John, whose parents were addicted to alcohol, was always failing in exams. Although he had been failing every year, he was still passed on from grade to grade and now he was a student of the seventh grade. John was tall, but he went completely unnoticed by the school teachers until Miss Smith.
Miss Smith was smiling, young and beautiful. John liked her. Despite this, he still continued to fail. He never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss Smith. When he was punished for failing to hand in his homework, he felt just sad! Still, he did not study.
In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. John hurried through his test, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school. At home, no one checked on John to see if he was safe. No one knew whether he was even at home because no one cared. However, John never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss Smith’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
“John!” Shocked, he turned to look at her.
“Pay attention!”
John looked at his teacher, as she began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
“You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “except for one boy. It breaks my heart to tell you this, but...”she hesitated, and started staring at John.
“...The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!”
She just stared at John and John dropped his eyes. However, John still wouldn’t do his homework. Even as the punishments became severe, he remained stubborn.
“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.
“Give yourself a chance. Don’t give up!” Nothing changed him.
“John! Please! I care about you!”
Wow! Suddenly, John got it! Someone cared about him Unbelievable! John went home from school, thoughtful. Walking into the house, he found his parents drunk as expected. He quickly packed his camping gear (露营装备), a loaf of bread, a bottle of water, and for the first time, his schoolbooks. Determined, he headed for the woods.

My husband Frank and I lived a simple life, carrying lunch to work, kipping vacations, and staying in. But it was our fifteenth wedding anniversary so we decided to choose an expensive Italian restaurant.
Halfway through our very delicious dinner, Frank and I noticed that the two diners at the table to our right seemed to be looking for something under their table and all around. The elegantly dressed woman appeared to be in her late seventies, and the much younger male companion looked like her son. The woman kept touching her ear.
“Did you lose an erring ” I asked.
The woman shook her head and looked worried.
“My hearing aid (助听器),” she said. “My son finally convinced me to get it this week, and it’s so expensive. My son’s eyes are better than mine, but he can’t find it either.” Then she was silent and shook her head again.
Frank stood up immediately. “Let me have a try,” he offered, “You never know, maybe a fresh eye will find it.”
“Oh, it’s very small, and it’s the same color as the floor,” the woman said, adding, “I don’t want to bother you.”
“That’s OK. Let me try,” Frank said, and dropped to a crouch (蹲), moving a few inches at a time, eyes and hands sweeping back and forth.
Meanwhile, I stood over their table, carefully searching, moving the dishes, using a fork to look under the bread in the basket, running my hand over the tablecloth, shifting the plates.
“Thank you so much, you two,” the woman said, “But I’m afraid it’s lost forever. Your dinner’s getting cold; please don’t worry.”
I saw tears forming in her eyes, Soon. her son sank back into his chair, too, But Frank kept looking until one of them thanked him again, and he too, finally sat down to finish eating.
Ten minutes later, as we were finishing our dinner, the mother and son were sipping coffee, silent.

The rain was coming down so hard that each drop seemed to explode as it hit the roof of the car. Tom strained his eyes and looked out into the coal-black night, struggling hard to keep his car on the road. The windscreen wipers worked roughly to clear the glass, but they were not doing much good. The rain beat down continuously, it was completely dark outside, and the road was deserted except for him and his car.
Tom glanced in his rear-view mirror. He could see his wheelchair in the back seat an quickly looked down at his thin, broken legs. He could feel a familiar wave of despair (绝望) start to wash over him. The rain was still hitting on the roof of the car and he felt as if he had been trapped inside a drum. As the world outside began to close in on him, Tom held his breath. Suddenly, a loud noise shook Tom out of his moment of hopelessness as the car began to bump down the road. “Great,” he thought. “a flat tyre.”
With a heavy sigh, Tom brought the car to a stop, resting his head on the steering wheel defeated! After a few seconds, he looked carefully out of the window. The rain seemed to have eased a little, and in the distance, he could see a light twinkling in the blackness. With a sense of hopeful anticipation, Tom gently eased the car towards the light. As he got closer, he could see a long driveway leading to a solitary house.
When Tom approached the house, a young girl around ten years old was standing in the doorway. He pulled up as close as he could and rolled down the window. “Are your parents at home” he shouted over the wind and rain. “I have a flat tyre and I need help,” Tom added. “Wait a minute,” the girl replied. She turned and went into the house.

