It is widely accepted that the adoption of electric vehicles will help reduce carbon emission greatly as we fight climate change, but there are still problems to solve before they are fully adopted. One of the biggest hurdles to the full adoption of electric vehicles is the lack of charging infrastructure (充电基础设施) across the U. S. Now, more than 50 power companies in the U. S. have joined forces to create the National Electric Highway Coalition (NEHC), which plans to build a coast-to-coast fast charging network by the end of 2023.
The Edison Electric Institute has announced the formation of the National Electric Highway Coalition, which includes 50 EEI members, Midwest Energy Inc., and the Tennessee Valley Authority.
“EEI and our member companies are leading the clean energy transformation, and electric transportation is key to reducing carbon emission across our economy,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn in a statement. “With the formation of the National Electric Highway Coalition, we are committed to investing in and providing more charging infrastructures necessary to promote electric vehicle growth and to help relieve customers’ anxiety.”
“The auto industry is committed to vehicle electrification and will invest over $330 billion in the technology by 2025. Additionally, a record number of EV models are expected to be available in this time frame,” said Alliance for Automotive Innovation President and CEO John Bozzella in a statement. “More importantly, this latest announcement by the Edison Electric Institute is one more step to furthering the adoption of EVs.”
To date, EEI’s member companies have invested more than $3 billion in projects to improve the EV charging infrastructure. EEI estimates that the U. S. will need more than 100, 000 EV fast charging ports to support the expected 22 million EVs that will be on the road in 2030. “This, however, is only one piece of the puzzle. Dealing with issues such as grid resiliency (电力网弹性), energy demands for charging, and equitable rollout (展示) of charging infrastructure will be an important and necessary part of a successful future of EVs,” said Tom Kuhn.
With nearly every major automaker announcing plans to change their lineups to fully electric vehicles, the EV charging network needs to be improved greatly.

Changing jobs every couple of years used to look bad. It tells employers they can’t hold down a job, can’t get along with colleagues, or that they’re simply disloyal. That thought is fast outdated; the newcomers expect to continuously learn, develop, and advance in their careers.
There are a lot of arguments for changing jobs every few years. The economy isn’t what it used to be and never will be again. Workers who stay with a company longer than two years are said to get paid 50% less, and job hoppers (跳槽者) are believed to have a higher learning curve (曲线), and even to be more loyal, because they care about making a good impression in a short time and they know they’ll stay with each employer.
Patty McCord, former chief talent officer for Netflix, says young people should plan to change jobs every three to four years. “I think that the most important change in people’s thought is to view employees as smart contributors from the beginning. Everyone here wants to come in, do a great job, and contribute, then they either fit or they don’t. You build skills faster when changing companies because of the learning curve.” McCord says.
Why is the learning curve so high Because job hoppers place themselves outside of their comfort zones constantly. They join companies, know they have to learn fast, make great impressions, and improve the bottom line. As a result, they’ re usually overachievers and learn a lot in a short time.
McCord adds: People used to think that the longer they kept an employee, the more worth they were to companies. In fact, an employee who stays on the job and isn’t learning at a really high rate is not doing good work. But the employees that job hunt are the most receptive of becoming extremely useful, very fast.
McCord believes that the learning curve nearly flattens after three years. If one wants to make a difference, he should leave. Employee retention (留任) is a big issue, and it makes employers anxious, says McCord. They’ve invested a lot in hiring big talent. To that, McCord has some advice: In 15 years, your company is growing rapidly because of all the high, job-hopping achievers that have come and gone.
11.Why are job hoppers more loyal
A.Because their financial situation isn’t good.
B.Because they value good impressions in a short term.
C.Because they can get their pay to rise by 50%
D.Because they want to get no arguments with others.

