One day, Reuben, a 12-year-old boy, saw something in a shop window that set his heart racing. The price—five dollars—was beyond his means, but he went in the shop anyway.
Poorly dressed, he went up and told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “I don't have the money right now. Will you please hold it for me for some time ”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “Folks around here don't usually have money to spend on such things. It should keep for a while.”
Reuben decided to raise the five dollars by himself. Walking along a side street, he had an idea. People built their own houses in his town, using nails purchased in Hessian sacks (粗麻袋)from a local factory. The sacks were sometimes thrown away. Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
Every day after school, Reuben went around the town, collecting nail sacks. The school closed for the summer, and he was still wandering in the town, searching for his treasures. Often he was tired and hungry, but the thought of the object in the shop window kept him going. Sometimes his mother Dora would ask: “Reuben, where were you We were waiting for you to have dinner.”
“Playing, Mum. Sorry.”
Dora would look at him in his face and shake her head. Boys!
One day in spring, he counted his coins and found he needed twenty cents more. He had to find four sacks and sell them before the day ended. Late in the afternoon, just before the buyer was about to close up, Reuben arrived and sold the four sacks. With the coins in his hand, he murmured a thank you and ran away.

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My baby Reese started screaming and I struggled to hold him in my arms as we pushed our way through the crowd to the side of the taekwondo (跆拳道) studio, where I would send my boy for the training.
I looked up, and that is when I saw the photo on a poster, a woman with a bright white smile surrounded by her daughters. “OUR MOM NEEDS A KIDNEY (肾脏),” it said above the photo. “My name is Vonchelle Knight, and I have polycystic kidney disease,” it said below. “I am a single mother of two girls and have been on the transplant waitlist for eight years.”
As I continued to read, I thought about how desperately this momma needed a kidney. And then the idea struck me. I wanted to donate my kidney to the woman whom I had never met.
On the drive home, I told my husband I wanted to donate my kidney to a stranger. By the look on his face, he clearly thought I had lost my mind. I was a busy mom of two boys working a full-time job as a sales account manager. I had a calendar filled with sporting events, group fitness and volunteer church hours.
“Where is this coming from ” he asked. I was excited and slightly terrified as I explained the poster. I told him I wanted to at least call Vonchelle’s nurse and get more information.
Several weeks later, the results were in. We were a perfect match! The nervous excitement filled my body. Thoughts swirled in my head as I realized I had the ability to give this momma a new lease on life. Vonchelle had already waited eight years and obviously didn’t have any family members who could donate.
I told my husband that the doctor could do the transplant on January twenty-fifth. His eyes filled with tears as he stared at me and nodded. Vonchelle’s daughter worked at my son’s taekwondo studio, so I shared the news with her.
One day before the donation, the doctors scheduled me to meet Vonchelle.

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My father, Michael, led me through the little wooden house he’d filled with his paintings. “When I have an exhibition ...” he began, pointing to the artworks he’d created, before stopping. “Poor Pa,” I thought. In 1994 he got Parkinson’s Disease (帕金森氏病), which had shocked the whole family as he was only in his forties.
A husband and father to three, Pa had had a successful career running an advertising agency and had always been extremely creative. Outside of work, he’d spent 15 years fronting the cover band, Musical Chairs, which performed at the pub in Sydney’s Double Bay each week and, when I became a mother, he developed a very close bond with my daughter.
Even when his Parkinson’s advanced, my father decided he wanted to paint. “Why don’t you try classes ”my mum Louisa suggested to him. He agreed. In art lessons, the class practised painting still life objects, like pears, but my father had other ideas for his inspiration. He began producing abstract pieces, inspired by his favourite artist, Jackson Pollock, a leading abstract expressionist. “Why abstract ” I asked him. “Because,” he replied,“it helps us to see the world around us in a different way. You can look at these paintings and ask ‘what if ’”
Soon, I realized he was right. When I observed my father’s work, I could interpret each of them in many ways. Once he got started, he showed no signs of slowing down. The little house was quickly filled with more and more works.
But in 2019, Pa developed cancer and was given just three months to live. The thought of losing him was too much for any of my family to accept, but we soon received great news that a new form of treatment can help him greatly. Since he continued speaking about wanting to share his paintings with the world, I knew what had to be done.

2023届山东省潍坊市高三下学期二模英语试题
【答案】One possible version:
“Why not do a search on the Internet ” suggested Jack. We acted quickly and surfed the Internet to figure out the relevant information about the bird, such as its species and habits. Following the given advice, we put some cotton at the bottom of the box to keep it warm and placed it near the fireplace. In order to recover its energy, we gave it some food and water. The bird looked a bit more comfortable, and soon it fell asleep. Having ensured the bird was in good condition, we felt relieved.
The next day, we were glad to see the bird was well enough. It was singing and bouncing around in the rescue box. Obviously, it had regained its energy! Realizing it was fully ready for freedom, we took the box outside, placed the bird in my palm and petted it softly with mixed feelings. I held the bird up and let it go. The bird was circling above us as if to express gratitude. Jack and I looked at each other with a broad smile, feeling that we were qualified volunteer wildlife rescuers now.

47.One possible version
As she walked through the door of the meeting room, I walked up to her, my heart beating wildly. Her bright white smile was infectious, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration at the woman before me. Here was the person who had been waiting eight long years for a kidney, and now because of my decision to donate, she had a chance at a new life. We hugged tightly, tears streaming down both our faces as we exchanged words of gratitude and hope. In that moment, I knew I had made the right decision, and that the bond between us would be unbreakable.
After the successful transplant, Vonchelle was recovering well. I visited her in the hospital, watching as she slowly regained her strength and vitality. Her daughters were by her side, holding her hand and smiling through their tears. As I looked at them, I felt a sense of fulfillment that I had never experienced before. In giving Vonchelle the gift of life, I had also given myself a gift — the knowledge that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope, always a chance for something beautiful to emerge. And as I left the hospital that day, I knew that the experience would stay with me forever, a reminder of the power of human connection and the beauty of selfless giving.