Henry was a 10-year-old boy. He lived with his mother in a small house which belonged to his grandfather. They led a hard life.
One day, Henry’s mother decided to send Henry to learn business from his only uncle, who lived in another country. She sold some of her ornaments(装饰物) to collect money for Henry’s journey. The following day, Henry got ready for the journey with great excitement. As Henry was young, his mother worried that he would be easily fooled and that the money would be stolen. Hence she sewed a small pocket beneath the right sleeve(袖子) of his shirt near his underarm and hid the money there. She hugged him and said, “Whatever the situation, tell the truth and be brave.”
She also warned him to beware of (提防) strangers and use the money only when needed. Keeping all the advice in mind, Henry set out for the journey by ship with a small bag containing his clothes and a few snacks. It was the first time he had travelled alone. He stared at the blue sea beneath him, admiring the beauty of nature.
Suddenly, there was a loud noise behind him. He turned and noticed that a group of robbers(强盗) had jumped aboard from a small boat next to the ship. Frightened, he looked around. The robbers were grabbing money, jewellery and other items from the passengers. Henry tried to stand firm as his legs started to shake. The leader of the robbers approached Henry and laughed aloud and said, “Let’s see what you have got.”
Saying this, he took the bag from Henry and emptied all the things out on the floor. All the clothes and snacks fell on the floor. “No money ” asked the leader. He thought as the boy was small, he must not have carried any money with him and turned to leave. Suddenly, Henry cried out loudly and bravely, “I do have money. It’s here.”

5.阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。
I was born in London, England, and lived there with my mother until I was about eight years old. To find a better life, she went to Chicago and left me with friends in London until she got settled enough to send for me.
Meanwhile, back in England, I was getting into trouble. I had always felt like an outsider, different from the other kids. They didn’t want to play with me. That made me mad, so I got into fights and ended up getting expelled (开除) for being a danger to the other kids at my school. The people I was staying with were upset with me and felt they couldn’t manage me. So, they sent me to a home for kids — kind of a boarding school. I felt alone and bored, the food was terrible, and I really missed my mother. Finally, she sent for me.
The weather was different, my school was different, the country was different, but some things were still the same—I was still getting into fights. Kids picked on me about my accent, the color of my skin, my grades or whatever. I was different, still left out. It didn’t matter; I hated getting picked on, and I let them know it — with my fists. All through grades seven and eight, I was sent to the principal’s office so often that he and I became friends. Instead of punishing me, he advised me that I should be better off using the energy I had in more positive ways and encouraged me to play football and basketball after school. He also suggested that I check out boxing — maybe I could learn to use my fists in a meaningful way instead of being on the destructive path I seemed to be headed for.

Thanksgiving for the Soul
Working as a primary teacher in Pompton Lakes Primary School, New Jersey, I particularly believed in cultivating love in children from an early age. I wanted children to experience that it’s more blessed to give than to receive. I wanted them to understand that love of society and love of life is not just lip service; that people somehow have to make it come alive. I hoped they could experience a sense of their own power to make a difference.
There was a rural area nearby where a lot of aged people lived in solitude (孤独). They either had no family or their children had left to work in big cities. Most of them lived on government aid to keep body and soul together. An agency, which was in charge of the elder people in this region, had once told me about a needy grandmother, Mrs. Wilson, who had lived alone for many years. I had always desired to do something for her. So I came up with the Thanksgiving plan.
In October, I told the eight-year-olds in my class about my plan. “I’d like all of you to do extra jobs around the house to earn some money,” I said. “Then we’ll buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for a needy grandma who might not have a nice dinner otherwise.”
Early in Thanksgiving week, the boys and girls arrived in class clutching (紧握) their hard-earned money. They had cleared rubbish, set tables, washed dishes, helped with younger siblings. And now they couldn’t wait to go shopping.
I watched while they ran up and down the supermarket aisles (货架通道). At last we headed toward the checkout, pushing a cart filled with turkey and all the trimmings (配料). Then someone spotted a “necessity”—flowers, which caught their attention. All kids ran toward the holiday flowers, with one proposing, “Flowers! We can buy her a bunch of flowers!”

