With my parents away on a business trip, I planned to spend a quiet weekend at home. But when my friend Chickie and Dom, invited me to join them for an afternoon at the beach, I was attracted. “I had an asthma(哮喘) attack yesterday, and it really tired me out,” I warned them. “So I’ll probably just lie out on the sand.”
A few hours later, relaxing under a sun umbrella after a picnic lunch, I was glad I’d come. Chickie and Dom went for a swim. They liked to go far out into the sea. I was bathed in the sun until I got too hot, then took a walk down to the shore.
For a few minutes I just let the waves lap around my legs. The ocean was smooth as glass. I could float on my back as if I were in a swimming pool, I thought, and did. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the gentle rocking.
After some time, I opened my eyes and looked around. How did I get so far from shore I hadn’t realized how quickly the sea was carrying me.
I started swimming as quick and hard as I could. Even so I wasn’t getting any closer, and it was becoming harder to breathe. I turned around, looking for help, but I seemed to be completely alone in the water. Far off on the sand I could see people packing up their belongings. It must be nearly five o’clock, I thought. That’s when the lifeguard went off duty.
A wave slapped(拍打) my face and I swallowed salt water. My chest was already burning as I struggled to breathe. In desperation I raised one hand and waved it to get the lifeguard’s attention. “I’ll never last till he reaches me,” I thought. “They’re all too far away. I can’t get myself heard here and nobody even sees me!”

It was 7:15 a. m. on Monday, and Frank, an engineer, was on his morning run along the East River. Suddenly, something caught his eyes-a large 60-year-old man balancing on the four-foot-high railing (栏杆) that guarded the path from the water. Curious and confused, Frank stopped to get closer to the scene, only to find the man took a step forward and dropped into the dark river below.
When Frank reached the railing, the man was struggling in the water, clearly unable to swim. He screamed desperately for help as the current pulled him away from the bank.
By now, a crowd had gathered on land. People had called the police, but it was unclear when they’d get there. Without hesitation, dropping his phone and keys on land, Frank jumped in. Just as the old man was losing strength, Frank grabbed hold of him. Unexpectedly, the strong wind forced the water to tear them apart again.
Having seen what had happened, another two joggers made a quick response. They dived from where they stood into the river, and swam towards the pair, who were about 30 yards from the seawall. Immediately they caught up to the old man. The three stabilized him, with one supporting his back and the other two holding him up from either side. However, the old man was unresponsive, but not unconscious. As the men made their way towards the seawall that stretched for blocks in each direction, Frank had an awful realization: With the water flowing a good eight feet below the lip of the wall and no ladder or dock in sight, there was no way out of the river. ”A rescue boat is on its way, “ someone yelled to them. The old man, who was six foot two and weighed around 260 pounds, was deadweight in his rescuers’ arms, which meant they could only use their legs to save themselves. They were almost out of energy at that point.

Henry Coulton sat on the bus and watched the miles go past. He was still hundreds of miles away from his destination and from the person who needed him. His wife, Delia, was in Los Angeles visiting her mother when she fell ill.
At first, Delia just told him that she had a stomachache. However, two days later, Henry became worried because he noticed that Delia was paler and thinner. ”You need to go to see a doctor now!”Henry insisted.
Later Delia went to the hospital and was informed that there was something wrong with her left lung. When Henry heard the bad news, he felt shocked because his wife never smoked. Although he didn’t understand the medical terms, all he remembered was the words “a sizeable tumor(肿瘤)”.
The doctors didn’t want to wait. The longer they waited, the higher the risk. They were operating immediately, so Henry left for Los Angeles hurriedly. He knew he wasn’t going to be there to hold Delia’s hand and that was what was hurting him the most. He looked out of the window so the other passengers wouldn’t see the tears pouring down his cheeks.
Suddenly, Henry’s phone rang. “Henry ” he heard Delia’s voice. “Baby, I’m going into the OR in a little while, so I want to hear your voice. . . ” Henry said, “I wish I were there, holding your hand. ”“I wish you were here, singing my favorite song, ” Delia replied. “But I can sing it now if you like. . . Then he got to his feet and held the phone up so the other passengers could see it. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sorry to interrupt your peace and quiet. Please be patient. My wife, Delia, is in the hospital and she’s about to go into surgery (手术), so I’m going to sing her favorite song. ” Then Henry started singing, “When you’re down and troubled, and you need some loving care. . . ”

