the midcentury. ____88____ Techno-optimism has led many to believe that if everyone just switched to driving electric vehicles, we would be making incredible steps towards sustainability. However, the reality is that the amount of resources and energy needed to produce enough electric vehicles for everyone is not even remotely sustainable.
____89____ Investing in public transportation and moving away from individually owned vehicles. Producing fewer cars. Improving recycling practices of old batteries. The solutions we seek should not be rooted in new technology, but be about changing the way our society functions.
Techno-optimism puts too much emphasis on technology and not enough on what we can do right this minute. Unfortunately, people seem to like the picture that techno-optimism paints. ____90____ It is important to understand that the problem begins when we see those technologies as a way to make our current lifestyles eco-friendly. Until we are ready to face the need for a less complex life, we cannot make true progress towards sustainability.

Many people who don’t normally visit museums may consider them boring and often wonder what the appeal is. Actually, people visit museums for a variety of reasons._____91_____ And we thought it would be interesting to examine these reasons in an effort to change naysayers’(反对者) minds. As a result, we’ve come up with some reasons to visit museums.
Open up your eyes. Visiting museums allows you to place yourself in the shoes of artists. Each work serves as a doorway into the artists’ soul and lets you explore what they felt, rather than merely observed._____92_____. By studying it, you can experience a different world.
Gain inspiration. Do you ever feel like you need a breath of inspiration to refresh your soul It’s not a coincidence (巧合) that there’s a “muse” in museums! A museum is a wonderful place to get inspired and let creative juices begin to flow again._____93_____
Offer “food” for conversation. This is because museums can help fuel your discussions with other people. Whether it’s a new exhibit or a fascinating show, museums offer a variety of subjects to talk about._____94_____ You can also mention exciting inventions in science, historical findings and so on.
_____95_____ Museums offer a perfect opportunity to meet some people that share your love of art and culture. By taking in new exhibits or attending lectures, you’re placing yourself in an atmosphere that will attract like minds.
A.Change your attitude towards life.
B.Meet those sharing similar interests.
C.Every piece of art tells a unique story.
D.Some are personal and some are social.
E.It has a positive effect on the whole society.

There’s a lot to cope with when you go off to university. ____96____ For most students, a completely new environment is waiting to be explored.
We recently drove our daughter Evie 150 miles to start life as a fresher. It was a struggle to find the car park, let alone explore the huge campus. Although we knew she had flatmates and phone apps to get her to fit in, the challenge ahead was clear—to find her way in an unfamiliar world. ____97____
In a recent study, volunteers walked around a virtual forest environment. Then some of them took the same walk again, while others explored a different forest.___98___ According to the researchers, that was because exploring the new environment stimulated their dopamine (多巴胺) system—setting up their brains for memorizing things. Thus, they scored higher.
So leaving home to study makes perfect sense. ____99____ But we may all be able to gain some of the benefits, even if it’s just by stimulating our senses and challenging our thinking skills. Here are three things to try:
◆ Go somewhere new to tackle an upcoming learning task—like memorizing a speech in the library, or revising for an exam in a park—and take an unfamiliar route to get there.
◆ ____100____To warm yourself up for learning, picture a city you know well, but imagine you’re tapped in a part of it that you’ve never visited. Then try to visualize exactly how you’ll get out.
◆ Play video games that get you moving through new landscapes. Then see whether it improves your success with other learning tasks, like practising a dance or mastering phrases for a foreign trip.
A.Get lost in your imagination.
B.Prepare yourself for a city tour.
C.But exploring places as such is beneficial to memory.
D.People prove to be more adaptable after new experience.
E.The latter group performed better in memory tests straight after.
F.There are new friends to meet and new responsibilities to accept.
G.Young minds seem to gain most from being in strange surroundings.

A clock maker, hoping to benefit from interest in fitness after the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, mass-produced a pedometer (计步器) with a name that, when written in Japanese characters, resembled a walking man.( 20世纪60年代,一万步的目标在日本流行起来。一家钟表制造商希望从1964年东京奥运会后人们对健身的兴趣中获益,于是批量生产了一款计步器,用日文写出来的名字就像一个走路的人)”可知,此处介绍了一万步目标的不同名称。由此可知,A. It also translated as “10,000-steps meter”.(它也被翻译成“一万步米”)能够衔接上文,符合语境。故选A。
48.根据下文“In that study, people who walked for about 8,000 steps a day were half as likely to die prematurely (过早地) from heart disease or any other cause as those who had 4,000 steps a day.(在那项研究中,每天步行约8000步的人因心脏病或其他原因过早死亡的可能性是每天步行4000步的人的一半)”可知,此处介绍每天走路的步数对寿命的影响。由此可知,F. A study found that 10,000 steps a day are not a must for a long life.(一项研究发现,要想长寿,每天走一万步并不是必须的)能够衔接下文,下文中的that study指代选项中是a study,符合语境。故选F。
49.根据上文“But today’s best science suggests we do not need to take 10,000steps a day.(但当今最先进的科学表明,我们不需要每天走一万步)”及下文“The extra steps did not provide much additional protection against dying young, either.(这些额外的步数也没有提供多少防止英年早逝的额外保护)”可知,我们不需要每天走一万步,额外的步数也没有提供额外的保护。由此可知,D. But the statistical benefits of additional steps were slight.(但是,从统计上看,额外的步数带来的好处是微不足道的)能够承上启下,符合语境,其中选项中的additional steps对应原文中的extra steps。故选D。
50.根据下文“If, like many people, we currently take about 5,000 steps a day during the course of everyday activities like shopping and housework, adding the extra 2,000 to3,000 steps would take us to a total of between 7,000 and 8,000 steps most days, which seems to be the step-count sweet spot.(如果像许多人一样,我们目前每天在购物和做家务等日常活动中走5000步左右,那么加上额外的2000到3000步,我们大多数日子的总步数将达到7000到8000步,这似乎是步数的最佳点)”可知,本段指出7000到8000步似
