Oh no. Coach Cafferty just said my name. For that event. The two-hundred-metre breaststroke (蛙泳) for the coming meet! Not the backstroke (仰泳) I had wished and practiced for so long!
Beads of sweat popped out over my upper lip. Morgan pressed her elbow into my side, trying to offer me moral support. But it didn’t help. My stomach sank to my knees like a brick in water. Morgan tried to convince me it would be fine. “Maybe Coach has more confidence in you than you think. Or maybe Coach Cafferty just want to give the rest a laugh when I sink to the bottom of the pool,” I thought desperately. I walked towards Coach Cafferty and told her about my inability and my desire to quit this event. She frowned and asked if it was what I really wanted.
I hesitated. Placing her hand on my shoulder, she started smiling and encouraged me to push myself outside of my comfort zone.
The first practice was a disaster. I lost rhythm on my strokes. I messed up my turns. I even had to stop and catch my breath a few times. I felt everyone was laughing at me and my stomach twisted. How could I make it within just two weeks But once I dragged myself out of the water, exhausted and frustrated, Coach Cafferty thumbed up to me, saying I did really well and just needed more confidence in myself and more time to practice.
On the way back home, Morgan comforted me, “Dear, just ignore others. Race against yourself. Count your own strokes. Prove to yourself that you can do it.” With these words said to me almost every day, before or after each practice, something gradually changed: both how I swam the breaststroke and how I felt about the event as well as myself.
The meet finally came. I arrived at the pool hall, still a little bit worried. As each event clicked closer to mine, my knees shook. I bit my lip and looked out over the other swimmers. Morgan leaned forward. “Just swim your race. Remember, you can!”

When I was a kid, I was always eager to know what was inside the colorful boxes under the Christmas tree. But when that curiosity was satisfied beforehand, fun would be absent.
One Christmas Eve, my sister Tina and I decided to peek at our presents before our mom got home. Since Tina was older, and that put her in charge, she opened the first present while I was ordered to stand guard at the big picture window in our front room. I was to report any suspicious activity or person, namely our mother.
I was so excited that I could barely stand still. I couldn’t keep my eyes on the window very long, either. My head moved from the window to Tina and back to the window again. I felt like I was watching a Ping-Pong match.
“All right!” Tina shouted. She pulled out an empty jewelry box. “You know what that means, don’t you ”
I jumped up and down. “Yeah, it’s my turn!”
“No.” she said. “It means that there must be some jewelry under here.” I watched my sister search through the presents under the tree trying to find one she thought was small enough to be a necklace or earrings
“Hey, that’s not fair!” I protested, stomping my foot
“Are you watching for mom ” was all that she said. I couldn’t do anything except stand guard as she opened present after present. Finally, when she had finished wrapping her last present back up, we traded places.
My heart hammered so hard that it felt like my chest was moving in and out. Tina reminded me to be careful so I wouldn’t tear the wrapping paper.
After unwrapping a few presents, I found it faster to open one end of a present and peek inside. “Cool! Mom and Dad got me headphones (耳机) for my stereo!” I exclaimed as I pulled them out of the box.

I live with my husband, Tyrone, in San Luis Obispo, California, about three miles from the beach. Every few years, the humpback whales come into the bay for a few days while migrating. November 2020 was one of those times, so we took out our yellow double kayak (皮艇) to watch the wildlife. We paddled (用桨划船) out the sea and saw seals, dolphins, and about 20 whales feeding on silverfish. We were in amazement watching these graceful giant creatures — each one about 50 feet long—spray through their blowholes.
At the time, my friend Liz was staying with us. The next day, I asked her if she wanted to go out on the water to see them. With no such experience, she refused. “There’s nothing to worry about,” I assured her. “The boat is stable, and we can turn back anytime.” Finally, she agreed to join me. I didn’t want her to miss this great experience and regret it later.
At 8:30 the following morning when we got out on the water, there were already about 15 other kayakers and surfers in the bay. After a half-hour, we had our first whale sighting: two humpbacks swimming toward us. How amazing to be that close to a creature that size, I thought, as the whales dipped under the waterline.
When the whales went down, they left what looked like oil on the water. I figured if we paddled toward that spot, we’d be safe from the whales, since they’d just left. We followed them at a distance—or what I thought was a distance. Suddenly, a tightly packed group of silverfish started jumping out of the water into our kayak. Oh no! We were being attacked.

