23年高考英语外刊阅读理解训练——控制情绪
——改编自Ways of stopping anger and hostility
Anger and Hostility can harm your health. According to a recent study, anger can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, and depression. However, it is entirely possible to dial down angry thinking and behavior. So, if you always feel at war with the people around you, here are some tips to help you handle your anger.

1. Take an exercise break
When you feel like you are about to blow your top, the best thing to do is to take an exercise break. You can go for a walk, a run or hit the gym. Exercise releases endorphins that can help boost your mood and relieve stress.

2. Leave the situation
Sometimes, the only way to keep from losing your temper is to leave the situation that’s annoying you until you can calm down. If it’s not possible to physically get away from the situation, try turning away your mind by counting 1 to 10.

3. Imagine a peaceful place
If you can’t escape to a beautiful, peaceful place every time you lose your cool, try imagining such a place. Close your eyes and picture yourself in a peaceful place like a mountaintop surrounded by thick green plants, open to the sky, and bathed in sunlight. Note the deep blue color of the sky, feel the sun’s rays bring comfort to your body, smell the fragrance of the flowers all around, and hear the patter of drops falling off leaves after a recent rain. Look far below and see the shore of a peaceful beach on a calm lake.

4. Drift on the calm water
Alternatively, you can imagine yourself at the shore of the lake and walking along the soft sand. You're completely alone, but you find a boat tied to a dock. After untying the mooring rope, lie down on soft blankets inside the boat and watch the clouds as you drift on the calm water. The boat rocks gently, and waves gurgle under the boat as you drift in the warmth and feel the soft movement of a breeze.

It’s important to remember that anger and hostility can harm your health. So, try to dial down angry thinking and behavior by taking an exercise break, leaving the situation, or imagining a peaceful place. By doing this, you can experience a deep sense of relaxation and avoid negative health consequences caused by anger.
