There's no other time of year quite like fall.Cool mornings give way to afternoons warmed by the sun and the changes in temperature create beautiful colours before winter sets in.So, grab your camera for one of nature's most impressive spectacles—the changing colours of the leaves during fall.
Acadia National Park, Maine
Peak leaf season in Acadia traditionally falls within the first two weeks of October. This is when you will see the bright displays of oranges, reds and yellows. While visiting Acadia, plan to stay at the nearby coastal town of Bar Harbor, which is considered to be the gateway to the park. While in the town, treat yourself to a traditional lobster dinner at Beal's Lobster Pier.
The Berkshires, Massachusetts
Peak season starts around Columbus Day weekend in mid-October, and you can expect to see colours ranging from golden yellows to vivid oranges and deep reds. The Berkshires features world-class entertainment, cultural offerings and a deep-rooted food culture with many locally focused dining options.
Mckenzie River Scenic Byway, Oregon
Plan your visit for peak season when the golds and reds are most bright, usually in mid-October.The Mckenzie River has some of the best fly-fishing sports in Oregon. For a great getaway that includes days spent on fly-fishing, white-water rafting and hiking to waterfalls, make reservations at Eagle Rock Lodge for a romantic bed and breakfast.
Charlottesville, Virginia
Mid to late October is when you'll usually see the most dazzling red, orange and yellow leaves, but the colours can linger into early November. When you're not watching leaves, plan to visit Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, the former home, gardens and grounds of the third president of the United States. In the evenings, enjoy live music at the Mill room.

My wife and I were at a crowded grocery store not long ago.It was a weekday evening, cold and wet and tense.People were carelessly blocking aisles, complaining and cutting one another off with their carts.
Things got worse at the checkout line. The cashier scanned a man's discount card, but he misread the savings on her screen as an additional charge. He decided she was acting deliberately and began to argue.
“She is being spiteful (恶意的)!” he yelled.“This is unbelievable.”
Other customers looked away as the cashier tried to reason with him.She called a manager, who accompanied him to customer service.Shaken, she moved to the next customer in line.
We've all witnessed uncomfortable scenes like this in public places. The grocery scene was another example of how our trust in others has eroded. But it was also a teachable moment on how we can rebuild our faith—starting with just one person.
Back at the grocery store, my wife and I reached the uneasy cashier.I grabbed a bottle of water from a nearby cooler and handed it to her.“We felt bad about how that man treated you and wanted to buy this for you,” I said. Her face lit up, and we talked as she scanned our items. She told us she had been working that evening with severe foot pain and would be having surgery later that week.We wished her well in her recovery, and she thanked us as we left.
Those are the balancing acts, the moments of responding to social and emotional pain with healing, which will add up to restore trust among people. You can start that pattern in someone else's life, even in a place as ordinary as the neighbourhood grocery store.

[湖南岳阳2023高二期中]
For parents in the Pacific Northwest, one constant fear is how safe their children will be at school if an earthquake strikes. Now, children at one school in the Stanwood-Camano School District in Washington State will get a warning ahead of time to take cover before the most sharp shaking begins.
Stanwood Elementary School is the first in the state to be able to send warnings over the loudspeaker before a large earthquake. The school has connected to the ShakeAlert early warning system, which is a system that gathers data from seismometers (地震仪) that can detect the earliest seismic (地震的) waves of an earthquake, sending warnings before the more powerful shaking hits.
Bill Steele, director of Communications and Outreach for the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington, said the amount of warning students will get depends on where the earthquake happens.
“If it's an earthquake on the southern Whidbey Island fault, it may only be a couple of seconds' warning,” Steele said. “But if it's an earthquake, say, on the Seattle Fault or the Cascadia Subduction Zone, you could have a warning of 20 or more seconds.”
Students across the state of Washington will practise earthquake safety this Thursday.Stanwood Elementary School will explain how it uses the public-address system to tell students to “drop, cover and hold on” after it receives a ShakeAlert.
“The main idea is to protect your head and get down so that you don't get knocked over by the earthquake, and ride it through,” Steele said. And then afterwards, teachers will decide whether they wish to make an orderly escape or not.
“At least eight other school districts are exploring connecting to the ShakeAlert system,” Steele said. The earthquake warnings are not available to the general public yet.Steele said the aim is to have that ready by October next year.

For sports fans, there's nothing better than watching a live event on TV or at a sports venue (活动场地).But there's nothing worse than that event being called off because of bad weather.Bad light, a waterlogged pitch (场地) or excessive heat can cause matches to be postponed. But according to the latest research, extreme weather might be disrupting (打乱) the sporting calendar more than ever in the future.
In one sport, golf, major tournaments like The Open, are already predicted to be victims of our changing climate. In the UK, an organisation called The Climate Coalition says that golf courses such as St Andrews could be under water by the end of the century if sea levels rise even slightly. It told the BBC that its research predicts“cancelled football matches, flooded cricket grounds and golf courses crumbling into the sea”.
The threat to sporting fixtures (体育赛事) from climate change has been further highlighted in a new report, commissioned by the Rapid Transition Alliance.Writing about this for the BBC, Matt McGrath says that “By 2050, it's estimated that almost one in four English football league grounds can expect flooding every year.” This will mean fewer matches played, less opportunity to watch the beautiful game and reduced revenue (收入) from ticket sales.
Cricket also faces huge challenges globally as temperatures rise in places like India, Australia and the West Indies. The report says that stadiums in Adelaide and Perth will see a 60% increase in days with temperatures over 40°C over the next decade.
Of course, we know that the solution lies in reducing our carbon footprint. We could travel less to attend sports events, and reduce our waste when we do go.But this latest report finds that sports leaders are generally failing to address the issue seriously. However, because sport is universally popular and can be very influential, maybe it should be players, teams and their sponsors who promote a carbon-neutral message to help protect sporting venues—before it's “game over”.

第二节 (满分25分)
[重庆长寿中学2022高二月考] 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighbourhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was very unfriendly to them.
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to have them fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realised he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that would be held for the boys in the city. When he learnt that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win the new shoes.
The day of the race arrived. Ali had a good start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted, he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third.