Mary waited anxiously for her turn in the empty dressing room. Never had she been so nervous before. This competition was of great importance to her comeback. “If I can win today,” she said to herself, “I can dance on the national stage next month.” Three months ago, her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.
“Hi, Mary,” in rushed her friend Jessica. “How is your arm Is it going to influence your performance ”
“I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match.” said Mary with a determined look.
“Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well-matched e on!”
After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin (旋转). “If I don’t try harder, I won’t grasp this chance.” She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight ” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.
A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi, I’m Linda. I am the next one to you!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight.” Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, “Oh, God, I can’t find my music tape!” Linda searched her bag but in vain (徒劳). “It may be missing on the way.” With these words, she then rushed out.

“Good morning, everybody,” Mrs. Harris greeted the students as she entered the music room. The 65-year-old music teacher had a reputation for being strict in class, despite music seeming like a light subject. But Mrs. Harris took her job seriously, and teaching music was a massive passion for her.
She walked to the piano and started leading the students into a song to get them warmed up. This semester, she was going to teach them about composition and songwriting. Suddenly, one student raised her hand.
“Mrs. Harris, what do you like to listen to in your leisure time ” she asked curiously.
“I bet she listens to Beethoven and Tchaikovsky at home,” another student said.
“But I actually like a lot of pop music, and even some of the things you, young people, listen to nowadays. But I must admit that I listen to a lot of old songs, especially Paul McCartney,” Mrs. Harris answered, smiling at the kids.
Soon enough, the students got used to her, and some started taking her lessons more seriously. Others still liked to be playful, but she wasn’t truly mad at them.
However, the worst was yet to happen. Her husband suddenly died in the middle of the school year, and she didn’t have the heart to go to work. Fortunately, the school was accommodating. They gave her some well-deserved time off.
At first, she was like a zombie(迟钝无生气的人) at home, lying in bed all day. She didn’t even listen to music anymore. But when her daughter encouraged her to start playing tunes once again, she began to play again until she decided to return to school.
She called the headmaster, letting him know she was ready to get back to normal, even if the love of her life was gone.
“Good morning, everyone,” she began upon entering the classroom for the first time since her husband’s death. She placed her things on her desk and started to speak again. “Before we begin, I want to apologize…”

Wilson was always living with his beloved dog, Jack, which was such an energetic six-year-old collie (牧羊犬) that he would meet him every day at the trolley (电车) station when Wilson returned from work. This was a routine that had begun when Jack was a pup (小狗). The dog knew the route to and from the station like the back of his paw-and following that route was the highlight of his day.
Then one day Wilson had to change his job and had to move to California. He thought it best to leave Jack at his home in Philadephia with Alice, a closest relative. He explained all this to the dog upon leaving and told him that they both would have to adjust to their respective new homes.
But Jack didn’t want a new home. He would not stay with the family he had been left with. He returned to Wilson’s old house, even though it was boarded up, and there he passed his lonely days beside an abandoned chair in the porch. But every evening, tail wagging, he trotted (小跑) off to the trolley station.
For as long as Jack had been in the world, Wilson had always taken the same trolley home from work, and Jack had been there to greet him. But evening after evening, there was no sign of the devoted dog’s master. Confused and sad, he would return alone to the deserted house.
The dog’s depression grew. He refused the food left for him, and as the days passed, he became thinner and thinner and his ribs (肋骨) could be seen even through his thick blond coat. But every evening, ever hopeful, he’d go to the station to meet the trolley. And every evening, he would return to the porch more depressed than before. No one knows why Jack’s new family didn’t contact Wilson.

