●Virtual Artful Conversations
Find out what you can discover when you spend an hour exploring a single work of art! Each month, our museum educators and special guests will lead a 60-minute guided discussion of a masterpiece from the National Gallery's collection. Registration is required for this free programme. Adults must attend the session alongside children(ages 7—12).
●Art Investigators Tour
This free programme helps children(ages 4—7) make careful observations, analyse artists' choices, and use their imagination while exploring works of art. Led by museum educators, each programme includes reading a children's book, exploring one work of art in the galleries, and completing a simple hands-on activity. Each programme is approximately 60 minutes.
●Family Workshops
Workshops provide the opportunity to explore artists' thinking. Taught by museum educators, each workshop includes a conversation in the galleries. Family Workshops are designed for children(ages 8—11) and adults to attend together. Workshops are free but preregistration is required. Sign-language interpretation is available for Family Workshops.

Bob enjoys breakfasts of caviar (鱼子酱), swims in his own salt water pool and receives foot massages on the beach. A comfortable life, perhaps, but you could say he deserves it. Bob serves as an ambassador for conservation. Bob, you see, is a flamingo (火烈鸟).
Odette Doest rescued Bob in 2016, after the bird crashed into a window in Curacao and hurt his left wing. While taking care of the bird at her wildlife sanctuary (野生动物保护区), Doest discovered that Bob had previously been trained by people. He felt at ease with people, but he suffered from bumblefoot. The foot disease would have weakened his ability to catch food in the wild.
For those reasons, Doest decided to keep him as an educational animal at her sanctuary, alongside 90 other animals. When Doest began taking Bob on her foundation's weekly visits to schools on the island, the flamingo became famous instantly.
“Bob is like the hot item—everyone likes Bob,” Doest says. That's because most people have never seen such an elegant colourful bird up close. “Just don't try to take a Bob's selfie. That's not what Bob is about,” Doest says firmly. “I have Bob for students to think about nature and the environment, and a slight change in their habits can have a big effect on nature around us. ”
That could mean choosing reusable cups instead of plastic bottles or skipping the balloons at a birthday party or picking up rubbish on the beach—all things Doest says children take to heart because they're so dazzled by Bob. Many of Doest's rescued birds were caught in fishing lines. In her talks, she stressed the environmental threat caused by fishing lines, along with plastic pollution.

A spoonful of pickles (腌菜) can sometimes make a meal taste better. Recently, a new type of pickle is being discussed: “digital pickled vegetables”. It refers to the videos people watch while eating that make their food more appetising.
The topic received more than 16 million clicks on Sina Weibo and about 100,000 people participated in the discussion. Instead of being accompanied by friends and family during a meal, many young people in China are kept company by TV shows or short videos. Many believe that their food is tastier with the “digital pickles”.
Can this habit affect your diet According to a research paper published in 2019, you may eat more unconsciously. The international research team asked 62 volunteers to follow different eating patterns on four different days. The patterns included eating while looking at the mobile phone, reading magazines and without distraction. After analysing their diets, the team discovered that eating with a distraction increased caloric intake by about 15 percent.
C
To explore the reason, the team also invited two groups of people: one group ate while listening to an audio clip about another person eating and the other listened to a clip that helped them imagine themselves eating. The results showed that the second group ate less since they were more focused on their meals. When eating with the “digital pickles”, our attention can be distracted, which leads to eating more than expected.
This works not only for eating meals but other demanding tasks as well. A research project led by the University of Sussex, UK, pointed out that activities which require lots of attention trick many participants into overeating. The team invited 120 participants to do various tasks while providing them with drinks and snacks. “Our study suggests that if you're eating or drinking while your attention is distracted by a highly engaging task, you're less likely to be able to tell how full you feel. ” one of the authors Martin Yeomans explained.

8.What do “digital pickles” refer to ( )
C
A.A new type of vegetables. B.Electronic products popular online.
C.Videos people watch while eating. D.Digital games suitable for families.
[解析] 细节理解题。根据第一段中的 Recently, a new type of pickle is being discussed: “digital pickled vegetables”. It refers to the videos people watch while eating that make their food more appetising. 可知,digital pickles 指的是人们吃饭时看的视频。故选C项。

B
A.They are more focused on their meals. B.They are distracted by “digital pickles”.
C.The food tastes better with “digital pickles”. D.The “digital pickles” make them feel hungrier.
[解析] 推理判断题。根据第四段最后一句可知,边吃边看视频时,我们的注意力会被视频分散,所以吃得会比预期的多。故选B项。
10.What can we learn from the experiment carried out by the international research team ( )
C
A.It explores the reason why people prefer “digital pickles” while having meals.
B.Eating while hearing another person eating can keep one more focused on his meal.
C.Eating while imaging oneself eating can keep one more focused on his meal.
D.When eating without the “digital pickles”, we are bound to eat less.
[解析] 细节理解题。根据第四段中的 To explore the reason… The results showed that the second group ate less since they were more focused on their meals.

