Blind people can lead normal lives and do most of the things that perfectly healthy people can do, but one would imagine that riding a skateboard (滑板) isn’t one of them. Well, a 20-year-old blind skateboarder has demonstrated it is wrong.
Known as The Blind Rider, Marcelo Lusardi lost his sight completely two years ago because of his serious illness. He was sad as he couldn’t imagine living without sight. Luckily, his father pushed him harder instead of giving up on him. Finally, Marcelo decided to go to the skate park where he used to play with his friends, and try out new tricks. Only this time, he had to use a cane (手杖) just to find his way to the park, so he thought it was impossible to skate again.
After a reunion with his skateboarding friends, with their encouragement Marcelo found the courage to skate again, but learning to skate blind was completely different. He must get used to his environment before skating or performing a trick, and sound helps him a lot as well.
With the help of his friends and after learning to use his other senses, Marcelo not only learned to ride the skateboard again but also perform tricks that not many people with perfect sight can do.
Marcelo said, “People sometimes have problems and think that it is the end of the world, but in the end you can solve these problems. Everything has a solution in life. Look at me. I was skating, and then I went blind. Now I’m skating again — not as well as before, obviously, but I can still do it and leave people with their mouths open.”
Marcelo still hopes that one day someone will invent medicine for his illness, and he will get his sight again, but in the meantime, he is making the best of his situation and encouraging people at the same time.
