Too Far Away from It All
A TV series in England, Away from It All, has surprised everyone by becoming a huge success with young people.
Its success is surprising because its main character is a shepherd (牧羊人), and the series is about the relaxing lifestyles of people who live in the country. There is none of the action that we usually see on TV. There are also no stressful moments, busy offices, or crowded cities. Away From It All is set in the peaceful English countryside and tells simple stories of people’s kindness
The director of the series says its success is a sign of teenagers suffering from stress. He says that watching Away from It All helps teenagers forget about the pressures of exams and homework, and the troubles that fill the world. He also claims that it’s a good sign that today’s youth are switching to happier TV series, as it shows they would like a happier and healthier life.
Although the series’ success might have a good side, many teachers and parents are worried. They say that some of their students and children are becoming couch potatoes (电视迷) and are using Away from It All as an excuse for not completing homework. Some students have even refused to study for exams because they say that they can only achieve happiness by avoiding stressful situations completely.
One mother, Lucy Linney, said of her son Patrick, “Before he started watching Away from it All, he loved challenges and volunteered every afternoon. But now he has become a couch potato. His grades have dropped and he no longer volunteers. He says it doesn’t matter as he just wants to ‘get away from it all’.”
And what do the experts say Paula Ray, a doctor, says that TV can influence young people’s lifestyles. But she says that if a young person reacts as strongly as Patrick, it’s likely that there are other reasons for his change in the behaviour.

One morning in 2007, Parthasarathy—we usually called him Partha—came to meet me. He was disabled and was not an engineer but had majored in a computer course in college. I told Partha, “I’d like to employ people like you.” In fact, it turned out to be the right decision to employ him. Partha had an amazing enthusiasm and his disability did not stop him from improving himself. I was not doing any charity by employing him because my company benefited more from Partha. I have realized that physically challenged people are more faithful than others but unfortunately we usually pay scant attention to them.
At that time our office was on the first floor and Partha had difficulty dealing with the stairs. Seeing him struggle, I decided to make the entire office disabled-friendly. Our ground floor is now intended for the disabled people, and we have special toilets for them. We have also built houses for them near the office so that they can avoid long travelling hours.
After meeting Partha, I decided to hire more disabled people. We waited six months to get another disabled person who then became our receptionist.
I don’t regard employing disabled people as charity. I consider it my responsibility. The country has spent much money educating me and I feel it is time for me to do something as a reward.
It is great to work with them. Seeing them work, get married, settle in life and have children is a wonderful experience.
We have 550 employees now, and 20 percent of them are disabled. We go to Engineering Colleges looking for disabled people but only to find one or two in each college. Parents don’t send them out. The biggest challenge for the physically disabled is the attitude of their parents, but we hire them even if they are not engineers.

Twenty-four trains, nine countries, 13,500 miles.
They are the numbers behind a train journey one man took from Southampton in the UK to eastern China. Roger Tyers, 37, spent a month on board trains and over $2,500 — almost three times the cost of a return flight — to travel to the Chinese port city Ningbo for academic research in May, 2019. It was the climate crisis that drove this socialist to choose this complex route. Tyers told CNN that he felt it necessary to stop flying when UN climate experts warned last year that the world has less than 11 years to avoid disastrous levels of global warming.
Tyers is not the sole person to avoid air travel in response to climate change. Thousands of people worldwide have publicly promised to stop flying, including teenage activist Greta Thunberg, who has inspired youth climate protests around the world. Activist Maja Rosen started the “Flight Free” campaign in Sweden in 2018 with the aim of encouraging 100,000 people not to fly for one year.
Rosen, who stopped flying 12 years ago, says the “Flight Free” campaign helps fight the sense of hopelessness many people feel when it comes to dealing with climate change. “One of the problems is that people feel there’s no point in what you do as an individual. The campaign is about making people aware that if we do this together, we can actually make a huge difference,” she said.
A passenger’s footprint from an individual flight depends on a number of factors, including how far he flies, how full the plane is, and what class he travels in: First class passengers are given more space than economy passengers, meaning they’re responsible for a bigger part of the plane’s emissions. Tyers said that his train journey to China produced almost 90% less emissions than a return flight.

