I had just a very wonderful day. Although all my days were always wonderful to me, that day was completely different. There was a bulletin(公告)board saying that they would need to find volleyball players for the girls and I was so happy! I have been loving playing volleyball since my mother taught me how to play. I was so excited that I couldn’t wait to play! Then I read more what was on that bulletin board, which said that here would be an audition(试演)after three weeks! “Three weeks ” I thought about it I did know how to play volleyball but I was not much of an expert in doing it but I still wanted to try.
After that I was determined to practice volleyball every day. I practiced hard again and again each day and never got tired of doing the same practice through all the days, and finally, the day came. I was so prepared for this and hurried to the gym to the audition. When I had reached the gym, I was surprised to see that 12 or 14 girls were lining up and I guessed I was the last one to arrive. Then our audition began. Some of the girls failed to pass the audition and some passed.
There was only one position left to complete the 6 girls to join the volleyball team and suddenly I felt nervous because the person in front of me was going to take the serve(发球). Then the girl hit the ball and then the ball didn’t pass over the net! The girl hit her forehead and left, leaving me standing in the middle of the court.
Then the coach spoke, “Okay, you serve.” She handed me the ball and I caught it with my hands. As the ball was in my hands, my hands were suddenly sweating and so was I!

I never had the privilege of meeting my grandmother on my mother’s side. So how is it possible that a memory of her lingers(继续存留) in my mind Maybe it’s the constant mention of her name or the pictures I’ve seen. Or maybe it’s the sweet dessert, Annie Belle’s Famous Pound Cake, that created a bridge connecting me to my grandmother.
I remember waking up to my mother baking her mother’s famous pound cake. The pleasant smell of buttery would fill the house. I would pop up as if my alarm had gone off and make my way down the stairs and into the kitchen where all the magic was happening. My mother would pop the beaters out of the mixer and hand one to me coated with the perfect amount of the batter(面糊). Immediately my heart was full as I licked the beater clean with no trace of batter remaining.
This pound cake had an extraordinary reputation and orders began rushing in. My mother would make hundreds of cakes and I was always there, waiting for my favorite and most important job. Each time I felt a closeness, like the arms of a grandmother bringing you in close and holding you until you lost track of time.
My mother didn’t keep this recipe a secret and although others tried to imitate this work of art, they always found that something was missing. Nobody could make it exactly how my mother and grandmother could. Every step and each ingredient was listed in a church cookbook, but the outcome was perfect only when my mother was in the kitchen. I wondered if this had anything to do with the special pan my grandmother used and passed down to my mother—or was it deeper than that
I knew one day I would have to attempt to bake this famous pound cake. But what if I failed What if, like all the others who tried, I didn’t have what it takes to successfully make this family recipe If you fail, who cares Just keep trying. If it doesn’t come out perfect, it’s still a cake!

Amy was very excited. She was going to a big birthday party on Saturday night. There would be music, dancing, food and lots of new people to meet. Amy knew she would have a great time, but what was she going to wear All her friends at school were talking about it. Imogen and Chloe had new dresses. Sally had expensive new jeans...
Amy requested her mother to buy her something new but was refused. Amy felt frustrated, so she turned to her granny. Then, on Saturday, her granny took her to the shopping mall.
They went into the first store and began to look at the clothes. Granny pulled out dresses, tops and jeans. Amy chose six things and went to the fitting room to try them on. When she came out, Granny was waiting. She asked, “Anything nice ”
Amy shook her head. “No. The dress was quite nice, but it wasn’t really special. I want something special, Granny.”
“I know you do, my love. It’s a special party! Don’t worry — this is just the first shop. There are plenty of e on!”
Amy found nothing on Floor 1. So they took the elevator up to Floor 2 and began again. In every shop, Amy tried on clothes while Granny was very patient and she never got cross.
“Take your time, love,” she said. “I want you to be happy.”
They took the elevator to Floor 3 and granny squeezed Amy’s hand. “You will find something,” she said. “There are five floors in this mall. We will keep going until we find your special thing.” Saying nothing, Amy hung her head, exhausted. But Granny kept looking and never stopped smiling.
They searched all the shops on Floor 3 then went up to Floor 4. But there, her heart suddenly felt very heavy. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she began to cry. “I’m never going to find it, Granny,” said Amy. “I want so much to find something special, but nothing is right and I’m so tired. I just want to go home, but I can’t go home with nothing.”

