Dear Peter,
I’m more than delighted to know that you show great interest in Chinese calligraphy and are eager to learn it.Here is my advice for you.
Learning Chinese calligraphy is not an easy thing and time-consuming.To begin with,it’s a good idea to choose an online course of Chinese calligraphy. You can visit relevant web sites where you can find many good courses.Secondly, why not follow an instructor expert in it in your local place Most importantly, please keep in mind that what you have to do is keep going.
I’m sure you will succeed eventually as long as you put your heart into it.I expect to see your works of Chinese calligraphy next time.
Yours,
Li Hua

Here is a secret that everyone knows: I don’t like to ask for help.Of course,my disability means that I need assistance when I get dressed and have to be driven everywhere, but that is precisely my point.
One night a few years ago, after my caregiver helped me to bed,I enjoyed my favorite part of my routine—playing with my service dog Marshall. When the rest of the world made me feel “lacking”,Marshall made me feel like “enough”.
As usual,he jumped off the bed after a few minutes, but the pain in his eyes told me something was wrong.A few days later,a trip to the vet confirmed my worst fears.Dr Tom said,“I must perform an operation to treat him.”“Is he in pain?” I held my breath. Then I got the answer “Yes.”
I felt heartbroken.I couldn’t remember talking about the details.I had one huge question:“How much would the operation cost?”“About$2,500.It might as well have been a million.” I couldn’t afford it.Each day,I searched for ways to raise money for this operation.
A beautiful bike trail was close to the apartment where we lived. On most of the days of our eight years together,Marshall and I used it.I loved the trees, the fresh air and being outside.Over the years, many of the neighbors got familiar with us.Everyone loved Marshall.
Then one day,an idea occurred to me.Could I ask these people to contribute to the cost of Marshall’s operation If I could push my wheelchair a certain number of laps(圈) and get money for every lap that I completed, might I raise enough money for Marshall to have his operation Our regular route was a mile and a half long.My goal was to push my wheelchair ten laps,a total of fifteen miles.Next, feeling very bold and a little nervous,I set a date. Then I made posters and posted them around my apartment and all over the bike trail. My neighbors were concerned for Marshall.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
With hope,I started to train myself.
The big day finally came and I went out at 6:30 a.m.
参考范文
With hope,I started to train myself. For the first few days,I nearly gave up.Pushing my wheelchair made me feel great pain in my back and shoulders, but my love for Marshall kept me going.Instead of listening to my body,I focused on the voice in my heart. When I was training,I thought to myself,“One more lap.You can do this.Don’t stop.Marshall needs you.” After weeks of daily training,I could finish all fifteen miles.
The big day finally came and I went out at 6:30 a.m.The first few laps were long and lonely.Slowly the donors and neighbors came to watch. Some even cheered as I passed them. With every mile, more people came and donated money. There was hope after all.Donations from the neighbors continued. Many hours passed, and I finished all fifteen miles.I succeeded in raising enough money for Marshall’s operation.I could never have made it without these kind people’s support.写作规范练(二)

Dear Tom,
With the World Reading Day over,I am writing to share some related information with you.
It’s widely acknowledged that reading benefits us in many ways. Not only can it broaden our horizons but it can also deepen our thoughts. Therefore,a series of activities, such as Reading Salon,a Second-hand Book Exchange, took place on that day.
What deserved to be mentioned most was the theme of the reading day—Reading Chinese Classics and Inheriting Chinese Culture. From then on,we students realized that it was high time that we should do more reading and pass on Chinese culture.
How I wish you had joined us!
Yours,
Li Hua

