2023年高三高考英语外刊阅读理解训练——什么是 AQ?
——改编自How do you measure a person's resilience
AQ, or adversity quotient, is a measure of our ability to cope with the difficulties life throws at us. AQ can predict attitudes, perseverance, longevity, and how we learn from changes in our environment. Being able to deal with adversity is essential not only in personal life but also in professional life. A setback in the workplace, such as redundancies, restructures, or missed promotions, can happen unexpectedly, while problems outside work include financial difficulty, bereavements, and relationship breakdowns.

Dr Shahram Heshmat, a professor of health economics at the University of Illinois, suggests some ways to become more resilient. First, it is important to have a meaningful goal, which will enable you to focus on achieving the desired outcome despite negative situations. Second, developing emotional regulation and relaxation techniques are crucial in helping reduce stress levels. Breathing exercises are one of many effective methods used to relieve tension. Third, it is important to seek opportunities for personal growth and view difficulties as a learning opportunity. The last step for becoming more resilient is to ensure that you have a good social support system available to provide comfort and guidance during difficult times.

In summary, having a high AQ means being able to withstand adversity and come out stronger on the other side. By setting meaningful goals, regulating emotions, seeing challenges as opportunities, and having a strong network of support, we can improve our resilience. We cannot always control what happens to us, but by practising these four steps, we can be better prepared to cope with whatever adversity comes our way.
