When high school students spend time memorizing and reciting a poem, they develop confidence by engaging deeply with language. Here are my five Cs-things I’ve observed from several years of teaching students through Poetry Out Loud, from selecting a poem to performing at the state competition.
Choice.____6____ Students learn how to search for poems, and they have complete discretion (判断力) over the poem they will perform. Students often gravitate (被吸引) to poems that fit their reading level and also match a personal interest or philosophy, which is great. But there are also lots of unexpected mismatches that end up stretching students’ skills in ways a teacher could not work out.
Concrete learning task. Learning just one poem well gives students a finite and concentrated experience with language. ____7____ I’ve seen students with all manner of challenges get up and do something they thought was impossible, in large part because it involves a single, repeated exercise.
Continuing learning. Students learn a poem that will likely stay with them for years, if not forever. Poems contain mysteries and complexities that reveal themselves slowly- and sometimes even suddenly-over time. ____8____
Confidence. Recitation is the perfect introduction to public speaking skills. All students need to be able to speak effectively in front of others. ____9____Students learn elements of physical presence, voice, speed, volume, and tone without having to present their own work, which is more frightening for most students.
____10____Students are not asked to memorize much anymore, yet many of them take pleasure in the act of repetition and remembering. They like testing themselves and realizing that they can in fact recall lines. For English language learners, many autistic students, and other exceptional learners, reciting poetry is an especially powerful way to understand language and build confidence. For our kids who need small victories, mastering one poem is a welcome relief.
A.Practice memorizing poems.
B.Challenging memory and recall.
C.This is the first step of the exercise.
D.Performing a poem is a bit like acting.
E.And every student can learn one poem.
F.Therefore, it is a lasting course to learn poems.
G.As a result, it is beneficial for students to learn poems.

How to Leave Your Comfort Zone
The comfort zone is a behavioral state within which a person uses a limited set of behaviors to deliver a steady level of performance, causing their progress to cease. But life is full of opportunities to step outside the comfort zone. Here are some ways one might try to do so.
Do everyday things differently. In everyday life, there are plenty of opportunities to challenge yourself. Turn off your smartphone and television while having dinner, decide what to wear more quickly, or just slow down to take in the surroundings on a walk. ____46____
Try a new diet. Many people want to improve their diets and stop relying on “comfort foods”. ____47____ Shifting to a healthier diet can be as challenging as it is rewarding, with self-trust growing as you hit milestone goals along the way.
____48____ Many people are longing for this goal. For some, it can mean running their first 5K. But for others, it might be completing a marathon. Aiming higher with exercise is representative of leaving the comfort zone and a great way to get the ball rolling.
Get creative. Creativity—anything from writing a poem to building a business—usually involves an element of risk. ____49____ Therefore, failing and accompanying learning are expected outcomes. Exercising creativity is a good way to train yourself to have a growth mindset and let go of a need for perfection from the outset.
Challenge your beliefs. It’s easy to get stuck in our ways, but this can lead to self-satisfaction—a feature of being in the comfort zone. ____50____ While this can be uncomfortable, it enables growth and insight by challenging deep-rooted beliefs. This might take several forms, such as reading varied book genres, diversifying who you talk to, and visiting new places.

