One evening a terrible storm came, and the rain poured down. Suddenly there was a knock on the city gate. A girl was standing in front of the gate. The water ran down from her hair and clothes. And yet she said that she was a real princess.

What do you do when a friend tells you he/she is lonely?
Perhaps you think if someone is lonely, it’s their fault, or that since you’re so busy, you couldn’t possibly do anything to help. Loneliness can hit anyone from time to time, but if you’ve failed to help a lonely friend, here are some tips for doing better next time.
It’s easy to ignore a friend’s loneliness, especially when you have a life full of people and you’re busy. You might even think it’s stupid to admit (承认) that you’re lonely.
But being lonely doesn’t mean someone has few friends. There could be a number of reasons for this. Perhaps their close friends have moved away, perhaps something unexpected has pulled them away from some of their friends, or any number of things that can happen to anyone at any time. Another wrong belief is that lonely people just aren’t busy enough.
Don’t say these things to a lonely friend:
● Lonely? Ha! I never get lonely! I’m so busy.
●Why don’t you have any friends?
●Oh, I’d love to have some quiet time as you have.
●I wish I were lonely, but my kids keep me running.
●You’ll be fine. You’ve got your kids/your dog/your job …
These statements make you sound smug (沾沾自喜的) and indifferent, even when you really want to help them.
43. The passage is written mainly to .
A. share some ideas about making friends
B. explain why people feel lonely sometimes
C. give advice on how to help a lonely friend
D. suggest some ways to get rid of loneliness
44. When one of your friends is lonely, you’d better .
A. not talk with him about his kids
B. not show you are always busy
C. let him help you with your job
D. bring him a pet to play with
45. The underlined word “indifferent” in the last paragraph probably means “ ”.
A. uninterested B. popular
C. busy D. lucky

A. How you can be a good friend.

C. How people make friends with others.
D. What to do with a friend who is lonely.

What is more important to a high school student than being popular? Anyone who has ever gone to high school or at least seen a John Hughes’ movie knows the answer to that question. When Theresa Sommers first discovered MySpace three years ago, the teen from Minneapolis, St. Paul thought she had found the real high school popularity contest (比赛). She could spend hours a day creating an online picture, finding cool pictures and music to make her page look more beautiful, and looking for interesting-looking people to be her online friends. And along the way, she could compete (竞争) with her friends to see who had the most friends or most-visited page.
The more she used the site, however, the less interested she became in only being popular; she started using her time for more heartfelt conversations with friends and went more deeply into her personal interests. As a beginner in taking pictures, she put her best pictures on the site and looked for advice from people who are good at taking pictures.
At the same time, she began to get in touch with the students of the colleges she wanted to go to. She opened up a new account (账户) on Facebook. And she even began to put some of her own creative writing on the website and would ask for advice on homework from her friends. She asked them, “How long did you spend on your homework?” or “How would you write it?” Often she would put her homework online.

It’s best if you can start bathing your cat young and get him used to it, but even if you have an older cat that has never been bathed, it can be done without any harm to you or the cat. The following tips will help you a lot.
Prepare everything ahead of time, and stay calm. Long rubber (橡胶) gloves are necessary if you are bathing a cat that hasn’t been bathed before, to keep from scratching (抓伤). Talk to your cat, and hold him by the back neck when you are putting him into the water. It won’t hurt your cat, and it only holds him still; it is the same way the cat’s mother holds him when he is young.
Brush some dirt from your cat’s hair. Dirt won’t fall if you get him wet. Use cat specific shampoos, especially if you’re bathing for fleas (跳蚤). Dog flea shampoo can be toxic to your cat, so you use it very carefully. Run 5 inches of warm water into your bathtub. Gently place your cat into the tub, and use a cup to wet his body with warm water. Lather (打肥皂) the cat’s body with the shampoo, including his tail, and make sure to lather his underside as well.
Once the body is lathered, gently wet his head and then lather it, making sure not to get soap in the cat’s eyes. Wash your cat’s body, and then do the head. Wash until you can’t feel shampoo in the cat’s hair any more. Dry your cat in a towel. Don’t try to use a hair dryer on your cat. If he has long hair, just use another towel and get him as dry as you can.
51. In the writer’s opinion, you had better .
A. bathe your cat when it is young
B. not bathe your cat because it can hurt you
C. start bathing your cat as it’s old enough
D. get your cat to be used to bathing often
52. When you put your cat into the water you should .
A. hold it by the body very firmly
B. catch it in the way its father does
C. hold it by the neck next to its back
D. hold it by the back and keep it still
53. What does the underlined word “toxic” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Clean and strong.
B. That is very useful.
C. Nice and important.
D. That can cause death.
54. We can learn from this passage that you .
A. should brush your cat’s hair after it is wet
B. should keep the eyes of your cat from soap
C. should lather the head of your cat gently first
D. can use a hair dryer on your cat to dry its hair

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to learn that you’re about to start high school and want to make friends there. Now, I’d like to give you some advice on how to make friends in a new school.
First of all, you should be friendly to anyone who you meet at the new school. Also always remember to be as kind and helpful as possible! Secondly, it would be a good idea to remember their names, because people like it when you call them by name. Thirdly, you can take part in after-school activities you like. Even if you don’t know anyone there, you share a common interest and it’s easy for you to become friends. Lastly, don’t be too hard on yourself. Making new friends takes a lot of time and effort and you should believe in yourself.
I hope that you will find these tips useful.
Yours,
