To personal trainer Sammy Callari, 13-year-old Parker Seward is more than a client (客户).He's his “little brother”.Over the past year, the pair have bonded. They play basketball together, share meals and dance to hip-hop like no one is watching.
The trainer was asked to work with the 13-year-old boy, who has Down's syndrome (唐氏综合征), because his co-worker who dealt with the boy was out of town last spring.Callari had never worked with someone with a disability before. He was anxious the first day he met Parker. But Parker's big smile and cheery introduction immediately put him at ease.He reminded Callari of himself when he was a teenager.Like Parker, Callari had also faced quite a few challenges over the years.
As a high schooler, Callari described himself as being the weak kid. When it came to sports, he was always overlooked. His dream of playing baseball in college quickly faded away. When he went to college,
Callari turned to a new sport. His younger brother trained him to become a boxer.Callari participated in five matches. In four out of five fights he was the underdog, but he won three times.“I know how it feels,” Callari said.“Society tells you that you can't do this or you can't do that.” When it comes to Parker, Callari refuses to accept the word “can't”.
The friends meet twice a week to train. They bike, box, run and work out with push-ups.Parker has a short attention span, so it's Callari's job to keep him focused.“If Parker can do it, and if he's having fun, even with his frustration, then people will ask, ‘Why can't I do that ’” Callari said.“That's the whole task right now.”

[山西太原2022高三期末] If you're gathering your teenage kids in the living room to watch The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+, just know there's a good chance they'd rather play Fortnite, a popular game.
That could totally be the case according to a new study from a consulting firm in Deloitte, which analysed the generational divide in at-home entertainment.
The study, based on an online survey of more than 2,000 consumers, showed preferences are changing rapidly between millennials and the younger generation when it comes to how they want to spend their leisure time.
For Gen Z, referred to as those born from 1996 to 2009, videos—whether movies or television shows—are not a priority, the study found.26% of Gen Zers in the survey said playing video games is their favourite entertainment activity, compared to 14% for listening to music, 12% for browsing the
Internet and 11% for engaging in social activities.Only 10% said they would rather watch a movie or TV show at home.
As for millennials (born from 1983 to 1995), 18% of them regard watching movies or TV shows as their preferred mode of entertainment.Video games are the entertainment option for 16% of millennials.
“Gen Z would much rather spend time gaming, listening to music or using social media,” Jana Arbanas, entertainment leader at Deloitte, said.“That was a really alarming contrast that we saw relative to the shift that's happening and how Gen Z will impact this industry.”
“Millennials took the behaviour they developed as teenagers, and they've taken them forwards into their early 30s, and so if Gen Z is anything like that, their behaviour may change slightly, but I don't see complete ageing out of their behaviour,” said Kevin Westcott.

[福建师大附中2022高三期中] Today's journalists face modern challenges.Online media platforms are springing up.And the newspaper—and its reporters—are fighting money, tech, and distrust issues.Journalism students and teachers must develop new skills to keep their profession alive.
A trustworthy press helps inform people and monitors all levels of government. That is essential to a nation.Yet this useful establishment is growing increasingly unpopular.According to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill(UNC), newsroom jobs across the country are fewer than half what they were 10 years ago.And on many college campuses, the news about the news is bleak too.
Take the student-run newspaper The Daily Orange in Syracuse University, New York for example. It isn't daily anymore. The paper prints just three times each week.Next year, The Diamondback of the University of Maryland will be online only.Half the newspapers that still exist say they don't print many copies. And UNC's The Daily Tar Heel has cut staff pay and rented cheaper offices to blance its budget.
Considering the problems in journalism, it's surprising that the enrolments (注册人数) in college journalism programmes are up.The Daily Orange's managing editor Catherine Leffert calls the lay-offs and cutbacks disheartening.“But what keeps me wanting to be a journalist is seeing the effect that The Daily Orange has,” she says.
But journalism educators wonder, “Are we preparing young people for a dying industry ” Years ago, journalism graduates took up low-level reporter jobs at newspapers or television stations. That sill happens. But today's jobs more often involve digital editing, social media production, and video streaming. Some universities are taking action. The University of Florida offers a sports media programme.Several schools highlight statistics-driven data journalism.
The news isn't all bad.Journalism professor Kathleen Culver says, “When I look at 18- and 20-year-olds in journalism and see what they want to do, I'm optimistic.” Maddy Arrowood is the student editor of The Daily Tar Heel. She says her experience makes her more interested in a journalism career, not less. Her optimism comes from knowing that people still need news. They still need information.

A.Useless. B.Interesting. C.Hopeless. D.Encouraging.

Birdsong
“Nothing will ever be the same again,” Ally whispered. She sank slowly into her father's favourite chair and stared at the small American flag on his desk.It was the flag which Chief Russell had given to her after the funeral (葬礼) last summer, when he hugged her and told her how proud the Police Department was of her dad's work for them. His tears had warmed Ally's cheeks, and her own tears were still frozen inside her heart.
Ally looked at her father's picture on the bookcase.Dad was sitting in the middle of a stream, wet through but grinning proudly.“I miss you, Dad,” she said softly.By this time last year she had already taken dozens of pictures.Ever since she could remember, she and Dad had been a team, searching the woods behind the house each weekend for a glimpse of the special wood warbler (林莺).
Ally reached for the first photo album she and Dad put together. On the cover is a tiny orange bird with blue-grey wings and sharp black eyes.Peering at the photo her father had clipped from a local newspaper, Ally smiled, remembering the excited look on his face when he first showed her the pretty bird, “Ally, I bet if we search really hard, we'll see this little guy together some day.”
They'd never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special.Staying with Dad, Ally felt comfortable.“If only I could get that good feeling back,” she sighed.
Staring at the bird, she suddenly knew exactly what she had to do.Grabbing the little flag, she placed her camera around her neck and hurried outside.Ally stuck the flag among the flowers in the garden.“Please let me see the warbler,” she murmured to herself. She gave her worried Mum a kiss and then set off for the woods.

Familiar smells of the earth rose up to greet her. Some things never changed, Ally thought.Quickening her pace, she hurried to the rock by the stream where she and her father used to sit and eat lunch. She sat on it, with her face towards the sun.The sky was filled with birds busily diving to gather dried grass to place it in their nests.Their sweet songs echoed throughout the woods.Ally felt content for the first time for a long while. She could almost hear her father's laughter in the gentle breeze as she listened to the sweet songs of the special birds. All too soon, the sun disappeared behind thick grey clouds.
Determined to start out again the next morning, she was about to head home when ringing birdsong floated down to her.It was prettier than any she had heard before. An excited feeling bubbled up inside Ally as she searched the sky.A flash of orange dashed down and rested on a nearby branch. For a moment Ally couldn't believe her eyes, but it was true. The tiny wood warbler just sat there, looking around, as if it were waiting for something.Ally blinked back tears.“Thanks, Dad,” she whispered, slowly lifting her camera and taking aim at the bird carefully.“Things will be different without you.I'll always miss our time together, but I feel better now.”
