“Amy left several emotional calls for you on our answering machine while you were gone,” announced my husband, Jim, as I walked in the door, extremely tired after four hours of driving across the state. For the last three days I had accompanied my twelve-year-old granddaughter, Rachel, during her competition at the Florida State Science Fair where she won second place in Junior Chemistry. “Amy was extremely upset and crying when she left her messages,” continued Jim. “She needed to talk to her Grandma.”
My mind raced. What could be wrong with this happy fourth grader who last week flew from her home in Maryland and spent her spring break with us in Florida Just four days ago I took her to the airport for her return flight, and smiled when the busy airline employee handling the Unaccompanied Minor paperwork stared at my cute granddaughter and said, “You are the most beautiful little girl, in your cotton hat with the big sunflower in front.”
“People made six compliments (赞美) about my hat today, Grandma,” said Amy as we headed toward security. “Remember all the people who told me they liked it when we went shopping this morning ”
My thoughts returned to Jim’s descriptions of Amy’s emotional calls. I couldn’t bear to listen to them.
“Why was she so upset ” I asked.
“She lost her sunflower hat on the plane and was so miserable that she couldn’t sleep. She had placed it on top of her bag of books, under the seat in front of her, and then realized it was missing while she was at the baggage carousel (行李传送带). She and her dad rushed back to the plane and had the attendants (服务人员) check around her seat but the hat was gone.”
My heart sank.

I looked up from my desk to see the teacher writing on the board: “Battle of the Books!” She smiled and said, “This time it’s a teamwork. You’re going to be in teams of two, and set a reading goal. Every team that meets their goal by the end of the month will get a prize!” The lunch bell sounded before she could explain any more rules.
As I gathered my things, Liya passed my desk and said, “Teammates ” Since Liya and I shared the same interest in graphic novel(漫画小说), and we took Hindi language class together, we teamed up automatically. I was both relieved and excited to have my team. Then we got to the cafeteria and quickly threw out a bunch of ideas of what to do at our table.
I looked to our third friend Kash, with whom the three of us always do stuff together, “Kash, do you have ideas for us ” “Why would I give you guys ideas ” he said gloomily(阴沉地). “I’ll save that for my team...whoever that is. Now I see how I rank in the friendship lineup.” Kash replied in an angry tone.
I knew he was mad for a reason. If I were him, not only would I think that I ranked last in that group, but I’d also be panicking about what team I could join. But now, I was on the inside and Kash wasn’t. I felt like the only way to fix this would be three people on a team. So, as the teacher walked by our table, I asked for her permission. What surprised me was that she had intended to draw names to assign random groups, but didn’t get a chance to say it before lunch.
Awkward and frustrated, we were stuck in this dilemma. Having first teamed up without Kash didn’t mean we didn’t like him. I knew we—especially I—wouldn’t be able to enjoy any prize if our friend felt bad about being left out. So, I decided to do something to make it up for him and convince Kash he was an equal friend.

Alice and her family went on a camping trip along the seaside. Upon arrival, Dad called for a meeting. He announced, “There are lots of jobs to be done. It’s no fun on holiday if Mum and I do all the work, so I come up with this pocket money chart. In this way, everyone has to do something, and you must do your own job every day! If you do your jobs well, you get some extra pocket money!”
Looking at the chart, which had their names on it next to a list of jobs, the kids frowned (皱眉) at the idea. Unwillingly, they began to do their jobs. Alice washed up the dishes. Mike, the youngest brother, dried the dishes. Jeff, Alice’s twin brother, took their dog for a walk.
The next day they went to the beach. After playing some time in the sea, they went to look for shells along the beach. Suddenly, Alice found a strange-looking rock. She picked it up and showed it to Dad. “You’ve found a fossil (化石)! It was once a shellfish and has turned into a rock after millions of years!” Dad said happily. Greatly inspired, Alice continued her search, determined to find a better one, but she failed. Darkness fell, and Alice had to head back to the campsite with her family in disappointment. On the way back they stopped at a shop, where Alice spotted some amazing fossils! But soon she found they were too expensive!
Back at the camp, Alice was still thinking of the amazing fossils in the shop. Suddenly an idea occurred to her, “I’ll do everyone’s jobs and then I can get all the extra pocket money to buy a fossil!” The next morning, Alice offered to dry the dishes and walk the dog, which greatly pleased Mike and Jeff. But things didn’t go as Alice planned.

