My wife loves Christmas songs, and she loves to sing them. Sixteen years ago, while we were driving on vacation, she decided to pass the time by singing “The Christmas Song”.
Then she began to sing this favorite song again and again. Suddenly, I had an idea of playing a trick on her. When she got to the line “Jack Frost nipping at (轻咬) your nose”, “Why are you singing that song ” I asked.
When she looked confused at my question, I pretended to be surprised that she was unaware of the story. I went on to lie to her that Christmas songs often had a dark past and that Jack Frost was the name of a violent patient who escaped from an insane asylum (疯人院) on Christmas in the 1920s and went around biting faces, particularly noses.
She was shocked—no, horrified!— that people would sing about him.
Fast-forward to a couple of years ago. It was snowing outside and I was in a good mood. I started singing “The Christmas Song” and my wife scolded me in a joking voice for singing a song to the world’s most terrible mad man. I had no idea what she was talking about.
She then said that Jack Frost, the nose biter, had forever ruined that song for her. I laughed and admitted that I was joking that day and I honestly didn’t think she believed my joke.
Apparently, for the past 16 years she had shared this dark and terrible story with anyone who would listen. As it dawned on her that she’d been cheerfully spreading a lie for so many years, I guessed a sea of confused and disbelieving looks and a crowd of people staring at her as if she were a nose biter.
As for me, I am now the King of Lies who is never to be trusted by a cute and attractive heart again.

A previously unknown population lived what’s now southwestern China around 14,000 years ago and contributed to the ancestors (祖先) of ancient Americans.
This Asian group’s identity has been revealed thanks to ancient DNA from a skullcap (头盖骨) at Mengzi Ren, or MZR, a site in southwestern China’s Red Deer Cave, researchers report July 14 in Current Biology. The finding offers a rare opportunity to narrow down where the ancestors of ancient Americans came from in East Asia’s vast land.
Professor Bing Su of China’s Kunming Institute of Zoology and workmates recovered nearly all the fossil (化石) individual’s mitochondrial (线粒体) DNA, typically from the mother, and roughly 3.3 percent of the nuclear DNA, which is from both parents.
The new genetic analyses (分析) and comparisons with present-day and ancient people conclude the MZR person’s DNA as that of a female from southern East Asia. Much like East Asians today, the ancient female’s ancestors included small contributions from other races.
Su’s group found that the MZR woman carried genetic ties to ancient people in the Americas who date to as early as about 12,000 years ago. Some ancient southern East Asians traveled up China’s eastern coast, possibly by way of Japan, and crossed a land bridge to North America, the scientists guess.
28. Where does the passage come from
A. A fashion magazine. B. A school textbook.
C. A travel booklet. D. A Science report.
29. What did Professor Bing Su and colleagues do research on
A. MZR. B. DNA. C. Skullcaps. D. Races.
30. What can we learn from the passage
A. Researchers studied ancient DNA from a skullcap in southeastern China.
B. Researchers recovered all the mitochondrial DNA from both parents.
C. The MZR person’s DNA belonged to a female from southern East Asia.
D. Ancient Asians traveled across China’s main land to North America.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Ancient DNA links an East Asian woman to early Americans.
B. Ancient DNA from a skullcap has been discovered successfully.
C. Professor Bing Su of China has made a great new discovery.
D. Ancient southern East Asians traveled to North America.

Getting a fright from a dream is very normal, but our brains don’t have a secret plan to shock us with nightmares (噩梦).
In times gone by many people believed that dreams were a window to another world. People lived two inseparable lives: one in a waking world and the other in a dream world. They believed the dream world contained a mixture of the past and the future, and it might help people find purposes with their lives. Others saw them as a sign from the gods. No wonder some people found dreams frightening!
When scientists first studied dreams around 200 years ago, they thought dreams were a particular type of story that brains told themselves. Scientists thought it was a special language where ideas and feelings were explained using symbols and signs.
Around 100 years ago, French scientists began to study sleep by measuring the electrical activity in the brain. They found that there are two main types of sleep-rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep. During REM sleep, your brain is active and the eyes roll quickly behind your eyelids. REM sleep is when we are most likely to dream. Non-REM sleep, on the other hand, is often called deep sleep. In this type, people sleep soundly and don’t typically report dreaming.
Over the past 50 years, some scientists have started to think that dreaming was a time for the brain to decide what to keep and what to throw away each day. In a sense, it’s like cleaning your room.
Lots of people wonder why dreams are frightening. The truth is that we don’t know for sure. What we do know is that all people dream, and all people think dreams can be strange, frightening and puzzling at times. We share the ability to dream with all warm-blooded animals, so it probably has an important function in keeping us healthy.
32. What can be learned from Paragraph 2
A. People tended to look outside through dreams.
B. People succeeded in finding life goals in dreams.
C. People were sometimes frightened of dreams.
D. People mixed up the past and future in dreams.
33. By measuring the electrical activity in the brain, French scientists find that_______.
A. people are fully awake during REM sleep
B. people don’t have dreams during deep sleep
C. people usually sleep better during deep sleep
D. people are unlikely to dream during REM sleep
34. Which of the following do people agree on
A. Both people and animals are able to dream.
B. Dreams are too strange to make sense of.
C. There’s no reason for frightening dreams.
D. It may be of importance to have dreams.
35. What does the text mainly tell us
A. Dreams are nothing to worry about.
B. Dreams have a bad effect on sleep.
C. Brains work hard during sleep.
D. Brains contain various dreams.

【原文】Hello, Ryan. This is Sarah. Thanks so much for your party. It was a big surprise and I really enjoyed it. I’m sorry that I had to leave early. My dad was worried about the traffic. In the end, we got to the airport at 8:00 p.m., much too early. Then the flight finally took off three hours later. My mom disliked flying, so she was quite stressed. Altogether, it wasn’t much fun. Fortunately, New York time is five hours behind London, so it was still Sunday evening when we arrived. New York is really different from London, and I feel quite strange. Yesterday my cousin Sam and I went to Fifth Avenue, where we saw some amazing stores. I was surprised at the prices. Things are much cheaper here. Of course, I bought some presents for you and your family. I sent them to you by post. Now I’m quite tired of traveling, and I can’t wait to go home to Los Angeles! Ryan, don’t forget to call me back. Bye.

24. What was the author’s first reaction when his wife mentioned Jack Frost again a couple of years ago

D. He admitted that he had made up the story.
25. Why did the author make up the story of Jack Frost
A. He was very tired of hearing the song .
B. He wanted to make a joke on his wife.
C. He just wanted to stop her from singing.
D. He intended to show off his knowledge.
26. Which statement is true according to the passage
A. Jack Frost was a violent patient fleeing an insane asylum.
B. Her wife also played jokes on others with the same story.
C. People were doubtful about the story his wife told them.
D. The author was regretful for having telling a lie to his wife.
27. What might the author think of his wife

【答案】28. D 29. B 30. C 31. A

Getting a fright from a dream is very normal, but our brains don’t have a secret plan to shock us with nightmares (噩梦).
In times gone by, many people believed that dreams were a window to another world.
A People tended to look outside through dreams.
C There’s no reason for frightening dreams.
D. It may be of importance to have dreams.
35. What does the text mainly tell us
A. Dreams are nothing to worry about.
B. Dreams have a bad effect on sleep.
C. Brains work hard during sleep.
D. Brains contain various dreams.
