Miss Smith was smiling, young and beautiful. John liked her. Despite this, he still continued to fail. He never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss Smith. When he was punished for failing to hand in his homework, he felt just sad! Still, he did not study.
In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. John hurried through his test, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school. At home, no one checked on John to see if he was safe. No one knew whether he was even at home because no one cared. However, John never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss Smith’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
“John!” Shocked, he turned to look at her.
“Pay attention!”
John looked at his teacher, as she began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
“You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “except for one boy. It breaks my heart to tell you this, but...”she hesitated, and started staring at John.
“...The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!”
She just stared at John and John dropped his eyes. However, John still wouldn’t do his homework. Even as the punishments became severe, he remained stubborn.
“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.
“Give yourself a chance. Don’t give up!” Nothing changed him.
“John! Please! I care about you!”
Wow! Suddenly, John got it! Someone cared about him Unbelievable! John went home from school, thoughtful. Walking into the house, he found his parents drunk as expected. He quickly packed his camping gear (露营装备), a loaf of bread, a bottle of water, and for the first time, his schoolbooks. Determined, he headed for the woods.

“Oh, it’s very small, and it’s the same color as the floor,” the woman said, adding, “I don’t want to bother you.”
“That’s OK. Let me try,” Frank said, and dropped to a crouch (蹲), moving a few inches at a time, eyes and hands sweeping back and forth.
Meanwhile, I stood over their table, carefully searching, moving the dishes, using a fork to look under the bread in the basket, running my hand over the tablecloth, shifting the plates.
“Thank you so much, you two,” the woman said, “But I’m afraid it’s lost forever. Your dinner’s getting cold; please don’t worry.”
I saw tears forming in her eyes, Soon. her son sank back into his chair, too, But Frank kept looking until one of them thanked him again, and he too, finally sat down to finish eating.
Ten minutes later, as we were finishing our dinner, the mother and son were sipping coffee, silent.

As he got closer, he could see a long driveway leading to a solitary house.
When Tom approached the house, a young girl around ten years old was standing in the doorway. He pulled up as close as he could and rolled down the window. “Are your parents at home” he shouted over the wind and rain. “I have a flat tyre and I need help,” Tom added. “Wait a minute,” the girl replied. She turned and went into the house.

He thought as the boy was small, he must not have carried any money with him and turned to leave. Suddenly, Henry cried out loudly and bravely, “I do have money. It’s here.”

He also suggested that I check out boxing — maybe I could learn to use my fists in a meaningful way instead of being on the destructive path I seemed to be headed for.

Working as a primary teacher in Pompton Lakes Primary School, New Jersey, I particularly believed in cultivating love in children from an early age. In October, I told the eight-year-olds in my class about my plan. “I’d like all of you to do extra jobs around the house to earn some money,” I said. “Then we’ll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for a needy grandma who might not have a nice dinner otherwise.”
Early in Thanksgiving week, the boys and girls arrived in class clutching (紧握) their hard-earned money. They had cleared rubbish, set tables, washed dishes, helped with younger siblings. And now they couldn’t wait to go shopping.
I watched while they ran up and down the supermarket aisles (货架通道). At last we headed toward the checkout, pushing a cart filled with turkey and all the trimmings (配料). For three days, for a few hours each day, Patrick handed his resume out to strangers. He also held a sign which read “Please take a resume. Laid-off. Looking for a job.”
During one of these sessions, a woman named Melissa DiGianfilippo, owner of Serendipity Consulting, passed by. She was driving down Camel back Rd in Phx near her office and saw this guy on the side of the road with a smile in 110-degree heat, with a sign asking people to take his resume. She was impressed with Patrick because it was 110℃ outside and what she saw was really unexpected.

Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the ad. I quickly tucked (把……塞进) the paper away in the closet. There was only one problem: my conscience was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our puppy was the one they were desperately seeking.