Having held the interschool (校际) story tell g championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate (候选人) to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly be the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited (自负的). I was so proud that I ignored the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse (排练) for the contest ” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage
in the audience,” she added.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I event old Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script (讲稿) .I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was crowded with people. My schoolteachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms (手掌) sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.

Jenny, a ten-year-old girl, lived with her poor single mother, Annika, who worked as a cleaner. One day, her mom came home and said her arthritis (关节炎) was getting worse. “It has been getting harder for me to clean the streets the whole day, sweetheart,” her mom said.
“Do you need to go to the doctor, Mom ” Jenny asked. Annika shook her head and simply replied she couldn’t work as much as she used to. “I’ll make less money. We’ll need to save money,” Annika added.
Jenny realized her mother needed her help. She thought about going to work with her mom so they could sweep the same number of streets as before, or even more. Jenny also thought, “Then, my mom will have enough money to go to the doctor.” She told Annika her idea. But Annika disagreed and explained, “You should study hard at school, Jenny.” Jenny agreed and continued with school.
A few days later, however, Annika realized she couldn’t deal with her work on her own and allowed Jenny to help her after school every day. Jenny nodded right away and helped her mom sweep streets.
To pass the time, Jenny would sing the songs of her favorite singer while sweeping. Jenny loved the singer, but didn’t know a lot about her. Actually, the singer was a very kind person. If she knew someone needed help, she’d give a helping hand.
One afternoon, some of Jenny’s classmates saw her sweeping the street. They began making fun of her, with words like “Your mother is a cleaner, and you’re a cleaner, too!” Jenny paid no attention to them, and continued to sing her favorite song while sweeping.
Her classmates then took photos and videos of Jenny and posted them online. “Our classmate is a street sweeper!” they wrote in their post. While they expected others to laugh at Jenny, they were surprised at what happened afterwards.

One of my sisters who had worked abroad for 10 years returned home for her vacation. All the family members were happy. My parents planned to have a simple family celebration and prepared food for us to share.
While staying with them, an idea came to me. We could have a family outing to the beach! All of my siblings (兄弟姐妹) agreed! It had been a long time since we went on an outing last time and it was the chance to do it again. We set off the next day.
The weather was nice and many people were enjoying the seawater. I ran towards the water and felt the coolness of it. My siblings placed our stuff in a big cottage (村舍). They brought many foods and planned to cook fish and pork. Everyone in the cottage was busy preparing for food while the children went to swim. I couldn’t swim though I was already a teenager. That was why I just played in the shallow part of the sea.
On the other side of the beach, I saw a small fishing boat. I never tried to ride on it, but while I was looking at it, I was eager to take a ride on the boat. Without a second thought, I went to the boat alone. I paid the fisherman for using his boat and started to push it towards the sea. In my mind, I would not go to the deep part. A few minutes later, I made it float on water and I enjoyed it! 1 made it move forwards and kept it afloat for several minutes. Suddenly the seawater became disturbing and large waves surrounded me. I couldn’t control the boat anymore.

Finally she straightened up with a satisfied smile and entered the store. Behind the counter stood Pete himself, a man not more than 30.

The whole class burst out laughing as Bruce rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red pajama top(睡衣上衣) underneath and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green shoes that were two sizes too big.
Bruce said quietly, “Sorry teacher”and walked to his seat. Mr. Tan looked at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly turned to silence. Bruce’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out often, they would be entertained by Bruce’s late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing.
Bruce lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would shout his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Bruce was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Tom, who sat next to Bruce, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, Bruce did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Tom decided to walkover to Bruce’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Bruce must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Tom let himself in. He called Bruce’s name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Tom looked in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Bruce was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow (琴弓) over the strings expertly. He played beautifully, so much so that it sounded like a recording. Tom left quietly.