I was terrified of heights. Of course, it was not really a fear of being in a high place. Rather, it was the view of a long way to fall, of rocks far below me and no firm wall between me and the edge. My sense of security was screamingly absent.I could rely only on my own sure-footedness.
Despite my fear, two summers ago I somehow found myself climbing to a high place, while quaking inside and out. Most of our high school had come along on a day trip to the Boquerón, a beautiful and pleasant spot in the foothills of Peru. Its chief attraction is the main waterfall, about 100 feet high, that thunders into a crystal clear pool feeding the Aguaytia River. All around the pool and on down to the rushing river are rocks large and small. The beach is strewn (布满) with rocks. On both sides of the fall, the jungle stretches to meet it, rising parallel to it on a gentler slope.
After eating our lunches, many of us wanted to make the climb to an area above it. We knew others had done so on previous trips. A few guys went first to make sure they were on the right path. But after they left, my group of seven decided to go ahead without waiting for them to return. I suspected we were going the wrong way, but I kept silent, figuring that the others knew better. We went along the base of the hill until we reached the climb. It stopped me in my tracks.
The climb rose steeply above us. Along the right edge, the jungle hugged the rocks; passage through its trees seemed unlikely to be achieved. The majority of my view was filled with rocks. Peering back down toward the river, I saw a steep slope of rocks all the way to the water. All I could think about was how far it would be to fall.

“Dad, are you sure there will be a bar of chocolate ” I asked, lining up with Dad and Uncle John near the back of many runners in Los Angeles. My first marathon. It was pouring rain, my legs were cold, and I was wishing I hadn’t been too nervous to eat a bigger breakfast.
“There were tables of chocolate bars every mile at my last marathon,” Dad said.
Suddenly everyone around us started moving. Way up ahead I saw smoke from the cannon (手枪). Our marathon started.
“You go on ahead,” Dad said, panting. “I’ll see you at the end.”
Uncle John and I zigzagged through the runners. Soon Dad was way behind. We reached mile 5, but I still hadn’t seen a chocolate bar anywhere. Instead, the streets were lined with fast-food places. I smelled the food as I ran — doughnuts, hamburgers, fries.
By mile 8, I was starving. How I wished I’d eaten six pieces of toast, eggs, bacon, ... It was raining so hard. My hands stung from the cold.
On the balconies people yelled and waved to us. At mile 10, I took a power gel (能量胶) out of my pocket and tried to open it, but my hands were so cold as if they had been frozen into fists. When I rounded the corner, I saw my aunt and my little brother cheering for us. I wanted to stop and talk, but I couldn’t get out of the flow of runners. The road ahead was yellow. Thousands of banana skins everywhere. Food at last! I grabbed a banana and wolfed it down.
Mile 15. I looked down at my feet and watched them run across the stars. There were tables full of power gels. I took one and tore it open. My hands had come unfrozen. I squeezed the packet and filled my mouth with sweet stuff. Chocolate would taste better.

Michael saw the trouble coming from all the way at the end of the school hallway. There standing by the stairs was Tom, the school bully, who enjoyed taunting (嘲讽) anyone he felt like at any moment. He was tall and strong, so few of the students who were picked on were willing to stand up to him and defend themselves. Michael was one of them.
When they met in the middle of the hallway, Tom walked directly toward Michael, stopped abruptly and snapped at Michael, “Hey, let me see those books!” A group of students watched as Michael held out the books he was carrying, trying not to tremble to show how nervous he was. Tom grabbed a math book, looked inside for a second, and then pushed the book at Michael, who dropped all the books he held. “Hey, those books are school belongings,” Tom barked, “so don’t let them fall to the floor!” Then he walked away, laughing loudly.
Michael’s cheeks turned red. Suddenly a hand appeared beside Michael and picked up a book as it slid away. Michael turned around and saw that it was Ramon, the school’s star baseball player. He couldn’t believe that Ramon was stopping to help him, as they had hardly spoken to each other.
“Thanks,” Michael sighed with relief. “It’s so confusing. I don’t know what his problem is,” Ramon said. “You need to find a way to end this conflict with Tom.” Ramon continued, “My grandmother used to tell me whenever I had a problem with someone, ‘You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.’”
Looking puzzled, Michael asked what it meant. “It means that being kind to your enemies may be more effective than being angry at them,” Ramon explained.
That night, Michael thought about the advice that Ramon had given him. It sounded like a good plan, but deep down Michael wasn’t very confident that it would actually work with Tom.