Notpla is a London-based firm that makes a seaweed-based substitute for single-use plastic packaging. Although some of Notpla's products are suitable to be eaten, they are designed to be dissolved (溶解) after usage. The company's film wrap is made of seaweed lining instead of a conventional plastic-based coating. This makes the film fully biodegradable and ideal for use as packaging for cupboards and bathroom supplies like toilet paper.
According to the United Nations, 331 million kilogrammes of plastic garbage is produced annually around the world. Roughly 60% of the estimated 9. 15 billion tons of plastic produced since the early 1950s has been taken to landfills or abandoned outdoors.
Plastic harms the water, the air, and our bodies. Many experts agree that single-use plastic is unnecessary and dangerous. Some governments and towns in the United States have taken action. New York has banned most plastic shopping bags, while plastic straws (吸管) have been banned in Miami Beach. Overseas, India stated in August that it plans to put a wide ban on single-use plastic this upcoming summer, with the European Union already implementing this ban.
Seaweed comes in a variety of species and can be harvested or farmed. Notpla uses plants that have been farmed. Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez and Pierre Paslier, the inventors of Notpla, initially considered seaweed as a solution to the world's plastic problem for several reasons. Seaweed is abundant and grows quickly. Additionally, it doesn't compete with land crops and is highly favoured for its ability to remove some waste products like carbon from the atmosphere.
In cooperation with the online food ordering service Just Eat, the startup recently tested its product. Last year, the two companies handed out 30,000 takeaway boxes at various UK restaurants. Plans are in the works to offer the boxes across Europe. Notpla's team intends to replace single-use plastic in the supply chain more generally as they expand. The company recognises the difficulty of such a job given the volume of plastic consumed around the world.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to Turn Your Goals Into Habits
First we make our habits, then our habits make us. It's such a simple concept, yet it's something we
don't always do.
I believe that having ONE goal to focus on is much more powerful than having many goals. By
putting the belief into practice, I have achieved a lot of personal goals over time. 16. .. My answer
takes a little explaining. I try to turn my goals into habits! I put my goals on automatic pilot (习惯
性). Turning a goal into a habit means really focusing on it for at least a month. The more you can
focus, the more it'll be on automatic pilot. 17. . . You'll still do it, but you only have to use minimal
force to maintain it, and you can focus on your next goal or habit.
G
D
Take my marathon goal as an example. I was just starting running and had the brilliant idea of
running a marathon within a year. So that was my goal. 18. .. First, I had to make running as a daily
habit. Second, I had to report to people in order to have accountability (责任) so that I could not
quit easily. I focused on the daily running habit for about a month, and didn't have any other goal or
habit. When the running habit stuck, I started reporting to people I knew and blogging about my running
every day.
19. .. I could focus on new goals without having to worry about the marathon. I still had to do the
running, of course, but it didn't require constant focus. And eventually, I ran the first marathon in my
life. I was able to achieve this because, all year long, I had daily running and accountability habits.
20. ., so instead of struggling with it daily for an entire year, I focused on it for one month and was
able to accomplish it while focusing on new habits and goals.
B
F
A
A. I put my marathon goal on automatic pilot
B. But in order to achieve it, I broke it down into two habits
C. With this accountability, there's no way I could stop running
D. Once you put it on automatic pilot, you don't have to focus on it much
E. In the beginning, it was very difficult for me to achieve this goal
F. Once those two habits were established, my marathon goal was pretty much on automatic pilot
G. My readers asked me how I was able to achieve them while working on different projects

There will be a lecture about Confucius next week in our school. Since you are very interested in Chinese culture, it is a good chance for you to know something about Confucianism.
The lecture will be held at 6 pm next Friday in the school hall. The invited professor will focus on one of Confucius' sayings in the book The Analects of Confucius—keep cherishing old knowledge, so as continually to be acquiring new. If you would like to attend it, remember to be there at 6 pm next Friday.
Yours,
Li Hua

After leaving college, Lisa entered a company and began to work there. The work wasn't very tiring. Though the pay wasn't very high, Lisa loved working there. Sadly, about ten years later, a devastating blow (毁灭性的打击) came to her company, and over a two-year period the business dropped out of sight. Lisa lost her job as a result.
At that time, Lisa had already got married and had a five-year-old son. And her husband David, couldn't make enough money to support the whole family. Lisa began to feel guilty that she wasn't contributing any kind of income after losing her job. But she had faith that everything would be okay.
Lisa began to hunt for a job. However, finding work was difficult for her as she didn't hold an important position in her former company. It felt as though she would never be called for a job interview.
One day, Lisa came across her former colleague, Jenny. They greeted each other and then began to talk. Through talking with her, Lisa found that Jenny had already found work in a large company.
Lisa wasn't very surprised. She knew Jenny had been learning new languages after work. As far as she knew, Jenny could speak French, Spanish and Italian. Besides learning new languages, Jenny also spent much time improving other skills. When once advised to do that too, Lisa said she didn't have to. She didn't think that she'd lose her job one day.
They didn't talk for long as Jenny was going to meet a client.
“Goodbye, Lisa. I wish you good luck,” with these words, Jenny left.
Lisa watched Jenny walk away. She looked so confident. Lisa really regretted not learning anything new after work.
“If I have learnt new things like Jenny, I must have already found new work,” said Lisa to herself.
That day after coming back home, Lisa talked with her husband. She told him about Jenny's new work.
“Honey, why not follow Jenny's example It's never too late to learn something new. So why not start now ” said her husband.
“You're totally right, honey,” said Lisa.

That night, Lisa thought about what she should do next. Since it was difficult to find a good full-time job, she decided to find a part-time job first. Lucky for her, a French couple in her neighbourhood were looking for someone to look after their one-year-old son. Lisa applied for the job and she got it. She knew it was a good opportunity for her to learn French. So she began to learn this language and tried her best to speak French with the couple.
Besides learning French, Lisa also tried to improve her computer skills. About one year later, she tried hunting for a job again. She sent out applications and a few days later, she got replies, asking her to have job interviews. Finally, Lisa got a job she truly wanted. Though Lisa had managed to find a job, she knew she shouldn't stop learning new things. She would keep learning so that she would find new work easily if she lost her job again. That was an important lesson she had learnt from Jenny.
