When I was young, my father was quiet and seldom talked to me, so we were not so close. The times I loved most were the special moments we had together. To this day, I still hold those memories dear. When I had a son, I was always worried that my absence might have an impact on his future life and that I might miss all his milestones since I travelled a lot. I knew how important it was for a boy to have his father near. I decided that if I couldn’t be with my son as often as possible, I would make every effort to create special moments for us.
When my son was five, I was sent to the branch in Shanghai, which meant I had to be away from my family for nearly a year. The hardest time for me was the summer and winter vocations when my son was out of school and families could get together doing something fun. To ease the separation, we kept writing letters to share any precious moments in our life. In one letter home, I promised my son that we would make a lantern together and sign up for the community lantern design competition on the Lantern Festival.
Everywhere I went on business, I would pick up things for our lantern adventure and send them to him. I bought a couple of handbooks on how to DIY a lantern, and I sent those on. I found special bamboo for the frame. I sent him one piece at a time, carefully packed. When I was in Hangzhou, I found the most beautiful silk with gold threads woven through it. Perfect lantern material. I sent it home. I found a golden Chinese knot that could be attached to the bottom of the lantern. I sent that home, along with some auspicious cloud(祥云) paper-cuttings that would serve as splendid decorations. Then I was on my way home.

The early April wind was colder than I expected as I walked anxiously toward the Holiday Inn at Union Square in San Francisco. With every step I took, I heard my mother’s words, “Johnny, I am all packed and looking forward to seeing you!”
After five years of trying to get a visa to the United States to visit me, she finally succeeded on the third attempt. The long and boring process, while at times heartbreaking, could not prevent my mom from her desire to make the trip. Despite being only five feet, three inches tall, Mom had always been the pillar (支柱) of our family. Her solution to the visa challenge proved once again that no barrier was a match for Mom’s strong determination and love for her family — in this case, me!
Although excited, I was extremely nervous. Mom and I had not seen each other in more than eight years, since I left Malaysia at eighteen to attend college in the U.S. Due to a fault, my application for permanent residency was put on hold. In spite of being gainfully employed and a homeowner, I could not leave the country until my paperwork was resolved.
In the beginning, our only source of communication was through letters. Later, it became lengthy phone conversations. Much had happened during the eight years while I was absent.
During the months before her U.S. trip, I tried to help my mom prepare what she needed to pack. I planned for her to stay with me for four months, during which time we would be traveling throughout the United States. Her reply was always, “Don’t worry about me. I know what I need. How about you What would you like me to bring you from Malaysia ” My answer never changed. All I wanted was a couple of bags of authentic curry and chili (辣椒) powder from our hometown of Melaka, as I was running low on these treasured spices.

That year, my father worked abroad — and couldn’t come back for Christmas. My mother, sister and I had to make our own Christmas decorations.
My mother and I dragged in the final section of our seven-foot artificial Christmas tree from the garage. Before setting the tree in its stand, we moved our sofa over so we would have the room needed for our large tree to fit in the living room. In a moment, we would form the branches that would hold our decorations.
Everything was going smoothly, and my sister announced the stand was ready. Mother and I lifted the bottom section of the tree and were about to place it into the stand when I heard a scream. It was so loud that I assumed someone had broken into our home.
“A mouse! A mouse!” screamed my sister. She screamed just as loud, and jumped up on the sofa as the baby mouse ran to one side of our living room and then the other. Because of the loud screams, the mouse was frightened. The little creature had obviously found a home in our Christmas tree. Once we brought the tree inside and opened the branches, the baby mouse fell out of its temporary home and ran across our living room.
“Get the mouse!” my sister screamed.
It was so tiny and quick that I wasn’t sure what to do. I tried grabbing its long gray tail, but it slipped away. Then I ran to our bedroom and came back with an empty shoebox and a fly swatter (蝇拍). My plan was to stun (打晕) the little mouse and put it in the box.
I was about to hit it with the swatter when my sister shouted out, “Don’t kill it! It’s a baby and kind of cute.” My mother agreed with her, and I could tell by its frightened eyes that the little mouse did, too.

Many years ago, in one of the Arabian tribes (部落), there was a man named Nabor who owned a beautiful horse. This horse was famous for being both fast and gentle. Now, an Arab named Jehu, who belonged to another tribe wanted this horse. Jehu had offered his camels and many valuable treasures for the horse but the owner would not sell it. Jehu then thought up a trick by which he hoped to get the horse for himself.
He decided to dress in rags, dirty his face and blindfold himself. Thus, he lay by the roadside to wait for the owner of the horse, who he knew would pass by that way. When he saw Nabor coming on his beautiful horse, he cried out in a weak voice, “I am a poor and sick blind man. For three days and nights I have been unable to move from this spot to find food. I am dying; help me please.”
Nabor kindly offered to take him on his horse and carry him home, but Jehu replied, “I cannot stand; I have no strength left.” Nabor felt pity for him and got off his horse. He led his horse to the man and, with great difficulty, helped him onto the horse’s back. But, once Jehu was sitting in the saddle (鞍), he kicked the horse and galloped off, calling out as he did so, “I have the horse, and you will never see it again. Goodbye!” Nabor was, at first, surprised and sad but he soon ran after the thief, shouting to him to stop as he had something to say to him.