B.Motivate yourself with a new sport.
C.Doing so often means trying something new.
D.Creative efforts are about stepping into the unknown.
E.Therefore, we need to explore alternative perspectives.
F.These changes break you out of old, comfortable routines.
G.Benefits of leaving the comfort zone won’t happen overnight.
No one’s perfect. Here, Kamran explains why he believes perfection isn’t a realistic goal.
You are chasing a myth. ____51____ So it’s exhausting keeping up with the idea, in your head, of what perfection is. You’ ll be constantly updating your concept of it from one day to the next. This can lead to you being overly self-critical. Instead of feeling happy with what you’ve achieved, you feel dissatisfied.
____52____ A constant reach for perfection can be very distracting from the present moment. When you get to a certain place that you’ve worked towards, instead of noticing it, embracing it and enjoying it, you switch to wanting more. This leads you into a trap of constantly re-evaluating areas of your life. Life can actually be very good in the present moment, like when you’re appreciating friends and family and celebrating the little wins.____53____
____54____ Without realizing, you can end up finding and picking out imperfections in others and becoming an overly critical person who expects too much. You might find people want to distance themselves from you, or you may find challenges arising more frequently in your personal relationships.
Your mental health can suffer. Not only might you feel anxious that you’ re not where you want to be in life, you may feel emotionally low as a result of desiring perfection and constantly critiquing aspects of your life. ____55____ They are mentally, emotionally and physically draining and can leave you feeling burnt out or even depressed.
A.You’ll not abandon it.
B.Perfection doesn’t exist.
C.You might judge others unfairly.
D.You won’t enjoy the small things.
E.This can cause feelings of being defeated.
F.Exercise can help remove the bad feelings.
G.All these can go unnoticed if you’re focused on future-based thinking.
Digital technologies are taking up too much of our time and attention. Many of us will spend a significant part of our lives staring at screens, missing out on satisfying relationships and feeling more emotional pain. For many years, we’ve been taught that the solution to this potential harm is some form of digital detox (脱瘾), which mainly shows us what not to do after our digital addiction. ____56____ Try the following three steps to achieve balance in your and your family’s digital life:
Determine your problem times
Identify the times and situations when being on screens is making your life worse. It could be when you are streaming a TV series right before bed, feeling depressed afterward and losing hours of sleep. Or you could be getting stuck on your device at the dinner table and end up getting distracted. ____57____ Identify your top two or three problem situations.
____58____
Once you identify the pain points, for example, scrolling (滚动浏览) on TikTok for hours keeps you from sleeping and makes you feel depressed afterward), ask yourself: What is screen time replacing and what goals is it serving In other words, what are you actually hungry for You might be endlessly scrolling because you want to feel uplifted at the end of the day. Write down the things you really want.
Try a substitute
____59____ It’s crucial to pick something that consistently makes you feel good. For example, if your goal is social connection, make plans for a nice meal with a friend or take that weekly meeting in person rather than via Zoom. If your goal is inspiration, schedule time for oil painting, reading historical fiction or whatever it is that uplifts you. ____60____ And at last, you will become empowered, healthy and wise digital citizens.
A.Identify your true desire.
B.Determine your pain points.
C.Pretty soon, these replacements will make you feel more satisfied.
D.But the only way to truly gain control is to take positive steps in advance.
E.Or maybe you are inefficient at work because you’re doing too much online shopping.
F.Ask yourself how you can meet those needs through something other than screen time.
G.If your digital life is out of balance, reducing time on devices is an important first step.
Your eyes can water for many reasons, including weather, allergies (过敏) or, more seriously, an infection. ____61____ They might help explain why it’s happening.
Watering due to weather
Changes in seasons typically can cause changes to the eye due to the amount of humidity in the air and allergens. As winter approaches and we increase heat at home, work and in the car, the air loses humidity, which causes the eye to become very dry. ____62____ But the type of tear produced doesn’t help lubricate (润滑) the eye and results in watering of these extra tears.
Pink eye
Pink eye is one of the most frustrating eye conditions. It commonly causes red and very watery eyes. ____63____ It is contagious (接触传染的) and can lake multiple weeks to resolve. Unfortunately, since pink eye is usually caused by a virus, no antibiotic eye drop can resolve the condition.
Watering and dry eye
____64____ Tears are made of three ingredients and, if there’s an imbalance in these, the tears won’t stay on the eye and will result in watering. Most commonly, it’s because the oil layer of the tears is lacking.
Eye scratches
A scratch on the cornea (角膜) is extremely painful and will cause redness, blurred vision and watering. The cornea is one of the most sensitive parts of the body and usually heals quickly with appropriate treatment. If you think your eye is scratched, it’s best to see your eye doctor as soon as possible. ____65____
A.Otherwise, it can easily become infected.
B.Most pink eye is caused by a virus, like the common cold.
C.So your eyes try to help increase the amount of tears produced.
D.This can cause redness and dryness of the eyelid itself and watering.
E.Even just walking through an area with allergens can cause eyes to water.
F.It seems not logical, but watering is the most bothersome sign of dry eye.
G.If your eyes water suddenly, watch the environmental factors you’re being exposed to.
It’s the middle of winter, when daylight is limited and the weather is often miserable. ____66____ So what can be done to lift our spirits
The shorter days and longer nights can make us feel down, and that can cause us to eat more and exercise less. Some fear loneliness and isolation during the long dark months. Those people who suffer this seasonal mood swing more seriously are described as having seasonal affective disorder — or SAD for short. ____67____
Jenny Scott-Thompson is one person who was diagnosed with SAD.____68____ As well as going outside during daylight hours, this is believed to help anyone who is affected by the winter gloom.
Although having more light is an obvious cure, antidepressants (抗抑郁药) can help those with more severe depression by artificially increasing the amount of serotonin (血清素) in the brain. But this isn’t suitable for everyone. ____69____ Clinical psychologist Laura Keyes says, “it can be helpful to think about how to adapt your eating and exercise patterns to the change of season.”
____70____ Writing for the BBC Social website, Esther De La Ford asks “What if we explored what winter has to offer us, instead of grieving those things that it is taking away ” She suggests we use this time for rest, reflection, slowing down, stillness and renewal. Maybe this might stop us longing for summer.
A.Many of us can try to just change our mindset.
B.For some of us, this is when the winter blues set in.
C.As advised, she took an active part in social activities.

