Recently, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an artificial intelligence(AI) tool, called MusicLM, built to create music. It is not the first AI music tool to launch. But the examples Google provides demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words. AI shows how complex computer systems have been trained to behave in human-like ways. Google engineers explain the MusicLM system this way.
First, a user comes up with a word or words that describe the kind of music they want the tool to create. For example, a user could enter this short phrase into the system: “a continuous calming violin backed by a soft guitar sound.”The descriptions entered can include different music styles, instruments or other existing sounds. Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one-or-two-word descriptions, such as “jazz”, or “techno”. The system created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences. In the resulting recording, the music seems to keep very close to the description. The team said that the more detailed the description is, the better the system can attempt to produce it.
In addition to generating new music from written descriptions, the team said the system can also create examples based on a person’s own singing, whistling or playing an instrument. The researchers said the tool “produces high-quality music...over several minutes, while being faithful to the text conditioning signal”.
Although MusicLM hasn’t been released for public use, Google announced it was releasing a “high-quality dataset” of more than 5,500 music-writing pairs prepared by professional musicians called MusicCaps. The researchers took that step to assist in the development of other AI music generators.
The MusicLM researchers said they believe they have designed a new tool to help anyone quickly and easily create high-quality music selections. However, the team said it also recognizes some risks linked to the machine learning process.

Companies are developing drone(无人机) delivery services. In 2013, Amazon, an online retailer, announced an experimental drone delivery service. Packages containing anything from toothpaste to a new smartphone would arrive at your front door by drone. The drone would land, drop your parcel, and fly away. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said at the time that the service would take four or five years to develop. But it’s been a little more than 10 years. “It will continue to take time.” Amazon added.
Widespread drone delivery could have a huge impact. But as Amazon’s struggles show, there are plenty of challenges, including the need for more warehouses(仓库) and concerns about airspace safety.
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, also has a drone delivery service called Wing. James Ryan Burgess is Wing’s CEO. You can imagine a future where there are delivery drone aircraft spread throughout a city, he says. Those aircraft can serve the community whenever somebody has a need to receive or send a package.
Wing’s drones can wirelessly charge at a landing pad when they return from a delivery. Routes are determined based on factors such as distance, and airspace rules. Deliveries are dropped in front of homes, which means human interaction(互动) is unnecessary.
Samaras is a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He says that drone delivery could impact flying wildlife. And if drone delivery increases, providers will need space to ship and maintain drones. That means more warehouses. You have to heat, light, and power those warehouses. And that amount of energy reduces the benefits. This leads to an important question that people need to ask themselves: Do we want hundreds or thousands of drones over all of our cities

Growing up in Georgia, Thanksgiving for me meant driving a couple hours south to my mom’s house in Augusta on Wednesday night and staying up late playing. First thing the next morning,at around 4 or 5 a.m., my mom would put the bird in the oven and roast it low and slow for eight hours, applying oil to it every 30 minutes and watching it like hawks. For this practice, for years I thought turkey was the absolute hardest thing to cook in the world.
I also thought that turkey was, on principle, meant to be dry. The thing is, roasting a great, juicy turkey isn’t as complicated(复杂的) as people make it out to be. For me, I’ve found that the best method is to just roast it like a chicken. No black magic.
Defrost your turkey (if it’s frozen). Ideally you’d let this happen gradually in a 40°F refrigerator. Bring your turkey to room temperature. A fridge-cold bird will not cook as evenly as a room-temperature bird. Truss(捆绑) your turkey, which will ensure even cooking. Season your turkey in the sink. This is very important. Most people season their turkeys straight in its roasting pan, leading to extra salt at the bottom. Another issue is that if you’re applying melted(融化的) butter and some of that drips off into the pan, the milk fats can burn, and the one thing we don’t want on Thanksgiving Day is for the smoke alarm to go off. Roast your turkey. Many recipes(食谱) call for a high start and a low finish. But I like to roast my turkey from start to finish at a moderate 350°F. Rest your turkey. Do not carve the bird until it’s rested for at least 30 minutes. Don’t worry, it’ll still be hot—better yet, the juices will have spread all over and you’ll be looking at the tenderest, juiciest turkey of your life.
9.How does the author introduce the topic
A.By raising a question. B.By giving an example.
C.By making some comments. D.By explaining a phenomenon.
10.What does the underlined word “Season” in paragraph 3 mean

