【Teaching Objectives】
1. instruct students to read and talk about Ludwig van Beethoven;
2. guide students to read for deep understanding;
3. teach the basic skills of summarizing information;
【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the lesson, students are going to:
1. get more information of Beethoven and his symphony No.9;
2. work out how to use graphic organizers to organize information in a text;
3. learn some good qualities from Beethoven;
【Key points and difficulties】
1. read for deep understanding;
2. summarize information;
3. pay attention to detailed information;
【Teaching Process】
Step 1 Lead-in
Sing a song and play a game to activate the background information. To study purposefully, ask students to read learning objectives together. (Divide the students into two groups and name them after words related to music. During the class, use group competition to enhance learning initiative.)
Step 2 Read and Explore (practice reading skills)
1.Skim the text and complete the tasks
1) Predict and skim the text silently to check the predictions and complete the mind map.
2) Skim the text and try to find out the answers of the following questions, write it down on paper.
1. What is the main idea of each paragraph (Ask students to match them)
2.How many parts can this article be divided into (Ask students to fill in the graph)
(Students answer the questions above independently as a benchmark assessment)
2. Scan the text and fill out the form.
1) What was Beethoven thinking when he finished the symphony
2) How do you think Beethoven felt before and during the performance
Step 3 Post-reading
1) Retell the life of Beethoven
(Students volunteer to answer these questions to assess the learning result)
2) Discuss: what qualities do you think made Beethoven “A Musical Genius” (Emotional objectives)
Discuss as a class, and teacher makes a conclusion to deepen students’ understanding about “genius”.
Step 4 Self-assessment
By the end of the lesson, ask students whether they are able to:
1) get more information of Beethoven and his symphony No.9
2) work out how to use graphic organizers to organize information in a text
3) learn some good qualities from Beethoven

Write a passage entitled “ My understanding of genius” with no more than 150 words