A taxi driver taught me a million-dollar lesson in customer satisfaction and expectation. Motivational speakers charge thousands of dollars to give this kind of training to corporate executives (企业高管) and staff. It cost me a $12 taxi ride.
I had flown into Dallas for the only purpose of calling on a customer. Time was of the essence and my plan included a quick turnaround trip from and back to the airport. A spotless taxi pulled up.
The driver rushed to open the passenger door for me and made sure I was comfortably seated before he closed the door. As he got in the driver’s seat, he mentioned that the neatly folded “Wall Street Journal” next to me was for my use. He then showed me several tapes and asked me what type of music I would enjoy.
Well! I looked around for a “Candid Camera”! Wouldn’t you I could not believe the service I was receiving! I took the opportunity to say, “Obviously you take great pride in your work. You must have a story to tell.”
“You bet,” he replied, “I used to be in Corporate America. But I got tired of thinking my best would never be good enough. I decided to find my niche in life where I could feel proud of being the best I could be. I knew I would never be a rocket scientist, but I love driving cars, being of service and feeling like I have done a full day’s work and done it well. So I became a taxi driver. One thing I know for sure, to be good in my business I could simply just meet the expectations of my passengers. But, to be GREAT in my business, I have to EXCEED the customer’s expectations! I like both the sound and the return of being ‘great’ better than just getting by on ‘average’”.

Learning outside of a classroom may still be a new thing for many people but not for Kamer ·Meli·Veseli, who’s completing his final year of high school that way. His family moved from Kosovo to Switzerland, so he’s doing his coursework remotely and will take a big test with all of his teachers at the end of the year. It’s the ideal arrangement for Meli since it allows him to manage his own schedule and pursue other interests in his free time. That’s where Spark and online learning come in.
Meli has always been a serious gamer, but he’s not just looking to have fun. He likes examining the technology behind his favorite games and is curious to understand how developers create the graphics, textures, and special effects. He really wanted to make his own games and actually did develop a couple on Android but wasn’t satisfied with the results.
Searching for online courses that could take his game to the next level, he found Spark, and it was “one of the happiest days of my life.”
But gaming isn’t the extent of Meli’s interests. He’s also a hopeful singer who’d always lacked the confidence to sing in public. Then he took courses on Spark and discovered exercises that could help him loosen and relax his throat and release his voice “10 times better in 10 minutes.” Now he plans for Switzerland’s version of the TV show “The Voice” in 2016! With Spark courses, Meli’s also brushing up on his drawing skills, which he picked up in his childhood. He finally created a perfect portrait of his older brother.
Wherever Meli’s dreams take him, he knows he’ll be able to find relevant courses on Spark: “The variety is unlimited — so many languages, all kinds of software, even things like meditation and cultural lessons. Whatever you want to learn, you’ll find it on Spark.”

When I was eight or nine years old, I wrote my first poem. My mother read the little poem and began to cry. “Buddy, you didn’t really write this beautiful, beautiful poem!”
Shyly, proud-bursting, I stammered that I had. She poured out her praise. Why, this poem was nothing short of genius! I glowed.
I spent the best part of that afternoon preparing for the arrival of my father. But he did not return until an hour late for dinner. “Ben, a beautiful thing has happened,” my mother began. “Buddy has written his first poem! And it’s beautiful, absolutely amazing.”
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to decide that for myself,” Father said.
That poem was only ten lines. But it seemed to take hours. I could hear my father breathing. “I think it’s lousy,” my father said.
“Ben, these are the first lines of poetry he’s ever written,” my mother was saying. “He needs encouragement.”
They quarreled over it. I couldn’t stand it another second. I ran from the dinning room bawling.
Up in my room I threw myself on the bed and sobbed.
A few years later I took a second look at that first poem; it was a pretty lousy poem. But it wasn’t until years later that the true meaning of that painful “first poem” experience dawned on me. As I became a professional writer, it became clearer and clearer to me how fortunate I had been. I had a mother who said, “Buddy, did you really write this I think it’s wonderful!” and a father who shook his head no and drove me to tears with “I think it’s lousy.” A writer — in fact every one of us in life — needs that loving-mother force from which all creation flows; and yet alone it is incomplete, even misleading, finally destructive, without the father force to caution, “Watch. Listen. Review. Improve.”