It was one of those sunny mornings when merely breathing seemed to be an event worth celebrating. I was in a particularly good mood as my mother had just given me RM400(马来西亚币)for my daily expenses during the week that she would be away with my father in China to visit her sick grandaunt. I was wondering if I survived on bread and butter the whole week, I would have RM300 to buy the latest computer games! It was certainly a great way to begin the day.
As I neared the classroom, I heard a loud noise coming from it and quickly rushed in. My classmates were gathered around Tommy’s table as he searched through some personal items. Tommy had always been a popular boy in class. Not only was he bright and well-mannered, but he also came from a wealthy family that provided him with all he could ask for.
My classmates told me that Tommy had lost the money that he had brought as a donation to the welfare home that we were supposed to visit that afternoon. Understanding the situation, I suggested that we organize a search around the classroom and inform the class teacher as soon as possible. In no time, Miss Soh rushed to the classroom. She decided to run a search through everyone’s bag. We quickly stood by our tables and emptied the contents of our bags onto the table. When it came to my turn, I took out all my possessions. As Miss Soh took out the RM400 from my wallet, the class fell into a shock.
Up till then, I had no idea that the amount lost was exactly RM400. Everyone stared at me in horror. Miss Soh was pleased that her efforts had borne fruit. In a loud voice, she demanded to know where the money had come from. I told her the truth, but she appeared not to have heard anything that I had said. She claimed loudly that I was the thief, because my family was poor and could not possibly afford to give me RM400.

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was 13, I climbed my first mountain — a fairly gentle 3,900-foot peak. I was overweight at the time and became breathless after reaching the top. But I loved the challenge of conquering something bigger than myself, and soon I’d climbed nearly 100 peaks.
I often go climbing with my friend Mel. Two years ago, on 30 December when I was 16, we drove to tackle 11, 240-foot Mount Hood. It’s safer to start winter climbs at night when there’s less risk of the sun melting the snow. That day, we started at 3 a.m., though the temperature was extremely low.
Five hours later, we reached Devil’s Kitchen at about 10,000 feet. However, the wind was blowing fiercely. The other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead since we thought we were well prepared.
The path became harder and harder to climb. At around 9 a.m., we reached a narrow ice step. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on the ice step. Confident I was safe, I put my full weight on it. Suddenly, I heard a crack and fell backwards. I stuck out my arms and legs, grabbing at anything. That helped but I was still sliding. Finally, I stopped somewhere above the Devil’s Kitchen. Having fallen 600 feet, I found my face bloodied.
To make sure if I still had my senses, I asked myself, where are you Mount Hood. What’s the date 30 December. Good. My brain still functioned. Then I took a survey of my body, starting with my head, then my neck and arms. For the most part, I was fine, except for a sharp pain in my left leg. Strangely, touching my left leg, I couldn’t feel anything, so I tried to make my toes move. Fortunately, that worked — I wasn’t paralyzed (瘫痪).

参考答案:
1.Paragraph 1:
“I have to leave,” I told Jim as I grabbed my keys and headed toward the door. I knew where I could buy a big sunflower. I drove to the arts and crafts store, found their only big sunflower and bought it. I rushed home, searched through my collection of hats, and grabbed the cotton one. I sewed the sunflower in front, smiled at the new hat I’d created, and called Amy, “I’ve replaced your hat, sweetie. Now, you can feel better and sleep tonight.”
Paragraph 2:
Unexpectedly, Amy’s mother, Betsy, flew down at the weekend to celebrate my birthday and she was amazed when she saw the hat. “Let me take this back to Amy. She’ll be excited!” The next evening I checked my e-mails and discovered a video titled “The hat”. I watched as Betsy opened her suitcase and handed the hat to Amy who was speechless. Amy walked to a mirror, posed in the hat, then ran to the camera and said, “Grandma, I love you. And thank you for getting me another hat. I like it better than the other one!” I was pleased that I had made my granddaughter happy.