I was a single mother in my 30s who lived down and out with my daughter Peggy in a small apartment, struggling hard to make ends meet.
One day,I headed to the downtown for an interview.I sat down in the streetcar, and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle decorated with gold scrolls, among which there was a name carved.
On impulse(冲动) I determined to find the owner myself.I got off the streetcar in the heavy rain and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name,I found it immediately and called it,waiting patiently, and then a lady answered.
“Yes,” she said in surprise, with extreme excitement.“It was my umbrella which had been stolen more than a year before.”
So appealing was her pleasure that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small house. She took the umbrella, with teary eyes, explaining with choking voice that the umbrella was given by her parents, now dead. Her happiness at retrieving(找回) this special possession was such that to have accepted her reward would have spoiled something,so I refused her offer and left.
The following months were hard.I could only obtain temporary employment, for a small salary. What was worse,I had just lost my last job before Christmas, with only fifteen dollars left.Unless a miracle happened,I would be homeless in January, hungry and jobless.I had prayed steadily for weeks, and there had been no answer but this coldness and darkness.
The air was full of Christmas merriment, with the bells ringing and children shouting in the bitter dusk of the evening. But there should be no Christmas for me,I knew,no gifts,no remembrance whatsoever.
Thinking of this,I couldn’t control my tears on my way home, but I managed a smile so I could greet my little daughter. She opened the door for me and threw herself in my arms, screaming joyously and demanding desirably for her Christmas gift. There I stood, frozen, overwhelmed by misery.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it,calling that it must be Santa Claus.
Suddenly,a note attached to one package caught my eyes.
参考范文
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it,calling that it must be Santa Claus. Then I heard a man talking heartily to her and went to the door.He was a delivery man,and his arms were full of parcels.“This is a mistake,” I said, but he read the name on the parcels and they were for me.When he had gone,I didn’t know what to do.Later,Peggy and I sat on the floor looking at each other. What a surprise! I looked for the name of the sender.
Suddenly,a note attached to one package caught my eyes.I picked up the note, which read “Thanks for returning the umbrella.Merry Christmas!” It was sent by the lady.Holding the note tightly,I was on the verge of tears, with a stream of warmth spreading through my body.On that cold Christmas,I forgot I had no money for the rent and only fifteen dollars in my pocket. We just sat in our small apartment unwrapping the gifts with happiness.A sweet peace flooded me like a blessing which made me hopeful again.写作规范练(九)

April,a girl of six,and her brother,Jesse, lived in the city.On her seventh birthday,April’s mother gave her a puppy named Tiny as the present. The thrilled brother and sister couldn’t wait to walk the puppy and play with their new friend outside. In the big and busy city which they lived in,however, they could think of nowhere to go.They were deeply troubled and turned to their mother for help.
“The city owns the empty lot across the street,” said their mother, pointing to the piece of land.“Let’s ask the government if we could put a pocket park there.”
“What kind of pocket has a park?” Jesse was confused. He pulled a penny out of his pocket.“No park here,” he said.
“A pocket park is a small park,” their mother explained.April and Jesse thought a pocket park was a great idea.
In order for that to happen, their mother went on explaining;they would need a petition(请愿书) signed by all their neighbors, stating that they all wanted a pocket park. They would have to show it to the officials when they went to the city hall.
Having written the petition, their mother led April and Jesse to pay a door-to-door visit to the neighbors.Much to the pleasure of the trio, everyone was very enthusiastic about the idea.As a matter of fact, they had been harboring the idea for quite some time, and it was April’s family that took the first step.So they promised to make whatever contributions they could when the construction started.
With the signed petition in their hands, the mother took her kids to the city hall, where they showed the paper to the officials. The kids explained that their new friend Tiny desperately needed a playground, and that everybody in the neighborhood would benefit from it.They were very persuasive.Later,a worker gave their mother some forms to fill out. When everything was done, they were told to go home and wait for the news.

A few weeks later, they received a letter from the government.
The next day,the whole neighborhood met at the lot and the construction started.

A few weeks later, they received a letter from the government.Inside the letter was the permit for their pocket park they’d been waiting for.“Let’s share the news with everybody!” On hearing the news,April and Jesse jumped up and down, cheering and dancing.“We couldn’t have done this without everyone’s support.” The news was warmly welcomed by their equally excited neighbors. They decided that no more time should be wasted before the construction of the pocket park began.Just as they had promised, everyone was eager to help build it.
The next day,the whole neighborhood met at the lot and the construction started. Some picked up trash and pulled weeds, some planted grass and flowers.Someone made a nice bench, while some other persons donated a fountain.April and Jesse also contributed to a painting on the wall.Exhausted as people were when the project was completed,a beaming smile was on their faces. With the new pocket park to exercise and socialize in,the neighborhood became happier.Even Tiny made new friends.写作规范练(六)