In life, once on a path, we tend to follow it, for better or worse. What’s sad is that even if it’s the latter, we often follow a certain path anyway because we are used to the way things are that we don’t even recognize that they could be different. Psychologists call this phenomenon functional fixedness.
This classic experiment will give you an idea of how it works—and a sense of whether you may have fallen into the same trap:
People are given a box of tacks (大头钉) and some matches and asked to find a way to attach a candle to a wall so that it bums properly. Typically, the subjects try tacking the candle to the wall or lighting it to fix it with melted wax (石蜡). The tacks are too short, and the candle doesn’t fasten to the wall. So how can you accomplish the task The successful technique is to use the tack box as a candle holder. You empty it, tack it to the wall, and stand the candle inside it.
To think of that, you have to look beyond the box’s usual role as a container just for tacks and reimagine it serving an entirely new purpose. That is difficult because we all suffer—to one degree or another—from functional fixedness. The inability to think in new ways affects people in every comer of society. The political theorist Hannah Arendt coined the phrase “frozen thoughts” to describe deeply held ideas that we no longer question but should. In Arendt’s eyes, the complacent reliance on such accepted “truths” also made people blind to ideas that didn’t fit their worldview, even when there was enough evidence for them. Frozen thinking has nothing to do with intelligence, she said, “It can be found in highly intelligent people ”
Another context in which frozen thinking can turn truly dangerous is medicine. If you land in the hospital, it’s natural to want to be treated by the most experienced physicians on staff. But according to a 2014 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), you’d be better off being treated by the relative novices (新手).

I remembered an incident when I was a teenage girl clearly. Once, I was travelling by train with my mom and my elder sister to visit my grandparents in another city. It was a day journey and we entered the ladies compartment(车室)of the train. It was crowded but we got seats and settled down. We kept our luggage under the seats and waited for the train to start.
Ladies kept on coming inside. The seats were quickly taken. Only one seat was empty when a woman with a baby entered. She was about to go over to the empty place when a big and strong man entered and walked to the seat quickly, sitting down with a thump(重击声). Therefore, the lady with the child held on to her bag and stood in the corner. I was watching all this angrily. I expected the woman standing there or any of the other ladies to speak out to ask the man to leave the ladies compartment.
However, no one spoke. My mom and my sister had their eyes shut to rest, unaware of anything wrong. I decided I could not disturb them. I could have offered my place but I was already squashed(挤扁)between my mom and my sister.
The train started. The woman standing beside the man was swaying(摇摆) to and fro with the train, with the screaming child in her arms. However, the manner-less man had no reaction. I was furious with the man for his bad behavior. I could no longer bear it, so I decided to help the woman in some way. I got up and walked calmly over to the man. I asked him if he could read. He made a bad face and said he could. Next, I asked him to read what was written on the back of his seat. He did so and saw “Ladies”on it. In my early 30s, I struggled to find a dream job. One of my friends reminded me that I’d always loved beauty, and suggested I apply for a licence, which would give me the freedom to set up my own business.
However, the only problem was that tuition fees were $6,000, which was out of my budget. I knew that my salary wouldn’t cover all the fees, even if I worked extra hours every day. I’d seen others set up crowdfunding papers to help them achieve their goals. I thought I’d do the same. Then, on a Friday night, I received a large amount of money in my bank account, which made me really surprised. There had been some mistakes. I assumed it was an illegal trick.
It turned out to be a donation. The name on it is one I instantly recognized: Chrissy Teigen, my favorite TV host. She had left a note: “I’ve seen that this has been your dream for such a long time. I’m so happy to lend you a hand.” I called my mom immediately. I was crying and not making much sense. I just managed to say that Chrissy Telgen had made my dream come true.
The amount might have been a drop in the ocean for her, but it was life-changing for me. Lots of other people donated after her. Soon I paid all the fees for the course. I couldn’t have been happier. I’ve now set up my own business, and I always think about Chrissy’s generosity. I did thank her, and I still follow each other on Twitter. Hopefully, I will be able to give her a beauty treatment someday.

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.In general the person feels excited and ready to act.
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

