Is there anybody out there For centuries human beings have been wondering. As we've gained greater understanding of the universe, however, our searches have taken on a more concrete form. Questions about aliens have become a subject for science rather than science fiction and philosophy.
Now a new cooperation(合作)between the Very Large Array observatory in New Mexico and the privately funded Seti Institute in California could mean that our curiosity about aliens is closer than ever before to being satisfied. Data from the VLA's 28 giant radio telescopes will be fed through a special supercomputer that will search for distant signals. Scientists who work at the Seti Institute said the announcement means their research is now “almost mainstream".
How likely it is that a signal will be found, and what this might mean, are hard questions to answer. Seti's existing projects haven't detected any life signals from other planets so far. But recent discoveries in space and Earth sciences have provided some encouragement to those who are enthusiastic about the likelihood, however remote, of detecting other civilizations.
While once it was thought that our solar system could be unique, since the discovery of the first exoplanet (a planet in another solar system) in the 1990s, thousands more have been located(确定位置). Around one in five stars are now thought to have a planet in their orbit in a so-called “habitable zone"—that is at a distance from the star where the temperature(neither too hot nor too cold) means that life is theoretically feasible.
If there is another life form somewhere, could it be as intelligent as us Or cause a risk to us, as the physicist Stephen Hawking once warned As investigations of Mars continue, our interest in the possibility of alien life appears clear—especially when conditions in our own earth appear even more unstable.
28.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A.Global cooperation helps to study aliens. B.Searching for aliens is becoming a trend.
C.Aliens have caught wide attention globally. D.There are many uncertainties about aliens study.
29.What is the encouraging news to searchers for distant civilizations
A.VLA has developed new radio telescopes. B.Seti has detected signals from other planets.
C.More and more exoplanets have been found. D.Other civilizations have been located in a habitable zone.
30.What does the underlined word “feasible" in paragraph 4 most probably mean
A.Possible. B.Tough.
C.Easy. D.Certain.
31.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A.Literature. B.Health.
C.Education. D.Science.
D
Harper Lee was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960, which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck won three Academy Awards.
For decades, the book was Lee’s only major work of published fiction, but it was hugely influential for generations of US readers. It has sold more than 10 million copies, and is one of the most widely taught novels in the US schools. In 2007 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to literature.
Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. The world, however, continued waiting for a new novel from her, and on occasion she suggested that she had a story in progress.
In 2015, a book did come out. Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as an adult. Accusations arose that the 89-year-old Lee was not able to agree to the manuscript’s release, and that various parties had signed on her behalf.
Though Lee moved to New York in 1949, she spent many years guarding her privacy (隐私) in Monroeville, which served as the clear inspiration for the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird.
In 2007, Lee suffered a stroke (中风), but recovered and later settled in Monroeville permanently to care for her sister, Alice, who died in 2014. She was said to eat breakfast every morning at the same fast-food spot, and was friendly with her neighbors. The countless Americans knew her only through her works, and they will undoubtedly miss her.
32.What can be learned about Harper Lee from the first two paragraphs
A.She was regarded the greatest writer in America.
B.She made great contributions to American literature.
C.She once starred in a film adapted from her own novel.
D.She got her novels well accepted in most American schools.
33.Why did Harper Lee disappear from public life after her first novel came out
A.She tried to get out of accusations. B.She wanted to write another novel.
C.She intended to avoid being bothered. D.She wasn’t comfortable with her novel’s influence.
34.What can we learn about Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman
A.It tells her own life story. B.It is adapted into a famous film.

My favorite classic novel is The Adventure of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his Aunt Polly on a quiet street in St. Petersburg, Missouri. He’s a lively, clever boy, and he finds himself in many exciting adventures. He runs away with his two friends, Huck Finn and Joe, to an island in the middle of Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he goes looking for treasure, with Becky he gets lost in a cave, and finally they find a box of gold. My favorite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead, he decides to go to his funeral. He hides and watches for a long time, and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is surprised to see him but they are also pleased to see him alive.
Tom is the hero of the story. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him. Becky is pretty with fair hair. Joe is Tom’s best friend and Injun Joe is the bad man of the story. The theme of the story is about children growing up. We learn about American culture in the book. Finally it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished for bad behavior.
The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is great. It is thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature. Go on-read it. I think you’ll love it.