Rob Shuter is a gossip columnist (漫谈栏作者), born partially deaf, with severely limited function in the one arm that is shorter than the other. Shuter’s own experience made him not only interested in what distinguishes people from one another, but also confident in his own differences.
Where does he gain such confidence Shuter says that his family helps him grow up in spite of his special needs. “My mum taught me that being different wasn’t just fine, it was great,” he says. That opinion helped him handle many challenges that he faced.
Being a disabled child affected not just how he saw himself, but how Shuter saw other peopled who didn’t quite fit in. He says, “It made me really aware of how I look at people: I make eye contact; I really listen. I try not to judge a book by its cover and to find beauty in the strangest places.”
That’s why he never tucks away his arm and speaks so openly about his experience. “I have got a huge scar down my arm and if somebody asks or looks at it weirdly (怪异地), I don’t feel bad for myself or bad for them,” he says. “It’s true in beauty too when you notice things on your face or your body that nobody else does. The more out in the open my arm is the fewer people notice it.” He said again, “If you have a spot on your face, you really don’t need to cover it up. Just own it! If you are losing your hair, own it! The amount of effort and time people spend trying to cover something up, even their own personalities, is ridiculous.”
That candor (坦率) has worked well in his professional life. The gossip columnist refers to himself on his website as Naughty But Nice Rob. He’s honest about the stars’ faults, but he tries to do it through a lot of humor and kindness, in the same way he treats himself.

Some hearing loss is a common — and nearly unavoidable — effect of aging. A third of people aged 60 and older have lost some of their ability to hear.
But some research suggests a habit that might help offset the effect of aging on hearing. A study found that among middle-aged adults, being a lifelong musician was connected with better hearing later in life.
“The instrument you play does not seem to be important here,” says Nina Kraus, a biologist. “It is really the act of engagement playing the instrument that matters.”
Participants in the study were between ages 45 and 65. Researchers tested 18 musicians who had been playing an instrument since age nine or younger, and 19 non-musicians who had less than three years of music training.
The musicians had statistically better auditory memory scores and tested better at hearing speech in noisy environments. They also showed better auditory processing abilities, which relate to how people interpret speech sounds.
However, the two groups tied when researchers tested visual working memory skills. “It isn’t as though musical training has a volume knob effect that makes all kinds of sensory processing enhanced in the same manner,” Kraus says. “It focuses on auditory skill.”
The latest findings follow earlier research from Kraus that showed musician in a younger age group had better hearing skills. At the same time, some research has shown that musicians who play in large ensembles (合奏) may face an occupational risk when it comes to their hearing.
Does this effect apply to the guy who plays in a community band one night a week Kraus says no. To be included in the study, musicians were required to have engaged in musical activities-practicing, teaching or performing-at least three times a week.
“What we do with our time and how we engage our senses and our thinking seems to really shape the people we become in very basic ways — in ways that affect how our series work,” she says.
And, Kraus says, a person doesn’t need to be an Itzhak Perlman or a Yo-Yo Ma to experience the effects. Talent, she says, isn’t a factor.
Kraus says that more research needs to be done to see whether receiving music instruction later in life might have the same benefits.

From now on, never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.
The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created: the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem. Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the perennial (长期的) victims and martyrs. They are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.
You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.
Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence.
If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.
In short, in all areas of your life, whether they be financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.

A Narrow Escape
Shortly after the war, my brother and I were invited to spend a few days’ holiday with an uncle who had just returned from abroad. He had rented a cottage in the country, although he hardly spent much time there. We understood the reason for this after our arrival: the cottage had no comfortable furniture in it. Many of the windows were broken and the roof leaked (漏水), making the whole house wet.
On our first evening, we sat around the fire after supper listening to the stories our uncle told of his many adventures in distant countries. I was so tired after the long train journey that I would have preferred to go to bed; but I could not bear to miss any of my uncle’s exciting stories. He was just in the middle of describing a rather terrifying experience he had once had when there was a loud crash from the bedroom above, the one where my brother and I were going to sleep.