Why would human beings waste a third of their lives sleeping when they could be doing more important things like looking after their families or working Some scientists believe sleeping helps recharge the body. while others think it is important for strengthening newly formed memories. Now, there is new evidence which suggests that the purpose of sleep may be to forget some of the millions of new things we learn each day.
The neurons in the human brain consist of fibers called dendrites (树突). These grow as we learn new things and connect the brain’s cells to each other at contact points called synapses (突触). The larger the dendrites become and the more cells they connect, the more information we store.
In 2018. Giulio Tononi and Chiara Cirelli, both biologists at the University of Wisconsin Madison, suggested a new idea: The things our brains learn each day result in so many synapses that things start to get a little messy. Sleeping allows us to sort through (整理) the “noise” and dispense all the unnecessary information. leaving behind only the most important memories.
Recently, the university’s research has provided direct evidence to support the theory. The experiment involved analyzing 6. 920 synapses in the brain shavings from two groups of mice over a four-year period: one group had been allowed to sleep, while the other had been kept awake and entertained with toys. The researchers discovered that the brain shavings of the sleeping mice had nearly 20 percent fewer synapses than those that had been kept awake and entertained.
It was also evident during the study that the brain does not shave every synapse. 20% of neurons remained unchanged: these were most likely well established memories. Therefore. although we may be sleeping to forget some of what we’ve learned, the brain “forgets” in a smart way.
Most researchers believe clearing our brains is not the only purpose of sleep.
Resting our minds and bodies has also been found to help with other biological functions like strengthening our immunity. Though scientists may never agree on a single reason. they are all sure of one thing — a good night’s rest is essential for our health. So try and spend at least a third of your day sleeping!

You can learn a lot sitting in a parking lot. The other day I was sitting in my car with my sons reading a book while my daughter finished grocery shopping. From time to time, I would look up and observe what was going on outside. One of those times I saw a huge, new, bright red, Cadillac SUV pull up in the parking spot beside me. Out of it stepped a well-dressed young woman in high heels. Her face was tight and determined and her eyes hidden behind sunglasses. I watched her as she headed for the store and wondered about her life.
A moment later a 30-year-old station wagon pulled up beside the SUV. It smelled of burning oil and probably didn’t have many months of life left in its engine. Out of it stepped a young mom with 4 little girls all under the age of 12. All were dressed in worn clothes. She gathered them together and they headed to the store laughing and talking all the way.
A while later I saw the Cadillac lady coming out, pushing a cart filled with a new television set. She threw it in the back and pulled out quickly, her eyes still hidden, her face still frowning. Fifteen minutes after her the station wagon mom emerged with her little girls. They had a week’s worth of groceries in their cart. After unloading it, the mom took out two pieces of cookies, broke both in half, and gave each girl a half of cookie. They smiled like it was the most priceless gift in the world. As they pulled out I thought about the two women. I clearly knew which one had the most money, but I wasn’t sure which one really had the most.
In this life there are many kinds of riches but the most valuable one of all is love. The truth is the one who loves the most: learns the most, lives the most, gives the most, and grows the most in this life. It is the real riches of this life.

“Mom, look at this LEGO Star Wars set,” my eight-year-old son Nathan said. “Can I get it for my birthday ” I looked at the LEGO set in question.
“Nathan, this isn’t just a regular LEGO set. It’s an Advent calendar(降临历).” Seeing his questioning look, I explained, “An Advent calendar counts down the days until Christmas. Starting on December 1st, you open one box each day, and each box contains one small LEGO toy.”
“I want this really badly, Mom. Can I get it for my birthday ”
“Yes, but here’s the problem with that. It’s August right now, and your birthday is in September. If we bought this for your birthday, you couldn’t start opening the toys until December 1st. That would be a long time for you before playing with a new toy. Are you sure you want it ” He thought for a minute and said, “Yes, Mom, I really want that Advent calendar.” So we bought the calendar.
On Nathan’s birthday in mid-September, he received many presents, including the Advent calendar. He seemed as surprised and pleased with it as he did with other gifts that were actually a surprise. And then he started to open it.
“Remember that’s an Advent calendar. So we can’t open it yet.” His shoulders slumped(垂下来). “Oh, yeah, that’s right,” he said unwillingly.
We put the box in his closet. I hoped he’d forget about it, but that was wishful thinking.
“How many more days should I wait until I can start opening the toys in the calendar ” he asked the day after his birthday. I gave him a pocket calendar, and we counted how many days there were until December 1st.
After waiting for so long, it was December 1st finally. Nathan’s hands were practically shaking as he opened that first box. “I’m so glad I waited, Mom,” he told me.
People say that Christmas starts earlier and earlier every year. I know these complaints are about the over-commercialization of the holiday, and I see their point. But this year, Christmas came to our house very early, and it was so much fun.