They’d been planning this forever. From her birth, most likely.Mya’s mother,Helena loved hosting parties. And Aunt Beatrice loved birthdays.Together, they’d make her Sweet Sixteen a hundred times bigger, bolder, and brighter than it needed to be.They selected a theme every year and stuck to it.Her fourteenth had been the “Snow White” and her ninth had been the “Frozen”.They never told her what the theme was the day before. She’d just wake up her birthday morning,a brand-new birthday outfit(一套服装) laid neatly on her dresser (an outfit related to the theme,of course) and she would open her door to see the adventure that lay ahead of her that day.
Mya had a few guesses as to what this year’s theme would be.A play on the words “Sweet Sixteen” was likely—a candy themed party, perhaps? But she’d had a baking party a few years before—and Helena was anything but repetitive.Mya didn’t have any interest in cars,so she doubted a sports-car party was on the menu. She’d tried to look through her mother’s purchase history online, but her mother had been careful enough to delete everything recent. So the only clue left was the birthday outfit she would receive the next morning.
May 1st,Mya woke. The bright sunlight begged her eyes to open and she loved the day that her birthday took place. It was always nice out on May 1st and it never rained. This morning was no different than her previous birthdays. She sat up in her bed and looked to her dresser before slipping out of bed and inspecting the outfit. She unfolded it and held it against her body, seeing how it was like.It reached down, just above the ankle.Mya dressed, eyed herself in the mirror and found it was not so much a pretty outfit as she had received before. It was totally one for blue-collar workers!

Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by a knock.
With everything done, her face shone with a sweet smile.

Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by a knock.Helena walked in.“What is my birthday theme this year,Mum?” Mya asked.“Labor!” Helena answered in a firm voice.“But I was expecting a party!” her voice sounded shaky.Oh,how could she forget she was born on Labor’s Day!Mya’s feet brought her small steps to follow Helena to the van.On arriving at a farm, she noticed the vast land of wheat spreading over the horizon that made a splendid view itself.Their job was to remove the weeds.
With everything done, her face shone with a sweet smile.Several drops of sweat traced a path on her red and pink cheeks and she turned to Helena:“This is not bad,Mum and I feel I’ve grown up enough to help you with something.”Helena pulled Mya into her arms and planted a big kiss on her forehead. The sun in May was shining brighter than ever like a fire ball.Picturing the good harvest of this year, they hit the road with a happy birthday song echoing in the van.写作规范练(七)

Kumar was a hard-working and ambitious student in Academic Magnet High School, who had a preference for the engineering design. One day he was walking home from school.Nothing pleased him more than to walk along the busy street and look at the glass doors of the shops. When doing so,he never failed to stop to look at the latest laptops in the computer shop.He was thinking,“I would love so much to own that laptop. But nobody will buy it for me.”
So Kumar thought hard of what to do.The school holiday was coming up next week.An idea struck him.He would do odd jobs to earn some money.Yes! That was what he would do.
His house is next to East Lake shore Drive in Chicago, where there stand varieties of cottages with beautiful gardens. It follows that he designed a plan of working in his neighbors’ gardens.First,he would approach them and ask them to let him clean up their gardens. After his finishing the job, each owner would probably pay him $50 or $60.Working in more than ten gardens would enable him to accumulate enough cash to buy his beloved laptop.Making up his mind triggered a feeling of joy and a brisk walk home.
The next day,he went around his neighborhood and asked the residents if he could clean their gardens. He asked them politely,“Excuse me,can I work in your garden during the school holiday?” Many of the owners were kind of curious about what Kumar was requiring and asked why.Having known about his thirsty for a laptop, they all replied “Yes”.They liked the courteous(有礼貌的) boy.
So Kumar started working in his first house. He woke up early that morning. He took three hours to clear the rubbish and cut the grass. It was not easy work.He had to mow the grass. After that,he had to pull the weeds. Then,he had to arrange the flowerpots. This arduous(艰巨的) work went on for a week.Consequently,he had no time for games or even watching television.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
After that week, his parents and friends had different voices.
At the end of November,he had saved up enough money.
参考范文
After that week, his parents and friends had different voices.A friend Bakri told him,“Heh,forget about your e and join our football game.” His mother felt concerned for her son’s well-being and told her husband,“Just give him the money for the laptop.” His father said,“No.It is better for him if he works hard for it.He would appreciate his laptop more.” After two weeks,he managed to save $700.All the money was kept safely inside a drawer. He was thinking,“Not too bad.” After this,he needed another $300.That would mean another week of clearing gardens.
At the end of November,he had saved up enough money. He now had $1,000.Early in the morning,he went to the computer shop in great delight. The owner of the shop smiled upon seeing Kumar. As usual,he asked,“Come to look at the laptop again?” This time,Kumar said proudly,“Oh no,not just take a look. This time I come to buy it.” However, the shop owner went on,“But the only one left has been sold yesterday.” Although Kumar aroused a deep regret,he left the shop knowing that what he had done counted.写作规范练(三)