Adler lived with his unemployed mother and a younger brother in a small house in Durango. Like other boys at his age, the golden-haired boy wanted to play with his friends and have fun, but fate had other plans. After observing what was happening in his house, the boy decided to do something for his family. He picked up his only toy, a ball, and left his house with a mission—to help his family.
Little Adler walked to the nearest store with his last toy in hand, hoping he could sell it. While the little boy was selling his toy at the street, a man with the TikTok name Ruben Cervantes spotted him. Curious, he approached Adler to see what happened to him.
With tears in his eyes the little one said, “I just want to sell my only toy, sir. Would you like it ” When Cervantes learned Adler was selling his toy to help his family, he asked, “How much is it ” Adler replied, “I don’t want money, sir I just want milk and bread for my family.”
At that moment, Cervantes was so moved While other children at his age were enjoying and living a carefree life, Adler was worrying about his home’s financial situation. Without hesitation, Cervantes took the ball from the boy, gave him a hug and said, “Don’t cry, my boy. I’ll keep your ball for now, hoping to play it with you one day.” Cervantes did buy milk and bread in exchange for his ball and sent him back home. The boy flashed a toothy smile and said, “Thank you so much, sir. I’m looking forward.”
Immediately Cervantes got home, he posted Adler’s story on TikTok. All the viewers were touched by his devotion to his family and expressed their willingness to help the poor family. For a month, piles of food and clothes were flooding into Cervantes’ home. Apparently, it’s time for him to pay a visit.

The Science of Happiness
Kate is a bright young woman with an intense focus on academics and a long-term goal of becoming a neuroscientist (神经系统科学家). Her path is charted very carefully each day according to schedule. She meets after school with the Brain Club, a group she started that discusses neuroscience and trades academic papers like baseball cards. It’s the kind of group you would never imagine in high school, which is mature beyond their years and led by their own initiative.
It would seem there was no room in Kate’s schedule for fun, let alone helping others. But then she found out about an elementary school hit hard by the pandemic, then inflation, and now a recession (衰退). It sits in the middle of a working-class neighborhood and most of parents were tired out by working physically demanding jobs from dawn to dark. Most families were doing the best but they could just put a few groceries on the table.
Halloween was approaching, and many of the families didn’t participate because they lacked costumes and couldn’t afford to give out candy themselves. So Kate called the headmaster of the elementary school. She was told the families wanted their kids to have fun on Halloween, but they also needed more books in the home.
So Kate went to work. She began with the Brain Club and then branched out to other clubs. They would sponsor a trick-or-treat event featuring games, candy and book giveaways. It was a huge organizational challenge—one that only a very organized person could handle. So Kate put her smarts to use. She arranged for groups of her fellows to decorate their cars and create games. She found a DJ and rounded up boxes of costumes for the kids. She even got the local police to decorate their cruiser (巡逻车). And she went to work getting kids books donated.

Chris and Paul were good friends and on the same school basketball team, The Lions. They loved basketball very much and were both huge fans of the NBA.After school, when they weren’t playing on the court which was next to their building, they were watching a basketball game on TV. Chris’s favourite player was LeBron James. Paul’s favourite player was Tyrone Bogues, although they actually agreed that they were both champions.
Bogues was only 1.6 metres tall, which made him the shortest player ever in the NBA.Guess what Paul was only 1.6 metres tall, too! Paul knew that being shorter than other players meant that he had to practise more. He did not miss a single practice and participated in every training. During all those hours of doing jump shots on his own, he used Bogues as his inspiration. Paul once said firmly, “If Bogues could make it, why not me ”
Their coach was not so sure. Paul had to try out many times just for making the team. He was still usually on the bench, being just a replacement, which was really tough on him. Everyone knew Paul had real skills, and was someone who worked really hard and had a strong desire to play for the team. Chris always comforted him and encouraged him, telling him not to give up. However, Paul didn’t get a chance.
This week, The Lions were playing against their main competitors, The Bears, a team whose record this season had been perfect. They hadn’t lost a single game. It would be a tough one.
Everyone of the Lions played to the best of their abilities. Suddenly, a player and Chris crashed into each other. Pain raced through Chirs’s body. His knee hurt badly. The team gathered around, looking worried. The last quarter was about to begin, and The Lions was behind by 10 points.