While other teenagers might be busy taking care of their personal pages online or playing games for hours, 14-year-old Jackson Oswalt from Memphis has been busy doing something different. He has spent his free time building his own nuclear reactor (核反应堆) in his home. Now, the boy is praised by city leaders for his achievement as he is the youngest person to have achieved nuclear fusion (核聚变).
At just 12 years old, Jackson chose to spend his time exploring his interest in nuclear physics. After scouring the Internet, the student learned of the story of Taylor Wilson, an Arkansas boy who won recognition in the field of science as the youngest person to achieve nuclear fusion in 2008 at the age of 14. Jackson was greatly inspired by him.
The process of the nuclear experiment is not easy at all. But Jackson thought if Wilson could do it, then he could, too. Maybe he could even break Wilson’s record in the process. The boy started his project by turning his playroom into a laboratory. Then he bought different kinds of things to build own nuclear fusion reactor.
“The beginning of the scientific research was just learning about what other people had done with their fusion reactors,” Jackson said. His parents spent nearly $8,000 to $10,000 supporting his nuclear experiment. “With the money, I searched for and bought the parts that I needed. Often the parts I found were not exactly what I wanted, so I had to make improvements to them.”
Jackson’s hard work finally paid off. Hours before his 13th birthday, he made history as the youngest person to achieve nuclear fusion in January last year. Months after the project, Jackson continued to test his fusion reactor to further prove his project. On Tuesday, Memphis City leaders officially praised Jackson’s achievements with a resolution.

As we enjoy the summer ocean waves along the beaches, we may think nervously about Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and the great fear that sharks inspire in us.
Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem. Sharks, in particular, are “in” these days. Thanks to good public policy and famous stars such as Jackie Chan and Ang Lee, killing sharks for fin soup is no longer cool.
The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction (灭绝)—up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins. But we have started to reverse the trend, particularly in many areas of the United States and overseas where restaurants once proudly provided delicious shark fins on the menu.
In California, a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations. Overseas marketing and public efforts featuring posters on public transportation systems and TV ads have been underway for the past few years. These efforts all show signs of success, on both the supply side and the demand side of trade in shark fins.
Actually, stopping the killing of sharks is part of a broader movement to stop the killing of wild animals and the buying and selling of wildlife products. These products come from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos, besides killing marine life. Whether it is shark fin soup or ivory piano keys, killing animals is big business. The hunting of elephants in search of ivory tusks for luxury (奢侈的) goods has become a fall-scale war. The decrease of African elephant populations is alarming. Together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.

Do you scan yourself in your early 20s already dressed in a smart suit as well as using a company phone Currently more and more young people have been looking for internships (实习生职位) rather than Saturday jobs. But should people be expected to do a proper job at all while they’re still young
For many, weekend or evening work is a rite of passage that may involve cleaning toilets, milking cows or operating the machine that puts jam into a doughnut.
Plentiful teenagers or students aren’t impressive in holding down a part-time job. But it’s a opportunity to try to experience the world of work and take a crucial first step into adulthood.
But the number of young people doing a Saturday job has decreased by a half in 15 years, according to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. It’s economic downturn that has kept it rough for young people to find any kind of job. And many enterprises put forward higher requirement, which are associated with this phenomenon as well. For those seeking a career, there is now greater pressure to choose professional jobs and get work experience.
Those who go on to successful careers often mention their days of waiting tables or picking fruit as experiences of growth. Actor Sean Connery may have the 007 role as a protuberance on his CV while he embarked on working as a milkman when only 14. George Clooney once strove for selling women’s shoes.
What is a proper job White collar work is a golden job that a host of people want to obtain and professionals in finance, advertising, journalism and the law often work exceedingly long hours. However, there is a sense that sitting at a desk all one’s life is not always real work in the same way as some other jobs are.
Dr Paul Sissons, senior researcher at the Work Foundation, argues that the solid choice to realised occupation triumph could be getting eminent grades. He says that formal qualifications still influence employers’ decision.

Did you ever wonder where Legos come from A box A toy store A factory Yes. But where did they first come from Who invented them What was that person’s story When you learn about the Lego story, you will be surprised!
Like many great inventions, the story is not just one of the great ideas, but of a ton of hard work, perseverance and courage. The story starts off in Denmark. Ole Kirk Christiansen was a carpenter who was struggling with his business. Then his wife, the mother of his 4 boys, died. This was very hard for everyone. He was looking for new ways to make money and to make his kids happy.
So, he started making wood toys. They were of great quality. His 4 sons helped him with his business and, soon, word spread and big orders started coming in. But then the toys did not sell very well. He decided his toys needed a new name. He chose the name “Lego”, which in Danish means “play well”.
Then, a few years later, his workshop was burned to the ground. Everything was destroyed. Ole almost gave up. But he decided it was very important to support his employees and kids.
Not long after, he started to make a few plastic toys. He then got the idea to create a ‘system’ of toys that would build kids’ imagination and creativity. He built a village to test the idea. And the idea caught on quick! Soon sales were pouring in. Then they figured out how to connect the pieces to each other. Soon they decided to stop making wood toys and focus only on the connected plastic toys.
Then they started to build more and more kinds of models. Each one had to be of the highest quality. Lego’s motto is “only the best is good enough.”

