3.“It was not until Caroline, one of the singers took his arm and turned him to face the audience that the great man realized his symphony was the success.”
Ask : why does the author compare them( The behavior of the audience and Beethoven)
It shows that the performance was a success and Beethoven was a deaf person.
An Emphatic Sentence is used to show the fact:
The great man didn't realize his performance was a success until Caroline, one of the singers, took his arm and turned him to face the audience. =
It was not until Carolina, ... ,took his arm and turned him to
face the audience that the great man realized his performance
was a success.
Para. 6 Why does the author share Caroline's comments ?
“ The audience had no idea that he was deaf. ”
Ask : If you were at the concert, how would you think of Beethoven's behavior?
Probably he was completely absorbed in his music.
Ask: What was Caroline feeling by saying “the one person in the room who didn't hear the symphony --and never would-- was the very man who composed it.”
She felt , among other feelings, very very sorry that Beethoven couldn't hear the music he composed. It was such a pity and she might feel it unfair to him. She must have wished that Beethoven was not deaf.
Pay attention to the structure of the text:
How do we understand the title “ A Musical Genius”
Despite losing his hearing, Beethoven bravely struggled with the deafness to continue to write music , showing his strong will/ strength to overcome his disability and showing his love for life and for art.
Although he lived in the world of silence, he brought the sound of nature and beauty of art to the world.
There is no doubt that he was not only a genius in music but also a superhero in real life, just like Christopher Reeve.
Step 4 Post- reading
Ask: If you were Beethoven, how would you deal with the deafness
Ask : What is a genius
Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.
This is the mark of a really admirable man---- steadfastness in the face of trouble .
令人敬仰的人有一个特色:面对困难时仍不屈不挠。(Beethoven) (第二册)