B.The butter applied to the turkey melts.
C.The temperature of roasting the turkey is high.
D.Some extra salt is left at the bottom of the pan.
12.What is the text mainly about
A.A simplest way to cook your turkey. B.A celebration for Thanksgiving Day.
C.Roasting turkey is a traditional custom. D.The turkey symbolizes Thanksgiving Day.
I met a beautiful soul yesterday. I went to work with my computer to a local cafe so that I could have dinner there. It was raining a bit this time and also I was among people. Sometimes when you work from home all day this is in itself a treat. And the magic of connection sometimes happens — a smile, someone offering you the newspaper, a short conversation with the staff, a peace dove flying past and lots of possibilities for love and kindness.
Well, magic did happen. I heard a man who was speaking with difficulty and very loud. I noticed he could not speak so clearly and he had some kind of impairment (损伤). As often happened, people looked at him-or avoided doing so-and then-as if embarrassed or afraid — looked down. In these cases I try to do the opposite. I imagined a person in these circumstances would want to feel included.
So I decided to deliberately look at him and smile. It was an instant! He looked at me, smiled and immediately said hello. With a combination of spoken and body language he asked if he could approach me. I agreed. He introduced me to his friend who taught sign language online and explained that they were both deaf, after which he even told me about his wife and how he loved teaching. I apologized for not knowing sign language and hoped I’d learnt. We still managed to have a beautiful conversation which made us all very happy. I’m sure we’ll meet again to experience the magic of being and being with others.

As the world has changed,so has education. Since 2018, Nelly Cheboi and her non-profit TechLit Africa have been bringing computer technology into schools in Kenya, helping students join the digital world, and unlock their potential. With its own software programs, curriculum (课程) and teacher training programs, this non-profit hopes to change Africa.
In 2012, Cheboi received a scholarship to College in Illinois that changed her life. She grew up in poverty in rural Kenya, watching her mother struggle to support her family alone. Cheboi had no experience with computers before moving to the US to study. She hand wrote papers and then struggled to type them out on a laptop computer. Somehow she fell in love with computer science and began a career in the field. But she did not lose sight of her origins. “As an undergraduate, I invested all of my income from various campus jobs into my community back in Kenya,” she said on the TechLit Africa website. But soon she wanted to do more for it and that is how TechLit Africa began.
Cheboi recalled how her background helped her understand how important technological knowledge could be for children living in poverty. She built a school with the idea of bringing computer science as part of kids’ curriculum growing up. But she found that it was going to be really hard to impact as many people as possible, because it was so hard to fund raise. Then in order to reach more students, she introduced computer training to existing schools. Cheboi physically dragged over 40 recycled computers that had been donated to them by various tech companies to Kenya in suitcases.
Now, since the non-profit has grown, it works with various companies that help them clean the donated computers of data and send them to Africa. TechLit Africa runs its own curriculum with its own software programs in 10 Kenyan schools, and the hope is to increase to 100 throughout Africa by next year. The students love learning about computers, and in turn are gaining skills that will help them make use of their talents into a way out of poverty.

A study from the University of Montreal and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, published in Frontiers in Medicine, found that regular virtual visits to museums could help seniors stay mentally active and come with a host of additional health benefits. That’s because these digital connections can make retirees feel less lonely and isolated(孤立的).
Social isolation has been associated with the risks for heart disease and the decline of recognition abilities in seniors and the pandemic(疫情)increased the risks due to the need for seniors to stay home and isolate, according to a press release from the university.
The researchers investigated the potential benefits of weekly virtual visits for a three-month period. The participants were people aged 65 and older who lived in Montreal. Half of the participants took part in online visits and a discussion afterwards, while the control group did not participate in any cultural events at all. The group who participated in the virtual visits showed improvements in their quality of life. “Our study showed that art-based activities may be an effective intervention,”lead author Dr. Olivier Beauchet, a professor at the University of Montreal, said in the press release. “On a global scale, this participatory art-based activity could become a model that could be offered in museums and arts institutions worldwide to promote active and healthy aging.”
The initiative reflects approaches recommended by the World Health Organization to manage certain diseases, according to Beauchet. For instance, the WHO launched the Aging and Health Program in 2015 that included using community-based organizations to promote culture as a key component of improving health. Traditionally, these sorts of preventive health activities have taken place in schools, community centers, and workplaces. “While these are suitable locations that reach a great number of people, there are additional organizations and sectors that could become partners in public health research and practice development,” Beauchet said. “Museums are among such potential partners. They are aware of the needs of their communities and are consequently expanding the types of activities they offer.”