That December, with Christmas approaching,my mother was out at work when I let myself into her bedroom one afternoon in search of a safety pin.I took the key hidden under the carpet, unlocked the door and stepped in.Standing against the wall was a big, black bicycle with balloon tires.I recognized it instantly. It was the same second-hand bike I’d been admiring in a Baltimore Street shop window.Somehow my mother must have scraped together enough for a down payment and meant to surprise me with the bicycle on Christmas morning.
I was deeply moved by the discovery and yet sickened by the knowledge that, bursting into her room like this,I had robbed her of the pleasure of seeing me astonished and delighted on Christmas day.I immediately backed out,put the key back in its hiding place, and thought over what to do.
I decided that between now and Christmas I must do absolutely nothing to reveal the slightest hint of my terrible knowledge.Nothing must deny her the happiness of seeing me completely amazed on Christmas day.I even started practicing my surprised face in front of the mirror, testing exclamations of delight: “Wow!” “A bike with balloon tires! I don’t believe it.”
The day finally came when Christmas arrived. My mother woke me and my sister early in the morning.“Go and see what Santa Claus brought to you.”

Heartbeat racing,I came out of my bedroom.
I was about to go into my room disappointedly when my mom cried behind me,“Wait! There’s something in my bedroom I forgot all about.”

Heartbeat racing,I came out of my bedroom. To my disappointment, only a few small brightly wrapped packages were lying under the Christmas tree.No bicycle. My heart sank as if being splashed by cold water.Slowly I opened my package, only to see a shirt lying inside. What I felt was bitter displeasure. What happened to my bicycle I couldn’t help thinking my mom had found the bike just too expensive and eventually sent it back.I could feel tears welling up in my eyes as I clenched the shirt.
I was about to go into my room disappointedly when my mom cried behind me,“Wait! There’s something in my bedroom I forgot all about.” She went to her room, and a moment later came back wheeling the big black bicycle with balloon tires.I didn’t have to pretend the excitement and surprise as the bicycle came into my sight.I embraced my mom and kissed her spontaneously.“Thank you, mom! This is the best Christmas gift I’ve ever had!” A brilliant grin bloomed on my mom’s face as she held me tightly.Hiding her pleasure of seeing my surprised face, she said,“All right now,it’s only a bicycle.”写作规范练(十)

Growing up,my family always had cats—but by the time I got to college,I wanted one I could call my own. So,I visited Animal Home in Michigan, looking for the perfect cat.
There was a black kitten I nearly ignored. He was skinny and small and not even cute, but he stuck his paws through the cage, trying to play with me.He was clearly interested in me,so I asked to hug him.He curled up on my shoulder and began purring(发出咕噜声).Our connection was immediate.I adopted him, named him Adam, and brought him home.
Over the next 16 years,Adam and I were so close. He was gentle, sweet and playful. But one night last year, everything changed.
It was as if one day Adam was still acting like a kitten, and then the next day he was vomiting(呕吐) all the time and no longer acting like his usual self. He’d lost weight and I knew that he was sick.I took him to the vet(兽医) and the diagnosis was sad: stomach cancer.Worse yet,the vet thought he was too old for operation. All I could do was give him medicine to help make him more comfortable.
A month later,Adam got worse.I took him to the emergency vet, where they kept him overnight to administer fluids(输液).When I went to pick him up the next morning,on Christmas Eve,the vet said it was time to end his life.It was the best thing to do for him. With deep sorrow,I said goodbye to him.
Once I got back home, reality hurt me much.Usually,Adam was there to wait for me at the door. But he was gone, leaving an aching emptiness in my life and at my home.I suffered from huge pain.I told my husband I didn’t want another cat.

Few weeks later,my friend Amy who rescued homeless cats called me.She saved an injured kitten from the street, asking if I could go and take care of the kitten while she cleaned her cage.I was unwilling but finally agreed. When I arrived,I picked up the cute kitten. To our amazement, she was incredibly mild and calm while I hugged her.Seeing the kitten was in desperate need of care,I was tempted to adopt her at once, but the grief for Adam was still burning me.After a hard struggle,I made up my mind to bring her home.
After I brought the new cat home,my huge pain gradually disappeared. My new companion lifted my depression greatly: She greeted me at the door daily, demanding hugs and kisses. With time going by,I was no longer painful by Adam’s loss, instead I focused on providing a good home for my new kitten.Having to care for an animal again gave me a renewed sense of purpose. When I hold her and hug her,a sense of calm comes over me.Pain over loss can always be healed by new happiness.Hugging the kitten,I realized the connection between me and the cat saved me.写作规范练(十二)