School volunteers don’t get paid money, but sometimes we receive special gifts. One morning, just before Christmas vacation,l was selling tickets to our grade school’s lastevening performance of The Nutcracker.
One of my customers that day was a parent. “I think it’s a wful that I have to pay to see my own child perform,”she announced, yanking(猛扯)a wallet from her purse.
“The school asks for a voluntary donation to help pay for scenery and costumes,”lexplained,“but no one has to pay. You’re welcome to all the tickets you need. ”
“Oh,I’ll pay,”she said unhappily. “Two adults and a child. ”She plunked down(猛地放下) a ten-dollar bill. 1 gave her the change and her tickets. She stepped aside, holding her purse. That’s when the boy waiting behind her emptied a pocketful of change onto the table.
“How many tickets ”l asked.
“I don’t need tickets,”he said. “I’m paying. ”He pushed the coins across the table. “But you’ll need tickets to see the show tonight. ”
He shook his head. “I’ve already seen the show. ”
l pushed the pile of nickels, dimes, and quarters back. “You don’t have to pay to sce theshow with your class,”l told him. “That’s free. ”
“No,”the boy insisted. “I saw it last night. My brother and l arrived late. We couldn’t find anyone to buy tickets from,so we just walked in. ”
Lots of people in that crowd had probably “just walked in”. The few volunteers present couldn’t check everyone for a ticket. Anyway,it ‘s OK. As I’d told the parent ahead of this boy ,the donation was voluntary.
He pushed his money back to me. “I’m paying now,for last night,”he said, l knew this boy and his brother must have squeezed into the back of that crowd. And being late to the hall, they couldn’t possibly have seen the whole show. l hated to take his money. A pile of coins in a kid’s hand is usually carefully saved allowance money.

The Ex-footballer
My parents don’t see football as a profession. They think I should be an engineer, a doctor or an economist. It took me a good while to eventually persuade them to buy me a new football shirt for the school matches. My old shirt had worn out and made me depressed every time I put it on. But now I had a brand new shirt! I decided to wear it today for the first time during a kick-about in our street. But as soon as we had been playing for ten minutes, the shirt sleeve (袖子) was torn when I made a turn.
I didn’t pay much attention to it at first. I thought I would sew it back together after the match. But then I noticed that the whole sleeve was torn. Only a professional could mend it now. I couldn’t tell my mum and dad that my new football shirt was ruined. I needed a tailor. As I walked home, feeling totally at a loss what to do, I was surprised to suddenly come across a shop sign—“All kinds of repairs and services!”
I went inside immediately. Looking around the shop, I saw an iron (熨斗), broken toys and a broken chair. I guessed this was the wrong place and stood there, mind blank. At that time, a man with white hair came over warmly, “Welcome! Anything needs repairing ”
I showed him the shirt and expressed my request with great care, putting my fingers through the tear in the sleeve. To my disappointment, he told me that since he opened this shop, he had repaired many things except a football shirt. But he admitted he had been waiting so long to repair a football shirt.
What he said made me hesitate. Should I count on such a green hand I was worried he would make it worse. After all, it was new, and my parents wouldn’t buy me a new one.

