Very few of us become fluent in another language by learning it in high school.
I went to university and then moved across the country to seek a 1 job, married and raised children. I made an effort to keep the little bit of French I learned in school, but eventually I realised that this was really 2 . I was quite aware that new languages are best learned when young, and that our abilities in that regard decline with 3 .
However, just before my 50th birthday, I 4 French classes. After I was tested to see which group I belonged to, I was placed at almost the introductory level. When I looked around at my first class, I was 5 that many of the students were learning French as a third, fourth or even fifth language.
Contrary to my 6 that learning a new language was impossibly difficult, there were people who learned new languages as a matter of course. While I had always thought of myself as a 7 learner, that was no longer the case. I 8 new vocabulary rather slowly. What I learned one week ago seemed to 9 as soon as I learned the new ones. I had to look up the same words and language structures over and over. Now, after several years of learning, I can listen to the news in French and 10 90% of it on the first try, read a novel if the language isn’t too 11 and hold up my end of a conversation if it doesn’t go too fast. I’ve learned so much beyond grammar and vocabulary. I’ve met people from around the world and all walks of life who have the 12 to make fools of themselves in order to learn something new. I’ve been taught by patient and inspirational teachers from many corners of the world. Listening to the news as it is 13 to the people of France, I have a renewed understanding of how something can look 14 different from another viewpoint. I’ve learned that a language is not just a set of words, but a way of thinking. But most of all, I’ve learned that it is never too 15 to learn something new.

UNIT 1 TEENAGE LIFE
1 阅读短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D.C., students are hard at work outdoors. In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting vegetables for the weekend’s market.
Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am until 2 pm with City Blossoms, a nonprofit that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviours home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.
City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged and boost academics. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed or learning the science of how plants grow.
For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their perceptions of where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardised tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation conducted by PEER Associates.

One of the most powerful forms of human communications is praise. Effective praise can raise someone’s performance. It can greatly change someone’s self-image, or even their life. 1 Master a few basic concepts, and you can give truly effective praise every time.
Phase 1: Basic Praise
Your praise should always include these three elements: the name of the person you are praising, the specific thing you saw them do, and sincerity.
Addressing a person by their name conveys respect. 2 And, if you address someone by the name, it means you’ve noticed the person. One of the great desires of the human soul is to be noticed.
3 As you start to praise more, you will frequently encounter people resisting your praise—they will say “it was nothing” or “I was just doing my job”. And maybe, deep down, they don’t think they deserve praise. If you are extremely specific, you can avoid that resistance and earn their trust.
Phase 2: Advanced Praise
4 You can ask yourself this question:“What is the positive character quality that must exist inside that person for them to have exhibited this behaviour ” A positive character trait can be anything from honesty to compassion, from being hard-working to having a positive attitude, from being customer-focused to being a team player. 5 For example:“Hey Jim, I was really impressed with you yesterday—I noticed at three o’clock you had that long list of orders to handle, and when I was back at four, you had finished all of them. That was some great work—you were really focused. I like being on the team with somebody who has your kind of focus.”
(2021·河南安阳第三次模拟考试)
A.If your praise is vague, it can sound insincere.
B.At the very least, it can make their day better.
C.You’ve shown the evidence, and you’re speaking with sincerity.
D.The sweetest word in most people’s ears is the sound of their own name.
E.Once you have identified the positive character trait, add it to the end of your praise.
F.Before giving your praise, think about the positive character quality behind the behaviour.
G.If you don’t give someone enough praise that they truly think they deserve, they can feel worse.

My great-grandfather, my grandfather and my father are farmers, and so are all my family. My father has a fixed idea that I would become a farmer too. Although I respect him and am indeed skilled at doing some farm work, I don’t agree that I should automatically follow in my father’s footsteps.
When I was a teenager, my father happened to take me to an airport which belonged to one of his friends. It was the first time I had seen an aeroplane in real life. Knowing that I had never been on board, my father’s friend Tom offered me an opportunity to fly with him in his small aeroplane. I quickly accepted his offer! When we took off, I felt nervous but thrilled. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever felt. I was just enjoying it. I assumed being a pilot would be the most awesome thing in the whole world. From that day a thought crept into my mind that I wanted to become a pilot, but I doubted whether my father would support me. After all, it was a totally different path from what he had planned for me. Therefore, I put the thought to the back of my mind, because I knew he would still insist on holding onto his previous idea.
Anyway, besides helping my father on the farm, I would frequently visit Tom’s airport. Gradually, I got familiar with every button and switch on the aircraft and I learnt a lot about planes, such as how to fill the plane with fuel, how to check the engines and so on. But what I had learnt just left me wanting more, so I decided to go to college to become a professional pilot.