Zack joined our family two years ago. The first time I saw him in a caring center, he was sitting in a corner, lonely and nervous. When I got closer, he tried to avoid eye contact and forced a smile. I could read his struggles in his eyes. Indeed, Zack was different. He was a kid with inborn disorder that made it difficult to manage his anxiety. I gently put my arms around him. Unexpectedly, he responded by giving me a tighter hug. My heart melt. I couldn’t wait to drive Zack home immediately the adoption paper was done.
The life with us was new to Zack. Terrified of insects and always on alert(警戒的) for a storm rolling in, he remained housebound. One March afternoon, we held a family barbecue. Despite my best effort, Zack wouldn’t leave the house. I brought him a plate of food and he watched us from the window. I was upset that he couldn’t enjoy a few minutes of peace in the spring sun.
Anyway, Zack was a joy around, and we tried to meet all his special needs. We were worried that Zack was delayed at schoolwork and needed to attend a speech and language camp, but he refused to go.I begged, and finally bartered(交换).
“I’ll do it for a pet chicken,” he decided.
That’s when Valor, a hen with soft feathers, entered our lives in May. John, my husband, named her Valor, which meant “courage” in ancient English.
No one had expected how the chicken would make a difference, but it did. Once Valor arrived, Zack slowly began stepping out in order to be with her. In turn, we repaid her with treats of tomatoes and sunflower seeds. For some unknown reasons, Valor offered Zack peace and comfort and was content to keep him company wherever he went. To our excitement, Zack talked more and smiled often. He even turned to us with questions about raising pets, making John and me thrilled.

Last Thursday, my husband Robin and I invited some of our friends for dinner.
Just before I left work, Robin called me and said that he had to stay late at work, which meant that I had to prepare everything for the night on my own. Realizng that I didn’t have too much time, I could feel my anger rising as I drove to pick up Jason and Michael from school. After they got into the car, I informed them that we would stop on the halfway to buy something, and that they needed to help me tidy the house when we got home.
Both of the boys started complaining. I warned them that I was not in the mood to listen. They crossed their arms and became angry. For the next hour, I dragged them from one place to the next. The more I needed them to hurry, the more distracted (分心的) and silly they became. My patience was wearing thin.
Just as we finished our last task, the boys reminded me that we needed to stop at the pet store to pick up crickets (蟋蟀) for their pet lizards (蜥蜴).“You promised that you would buy crickets for us, and you shouldn’t break your promise,” Jason said. “Fine! But we need to be fast,”I replied impatiently, and then we raced to the pet shop.
Fifteen minutes later, we were back in the car with some new passengers: one hundred live crickets in a plastic bag. I pulled the car into the driveway and there was only forty-five minutes left to unpack the car, clean the house, and set the table before my guests arrived. How would I make it
After returning home, I started barking out orders, but the boys were pouring the crickets from the plastic bag into the box that they prepared and they obviously ignored my orders.
My anger swept over me, and I shouted at them to hurry up, but they didn’t listen.

In the coming month of October, it was my best friend’s birthday. I and other classmates in the school had planned a day out for her. We all decided to take her to a nearby picnic spot in the afternoon and give her a surprise party. Everybody contributed a little to the cake and snacks. After school, we took her to the picnic spot. She cut the cake and we all enjoyed the snacks. After everybody had eaten, we all decided to enjoy the boat ride.
It was a pleasant day. The lake was small but beautiful. We were all singing together and cheering up. In the clear blue water of the lake, we could see the colorful fishes swimming rapidly. There were also ducks adding to the beauty of the scene.

A few months ago, David, whose father was disabled while David was in high school, ran into an old woman with a slight disability in her leg in a supermarket near his office. He saw that it was difficult for her to take the things off the goods shelf, so he decided to help.
“Do you need a shopping partner, madam ” David walked to her and politely asked. The sweet old lady nodded with a smile, and he was happy, thinking that a little help wouldn’t hurt.
He spent about a quarter helping her take all the things on her shopping lists off and put them in her shopping cart. The old woman was very grateful and handed out a few dollars, which David refused to take. In the following week, he met the old lady at about the same time, and their weekly meetings became regular. Whenever he saw her in the supermarket every other week or two, he would give her a hand, which has become their usual routine (常规).