On Nov.18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, came to give a concert on stage at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City.
If you have ever been to a Perlman concert, you know that getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was stricken with polio(小儿麻痹) as a child, and so he has braces on both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches. To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully and slowly, is an awesome sight. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his crutches on the floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor and proceeds to play.
By now, the audience is used to this practice. They remain silent while he undoes the clasps on his legs. They wait until he is ready to play.
But this time, something went wrong. Just as he finished the first few bars, one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear it snap - it went off like gunfire across the room.
I here was no mistaking what that sound meant.
People who were there that night thought to themselves: “We figured that he would have to get up, put on the clasps again, pick up the crutches and limp his way off stage -to either find another violin or else find another string for this one.”
But he didn’t. Instead, he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin again. The orchestra began, and he played from where he had left off. And he played with such passion and such power and such purity as they had never heard before.
Anyone knows it is impossible to play a symphonic work with just three strings. But that night, he was seen modulating, changing, and recomposing the piece in his head. He was detuning the strings to get new sounds they had never made before.

It was a rather crowded day at the subway station. Seeing the busy passers-by stopped by his performance, Eric, a music lover who just graduated from college, wore a big smile on his face. With deep passion for music, he showed up in the station in his spare time, singing and playing the guitar to people travelling to and from the subway station.
With the melodious (悦耳的) song coming to an end, hearty applause burst out. As usual, Eric expressed his gratitude, nodding his head with a smile. “Man, awesome! An outstanding performance!” Approached a man, holding the hand of a little girl in a ponytail (马尾辫), aged about four.
“Park, a producer of a record company.” The man introduced himself, holding out his hand. “Would you like to give it a try in my company ” Out of politeness, Eric shook hands with him in amazement.
“I haven’t seen somebody this good in a long time! You are a beautiful scenery of this city, with such a beautiful voice!” Park admired. Suddenly, a phone call interrupted their conversation. Park briefly invited Eric to meet later in the same place and walked away to answer the call. Seeing Park off, Eric did realize what had happened, with warm current flowing from his head to toes. It was the first time that he had earned such kind of recognition, which was totally out of his expectation.
“A beautiful scenery of the city, with a beautiful voice!” Eric repeated the words, cleaning his guitar and preparing for the next performance. At that time, he caught sight of a little girl in a ponytail standing in a corner, weeping and looking around. My wife and I never had a green thumb when it came to keeping plants alive far more than a few weeks. So, when I was diagnosed with cancer we didn’t even think about adding a plant to our small apartment. But one day, my friend stopped by and gave us a beautiful plant as a gift, insisting that it would bring life to our home and a sense of calmness during this difficult time.
Surprisingly, the plant took off and grew beautifully, and it brought a sense of joy to our home that we desperately needed. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless.
I am a physician, and taking care of the plant made me feel like a caregiver once again. It was nice to be able to nurture something and watch it grow. Since my diagnosis in August 2018, far too often, it seemed, I had to rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling aimless and unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity. Plants and people could still depend on me.
For the next few months, I was recovering from surgery and receiving radiation. Despite my ongoing treatments, we found some peace through tending to the plant. The simple act of watering and watching it grow gave us something to focus 4 outside of my health. It became a small but meaningful part of our lives.
Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness.

I feared going into my room after school. Every day it was something different. The hours away at school were long enough to cause a terrible change to my private room. Today can be no different.
As I entered the house, Mom greeted me with a smile. It seemed like nothing was wrong. Still, I wouldn’t believe. Yesterday, I discovered a chocolate cookie spread around the mouth of my angel statue. Its pink lips were covered in chocolate. Obviously, Callie had shared her cookie with my angel.
I looked around for my little sister, Callie, who had just turned three. I didn’t see her. As I checked the sitting room, I noticed it was pretty messy. There were toys all around. There were a few headless dolls, some blocks, the remains of a grape stuck into the carpet. I searched around and there she was, sitting on the sofa with the TV remote in her sticky hands. She looked up and saw me. A huge smile broke out on her face, and she laughed, clapping her hands. I was surprised that they didn’t stick together.
“Sissy (sister)!” She jumped off the sofa and ran to me, hugging my knees and almost tipping me over. “Hi, Callie,” I said, with the slightest smile. I ruffled (抚弄) her long thick hair, and some white crumbs (残渣) fell to the carpet. “Cheese, sissy”, Callie said, pointing at the crumbs that had settled onto the carpet. I found a strong smell of cheese from them. Had Callie focused on destroying only the sitting room A voice raced across my mind. No way. Not my sister, the destroyer. Not my sister, the three-year-old terror. I turned around and started the scared climb to my room.