The highlight of my journey was to be Paris, the city I’d always wanted to see. But now I was frightened to travel alone. I steeled myself and went anyway. I arrived at the train station in Paris panicked. Pulling my red suitcase behind me, I was pushed by sweaty travellers. On my first Metro ride, I gave a clumsy pickpocket a look, and he let go of my purse. At my stop, I carried my heavy suitcase up the steep stairs and froze in confusion. Somewhere in this confusing city my hotel was hidden, but suddenly I couldn’t read my own directions. I stopped two people. Both who had that Parisian face said, “Yes, I speak English, but you’ll have to struggle with your French if you want to talk to me.”
When I finally found the hotel, my heart was pounding. Then I saw my room. I couldn’t stay, could I The wallpaper looked like it had been through a fire. The bathroom was down the hall, and the window looked out onto the brick wall of another building. Welcome to Paris. It was my third week away from home and my kids, and I had arrived in the most romantic city in the world alone. Alone, lonely, and very scared.
The most important thing I did in Paris happened at that moment. I knew that if I didn’t go out, right then, and find a place to have dinner, I would hide in this place my entire time in Paris. So I went out. Evening in Paris was light and warm. I walked along a winding path, listening to birds sing and watching children float toy sailboats in a huge fountain. Paris was beautiful. And I was here alone but suddenly not lonely. Overcoming my fear made me feel free, not abandoned.
During my week’s stay in Paris I did everything there, and it was the greatest week of my European vacation. I returned home as a believer in the healing power of solitary travel. Travelling alone makes up for its problems by building self-reliance and confidence. Certainly Paris became my metaphor for addressing life’s challenges on my own. Now when I meet an obstacle I just say to myself: If I can go to Paris, I can go anywhere.

UNIT 3 SPORTS AND FITNESS
1 阅读短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
The latest sports craze is not even a sport. According to a recent article, “e-sports” are attracting a large number of the audience.
In e-sports, players and teams compete in popular video computer games such as Dota 2 and Overwatch. Fans fill arenas to watch the action live on huge television screens.
The games keep kids playing against each other while sitting on a sofa at home. The International, a major competition for players of Dota 2, awarded $24 million in prizes, with the winner taking home almost $11 million. A recent e-sports competition attracted more than 80,000 fans to the Olympic Stadium in Beijing, China.
I have to admit that I am not a big fan of computer games. I know that some games can be educational, but I think too many kids spend too much time sitting in front of a screen shooting space aliens. I think it would be better if kids spent more time reading or playing real sports such as basketball, baseball and soccer.
And please don’t tell me that competitive gaming is real sport because it requires hand-eye coordination. According to my American Heritage Dictionary, a sport is “an activity involving physical effort and skill”. I don’t think anyone works up much of a sweat playing video games.
Too often, regular sports send kids a kind of petition starts early, when lots of kids are not ready for the ups and downs of games. Tryouts and travel teams come next, giving too many kids the message they are “not good” at sports. So lots of kids quit sports and start playing more video games.
Maybe everyone in youth, including coaches, parents and kids, should think more about the advantages of real sports.

