The Genting snow Park in the Winter Olympics witnessed the greatest redemption story in its history. Lindsey Jacobellis, known for falling on the penultimate jump during the Turin 2006 Olympics board cross final, finally won a gold medal in her fifth Olympics at the age of 36. Her gold in the snowboard cross was the United States' first of these Games. She admitted that without her mistake in 2006, she may not have won gold in Beijing. Her sense of competitiveness helped her banish 2006 from her mind. She became the oldest Olympic medallist in any snowboarding event.
Charlotte Bankes, Britain's supposed banker for the Games, suffered a quarter-final exit in the snowboard cross. Bankes was the 2021 world crown winner but lost speed when she skidded wide on a turn. Britain still had no medals after five days of these Games, but the UK Sport chair, Katherine Grainger, said it was too early to panic. UK Sport had set a target of between three and seven medals at the Games. Grainger had hopes for the men's and women's curling teams and more on the snow. She revealed that at Pyeongchang, it was day seven before they saw a medal, so they were not panicking yet.