Last August, Joe and Mary Mahoney began looking at colleges for their 17-year-old daughter, Maureen. With a checklist of criteria in hand, the Dallas family looked around the country visiting half a dozen schools. They sought a university that offered the teenager’s intended major, one located near a large city, and a campus where their daughter would be safe.
“The safety issue is a big one,” says Joe Mahoney, who quickly discovered he wasn’t alone in his worries. On campus tours other parents voiced similar concerns, and the same question was always asked: what about crime But when college officials always gave the same answer- “That’s not a problem here,” --Mahoney began to feel uneasy.
“No crime whatsoever ” comments Mahoney today. “I just don’t buy it. ” Nor should he: in 1999 the U.S. Department of education had reports of nearly 400,000 serious crimes on or around our campuses. “Parents need to understand that times have changed since they went to college,” says David Nichols, author of Creating a Safe Campus. “Campus crime mirrors the rest of the nation."
But getting accurate information isn’t easy. Colleges must report crime statistics by law, but some hold back for fear of bad publicity, leaving the honest ones looking dangerous. “The truth may not always be serious,” warms S. Daniel Carter of Security on Campus, Inc., the nation’s leading campus safety watchdog group.
To help concerned parents,

My dad,George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man,he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14,he worked. And his dad,Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either:He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass(超过)anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball,or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather,I read about sports or practiced my trombone(长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired I up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way,the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs,lamb’s-quarters,foxtails,and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home,my dad said,“A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household. ” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

5. When he finished, there was an awesome silence in the room. And then people rose and cheered. There was an extraordinary outburst of applause from every corner of the auditorium. We were all on our feet, screaming and cheering, doing everything we could to show how much we appreciated what he had done with just three strings on the stage. We were all astonished by his exquisite skills and brilliant performances.
He has prepared all his life to make music on a violin of four stings. All of a sudden, in the middle of a concert he found himself with only three strings; so he made music with three strings. The music he made that night with just three strings was more beautiful, more sacred, more memorable, than any that he had ever made before, when he had four strings. Perhaps our task in this fast changing world is to make music, at first with all that we have, and then, when that is no longer possible, to make music with what we have left.

7.Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness. I increased my plant watering, and then decreased it. Still, the leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. I grew more and more frustrated and uneasy. The thought that I couldn’t even care for a simple plant started to haunt me like a shadow. For the past few months, a bond had been built between me and the plant. I couldn’t shake the feeling that if the plant died, I might too. Having seen through my heart and sensed my fear, my wife comforted me, “Honey, your treatment is working well and maybe the plant just needs its.” Her words did make sense and settled my nerves.
As I became less anxious, I began to search online for how to care for my plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the tree to a larger pot, giving its roots more room to grow and buried some solid plant nutrient under the top layer of the earth. Soon, we both began to thrive again. Whenever I look at the tree with its shinny and lush leaves in its new pot, I make it a point to appreciate my wife and the other people who have cared for and supported me. If the plant outlives me, I hope it will inspire my wife to live her life to the fullest.

8.I pushed the door open and saw a complete mess again! My bed and desk were fully covered by white crumbs, and the walls were full of grape juice graffiti. What’s worse, I discovered cheese spread around the mouth of my angel statue whose pink lips were covered in cheese. I was completely shocked. Filled with anger, I was unable to utter a single word. So angry was I that I shook my fist at her. The moment she saw my reaction, she froze with fright, as if rooted on the ground. All of a sudden, she bursted into tears.
Seeing the tears in her eyes, I bent down and lifted her up gently. “It’s OK. Callie, no matter what you do, I will love you forever. You are such a good girl, for it is you creative imaginations that give me surprises everyday. Thank you!” I kissed her on her face, ruffling her long thick hair. On hearing that, her eyes widened with excitement and her mouth opened. “Sissy (sister)! I love you too.” She said heartily, and the smile on her face shone like a diamond.

9.To help concerned parents, Carter promised to visit campuses and talk to experts around the country to find out major crime issues and effective solutions. It’s important to have a clear set of criteria in mind. As Joe Mahoney noted, parents should also make sure to voice their concerns about campus safety and ask for specific information from college officials. It’s also worth acknowledging that campus crime mirrors the rest of the nation. Unfortunately, crime is a reality in many parts of our society, and college campuses are no exception. Finally, it’s important to recognize that some colleges may hold back crime statistics for fear of bad publicity. This is a concerning trend that undermines the safety of both current and prospective students. As such, parents and students should support organizations like Security on Campus, Inc. that advocate for transparency and improved safety measures.

Paragraph 1:
I figured that I must take actions to change that. So I went up to my dad,and asked him why I should turn in what I had earned to meet the family’s needs rather than spend it on my own will. After a few seconds of silence,he told me,“I worked to help my family when I was young, but I never asked why. I just thought that it was my responsibility to make a better life for the ones I loved, and what mattered most was that I felt proud to contribute to my family with my labor. ”
Paragraph 2:
After hearing what he had said,I felt embarrassed. All I had thought about was spending the money for my own good, and it seemed that I had never repaid my family for what they had done for me,but focused on my own pleasure. It was at that time that I realized what I should do next. I called on the farmer and told him that I would continue to work for him.