This new little stepsister is getting on my nerves. She won’t stop talking. What was Dad trying to prove with this family vacation We can’t instantly become the ideal family. I just became a teenager, and Christina is only 8 years old.
Dad and I finished putting up the large tent. Then I walked back to the car for my backpack, only to knock a pink one to the ground. Before I could pick it up, Christina appeared. “Why’d you throw my stuff on the ground ” she roared.
After lunch, Dad suggested I take Christina to see the sequoia pines (红杉松树), circling on the map where giant sequoias were.
I jammed the map into my pocket and then set off. When I glanced back at Christina, all I saw was a pink cap. I shook my head. Dad and my new stepmom were crazy if they thought we’d instantly bond. I was not ready to be a big brother.
As we walked the trail, the forest canopy (树冠) became thicker, blocking out direct sunlight, making the temperature drop slightly.
“You warm enough ” I asked. She nodded but didn’t look at me. I noticed her hands had got completely covered with the sap (汁液) of a plant. I took a hand wipe from my pack and wiped her hands.
Reaching a small hill, we climbed up it. Sunshine filled the meadow (草地) below. I could see the tops of sequoia pines popping out above the forest on the other side. I pointed them out excitedly to Christina and finally saw a smile light her face.
“Come on, Sean!” She grabbed my hand and pulled me down into the meadow. Then I saw it, sitting on a rock in the middle of the field: a brown-colored bear cub (幼熊). Cute as it seemed, I knew it was dangerous.

Tears filled her eyes as they finished the song, and she had to take a seat to take it all in. (84 words)

7.My tense thoughts were interrupted by the realization that my friends were already beginning to climb! My anxiety increased as I watched them. “Do I turn back My whole being shouted,” “Yes!” “Will I regret it later I really want to get to the top, but...” I voiced my uncertainties to my friends. They dismissed my fears and encouraged me to stick it out. Questioning my own ability, I decided at least to attempt the climb. I chose a path that seemed easiest with my friends ahead of me. When the “path” led up to an extremely narrow area, the difficulties increased, with scary spots one after another. My breathing sped up, and my heart pounded even faster, growing loud in my ears.
My friends kept right on climbing but they did not forget me. Someone was always behind me to help hold my feet steady when necessary, while someone else was ahead to offer a hand up. I trusted them more than myself. With friends supporting me by words and actions, I slowly gained ground. Finally we came to the toughest place. Once again I shrank when I peered back at the steep slope of rocks. “You can make it! We won’t let you fall.” My friends’ assurances gave me the strength to go on. When my feet made contact with the solid rock on the top, I heaved a huge sigh of relief. I could feel all the fear draining out of me. I never felt so alive, and so thankful for my friends and that life.

I instructed Christina to stay close to me and hold my hand firmly. “Don’t move suddenly or make any loud noises,” I whispered to her. “We need to stay calm and slowly back away.” Christina nodded, her eyes wide with fear. The bear cub seemed to have no interest in us and continued playing on the rock. We slowly made our way back to the trial, making sure to keep an eye on the cub. Once we were a safe distance away, I let out a sign of relief. “Wow, did you see that ” Christina exclaimed, a smile returning to her face. “That bear cub was so cute!” “Yeah, but we need to remember that they’re still wild animals and can be dangerous,” I reminded her. “We should always keep a safe distance.”
Keeping a tight hold on her hand, we walked on along the trail marked on our map. Christina chattered away, telling me all about her favorite animals and what she wanted to be when she grew up. As we walked, I found myself starting to enjoy her company. Maybe this family vacation wasn’t such a bad idea after all. As we continued on the trial, I made a mental note to be more patient with Christina and try to bond with her more during our time together.