On the last page, I wrote, “Dear Kash, you are not the one left behind. Liya and I are so sorry about the way we messed things up.” Pierced to the heart with guilt, I gingerly tucked the paintings into an envelope, hoping this would be an icebreaker.
The next day, I handed my pages of apology to Kash. He took it, looking surprised at the first sight. After he read it, an expression of intense joy illuminated his eyes. Blushed, I broke the silence, “I’m sorry, dude. We should have talked to you.” With her eyes fixed on the floor, Liya came over and apologized in a low voice, “You mean a lot to us.” Hearing her words, Kash shook his head and beamed, “I was way too sensitive.” We exchanged a knowing smile, realizing that sincerity, trust and communication were always the key to clearing up the misunderstanding between friends.

I had never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end, I walked off the stage, with my eyes filled with tears.
Finally, I heard the results announced after the contest and felt sad. I did not win any prizes, which was not surprising at all. I felt rather ashamed when I faced my classmates and of course, Ms. Sara. I regretted my foolish behavior. On the following day, I went to visit Ms. Sara and apologized. Ms. Sara held my hands, seriously saying, “It’s OK. But from this, you should learn that pride goes before a fall and that practice makes perfect.” I nodded my head and promised to keep this experience as a life-long reminder.

My heart pounding fiercely and my hands holing on to the edge of the boat, an inner voice told me that I had to balance the bout and pull the boats towards the beach. Though I spared no efforts to achieve that, I failed and grew to wear out. At that moment, I felt I was going to drown here today and my consciousness became blurred.
When I came to life, I found myself in a hospital bed. My parents and all my siblings standing by me, they all looked concerned and relieved. My mom told me that it were my siblings who were able to swim who saved me. The moment they noticed I was in danger, they rushed to my rescue and sent me to the hospital. Her cruel words cut me deeply. Never before in my life had I been so overwhelmed with such grievance and helplessness that I stood there motionless. All my classmates were shaking their heads at me, totally convinced of the teacher’s claims. Driven by a strong inner voice of protesting my innocence, I made the last attempt, declaring firmly, “I am not the thief!” Unsurprisingly, it didn’t work. Feeling dizzy on the spot, I grabbed my bag, dashed out of the classroom and headed home with tears in my eyes. The entire week was spent in a state of confusion-I kept to myself a lot, choosing not to talk to anyone.
A week later, when taking Miss Soh’s class, Tommy suddenly found the neatly folded RM400 slip out of his notebook. Seeing the money, he froze in puzzlement. He picked it up immediately, lost in thought. After a while, Tommy put up his hand, signaling to say something urgent. Miss Soh stepped off the platform and came up to Tommy. “What’s the matter, Tommy ” she asked with concern. “Miss Soh, here is my RM400,” he murmured. On hearing that, all my classmates were shocked, exploding into whispers. I, who was wronged by the teacher, sat still in the chair, anticipating something. Then both Miss Soh and Tommy approached me to say “SORRY” to me. It was their sincere apology and Miss Soh’s tender embrace that erased the shadow enveloping me all those days.

Mel stayed by my side while I tried not to cry from the pain. I’d been lying on the ice for four hours before the rescuers reached me. They pulled me down the mountain and at the bottom of Mount Hood, I was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital, where I stayed for four days.
The doctors advised me not to climb again but I wouldn’t give up. This fall could never be the end of my climb. Apart from doing everything the doctor required, I attended other various training courses for faster recovery. Luckily, I was back on the trails within six months. Since the accident, I’ve challenged another 60 mountains with more caution and better preparations of course. I have made up my mind that I’m not going to let one fall keep me from doing my favorite thing in the world.