Look at the keyboard of any standard typewriter or computer. “Q” “W” “E” “R” “T” and “Y” are the first six letters. Who decided on this arrangement of the letters And why
People tried for centuries to invent the typewriter. In 1714 in England, Henry Mill filed a patent for a machine called An Artificial Machine Or Method for the Impressing or Transcribing of Letters, Singly or Progressively one after another, as in Writing, drawing upon this way all Writing may be absorbed in Paper so Neat and Exact as not to be distinguished from Print. That machine probably didn’t sell because no one could remember its name!
The first practical typewriter was patented in the United States in 1868 by Christopher Latham Sholes. His machine was known as the type-writer. It had a movable carriage, a lever for turning paper from line to line, and a keyboard on which the letters were arranged in alphabetical order.
But Sholes had a problem. On his first model, his “ABC” key arrangement caused the keys to jam when the typist worked quickly. Sholes didn’t know how to keep the keys from sticking, so his solution was to keep the typist from typing too fast. Sholes asked his brother-in-law to rearrange the keyboard so that the commonest letters were not so close together and the type bars would come from opposite directions. Thus they would not clash together and jam the machine. The new arrangement was the QWERTY arrangement typists use today. Of course. Sholes claimed that the new arrangement was scientific and would add speed and efficiency. The only efficiency it added was to slow the typist down, since almost any word in the English language required the typist’s fingers to cover more distance on the keyboard.
The advantages of the typewriter outweighed the disadvantages of the keyboard. Typists memorized the crazy letter arrangement, and the typewriter became a huge success. By the time typists had memorized the new arrangement of letters and built their speed, typewriter technology had improved, and the keys didn’t stick as badly as they had at first.

When I set out to drop my dad of fat the airport, it was dark and dreary(沉闷的). It started to rain on the way. When I left the airport, the visibility wasn`t clear because of the drops of rain. It was before 6 am.
Even though the road conditions were poor, I drove at my normal speed. I was angry with the more cautious drivers ahead of me that were delaying my drive. The exit ramp (坡道) to the highway was a tight spiral(急盘旋). It is a dangerous spot in good weather and totally scary when the weather is miserable or it is dark. But I didn`t want to slow down and arrive home any later than necessary. I drove down the ramp too fast. The road was wet and my car slid, landing face down on the passenger side.
I didn’t like to drive by myself at the time and had debated taking my husband and son with me on the trip. Thankfully, I was alone in the car. My accident was slight. In fact, I was lucky enough not to have a single scratch. I shuddered to think the injuries my son would have suffered had he been in the backseat of that car with no seatbelt when it rolled. After the ear rolled three times, I found my mobile phone was lost in a pile of small things that were all lying in the bottom of the car. A lady was kind enough to let me borrow her mobile phone, but with-out the numbers preprogrammed who could I call I was lucky enough to remember my father`s mobile phone number, and fortunate that he hadn`t yet got on his plane.
You never know when an accident will happen. As a driver, I will keep safety in mind by obeying all traffic laws and have safe-driving habits, especially in bad weather. Insist your children always wear their seatbelts. Life is a journey and everyone should value it and enjoy the ride.

Beldon and Canfield are two seashore towns, not far apart. Both towns have many hotels, and in summer the hotels are full of holiday-makers and other tourists.
Last August there was a fire at the Seabreeze Hotel in Beldon. The next day, this news appeared on page two of the town’s newspaper. The Beldon Post:
FIRE AT SEABREEZE
Late last night firemen hurried to the Seabreeze Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom. The hotel manager said that a cigarette started the fire. We say again to all our visitors: “Please don’t smoke cigarettes in bed.” This was Beldon’s first hotel fire for five years.
The Canfield Times gave the news in these words on page one:

The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I put my bedside light on, I heard a funny noise from the lamp.” We are glad to tell our readers that this sort of adventure does not happen in Canfield.

The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome (令人惊叹的) machine ever created: the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem (自尊). Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are leaves tossed(摇摆)by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.
We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing (养育) the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks (挫折).
In short, in all areas of your life, whether they be financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.

At the age of 17 years 64 days, Mack Rutherford has become the youngest person to fly around the world alone! Mack’s journey around the world lasted five months and he flew across 52 countries in total. His record-breaking flight began in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, on 23 March, 2022. He was 16 years old when he took off and celebrated his 17th birthday by himself in his plane.
Mack faced many challenges during his adventure. Because of his small-sized aircraft, he had to land whenever the weather got too rough. However, at some points he literally couldn’t land, such as when flying non-stop for 10 hours over an ocean. At other points, he faced extremely hot weather, such as in Dubai. In Sudan, a country in Africa, Mack also faced sandstorms which made it hard for him to see where he was going. Mack battled strong winds and pouring rain during his flight, but he never stopped smiling, joking and updating his flowers on his social media account along the way, and managed to expertly pilot his plane to safety.
And if Mack’s surname “Rutherford” sounds familiar, it’s because his elder sister Zara also flew around the world earlier this year, and still holds the female version of the record! The Rutherford siblings (兄弟姐妹) were inspired by their parents to become pilots. “I have known for certain I wanted to fly since I was eleven,” Mack said, “My dad Sam is a professional ferry pilot, my mum Beatrice is a recreational (娱乐的) private pilot.”
Mack hopes to inspire young people to begin working towards their own goals, “No matter what background you have, I believe it is never too early to work towards your dreams and you shouldn’t limit yourself by others’ expectations.” With both feet firmly back on the ground now, it’s time for Mack to turn his attention towards catching up on his schoolwork!