UNIT 4 NATURAL DISASTERS
1 阅读短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
“Like a monster, it destroys everything.” That’s how one school girl described a tsunami(海啸).
On Dec. 26, 2004, a magnitude-9.1 earthquake in Indonesia set off a massive tsunami. It killed more than 230,000 people across four countries and cost an estimated $10 billion in damage.
Nov.5 is World Tsunami Awareness Day and at the United Nations Wednesday, disaster risk reduction was high on the agenda.
“What I can tell you is that the tsunami wave cannot be stopped,” said Bulgarian U.N. Ambassador Georgi Velikov Panayotov. He was on vacation in Thailand in 2004 and survived the tsunami. “What we can do is build early warning systems and, of course, educate the population about the damaging power of the tsunami wave,” he said.
On March 11, 2011, a magnitude-9 earthquake rocked northeastern Japan triggering a fierce tsunami that also damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, south of Sendai.
“When the big earthquake hit Japan in 2011, people thought that we were prepared for it,” said Japan’s U.N. Ambassador Koro Bessho. “It caused severe damage. We had dams; we had drills. However, we had been counting on something that hits every 100 years and the earthquake was of the size of possibly every 500 years or thousand years,” he said.
These two events sent the countries of the region into overdrive to review and improve disaster preparedness. In 2015 the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction was born. It aims to help create a better understanding of disaster risk and improve preparedness for an effective response.
Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands which are disaster-prone(易受灾地区). Willem Rampangilei, head of the Disaster Management Agency of Indonesia, said his government now has plans for every disaster-prone city.
Countries at risk are also expanding their education programmes. Children from an early age are taught how to react in case of a tsunami and then go with their classmates to higher ground away from coastal areas to avoid the walls of water the tsunami triggers.
1.What does Georgi Velikov Panayotov mainly talk about

B.Ways for humans to face a tsunami.
C.His suffering in the 2004 tsunami.

A.It caused a fierce tsunami.
B.It destroyed a nuclear plant.
C.The size was beyond expectation.
D.There was no effective defense system.
3.What common belief pushed different countries to take action to face a coming tsunami
A.Children should be protected by all means.
B.The improvement of preparedness can reduce damage.
C.Proper response in case of a tsunami can save one’s life.
D.Stronger measures should be taken in disaster-prone areas.

“I don’t have a net You don’t have a net. Your father and mother don’t have a net,” I yelled, firing at him with what I thought was a hurt. I just had to make him understand that I had plenty of nets. Eric was speechless. He admitted that indeed, he and his family had neither a tennis court nor a net, but he seemed unable to make sense of my reaction to this shortcoming.
As a new arrival to the United States, armed with limited English words, I had thought that “nets” meant “manners”. Eric didn’t want to play with me because I lacked good manners. It was only after I stormed home that my brother, who had been in America for a decade, explained where I had gone wrong.
Language barriers are the most common communication barriers. Even when we speak the same language, understanding and being understood can be difficult, not to mention communicating in a foreign language. And confusion and amusement follows—a phenomenon that is common in sitcoms(情景喜剧). For example, in a 1970s British sitcom, a foreign student says “squeeze(捏) me”, rather than “excuse me”, to his young principal.
That’s the thing with languages. Though the languages are technically the same, the meanings, implications and interpretations of words are different. No two people really speak the same one. But in order to be understood, we should be willing to use more words and expressions and have the patience to find out more about what is happening to get a whole picture of the situation.

Maybe you live in places where English is not the main language. When you speak, your speech might be slower than you would like. This is because your mind is still translating things from your first language into English, which can also sound unnatural. 1 It is not very difficult, but it does take conscious effort and practice.
Think in single words.
Charles Thomas has taught English to Union members, children and teenagers for over 10 years. He tells his students to name the things that they see around them, wherever they are. 2
Think in sentences.
For example, if you are sitting in a park, you can tell yourself things like, “It’s such a beautiful day” and “People are playing sports with their friends.” 3
Think in conversation.
This is a great way to practice what you might say in a real conversation. For example, let’s say the imaginary person asks you a question like, “What did you think of the talk show last night ” 4 Imagine the conversation and practice it in your head. You can do this out loud or in silence.
5
“When you’re doing it every day, over and over again, little by little, that’s the key. Because when you make things a habit, it just pops up into your mind without thinking and then, before you know it, really, you’re thinking in English,” Thomas says.

3.B 推理判断题。根据第七段内容可知,这两起事件促使该地区各国加紧审查和改进防灾准备工作。2015年,仙台减少灾害风险框架诞生,目的是帮助人们更好地了解灾害风险,改进有效应对的准备工作。根据第八段中的“…said his government now has plans for every disaster-prone city.”

3 One possible version:
Dear friends,
As we can see, there is more and more rubbish in the ocean. Besides, air pollution is still serious.
In my view, we should take action to reduce pollution. Firstly, laws must be made to forbid people from throwing rubbish at will, which may help the ocean become clean soon. What’s more, we should plant more trees to get more fresh air. Last but not least, we should increase the awareness of protecting the environment. Only by doing so can pollution problems be greatly eased.
Yours,
Li Hua