Chris and I laughed as we got off the Tilt ‘n’ Spin ride and wandered into the crowd at the fair. We felt like we were still spinning (旋转).We inched along with the crowd, one small step at a time. In front of me, all I could see was the back of someone’s T-shirt.
“Three tickets each, please," said a man right in front of us. Bodies pushed against us. “Wait,” Chris said. “We’re in a line What for ”
“Ferris wheel (摩天轮),” said the man. “Step right up and sit right down.”
Before I knew it, I was sitting on a small seat that was hung in what seemed like outer space. As we reached the top, Chris was excited. He was totally attracted by the amazing view, but I was rather nervous with my hands holding a bar for dear life.
“There’s a place that sells chocolate-covered bananas,” Chris said. “Keep talking,” I thought. “So you don’t notice that I’m totally terrified (极度惊恐的).” Every time Chris moved, our seat rocked. I tried to pretend I was playing on the swings in my backyard, and hoped I wouldn’t cry. “How many turns will this make before it’s over ” I managed to say. Luckily, my voice sounded normal. “Five or six, probably, Chris replied. “ We have tons of time. Look, a hot-air balloon!” He pointed and the seat shook. I cried. Chris looked at me. It seemed he’d realized something.
On our fifth time around, the wheel suddenly stopped, and we were hung in midair at the highest point possible. I cried, again. I couldn’t help myself. “Hey, Jared,” said Chris, “are you OK ” I nodded and tried to smile like I was having fun. Chris patted (轻拍) my shoulder and said we would be back on the ground soon.
“Attention!” called a voice over the loudspeaker. “Due to mechanical difficulties, the Ferris wheel is stuck. We’ll get it turning again as soon as possible.”

Being without work can be scary and overwhelming, especially when you have a family to support.
Patrick Hoagland is a 30-year-old dad of one who was suddenly laid off from his job at a metal recycling company. He was desperate to find another job and in this economy, that isn’t very easy. However, as a father, he couldn’t afford to be without work.
“I definitely had fear,” Hoagland admitted. “My wife and I, we don’t make a whole lot of money individually. Once I lost my job, everything was put on her.” So a month after being laid off, he decided to stand on a busy roadside of a Phoenix highway and simply hand out copies of his resume!
Before figuring out his unconventional strategy, Patrick had tried to apply to many jobs, both online and in person. The lack of response eventually led to his idea. “I wasn’t getting any responses,“ he said.” I was getting frustrated. It popped into my head, stand on a corner and hold a sign and hand out resumes. At first I laughed about it... but I kept thinking about it. I figured, why not ! There are millions of people in Phoenix driving around; someone might give me a job offer.”
For three days, for a few hours each day, Patrick handed his resume out to strangers. He also held a sign which read “Please take a resume. Laid-off. Looking for a job.”
During one of these sessions, a woman named Melissa DiGianfilippo, owner of Serendipity Consulting, passed by. She was driving down Camel back Rd in Phx near her office and saw this guy on the side of the road with a smile in 110-degree heat, with a sign asking people to take his resume. One early summer afternoon, my little brother and I were about a quarter-mile from our home, deep in the woods by a river we liked to play near. We’d stay out so long that my brother usually kept snacks in his pockets so we wouldn’t need to go home until suppertime.
My brother spotted Pierre drinking from the river. He wanted to go pet him, but I wasn’t so sure it was a good idea. Pierre was an extra-large German Shepherd (牧羊犬) .That didn’t scare me. I loved big dogs. But on the day we found Pierre, his appearance was frightening. With many bloody wounds and completely thin and dull fur, he was so skinny that we could see his individual ribs (肋骨). As we got closer, I could tell he was shaking in fear. My heart went out to this poor dog, but I wasn’t sure how to help him.
Even only five years older, my brother was more adventurous and brave than I was. While I was hesitating how best to help Pierre, he approached the scared dog and offered him some of our snacks. Pierre stopped shaking, and his eyes lit up with hope. When Pierre carefully ate and then gently pushed his bighead into my brother’s little hand for petting,my fears melted away. He was clearly a good dog who had been in a bad situation. My desire to help him overrode my fear of his appearance.
“Maybe we can keep him at home”, I timidly (胆怯地) suggested. “Good idea” my brother almost jumped to his feet and agreed readily. However, what concerned us was how we could persuade others, especially Mom, to accept Pierre. We knew Mom loved animals, but meanwhile was afraid of big dogs. “Mom always reminds us to treat animals with love and care. I am sure she will love the pitiful creature.” My brother’s comforting words finally set my heart at rest. Pierre seemed to know we were trying to offer some help and he crouched on the ground obediently(顺从地) .