My friend Avery and I tried out for Alice in Wonderland.
“I really hope I get picked to be Alice,” said Avery.
“You’d make a great Alice!” I said. “I don’t care what part I get as long as I’m in it.”
“So you’d be happy to have a small part like the Dormouse ” she asked.
“Exactly!” I said. “Or even the Cheshire Cat would be good.”
A few days later, Avery and I raced over to the theater office, where the director had posted the cast list(演员表).
“Wow!” said Avery. “You got the part of Alice and I got the part of the March Hare.”
“That can’t be right,” I said. “There must be some mistakes!”
But I really and truly was given the part of Alice. I’m pretty sure the reason I’d done well is because I hadn’t been nervous at all during the audition(试镜). And the reason why I hadn’t been nervous is that I hadn’t even thought that I could get the major role.
“Do you want to come over after school and we can practise our lines ” I asked “You mean practise your lines ”Avery said, not even looking at me. “No thanks. I’m pretty busy this week.”
“OK,” I said. “How about some day next week ”
“Sorry,” she said in a low voice. “I’m pretty sure I’m busy forever.” I was frozen in her words and wondered,“Shouldn’t friends admire each other rather than envy(嫉妒)each other ”

Adler lived with his unemployed mother and a younger brother in a small house in Durango. Like other boys at his age, the small, golden-haired boy wanted to play with his friends and have fun, but fate had other plans. After observing what was happening in his house, the boy decided to do something for his family. He picked up his only toy, a ball, and left his house with a mission—to help his family.
Little Adler walked to the nearest store with his last toy in hand, hoping he could sell it. His innocent mind could only come up with this idea to help his mother, unaware that no one would buy the ball from him. While the little boy was selling his toy at the street, a man with the TikTok name Ruben Cervantes spotted him. Curious, he approached Adler to see what happened to that little boy.
With tears in his eyes, the little one said, “I just want to sell my only toy, sir. Would you like it ” When Cervantes learned Adler was selling his toy to help his family, he asked, “How much is it ” Adler replied, “I don’t want money, sir. just want milk and bread for my family.”
At that moment, Cervantes was so moved how this little mind could possess such mature concepts. While other children at his age were enjoying and living a carefree life, Adler was worrying about his home’s financial situation. Without hesitation, Cervantes took the ball from the boy, gave him a hug and said, “Don’t cry, my boy. I’ll keep your ball for now, hoping to play it with you one day.”
Cervantes did buy milk and bread in exchange for his ball and sent him back home. The boy flashed a toothy smile and said, “Thank you so much, sir. I’m looking forward.”

My world was in a constant state of change and I was having trouble keeping up. Life with Mom, Dad, and my sister, Linda, had always been comfortable and fairly predictable. My grades were good, and Linda and I got on well. We played together and fought together, the way sisters do. As the older one, I was used to being told to set an example, which wasn’t too difficult, since Linda was only two years younger, and she usually wanted to do anything I did, anyway. Life was pretty good.
Then the changes started coming.
First came a family meeting with surprising news that would change my world. We were moving. Our new home would be across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, in another borough of New York City. We were leaving the only home I had ever known. Even worse, it would occur right before the beginning of sixth grade. Not only would I not be able to graduate from elementary school with my friends, but I would have to start middle school with a class full of kids who had known each other, and bonded, since kindergarten. Where would that leave me
I spent the summer adjusting to a new neighborhood, literally being the new kid on the block. Making friends didn’t come easily to me, and it didn’t help being the eldest child of immigrant parents. I was different, and being different is the last thing any middle school student wants. The fear of starting a new school hung over me like a black cloud, damaging each summer day.
The first day of school arrived too quickly. I entered my new classroom trying very hard not to appear as scared as I felt, but it wasn’t easy. Twenty-eight faces turned to look up at me as I followed the Assistant Principal into the room. They all looked so cool, and some of the girls even wore make-up. How would I ever fit in I was out of touch in every way possible. I wasn’t allowed to wear make-up or nail polish. Most of my clothes were handmade, sewn by my mother and grandmother.