Facebook parent company Meta recently showed how the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tool can translate between English and the Hokkien language. Its project required different, unusual development methods. That is because Hokkien is mainly a spoken language. It does not have a widely used written form.
Generally, developers of translation systems train AI models on very large amounts of written text in the target languages. This arms the system with many different language examples and combinations in an effort to produce the most correct results.
In general, AI-powered translation systems have improved greatly in recent years. It is now easier than ever to get translation help online or on devices to make international communication better. But one problem with such systems is that there are delays linked to the translation process. For example, when the system records spoken speech, the words are first converted into text and then translated by an AI system. Then, the translated words are converted back into speech so they can be heard.
The unusual part of the Meta project is that the development team did not have large amounts of Hokkien language text to feed into the AI system.
Hokkien is a dialect of Chinese. It is spoken by millions of people in Fujian Province and Taiwan. Additionally, it is also widely spoken in some areas in Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. Generally, families passed down the language throughout the generations.
Meta said it used several different methods to create the new system to translate to and from Hokkien and English. The team trained its AI models on written text examples from another version of Chinese, Mandarin, which is similar to Hokkien. In addition, Méta developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text. The team also worked closely with Hokkien speakers to make sure the results were correct.
The company said, however, that its Hokkien translation model is still a work in progress. It noted that the system is only able to translate one full sentence at a time at the moment.
31.What makes Meta’s project of translating Hokkien unusual
A.The lack of its written form. B.The special Chinese writing system.
C.The limited speakers of Hokkien. D.The complex language examples and combinations.
32.What does the underlined word “converted” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Transformed. B.Guided. C.Sorted. D.Returned.
33.What do AI-powered translation systems fail to do now
A.Get everyone to have access to online translation.
B.Use devices to communicate internationally.
C.Provide a real time translation at any place.
D.Produce the most correct translation results
34.What is the main idea of the sixth paragraph
A.How Mandarin is similar to Hokkien. B.How Hokkien speakers speak Hokkien.
C.How English text is translated into Hokkien. D.How Meta’s translation system translates Hokkien.
In the threatening trouble of climate change, growing commercial crops on solar farms is a potentially efficient use of agricultural land that can both increase commercial food production and improve solar panel performance and longevity(寿命), according to a new Cornell research.
“We now have, for the first time, a physics-based tool to estimate the costs and benefits of co-locating solar panels and commercial agriculture in terms of increased power conversion efficiency and solar-pancl longevity, ” said lead author Henry Williams, a doctoral student in Cornell Engineering.
“There is potential for agrivoltaic (农业光伏) systems-where agriculture and solar panels coexist-to provide increased passive cooling through taller panel heights, more reflective ground cover and higher evapotranspiration (蒸散) rates compared to traditional solar farms,” said Max Zhang, professor in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, “We can generate renewable electricity and conserve farmland through agrivoltaic systems.” In New York, for example, about 40% of solar farm capacity has been developed on agricultural lands, while about 84% of land suitable for solar development is agricultural, according to a previous research study from Zhang’s group.
The engineers showed that solar panels mounted over vegetation reveal surface temperature drops compared to those built over bare ground. Solar panels were mounted 4 meters above a cotton crop and the solar panels showed temperature reductions by up to 10 degrees Celsius, compared with those mounted a half-meter above bare soil.
“As you decrease the solar panel operating temperature, you can increase efficiency and improve the longevity of your solar panels, ” said Williams, “We’re showing double benefits. On one hand, you have food production for farmers, and on the other hand, we’ve shown improved longevity and improved conversion efficiency for solar developers.”
“Up to this point, most of the benefits from agrivoltaic systems have been around areas with abundant sunshine, ” said Zhang, “This research is taking a step toward evaluating the application of agrivoltaics in climates representative of the Northeastern U. S. in relaxing the land-use competition it faces.”