Middle school is a fun time for young teens. You meet new people and go to parties. But many teenagers notice their grades descending in middle school. Classes get harder and it is tougher to keep up. Besides, going to parties takes up a lot of time. The following are some tips on how to improve your grades in middle school.
★Talk to your parents and see how they can help. Ask them for little things, like keeping the TV off for an hour while you study and do homework, or keeping you on task by checking once in a while to make sure you aren’t playing computer games. Parents have gone through school and they can help.
★Seek teachers’ advice as well. They have taught hundreds of students and know many different approaches to learning. See if they can meet with you twice a week after school to help you find out the best way for you to learn.
★Ask for extra homework. If your grade is becoming lower and you need a quick improvement, see if the teacher can give you any extra homework for you to do at home.
★Practice makes perfect. Do your homework every night. If you don’t have homework, review what you have learned for at least 10 minutes. If you are struggling in a class and the teacher doesn’t give homework often, consider asking some questions from the book once in a while to review. Sure, other students will think you are crazy, but if it helps, it doesn’t matter. If the problem lies beyond something you can control, such as a learning disability or problems at home, ask help from a teacher or parent.
★Have your own study area where you can study without being distracted. This study area should also improve your motivation of learning, so decorate it with things that will help you stay organized and not with things that will distract you.

When I was a boy growing up, I could not once ever remember either my mom or my grandmother wasting food. Anything we didn’t eat at one meal was saved, stored, and served as leftovers (剩饭剩菜) later on. I can remember my grandmother making a huge pot of brown beans with a large cake of cornbread. We would all eat until we were stuffed but there was always about half of the beans left over. A few days later my grandmother would take those beans out of the refrigerator, boil pasta, add parsley and mix them all together into her delicious Pasta Fasule. And I also remember when I watched my mom fry bacon for us in the mornings, she would always take the grease (油脂) and carefully pour it into a container. Then she later would use it to flavor up so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that green beans didn’t actually taste like bacon.
I learned their lessons well and after I grew up I tried never to waste food by myself. I always planned the week’s meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so nothing went to waste. Every meal went into my stomach and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself, my boys, or my dogs. To me throwing food in the trash was just wrong. All the work it took to grow it, harvest it, and prepare it needed to be honored, not wasted.
I learned something else over the years, however: when it comes to living there are no leftovers. Each moment that you don’t live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved. Life cannot be stored. Life has to be lived, TODAY!
Live each moment of your life to the fullest then. Make every day a feast of love with no leftovers. Leo Buscaglia once said: “Each day is a fresh beginning, a little life unto itself.” Don’t let any of these little lives go to waste. Live your life with a full belly and a full heart.

When I was a kid, there was only one way my parents would let me stay home from school and that was if I had a high fever. Most of my friends could stay home due to a stomachache or a mild fever — but not me… I had to be dying in order to stay home. By the way, my parents are both doctors. My parents used to say that they were teaching me how to have a good work ethic(职业道德). I didn’t understand the connection until last week.
The other day I was on the train and sat behind a young man who was complaining to his friend about his life. He went on for twenty minutes about how his passion in life was to make movies, but he wouldn’t pursue it because he had no clue if he could make enough money and he didn’t want to waste time because it would take years to make it big. He then admitted to thinking about buying stocks by borrowing money because he thought he could easily make six figures within one year. His friend agreed with him and said, “The stock is good because you can make tons of money and only work for a short time.”
I think they were indulging(沉溺) in the wildest fantasy. Many people these days don’t realize that when things seem to happen immediately, it is only because a lot of effort, determination and time have gone into them and it isn’t due to some miraculous(不可思议的) event. The easier it looks, the more hours go into it. There is no excuse for laziness.
Looking at the two young men, all of a sudden I was having a flashback of being ten years old and watching the television show Fame.
In the show the dance teacher told her students, “If you want fame, fame costs and here’s how you start paying for it … in sweat.” Every time we watched that show, my dad would proudly say how right the teacher was because in order to succeed you have to work hard.
