János Kend was a shoemaker, living in the city of Pest. He was left alone with nine children after his wife passed away.
On Christmas Eve, János delivered shoes to customers and walked home late. Seeing the colorful candies and toys in the stores and long lines outside the restaurants, Janos couldn't help thinking: Maybe I should buy something. For all nine That would be a lot.
He decided to give his children a special gift.
“Come here, children!” János called when he got home. “Today is Christmas. No more work tonight! Let me teach you a nice song.” The children cheered loudly, almost turning the house upside down!
“Now sing with me.” János began to sing. The singing was nice and light, and the children were immediately attracted. That was a great pleasure when all sang together. On this sweet night, the beautiful song flew, again and again…
The singing annoyed the rich man who lived upstairs by himself, with nine rooms. At the moment, he was smoking, bored. When the Janos sang for the umpteenth(第无数次的) time, he couldn't stand and went down.
He would have been angry, but changed his mind when he saw so many lovely children. He asked János to give him one child and promised to make the child a rich man. János's eyes widened in surprise.
“My children could have a better life! Why refuse Who can I choose ” He murmured(低语), “Ferencke: he has already helped me make shoes; Sándorka: this is a girl, he doesn't need a girl; Palika: he was born at the cost of his mother's life...”
Poor János, with trembling(发抖) lips, almost cried, “Well, you bastards! Who wants to live in a big house and eat good food, step forward.” The children all hid from the man behind their father. János hugged them tightly, kissed them one by one and cried, “No, sir! I can't do that!”
The rich man didn't insist, but gave them 1000 Pengos and ordered, “Take it, and, for this sacrifice(牺牲,供奉), stop singing.”
János stared at the huge amount of money which he had never seen. He fearfully took it and locked the money in his box with a mixed feeling. No one spoke and the room was in silence.
Then János started making shoes, humming the song without realising it. Weak voices seemed to answer. He looked up, seeing the children, with their bright eyes hopefully, also humming softly around him. Suddenly, he made up his mind. He opened the box and took out the money…

I don't have much work to do around the house. All I have to do is mind my elder brother Raymond. Many people call him my little brother because he's not quite right. Many smart mouths get lots to say that. Whenever this time, I knock them down even if I'm a little girl. And if things get too rough, I run. As anybody can tell you, I'm the fastest thing on two feet.
In my neighborhood, there's a May Day celebration including a race in the park every year. This year I will take part in the fifty-yard race. Everyone has confidence in me, except Gretchen, who has put out the tale that she's going to win the first-place medal.
Before the race, I take a walk on Broadway so I can practice my breathing exercises, and I've got Raymond walking on the inside of me, because he plays like he's a circus performer. Or sometimes he runs across the traffic. I don't shame on Raymond. It's OK so long as he doesn't run me over or interrupt my exercises, which I have to do because I'm serious about my running. Finally comes the race.
After putting Raymond in the swings, I see Gretchen at the starting line, kicking her legs. As I get into place, I notice Raymond, on the other side of the fence, is bending down with his fingers on the ground just like he knows what he's doing. The gun goes off! I am off and weightless, flying past the other runners, and the world is quiet. I glance to my left. There is no one. To the right, a blurred Gretchen. And not far away is Raymond, yelling at me excitedly and running with his arms down to his side. It's the first time I’ve ever seen that. I almost stop to watch him. But the white ribbon is bouncing toward me and I tear past it, in the first place.
Raymond starts climbing up the fence. Watching how smoothly he climbs and remembering how he watched running before, it occurs to me that Raymond will make a very fine runner. Anyway, I’ve got lots of medals. But what has Raymond got to call his own
I stand there with my new plan, laughing as Raymond runs toward me in his own style.

This year my mom lost her job, and I knew Christmas would be different. It had been just Mom and I for a long time, and we would be worse.
My best friend, Becky and I had gone to see The Nutcracker together every year before, but not this year. Going to the ballet(芭蕾舞团) was my favorite holiday tradition. I loved the dancing, the costumes, and especially the music. I worried that it wouldn't feel like Christmas without The Nutcracker.
The week before Christmas, Mom and I went to Hauser Farm. We went there to find our Christmas tree every year. She pretended to check the tree for half an hour, but I knew shewas checking the price tag.
“I don't think they're quite right,” Mom said. “How about skipping the tree this year ”
“Sure.”I smiled for Mom. She smiled back, but I could tell she was feeling bad.
The ballet was my favorite thing about Christmas, but the tree was my mom's favorite. She loved pine—the deep green, the rich smell, and the sticky sap(汁水).
Christmas Eve arrived, and it wastime for another tradition. Every year, we drove around to see Christmas light displays.
Mom went downstairs to the car first and she started the engine. As soon as I got into the car, I heard the opening overture(前奏曲) from The Nutcracker.
“You got The Nutcracker music for me For our drive ” I asked.
“Yes, I did.”she answered, grinning.
A light snow began to fall, and the lights seemed to shine extra brightly. The Nutcracker music made everything feel magical.
But for me, I also had a surprise for Mom! Before we went home, I directed Mom on and stopped the car just outside Hauser Farm.
“Sweetie,” Mom said, “①I don't think there will be any trees left.Besides, we don't have…”
“I know,” I said. “But I called Mr. Hauser, and he said this was OK.”
Finally, we stopped beside a field of new trees, next year's Christmas trees. Outside thecar, the air smelled of pine.
“②We don't have just one tree this year, but we have a whole field.” I said.
Mom put her arm around me and kissed my forehead. “So, this is an evergreen Christmas for us. Thank you.”
③We opened the car windows and cranked(转动曲柄)up The Nutcracker. We walked and danced happily, looking and smelling and touching until our gloves were sticky with sap.
④We hugged each other tightly in the field. Tears filled our eyes…

30.Why were the writer and her mom’s eyes filled with tears at last (请用约40词左右回答)
答案:27-29 BDB
30. They were moved by each other’s surprises and love. They didn’t have enough money and couldn’t have what they wanted for Christmas, but the writer’s mother prepared her favourite song while the writer took her mother to the field of Christmas trees. That’s the true meaning of Christmas-deep love and understanding from family members.

This was our last trip before high school. I had been looking forward to it for weeks. But at the roller coaster, my stomach felt too tight to say anything at all.
The big girl beside us was Tasha, my best friend Dan’s sister. We came here in her car. She was a singer. She was fantastic on the stage. Just the image of her up there made me think she was so cool.
Our roller coaster car pulled up, and my friends rushed forward, I felt my legs couldn’t move. All I could think about was the roller coaster might fly off into the sky.
Without a word, I turned, ran out of the line. I knew what people were saying about me, but I didn’t care. I just kept moving past the crowd, found a bench near the bathrooms to sit down and put my head in my hands.
“Hey! Are you okay ” I looked up. It was Tasha!
“Oh, uh, yeah, I just started feeling, um, sick.” I responded.
“You know, it’s okay if you were scared. Everyone gets scared.” She said.
“You don’t.” I said in a low voice. “I’ve seen you on that stage. You were fearless.”
“I’m glad it looks like I’m not scared!” Tasha smiled. “But that’s not true. I get really scared and nervous before I perform.”
Before I noticed she was on the bench by my side, her words moved on.

“Yeah, it is. And I want to be able to look back and remember having fun with my friends. I don’t want to remember running away and sitting alone by the bathrooms.”