It’s an unconventional setting. Children of varying ages are reading actively. Seated next to them are teenagers, many of them girls, staring at the Hindi alphabet(字母表)on the blackboard. In charge of this class are three young girls, not much older than their students. But when Tabassum, Tarannum and Rubina, no more than 22, start speaking, you know the difference. Their confidence takes you by surprise.
A little over 10 kilometres from Varanasi lies the village of Sajoi where illiteracy(文 盲)was quite common. It had blocked out modernity until recently, especially when it came to its women. Educating girls was considered pointless, and the possibility of women stepping out of their homes, unthinkable.
Things began to change in 2010 when Human Welfare Association (HWA), identified Sajoi for a planned intervention. HWA set up a centre in Sajoi to offer free education but the villagers needed to be convinced to join in. The organization needed volunteers who valued education. Tabassum, Tarannum and Rubina embraced the opportunity.
After completing their high school education, the girls set out on another important mission-persuading the locals to send their children to schools. “We went knocking at every door, talking to elders, “recalls Rubina. Some villagers asked them to mind their own business. “We didn’t let all this distract our attention from the main goal, ” Rubina says.
The girls honed their approach. They didn’t ask people to stop their children from working, but urged them to send them to schools for an hour or two. Slowly, children started trickling(缓 慢增加)in. Motivational Learning Centre, as the girls call it, is no replacement for school. It is there, in fact, that they create the hunger for knowledge. It also helps school-going children so they don’t lose interest and drop out.
Those who doubted the girls’ intentions now recommend the centre to others. The number of admissions to schools has steadily increased and the dropout rate in Sajoi has fallen.

Travelling in Paris
The uniform sandstone of the Haussmann buildings, the variety of golden historic monuments, and the attractive Seine and its elegant bridges have arguably made Paris the most recognizable and romanticized cityscape in the world. But though the city wears its history with characteristic style, it is also increasingly looking to the future and outwards to the rest of the world.
Where to go
Those looking to explore the city’s rich heritage can spend long afternoons getting lost in the Louvre or wandering the Orsay Museum, or ducking in and out of Paris’s countless historical churches. For more contemporary tastes, there’s plenty of exploring to be done in the less jam-packed outer regions-from arts venues (场所) on the sloping streets of Belleville to the luxurious hotels and reinvented bars.
When to go
You can come to Paris any time but the atmosphere is quite different at different times of year. Winter is a time for festivals and feasting on games and oysters (牡蛎). Spring and early summer are the time to make the most of city parks and café terraces, with fireworks set off on June 21 and military parade held on July 14. In August the capital slows down and some people love it for the feeling of calm. The autumn renewable activities start with a burst of energy for the new cultural season and big exhibition openings.
What to buy
Choose from one of the tastiest cheese selections in the city at La Fermetteon Rue Montorgueil and vacuum-pack your selection to bring home.

Cleaning up the table, I caught sight of small round plastic pieces. I discovered they were the tops or covers of color markers I had kept on the table. The only difference was that someone got those covers and chewed them into shapelessness. On another part of the table, I saw the color markers dried up without covers. I was almost sure I knew who had done it and I could not understand the motivation behind his actions.
As I considered my discovery, my frustration and disappointment gradually went away when I remembered that as a child, I did several weird(奇怪的)things that must have bothered my mother. I cut our shoes, I chewed pens and pencils, and I wrote and drew pictures on walls and destroyed many items at home. The mind of a child is curious and explorative, seeking to understand and test the limits of many things. Of course, it can be costly, but what is growing up if no mistakes are made
We call it paying the school fees of life. If a child plays with a hot iron and it burns them, it is a given that they will not go near the iron again. Sometimes I watch the children in my neighborhood playing dangerous games. Occasionally, I have got myself involved and spoken up, but sometimes I let it pass. Until someone has fallen off his bike, they may not want to be told to stop riding with reckless abandon(毫无顾忌). Until a child has fallen down, they will not listen when asked to get down from the tree. However, wisdom shows that if the behavior is deadly, you should get involved in time.
Creativity is a valuable quality. And this is why we should encourage children to remain innovative rather than be simple recipients of everything they have known and seen. Allow children to make mistakes, but this must be followed with supervision(监督), monitoring, and correction.