I could hear footsteps following me. Closer and closer the sound of heavy footsteps sounded, which made my heart beat faster than ever. I stopped and turned to see who it was. The dim street lamp did not allow me to see far and it looked like I was alone. I could not hear anything other than my heart beating heavily. Was it my imagination
I was returning home after a late music lesson. My parents were attending a neighborhood watch meeting so I had to get home on my own. The distance from my music teacher’s house to my home was just 500 meters. The street was darker than I had expected but I was not very worried about the short walk home. I was busy thinking about my upcoming music exam when I became aware that I was being followed.
I continued on my way, keeping my ears open for any sound. There it was again, the sound of someone walking behind me. Fear enveloped me and I hurried on. My house was just around the corner. I decided to run.To my horror, whoever was following me began to run too. I glanced behind me and saw a dark figure catching up with me. The next instant, I ran into a dustbin by the road and fell flat on my front. I felt a hand grab my arm and I screamed in panic. The hand released my arm and I pushed myself off the ground, getting ready to run again. I found myself looking at a terrified young lady dressed in a dark tracksuit.
The next moment, there was a rush of footsteps and someone calling my name. To my astonishment, my parents appeared together with a few people I recognized as our neighbors.

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it.
The dog was about twelve weeks old. It had no collar (项圈) or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about posting an advertisement but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely.
By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart beat with fear for what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. The owner sounded extremely eager. My hand shook, and I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the paper.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.
By then we had named the dog. It was Kevin, so we called it Kevin. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did the housework, it was there to lend a hand.
There was only one problem with this seemingly perfect picture: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I wondered in my heart whether I had to call that number in the paper and see if our Kevin was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing for me to do.

1.I then suddenly became nervous about this. “Maybe I should back off,” I told myself. And my legs began to shake. My mind went blank. For a moment I wanted to give up, but then it occurred to me that all of these practices that I’d done were all for the audition and I don’t want to be disappointed. Suddenly confidence returned to me. I practiced this for today; I was determined to do this, so I had to do this with all my fighting spirit! I had the ability to pass the audition. Then I stared at the volleyball in my hands and was ready to throw it out.
I come to a stop, taking a deep breath and began. I only glanced at the net, swung my hand and hit the ball and it... and it... and it... Yes! And it passed over the net! My coach stood up clapping her hands. All the people in the gym cheered. I felt very proud and jumped with joy. At that moment I knew my practice for three weeks did pay off. And from it I know if you have devoted yourself to something, you will get the reward.

As she smiled and watched me do what she did for so many years, I couldn’t help but picture that bridge again.

He put his hand on mine.” I know the difference. For a moment our hands bridged the money. Then I spoke, “Two tickets cost two dollars. The pile of coins added up to the correct amount. Thank you,” I said. The boy smiled, turned away and was gone.
Our conversation somewhat affected the woman who had complained about buying tickets. “Excuse me,” I looked up, surprised to see the woman who had bought her own tickets moments earlier. She was still there, purse open, change and tickets in hand. “Why don’t you keep this change,” she said quietly. “The scenery is beautiful, and those costumes couldn’t have been cheap.” She handed me a few dollar bills, and left. On the way home, she was walking behind me when she heard footsteps following her and she decided to run when she saw me run. It tuned out that what she had heard was the neighborhood watch group patrolling the street. When I fell, she went to help me up, which unfortunately led to my screaming out in fear.
The young lady who looked anxious at first now seemed as relieved as me. We then walked to our house which was just two doors away. As my mother put medicine on the cuts on my arms and legs, I was secretly filled with warm and happiness. The night ended with us having supper together. I said that my daughters loved it very much and meanwhile apologized for not having contacted her a few days before. 30 minutes later, the bell rang and Kevin was barking. I opened the door, forcing myself to face the case.
The woman said, “Where is my dog I would like to have a look at it.” I asked the woman to come in and she quickly bent over and hugged Kevin tightly. Kevin started wagging its tail and barking excitedly as if it had recognized someone familiar. Surprised and excited, the woman told me that she couldn’t sleep well without it and thanked us for keeping her dog for these days. She offered to give me some cash as a reward, but I refused. After she took Kevin away, I cracked a smile. I knew I had done the right thing—that puppy should return to its original owner.