It was our turn to open our presents this particular Christmas morning. The living room was already covered with torn wrapping paper.Obviously, the children could hardly wait to discover the hidden treasures, which they had expected for nearly a month. Now we adults sat around the room with our presents at our feet, slowly removing the paper, trying to maintain our dignity in front of the children.
My wife Brenda, and her family have a tradition of getting each other gag(恶作剧) gifts. This always makes me a bit uneasy at Christmas or my birthday, never knowing what form of embarrassment lies waiting for me under the thin borders of the wrapping paper.
Recently,my six-year-old daughter Christy seemed to busy herself with something while I was playing computer video flight games. Now she was standing directly in front of me.The excitement of the moment just beamed across her face.It was everything she could do to keep herself from helping me rip the paper from each present. Finally,I came to the last gift and with my natural Sherlock Holmes ability,I concluded that this had to be the gag gift. With everyone looking on,I decided to go ahead and got it over with—just let them have their laugh—and I tore the paper and there it was...a toy airplane about two inches long. Our holiday guests started giggling to themselves as I looked up to my wife with an unpleasant smile on my face and blurted out,“A toy airplane? Are you kidding me?”
Brenda gave me a look—the look that always tells me I have just said something wrong and should have given it a second thought.I had failed to look at the name tag(标签) before I opened the present to see who it was from.As I picked up the paper from the floor and read the name tag,my heart sank.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
On the tag were the letters that read,“To Dad,Love Christy”.
Staring at the gift,I suddenly thought of a way to lift her up.

On the tag were the letters that read,“To Dad,Love Christy”.I felt so agonized and regretful to see her joy replaced by a look of total embarrassment and humiliation. She must be praying that nobody would discover whom the gift came from. And it wasn’t just any present. She knew I was fascinated with planes.I quickly knelt down and embraced Christy tightly, willing to give anything to take back those words.I explained I had thought it was from Mom,but since it came from her, that made it different. However, nothing I said could remove the hurt in her heart.
Staring at the gift,I suddenly thought of a way to lift her up.I took that toy airplane in my hand and began making vivid airplane noises.I taxied(滑行) onto the “runway” and accelerated, and it was soon in the air.I put so much excitement into that airplane that other children wanted a turn playing with it.And just like a little selfish kid,I said,“No,this is mine!” It wasn’t long before Christy believed it was really a charming gift and smiled again. Now,I keep the little plane as a reminder of my girl’s love and also, the power of words.写作规范练(十六)

Joyce is in the fourth grade and he joined the noisy children of his class as usual.“Children! Silence!” Mangat Madam suddenly entered the class. She announced next week would be math week.“I’d like each of you to work on a project. You could do it individually or in a group,” she instructed.“The topic for the project needs approving tomorrow and it has to be displayed at the math week exhibition. The best project will be awarded and there is also a surprise gift from my side,” she added.
Joyce, who is extremely good at math, sat in the corner seat of the first bench with Karan,an average.Karan asked Joyce if they could work on the math project together.Joyce replied in a prideful tone,“Ha-ha you want to join me.I think I will do the project on my own.” Joyce wanted to get awarded and the surprise gift all for himself from Mangat Madam.
After deep consideration,Joyce decided to work on a math magic quiz on the circuit board. The next day in school,Mangat Madam arrived at the classroom and all the children submitted their topics for math exhibition. They all chose to work in a group except Joyce. In the following days,Joyce gathered all the materials for the project such as wires, bulbs(灯泡),a switch and a thin plywood board(胶合板).He worked out a few mathematical basic operations to be fixed on the board so that when the wire of the circuit touched the right answer, the bulb glowed.Joyce completed the project and was happy with the result.
The evening before the exhibition, while packing his school bags,Joyce again checked the project to see if it was working fine.Alas! All the lights that were to glow did not seem to light at all.Without finding the reason,Joyce was tense. However,he decided to take the same project to the school as he couldn’t change the topic at the last minute. Then came the next day,and everybody was fascinated in the exhibition.