Finders Keepers
When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone, if the weather permitted. It was a short distance, so I knew they were safe and no trouble would befall (降临) them.
One warm spring day, a cute puppy (小狗) followed them home after school. When my husband got home that evening, she climbed into his lap to watch TV. The girls were both begging me to keep her.
She had no collar (项圈) or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up.
By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very intelligent and good with the girls. This was a good idea, I thought. It was time the girls took responsibility for another life.
The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular ad jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was pleading (恳求) for the return of a lost puppy in the vicinity (附近) of our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the ad. I quickly tucked (把……塞进) the paper away in the closet. There was only one problem: my conscience was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our puppy was the one they were desperately seeking.
It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. Finally, with sweaty palms (手掌), I lifted the receiver and dialed. Secretly I was praying no one would answer, but someone did. The voice on the other end was that of a young woman. After describing the dog to her in detail, she wanted to come right over.

The following Monday John arrived at school on time, and Miss Smith gave a quiz on the weekend homework as usual. John hurried through the test, and was the first to hand in his paper. With a look of surprise, Miss Smith took his paper. Obviously puzzled, she began to look it over. John walked back to his desk, his heart pounding within his chest. As he sat down, he couldn’t resist another look at the lovely woman. Miss Smith’s face was in total shock! She glanced up at John, then down, then up. Suddenly, her face broke into a radiant smile. I couldn’t let my mother down.”
Tears rolled down the eyes of the leader. He said, “Being a kid, you are so truthful and honest. I feel ashamed of robbing you.” Saying this, he apologized to everyone present on the board, returned their belongings and left with his companions. One day, I happened to go in a boxing gym downtown. A boxing trainer asked me to go a few rounds with a small man and I agreed. However, I just couldn’t hit the guy. He danced all around me while I tried to hit him. Then that little guy really connected with my nose, which made me realize that there was more to the sport of boxing than just swinging my fists. I made up my mind that the boxing ring was where I belonged.
From that day on, boxing became the sport that I liked the most. I started training with the man who got me into the ring that first time. Under his training, I learned that boxing is a sweet science where I could use my brain as well as my strength and size. Difficult as it was, I finally went from being a street fighter to a gold medal-winning Olympic champion. Fortunately, I have come a long way to become the man that my mum raised me to be.

6. “Flowers may not be as practical as food.” I said. “Food will feed her for the day, but flowers will delight her for days or longer.” one of them insisted. Looking at the bunches of blooming flowers neatly arranged there, sweet scent filling the air, I changed my mind. With my consent, the kids rushed forward, chose a bunch of beautiful purple flowers, and carefully placed it into the cart. Soon we jumped into the car and drove toward Mrs. Wilson’s home. The little ones talked and giggled on the way, unable to hold back their excitement.
With a food box and a bunch of flowers, we finally arrived at Mrs. Wilson’s home. Mrs. Wilson, a little woman with a weary face, came to the door to welcome us. With great hospitality, she led us into her house. Her mouth was widened with great joy as we carried the food box in. When one kid sent her the sweet flowers, she simply couldn’t conceal her excitement, tears glittering in her eyes. Holding the flowers to her nose, she seemed to regain her youth and vigor. At that moment, the kids had found the power they possessed to make another life better. Sometimes a bunch of flowers could nourish another soul on a dark November day.

The sight of Pierre feeling better gave us immense joy.
We knocked at the door with Pierre sitting quietly by our side. As soon as Mom opened the door, she gazed into Pierre’s eyes and melted. She couldn’t deny her love for the big pup. We were so relieved, knowing that Pierre had finally found a safe place to stay. My brother and I were overjoyed, for we knew he was now part of our family. Obviously, she belonged to the woman. I felt like my heart was being ripped from my chest. I wanted to grab the dog and run. Instead, I smiled faintly. After some chat, it was time for them to go home.
Opening the door, I noticed a little girl in the car with a small wheelchair next to her. When the child saw the puppy, a bright smile spread across her face. The woman saw me look at the chair and offered an explanation. Lucy was given to her daughter to promote emotional healing after a car accident. When Lucy disappeared, the little girl had gone into a deep depression, refusing to come out of the shell she was in. Suddenly I felt very guilty for my selfishness and the terrible time they had been through. I knew I had done the right thing--that puppy was exactly where she belonged.