My mom saw the name, right, Mom ”
The old woman agreed, but the confused supermarket worker said nobody by that name worked there. “Did you fire him He was here last week, right ” the young man asked again. 参考答案:
1.Fortunately, two young men happened to swim by. “Help,” I managed to whisper. One of them grabbed my arm. The other grabbed his arm. Together they pulled me toward the shore. The lifeguard rushed into the water with his board. He tried to convince me that the water was shallow so that I could just stand. However, I shook my head. I was too exhausted to stand, much less walk. They laid me over the boar d. “You were caught in a tide,” the lifeguard said as the three of the man carried me onto the sand.
Chickie and Dom were waiting anxiously on the beach. They were scared when they saw me being carried out of the water. I showed my sincere gratitude to the two young men who saved me. And the lifeguard warned us to be careful while swimming and never swim alone. Chickie and Dom took care of me and made sure I was okay. It was a quiet reminder that one should always be careful and never underestimate the power of nature, even on a supposedly gentle day at the beach.

The headmaster said this was the happiest time for the kids. Parents were also excited. They showed gratitude to Kate and her fellows, with shining tears in their eyes. As for Kate, she took careful notes on how happiness affects people’s attitude toward life and learning. She also got a lot of hugs from little princesses and superheroes. Through this event, she taught us a lesson: when you take the time, you can make somebody’s world better.

Then someone recommended Paul, but he said Paul couldn’t play. Meanwhile, another player also suggested letting Paul have a try. Then, Paul asked the coach to let him try and promised that he wouldn’t let him down.
The coach agreed, “Paul, it’s your time to shine.” Paul jumped up and rushed onto the court. And clearly, all the extra hours that he’d spent practicing alone paid off. The other team couldn’t keep up with his energy and speed. He made shot after shot, and the crowd couldn’t stop clapping and cheering. When the game ended, his team had won by two points. The coach was surprised at Paul’s performance. He smiled at Paul and said he’d earned his place on the team.

Of course, we brought Zack, with his pet chicken Valor, to the barbecue in high spirits. Many friends who we hadn’t met before gathered together to participate in the barbecue. Everyone greeted each other with smiles on their faces. We got together with a few friends and we were ready to have barbecue.
When I suggested introducing our new friends, amazingly, Zack stood up. He said that he first wanted to introduce himself to everyone. Then he said loudly, “My name is Zack, and I’m glad to meet you. I used to have very few friends, maybe only this pet chicken. I want to make more friends, and I believe I can become good friends with you. Thank you!” What was even more surprising was that everyone applauded and cheered. This gave me great satisfaction, so I tightly held Zack in my arms and gave him a big hug.

8.One possible version:
The moment I turned round, I found crickets were jumping all over my kitchen. I screamed and jumped up onto a chair to get away from them. I could feel that I was about to start yelling in a way I had rarely done. Then, I realized that I had two choices: I could continue feeling angry, or I could let go. My two sweet boys were running around and screaming with laughter. Watching them capture the crickets, I felt as if time had slowed down, and I saw the situation clearly for the first time. How sweet their smile was!
Finally, I jumped off the chair and started catching crickets with my boys. It took us about fifteen minutes to get all the crickets into their box. Then my boys enthusiastically volunteered to help me prepare the dinner. With joint efforts, we made it in time and had an amazing dinner party. The experience that night is a constant reminder to me that I should never let anger keep me from enjoying life. When things go wrong, I tell myself that everything will be okay, because we do have the power to decide how we’re going to react to them.

Realizing what had happened, David went straight over. Seeing his approaching, the old woman was very happy and pointed at him saying, “This is the kind man. Every time I went shopping here, he always helped me take all the things on my shopping lists off the goods shelf.” David felt a little embarrassed and quickly apologized to her and the supermarket worker. “I’m really sorry for the misunderstanding because I wear the similar clothing and name tag,” he explained. Hearing what he said, the old woman’s gratitude was beyond expression. Who could think that it was a stanger who helped her many times!
Later, the news went around and a reporter from a television station interviewed him. When asked why he did this, David mentioned his disabled father, from whom he realized that life for the disabled was not easy. The old woman in the supermarket reminded him of his father, so he helped her without hesitation. It is true that kindness only takes a simple gesture, and results in a better quality of life for everyone who is touched by it.