It was Joyce’s turn to display his project.Making his way to the platform with heavy steps,Joyce placed all the materials for his project well and began to conduct his math magic quiz on the circuit board. He prayed in his heart that his lights would glow again but in vain.Hearing other students whispering to each other,Joyce’s face flushed with shame. He ducked his head and stepped back to his seat. And then Karan’s team showed their project. With joint efforts, they made it.
Finally, the teacher announced Karan’s team was the winner. All the children burst into thunderous applause on hearing that.Karan and his partners walked up to the front with great excitement. They were awarded and also received the surprise gift from Mangat Madam. After class,Joyce approached Karan, expressed admiration for his team’s project and congratulated on their success sincerely. That day,Joyce learnt the biggest lesson of his life: it is always better to work as a team rather than working alone.写作规范练(十七)

Dear Madam or Sir,
My name is Li Hua,who is the customer of your travel agency. Here I’m sorry to express my dissatisfaction with the service of the travel agency.
First of all, during the trip, the tour guide not only introduced too many activities at our own expense but also took us to so many different places to do shopping, which occupied much time.Besides,I do not think the guide is competent enough because he had no good knowledge of the scenic spots and was rude to us.What’s worse, the food served was of poor quality and the accommodations were awful.
Hopefully you can take all of the above into careful consideration and also take some measures to improve your service.

Andrew was a new student in my class, who had emotional management problems.Since he had been suspended from class many times in previous years,I assured the worst when he came to my class.
Andrew sat at the back of the classroom.Every time I talked in front of the class,he would chat with the students around and even laugh loudly.Every time I called on him to answer a question,he would respond with a casual “I don’t know”.If I gave him a slight criticism,he would become really angry. As an experienced teacher,I can always get students involved in class discussion or at least motivate them to sit quietly and listen attentively. But for Andrew,I was really powerless. He was just noisy and rude.
One day,Andrew was talking loudly in the class when I was teaching.I said in the usual tone of voice,“Andrew, why don’t you join in our discussions but have one of your own?” Hearing that,he got up from his chair, pushed the books over and shouted something.I couldn’t hear clearly what he said other than several rude words. After the class,Andrew was sent to my office, where I gave him a discipline referral—a week’s out-of-school suspension.Deep in my mind, though,I didn’t expect referrals to be effective since students would return behaving even worse than before. But what else could I do with such a trouble-maker
I had to admit this was one of my most awful teaching experiences.Andrew’s anger was almost unexpected and out of control. The week without Andrew’s presence was a wonderful time, and the class went on smoothly and efficiently. However, with his suspension week drawing to a close soon,I felt restless and uneasy.Would he disturb the class as always Would he take revenge(报复) on me

On the day when Andrew was supposed to return,I waited for him at the door.Eventually, the familiar figure appeared, walking with his hands in his pockets. As he came close,I was about to greet him when he ignored me deliberately.“Sorry,Andrew.I should have had a talk with you to find a way out before giving you a suspension,” apologized I.With his head lowered,he didn’t utter a single word.“Maybe next time you can’t control yourself in class, you can step out of the door for a while to collect yourself,” added I,trying to break the ice.
A flash of surprise spread over his face. The naughty boy froze there, staring at me with wide eyes.“It is I who should say sorry,” murmured he,his face burning with shame. With a smile of relief,I patted him on his shoulder, signaling to him to go back to his seat.In the days that followed,Andrew didn’t misbehave in class anymore and took an active part in class discussions.Never before did it occur to me that “apologies” could make such a huge difference —it turned one of my worst experiences into perhaps the best one!写作规范练(十三)

How to Protect the Traditional Chinese Cultures
A heated discussion was held in my class recently in order to encourage us students to protect the traditional Chinese cultures.
The students hold different points of view about that. Some suggest resisting Western holidays due to their strong influence. Some argue that we are supposed to hold some creative activities to celebrate traditional cultures so that we can have fun during Chinese festivals.Still others consider various competitions should be held at times, which provides more chances for the citizens to recite Chinese poems and practice calligraphy.
In my view,it is high time that we spared no effort to protect the traditional Chinese cultures.Otherwise we will regret one day.