It was the middle of winter some 30 years ago. I was a young father with three little children counting on me. I worked in a sawmill (锯木厂).
As I got ready to go to work I wrapped band aids around my fingers and put more in my pockets. Cutting and piling up wood for eight hours a day had caused my fingers to split (裂开) and bleed at their tips in the cold, dry winter air.
That day at work was harder than normal. We were short-handed on workers. The machines kept breaking down. We had to rush to catch up as the wood piled up. On top of that, all the heaters in the building had stopped working and we could see our breath as we spent hours working there.
When the work day finally ended, I walked wearily toward the washroom, took off my work gloves, and checked my aching fingers. The splits were worse than ever and I had bled through the band - aids again. I felt so tired. I wondered how long I could keep doing this, if things would ever get any better, and why life was so hard.
After driving home, I tried to put a smile on my face as I opened the front door. But instead, one appeared naturally. My daughter ran up to me, yelled “Daddy!” and wrapped her little arms around my neck. I lifted her up and my heart filled with love. My tired body didn’t feel so tired anymore. My aches and pains disappeared into her hug, And the joy in my heart chased the sadness away. At that moment I kissed my little girl’s cheek and held her tight. I knew I could continue and that things would get better.

Have you ever wanted to see your dreams after you woke up Artificial intelligence (AI) technology may help you do this in the near future!
Researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system to recreate images in people’s heads. The pictures AI has created include a teddy bear, an airplane and a clock tower. The technology is 80 percent accurate, reported Science magazine.
Previously there have been AI models that can turn a word or phrase into images. The AI has studied lots of images and their text descriptions. Over time, the AI can find patterns and recreate pictures if you first input text.
This time, the researchers took a step further. They trained the AI to link people’s brain scan data with images. They asked four people to look at 10, 000 different images, and let the AI find patterns of blood flow in the brain. Then the patterns can be related to the images.
If people looked at an airplane, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very cloudy airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text - to - image” model. By feeding the keyword “airplane”, the AI would improve the image and make it more real.
“It’s a new method that combines textual and visual information to ‘decipher the brain’”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University told Science magazine.
Researchers said the technology could someday help people with paralysis to communicate. It might also help scientists understand dreams or even how other animals see the world.

We were designing a wheelchair for a college engineering course. My classmates were certain that we needed to use steel and they felt only steel would be strong enough. I thought steel would be too heavy and aluminum would be a better option. But the student who strongly advocated steel worked at a bike shop. A few days later, when the big and heavy steel arm kept dropping down, I wished I had shown more determination to defend my position.
I enjoyed doing handiwork and my parents would come home and see artworks I had finished that day—painting, clay sculpting, sewing stuffed animals, etc. But when I studied engineering in college, these pursuits were deep-sixed. Not only was I stretched for time, but I didn’t think they were relevant to my academic work. I hesitated to highlight my female crafting (手工艺) interests in the male-dominated engineering environment where I already felt like an outsider.
When I went on to pursue a Ph.D.— early in the pandemic, I felt anxious and turned to crafting. One day I was making a set of dice as a gift for a friend. While putting the liquid resin (树脂) into the silicone mold (硅胶模具), I made a joke to my partner that I was “injection molding” — a standard engineering manufacturing process. I suddenly realized that although resin art is not injection molding in the technical sense, it shares the spirit and probably some skills.
Soon I saw connections between engineering and crafting that I had previously overlooked. When working on the wheelchair project, I used my sewing skills to create cushioned grips for the handles. I saw how crafting taught me to persevere when my product didn’t match my initial vision and to consider the failed creation a learning experience, just as an engineer must.
Since then, I’ve built crafting back into my free time. I’ve also stopped hiding it from my colleagues. I mentioned my dice-making experience at a robotics conference and explained in a team meeting how we could gain inspiration from art experiences. I was glad that the responses were positive — not rude or dismissive, as I used to fear.