A.What is growing up without making mistakes
B.How to help children grow up quickly
C.How to deal with children’s mistakes
D.What really matters in growing up
I know in these days of social media teens are measured by the size of their social circles. Their followers, likes, and friends they can contact seem to be the measure of their self-worth. They feel they need a huge group of friends, and that they have to be liked by everyone.
When I was young, I thought when it came to friends, the more, the better. I was always on the hunt for new friends, which wasn’t hard for me because I was very lively and outgoing. Now, I have a few close friends who I’ve had for thirty years. I’m so grateful for that. These are the friends who have stuck by me through life’s ups and downs even if we are living in different places or are in different phases of life.
Of course, there have been other friendships that have come and gone depending on the stage of my life. The older I get, the more I’m okay with letting certain friendships and people fade out of my life.
I don’t want my kids to chase friendships just to get their number up or think that the more friends they have, the better off they’ll be. As you get older you don’t need a hundred friends, but just a few good ones. The truth is that there is only so much energy we have for nurturing(培养)love in a few true friendships. You just can’t give your closest friends enough of yourself when you are always looking for more people to join your group.
That doesn’t mean I’m teaching my kids not to let anyone else in. I just want them to know that after they graduate from high school and as they get older, having lots of friends matters less and less. What really makes a difference in someone’s life is having one or two true friends that they can trust and rely on.

There are glistening and groaning icebergs, playful Adélie, emperor penguins, sunbathing Weddell seals, and spouting sperm whales(抹香鲸)in Antarctica which is the coldest, windiest, driest continent on earth and for many travelers, the final frontier. Today more opportunities than ever are open for tourists to check Antarctica off their bucket lists. But to do that, you have to have the right equipment.
Most journeys to Antarctica are on scientific research ships that also transport tourists. Unlike a traditional cruise(航行), however, you won’t need fancy formal wear for the dining room. Dress on board is casual and above all else, keep safety in mind. Ships typically ban any footwear that’s open-toed or high-heeled, but your tuxedo T-shirt will be just fine for a penguin theme night. The most surprising thing you probably won’t need to pack for Antarctica is a coat. Most cruise operators provide one as part of your package, both for the branding opportunity and for safety reasons. It’s easier to find boatloads of guests on shore journeys when everyone is dressed alike.
Before you step foot on the southernmost continent, you’ll have to brave the Drake Passage. Those who make the crossing frequently will tell you that it’s referred to as the “Drake Shake” or the “Drake Lake“, depending on the swell of the sea. If it’s the former, you’ll want to be prepared with seasickness medicine.
As you approach your first landing, the ship’s crew will check your outdoor wear and camera equipment like tripods for any tiny stowaways. Everything will be examined, vacuumed(抽真空), and brushed to remove foreign particle like dirt and seeds in order to protect Antarctica’s environment.
A waterproof backpack is useful for keeping your camera equipment dry, and your phone secure and handy for quick photos. The extreme cold will drain the batteries in your electronic devices faster than usual, so bring extras and keep them in an inner coat pocket to benefit from your body heat until you need them.
Double-check your luggage and keep the above in mind before you depart.
52.Which of the following meets the dressing requirement for passengers heading for Antarctica
A.Wearing flat-heeled and closed-toed shoes.

A.It’s the most difficult passage worldwide.
B.It’s the most famous tourist spot in Antarctica.
C.Crossing it can bring travelers physical discomfort.
D.Asking others for advice will make it less dangerous.
54.What should tourists bear in mind before going to Antarctica according to Paragraph 4
A.Learning about its environment.
B.Avoiding bringing dirt from there.
C.Carrying as much photographic equipment as possible.
D.Bringing no foreign seeds with them.
55.What does the underlined word “drain” in the fifth paragraph mean

【导语】本文是说明文。介绍了谷歌发明的名为MusicLM的人工智能(AI)工具,该工具用于创作音乐。
1.推理判断题。根据第二段中“Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were publihed online. Some of the generated music came from just one-or-two-word descriptions, such as “jazz”, or “techno”. The system created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences. In the resulting recording, the music seems to keep very close to the description. The team said that the more detailed the description is, the better the system can attempt to produce it.(MusicLM制作的几个不同的音乐示例在网上发布。有些生成的音乐仅仅来自一两个词的描述,如“爵士”或“电子乐”。该系统从包含完整句子的更详细的描述中创建了其他示例。在最终的录音中,音乐似乎与描述非常接近。该团队表示,描述越详细,系统就能更好地尝试生成它)”可知,描述越详细,系统就能更好地尝试生成它,结合选项,B项“A piano piece to uplift one’s spirits.(振奋精神的钢琴曲)”描述的最详细。故选B项。
2.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Although MusicLM hasn’t been released for public use, Google announced it was releasing a “high-quality dataset” of more than 5,500 music-writing pairs prepared by professional musicians called MusicCaps.