Growing up,I always dreamed of being a professional skater. After years of hard work,I am living proof that dreams can come true.
When I was born,my parents immediately noticed something wrong and the doctor said I couldn’t skate.I,however, insisted on trying skating in an ice rink(滑冰场) not far from my house where local skaters would often perform ice shows.I remember seeing the shining costumes and their graceful movements.
I determined to take group skating lessons, but I’d cry before class because going into a group scared me.Performing on the ice came naturally, but I have always been shy and afraid to speak in group settings.
One thing I’ve never been afraid of is competition.I get nervous, like everyone else, but never fearful. For me,skating has never been about beating others. It’s been about doing my best.I progressed rapidly and gave my first ice performance at age seven.I soon started to win local and regional competitions. That’s because being on the ice has always been the one place where I can truly express my emotions. The ice is like home.
I began training seriously when I was nine years old.Mom and I would wake up at four o’clock in the morning, six days a week and skate for five hours. Then I’d go to school.Since education has always been important in my family,I had no choice but to find creative ways to fit in school studies throughout my amateur career.
After graduating from high school,I moved to Canada and set out to train full time to give my dreams a chance at reality. And several years later I was competing at the Olympic Games. Not my coach or even my family had ever talked to me about winning a gold medal. In fact,I wouldn’t even allow myself to think about it.I went with the attitude that I wanted to enjoy the Olympic spirit.
Finally, the day arrived.I took a deep breath and eased into a solid performance that placed me first going into the finals.

Two days later,I was the first of the final six skaters to perform on the ice.

Two days later,I was the first of the final six skaters to perform on the ice.I was nervous, but not afraid. The air felt like a cool February, while my heart burned like July. This was it! This was the moment I had been training for! I struck a pose and then started my performance.Performing in the final round was like entering another realm,a realm of jumping and twizzling and gliding.Every muscle tensed and stretched according to my will, just like how I had practiced countless times before. The crowd exploded into cheers as I finished, bringing me back into the world.I tried to compose myself, appreciating others’ performance.
When the medals were awarded,I found myself on the top step beyond expectations.Words couldn’t describe the overwhelming mixture of emotions I felt.Hugging my fellow contestants,I felt relieved that all my hard work had paid off.My parents and coach waved wildly and attempted to contain their excitement, but the glittering tears failed them.It was only when my national flag rose to the top accompanied by the national anthem that I found my vision blurred by tears. Then I truly understand what matters most in achieving a dream is to strive hard to make it come true despite any challenges you are faced with instead of abandoning it easily.写作规范练(十四)

Last May,my parents and I were in Goa on holiday. At around one in the afternoon,we stopped at a restaurant for lunch. It was mostly full except for an empty table in the back corner.
A young boy, about 11 years old, came up to take our order.I asked him his name and,in a soft voice,he replied “Badri”.I thought sadly about how this sweet, innocent little kid had to shoulder responsibilities when he should be learning at school, climbing trees and playing marbles(弹珠).
We were served our food shortly. As we were eating,a large man with a long beard entered the restaurant. He was clearly drunk, unsteady on his feet and yelling dirty words.Badri went up to do his job—slowly, unsure of himself. The man pulled the boy toward him roughly and gave his food order in loud, incomprehensible words.Hesitant,Badri took the order and walked quickly into the kitchen. It was obvious that the little boy was full of fear.
A few minutes later, the man began to get impatient and complained(抱怨) aggressively.Badri came out of the kitchen hurriedly, carrying plates, and started serving the man.But in his nervous rush,he accidentally knocked over a glass of water, which fell on to the floor, spilling on to the angry customer. At that moment, the calm afternoon was completely changed.
The man jumped up from his seat and raised his hand. The terrified Badri burst into tears before him.I knew somebody should intervene(阻挠) but felt uncertain and even afraid of the drunken man’s violence. The other diners were,by then, watching the scene. The other staff seemed unconcerned—the cashier had a puzzled look on her face;the cook never appeared.

Just as the drunken was about to strike the boy,a middle-aged man got up.It was a well-dressed man sitting at the table next to ours.He went straight and placed himself between Badri and his attacker.A fight followed.Screaming dirty words, the drunken swung his big fist wildly at the man.All the other people opened their eyes wide in horror.Fortunately,he missed and the tall, wellbuilt rescuer controlled the drunken man.Shortly afterward, the police came and took the drunken man away.
Turning his attention to Badri next, the middle-aged held Badri tightly.Gradually,Badri’s terrified sobs died down.He ordered a glass of juice and some biscuits for the boy, talking to him in a gentle voice till he felt better.I learnt two things from the actions of this stranger that day:The first—making a real difference often means getting your own hands dirty, and doing things yourself. The other was to never hesitate when it was time to step up and do the right thing.写作规范练(十五)

