He’s a comedian, he’s an actor, he’s British and the whole world knows him as the silent, black haired character, Mr Bean. He’s Rowan Atkinson.
Atkinson was born in Newcastle, England and was educated at Newcastle University and Oxford. While at Oxford, he met the writer Richard Curtis, who was studying there too, and they became friends. Curtis was the opposite of Atkinson. He had a great love of words while Atkinson enjoyed nonverbal comedy.Together they began writing comedy reviews for the Oxford Playhouse. Shortly afterwards, Atkinson began appearing in smaller theatres in Edinburgh. After a show at the Hampstead Theatre in 1978, he was offered a part in the BBC series Not the Nine O’Clock News. The series got off to a slow start, but soon became a huge success, with Atkinson winning a BAFTA award for his work. However, being a very sensible man, Atkinson saw the whole acting job as a hobby, along with his growing interest in car racing.
综合素养检测
Atkinson made his big screen debut (初次亮相) in 1983’s unofficial James Bond film Never Say Never Again. The same year Atkinson appeared in the BBC series called Blackadder. The main hero named Edmund, tries unsuccessfully to become the King of England after accidentally killing his uncle Richard Ⅲ during a battle. This was followed by three hugely successful sequels (续集) each set in a different era of England’s history. The Blackadder series was voted the Best Comedy Show of the Year in 1990. He then went on to create Mr Bean. Mr Bean was a purely comic figure, the opposite of Edmund. This character was a huge success and became another national treasure. In 1997 Mr Bean came to the big screen. A few years later, Scooby Doo became a box office hit in the US in 2002. This was followed by Johnny English in 2003, a funny work of James Bond films.
In his spare time Atkinson collects classic cars and takes part in races. He also writes for the British magazine CAR. He is a very shy man, and has managed to keep his private life private.

[湖北四校2021高二期中]Do you need a human to create a beautiful scent (香味) That’s the question being asked as artificial intelligence (AI) starts to enter the perfume industry.
Companies are increasingly turning to technology in order to create more best selling, unique fragrances that can be produced in just minutes. Last year, Swiss based fragrance developer Givaudan launched Carto, an artificial intelligence powered tool to help perfumers. Through machine learning (a way computers improve outcomes automatically by learning from past results) Carto can suggest combinations of ingredients.
Using a touch screen, the perfumer can pull together different scents using data from the brand’s vast library of fragrance formulas (配方)—a much more efficient process than using traditional forms. A small robot immediately processes the fragrances into perfumes, making it easier for perfumers to test their new scents.
综合素养检测
German fragrance house Symrise has gone one step further and teamed up with IBM Research to create an AI tool called Philyra. Like Carto, Philyra can’t actually sniff anything. But it is not designed to replace perfumers.
“It’s machine learning and sometimes the results have been wrong,” says Claire Viola, vice president of digital strategy fragrance at Symrise. “It's still a project. The more we test, the more it continues to improve. It constantly needs training.”

The year 2020 marks the beginning of the decade of the yold, or the “young old”, as the Japanese call people aged between 65 and 75. The traditional retirement age in Japan is 65. One might therefore expect peak retirement for baby boomers. By continuing to work and staying socially engaged, the yold will change the world, as they have done several times before at different stages of their lives.
The yold are more numerous, healthier and wealthier than previous generations of seniors. The yold are busier, too. In short, the yold are not just any group of old people. They are challenging the traditional expectations of the retired as people who wear slippers and look after their grandchildren. That will influence consumer, service and financial markets.
The over 60s are one of the fastest growing groups of customers of the airline business. The yold are vital to the tourism industry because they spend much more, when taking a foreign holiday, than younger adults.
综合素养检测
But for all this to happen, three big things will have to change, under pressure from the yold themselves. The most important is public attitudes towards older people, and in particular the expectation that the old ought to be putting their feet up and quietly retiring into the background. Then, government policies will have to change, too. The retirement age in many rich countries is still below the age to which many people want to work. The effective retirement age (the age at which people actually leave the workforce) is usually even lower. Third, higher numbers of healthy yold people will require drastic (急剧的) changes in health spending. Most diseases of ageing are best met with prevention and lifestyle changes. But only about 2%—3% of most countries' health care spending goes on prevention. That will have to rise, because although the yold will constitute a bulge of comparative health and activity over the next decade, by 2030 they will hit 75 and enter a long period of decline for which few rich countries are ready.
综合素养检测
12.What kind of people are the yold exactly
A.They are workaholics. B.They are full of energy.
C.They enjoy being focused on. D.They like staying socially engaged.
13.Why do the yold contribute to tourist industry
A.They like travelling more. B.They have more money.
C.They consume more on travel. D.They have much free time.

14.What’s the author’s attitude towards health care spending on prevention

When Dr. Henderson was assigning (指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped that he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely competitive and extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运)would have it, Dr.Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.

I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren’t there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn’t mean or abusive; he just gave me the impression that he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn’t look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.

When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well being of teenagers. I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. Though I wanted to share my ideas with him, I failed to do so for fear that I would hold him back. I just kept nodding when he asked me whether his opinion was acceptable. I thought it was impossible to persuade him into accepting my view, so there was no need to waste our time on discussing. I just hoped that the presentation day could come earlier.
One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. I thought I should visit him immediately. He was quite surprised to see me when I showed up with flowers. Plucking up the courage, I offered to do the rest of the work of our project and he invited me to share my ideas to perfect it. We began to work as a fine team. Finally, our hard work paid off and Dr.Henderson was very satisfied with our wonderful findings as well as our cooperation. From this project, we both learned the significance of teammates. Just as the saying goes, one person can go faster, but a group of people can travel further.