F.It’s a type of depression with a seasonal pattern caused by a lack of light.
G.She was advised to take light therapy, which involved sitting in front of a light box.
When I read that we spend almost three hours every day checking our smartphones, I was shocked. What was I missing in the real world when walking down the street, lost in a virtual world of social media updates and videos of dogs on bicycles I promised myself I would use my smartphone less, but it didn’t happen. Then one day my phone died and I had to wait a week for a new one.____71____I thought it would be hard, but in fact it was quite easy—and surprising in a good way for a number of reasons!
The first consequence was quite amazing—On the first day in the office without my phone, I was thinking more deeply and concentrating more. I rediscovered my brain!____72____Another consequence was that I actually talked to people more and felt more connected to them. I realized I was being more responsive to their news and sympathetic to their problems because I wasn’t constantly checking my phone. ____73____Their kindness made me feel welcome, and I discovered my brain has very good GPS!
At the very beginning, I was worried that I would be bored without my phone, but actually I enjoyed it—I’d forgotten how much I love books and newspapers.____74____And I also sensed that I slept so much better and felt more awake in the morning.
At times it was inconvenient to have no mobile internet connection, but all in all, there were a lot of benefits from not being connected 24/7. So, if you think you use your smartphone too much, put it away for a few days and see what happens.____75____
A.Would I survive
B.What’s the problem
C.You never know, you may become smarter!

How to set up a library of things
Instead of cluttering(乱推放)our homes, garages and the planet, setting up a library of things allows neighbours to borrow and share huge, pricey goods. ____76____ But instead of borrowing books, local people are borrowing drills, pasta makers and guitars for an affordable fee. Here’s how to start your own:
Talk to your neighbours
____77____ Do they feel their home is too cluttered Do they want to do their bit for the environment and spend less money Link into local networks and ask people to vote on a “wish list” of items they could borrow.
Find a space
Start small in someone’s garage or local market to see what items are most popular. Then find space in buildings in urban areas with high footfall such as libraries or community hubs.____78____
Why start a Library of Things
We were living in a small house and needed some tools to put up shelves. We didn’t want to own the tools and hiring them was expensive! ____79____ Inspired by tool libraries in the US and lending libraries in Berlin, we started a small Library of Things locally and seven years later we’re running five Library of Things locations across London.
What other impact on the local area
We’ve run very successful events led by borrowers such as mending meetups, sewing classes, DIY classes. ____80____ Borrowers have previously tested out new food businesses at the market by using our items. And for every 10 someone spends on borrowing, 8 stays locally, creating local jobs and supporting the local community spaces.

China is witnessing fewer people tie the knot over the past few years, especially since the Outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. ____81____
A decline in the number of people of marriageable age is one of the reasons behind falling marriage registrations and marriage rate in China. ____82____ Delayed marriage is another driver of the decline in the marriage rate. ____83____ From 2000 to 2020, the number of Chinese women who received higher education rose from 16.87 million to 154.6 million. Women who receive higher education tend to delay plans to marry and raise a family. ____84____They are less financially dependent on their partners and have higher expectation of the quality of marriage and their partners. This makes them marry later in life, consequently raising the proportion of unmarried Chinese women. Moreover, fierce competition in the job market has made the younger generation put off marriage until they are older, if not give up the idea.
The Chinese government is paying growing attention to the phenomenon of delayed marriages and the declining marriage rate. ____85____

Plants need an ample amount of sunlight for them to grow properly. ____87____. Before starting an urban garden, make sure you’ve conducted a few weeks’ worth of observations about how sunlight behaves inside your home at different times of the day. 53.分析设空,空处位于段尾,应是本段的总结句,根据前文“Life can actually be very good in the present moment, like when you’re appreciating friends and family and celebrating the little wins.(当下的生活其实是很美好的,就像你感激朋友和家人,庆祝小小的胜利)”所以G项“All these can go unnoticed if you’re focused on future-based thinking.(如果你专注于基于未来的思考,所有这些都可能被忽视)”是对前文的总结,符合文意。故选G项。
54.分析设空,空处位于段首,是本段的中心句,根据后文“Without realizing, you can end up finding and picking out imperfections in others and becoming an overly critical person who expects too much. You might find people want to distance themselves from you, or you may find challenges arising more frequently in your personal relationships.(在没有意识到的情况下,你可能会发现并挑出别人的缺点,成为一个过于挑剔、期望过高的人。你可能会发现人们想要与你保持距离,或者你可能会发现人际关系中出现的挑战越来越频繁)”可知,本段主要讲述了,追求完美的人,会过渡的苛责他人,所以C项“You might judge others unfairly.(你可能会不公正地评判别人)”是本段主题,符合文意。故选C项。
55.根据前文“Your mental health can suffer. Not only might you feel anxious that you’ re not where you want to be in life, you may feel emotionally low as a result of desiring perfection and constantly critiquing aspects of your life.(你的精神健康会受到影响。你不仅会因为没有达到你想要的生活而感到焦虑,还会因为渴望完美和不断批评生活的方方面面而感到情绪低落)”以及后文“They are mentally, emotionally and physically draining and can leave you feeling burnt out or even depressed.(它们会让你在精神上、情感上和身体上精疲力竭,甚至感到沮丧)”可知,此处是在讲述过于追求完美,会造成你精神上的伤害,所以E项“This can cause feelings of being defeated.(这会导致挫败感)”符合文意,下文“They”代指选项中的“feelings of being defeated”。故选E项。