When we hurt someone, we may be unwilling to acknowledge our fault and make an apology because it makes us feel guilty, conflicts with our beliefs about being a good person, or means accepting that we’re imperfect human beings. We may want to excuse our behavior and blame the other person, minimizing our role in hurting him or her.
Researchers carried out a study to find out how we can be better at apologizing. In the study, researchers asked 120 college students to recall a time when they’d hurt someone else and the conflict remained unresolved. Then, participants were randomly assigned to either a 15-minute guided mindfulness exercise focusing on their breath and having people think in the present moment or a guided mind-wandering exercise, where they were encouraged to let their minds wander.
Afterward, they were asked to report how much they felt like apologizing to the person versus not apologizing or offering excuses for their behavior. Then, they were asked to write a note to the person, without instructions to apologize or not. In analyzing the notes, the researchers found that participants who had practiced mindfulness were more likely to write statements like “I’m sorry” or “I apologize” in their notes than those who had mind-wandered.
“One way in which we can foster apologies is by having people think in the present moment,” lead author Sana Rizvi says. “We can teach individuals to be mindful of their present states, and it can be done in about 15 minutes.”
Why might this be the case Rizvi isn’t sure, as there has been very little research on how being more mindful might affect us when we hurt others. Prior research has found that being more mindful helps victims of wrong doing to be more forgiving, and it seems to improve relationships generally.
Mindfulness makes us feel less defensive and, therefore, helps us consider the importance of the other person in the conflict more. It’s encouraging that teaching simple mindfulness techniques (like focused breathing) could increase apologies, especially in places that are often filled with interpersonal conflicts, like workplaces or other occasions. It could help improve interpersonal interactions and repair relationships helping people move more easily from a place of conflict to understanding and forgiveness.
86.What does the author want to convey in Paragraph 1
A.It is difficult for us to apologize. B.It is hard to put ideas into action.
C.It is normal for us to make mistakes. D.It is useless to regret what we have done.

As COVID-19 continues to influence consumer behavior, the use of non-plastic payment methods is rising. But does this spell the end of the plastic credit card era
Since the first Diners Club credit card was unveiled in 1950, much has changed. Recent technological developments and in-store consumer preferences could suggest times are changing. For some years now, various founders of financial institutions, as well as industry experts, have foreseen plastic credit cards or any other means of physical payment methods including cash will not be around much longer. They based their predictions on the light-speed growth of digital payment.
At the beginning of the global pandemic (大流行病), governments took measures to protect their citizens, leading to lockdowns of varying degrees. The fear of contracting the virus through high-traffic ATMs and the refusal of merchants to accept cash can only be seen as a great addition to an already declared war on cash. Meanwhile, the urgency to spend a minimum time period in stores in order to avoid interactions led consumers towards digital solutions.
Furthermore, options like QR codes (二维码), NFC, and PINs have been around for a while but a true market breakthrough seems to only have happened since the beginning of the pandemic. According to Worldpay, without these telecommunication innovations, the shift in people’s payment behavior is out of the question. 86% of contactless adapters built into smart devices have seen themselves proceed with contactless payment. This trend will help to wipe out cash and plastic credit cards.
From a different perspective, countries like France, Italy, and Germany had almost 150 million smartphone users in 2019 alone. And it’s been reported that 80% of the transactions (交易) will be done via Internet-backed devices by 2025. And this figure will keep rising as more and more cheap smartphones are pouring into the global market. It is expected that e-wallets are going to be the most preferred payment method by then.
So, will there be a comeback for our beloved plastic spending power I would put away my cash and plastic cards, switch on my phone instead of inserting cards, and present QR codes at a self-checkout instead of queuing behind a mass of people. I believe that many people think the same way.
91.What are the predictions in the financial circle about
A.The Diners Club credit card will make a comeback.
B.Consumers’ preferences will be varied around the world.
C.The era of traditional payment will come to an end soon.

A.The fast update rate of smart devices.
B.The existing digital payment technologies.
C.Many physical stores’ excellent online service.
D.The acceptance of digital payment among customers.
94.What can be inferred from Paragraph 5
A.E-wallets will achieve increasing global popularity.