Alexander sang all the time.He sang in the shower,he sang while he did his homework, and he sang while he walked to school. He simply loved singing. One day during a break,he heard Kevin talking about the tryouts(选拔) for the City Choir(合唱团).
“Yeah,I’m attending the tryouts this weekend,” Kevin announced.“With my voice,I’m pretty much guaranteed a spot.I don’t even need any practice as I am so talented.Imagine they’ll want me to perform lots of solos(独唱),too.”
Everyone knew that Kevin had a fantastic singing voice.Normally,Alexander just ignored him,but he couldn’t help imagining himself as a member of the choir.Wouldn’t it be fun,he thought,to sing with other kids every day and have someone actually teach him about singing
On the tryout day,Alexander took a deep breath, walked into the building, registered at a large table, and then waited nervously in the hallway. The only one who didn’t look nervous was Kevin. And why should he be He has performed as a soloist many times.Alexander,on the other hand, had never taken a musical lesson in his life, much less had performed for an audience.
After a while, the choir director,Mr Robeson, walked in and told the kids that they were to sing a song individually, sing as a group and answer some questions.Soon the individual test began. When Alexander stood on the stage,he tried to calm down and pretended he was singing in the shower. He felt satisfied when he was done,at least until Kevin’s turn came.As Kevin’s confident voice filled the room,Alexander realized that he would never sound that good.
Next,Mr Robeson put the kids into groups of four or five and asked them to sing together.Kevin’s group sang right before Alexander’s,and even with four other boys singing,Kevin’s voice was clear and distinct; it seemed to reach the farthest corners of the room.

Then came the time for Alexander to sing with his group. He didn’t want to sound too loud.Instead,he thoroughly enjoyed singing with the others, trying his best to integrate his voice with theirs. Finally,Mr Robeson asked the kids about their performance experience, music lessons and trainings. All Alexander could say was,“I just really enjoy singing, but I want to learn more and practice more.” He knew his answer was not perfect, but he was willing to do whatever it takes to become a better singer in the choir.
Finally,Mr Robeson told Alexander that he made it,not Kevin. There must have been some mistake.“How did I make it,Mr Robeson?” asked Alexander in disbelief.“Well, you love singing.Although your voice isn’t the best, with training it will improve.” “But,what about Kevin?” Alexander asked.“Talent alone is not enough,” said Mr Robeson.“After all,we weren’t looking for soloists.” Alexander now understood that hard work and right attitude make a difference. He couldn’t wait for the choir practice in the coming week.写作规范练(四)

I could feel the excitement rising in me as I held the beautifully wrapped present in my hands.I was unable to contain my curiosity any longer.I opened it.It was a brand new laptop(笔记本电脑).I had scored straight As for my O-level examination and this was my reward.I had always envied my friends who were exchanging news about chat rooms, instant messaging and e-mailing,all of which I knew nothing about. Now I was going to find out.
It started out simply enough.I was searching for some information online when I came across a social networking site.Soon I became addicted to chatting with my new-found friend on the Internet.I began to spend more and more time on YouTube and became enslaved by Facebook and Twitter.I had never imagined that the day would come when I would be stuck by the glowing screen before me.Whenever I didn’t surf these social networking sites,I would be going through conversation about boring things or fashion websites.
As time passed,I realized that I was addicted to the Internet.During weekends, when I had more time on my hands,I could easily spend a few hours on my laptop. It came to a point where I chose to lock myself in my room, refusing to come out and take part in family discussions.I preferred to stay connected to the people I befriended on the Internet although I had never met them.Soon I was spending the early hours of the morning surfing the Internet.Sleep was replaced by naps(打盹) and my grades at school also dropped quickly.
It was about this time that my parents started voicing their disapproval. It became obvious to them that I was spending too much time on the Internet.I was asked to decrease my usage of the laptop.Yet,however hard I tried,I was unable to pull myself away, unable to end my chat sessions, and unable to concentrate on my lessons.I was desperate for just another click, just another look at my e-mail or message board.

I promised my parents that I would turn over a new leaf.So I made a detailed plan for my everyday life.I managed to change my daily routine. After I got up,the first thing I did was run for half an hour, which could help me forget about going online. After school,I would play basketball with my classmates, which made me healthier and stronger. All this helped me conquer my addiction. Now my life has returned to normal and my grades have gone up again.写作规范练(五)

A Girl with Stage Fright
It was obviously going to be one of those days.Students were preparing for a singing contest actively.Paul,a music teacher, made comments on the students’ performance at the end of a rehearsal(彩排).A girl named Lisa did the poorest preparation.Paul was very annoyed and entirely frustrated with her.He doesn’t recall how he closed the rehearsal, but he’s sure the words he chose were not words that would lift the girl’s spirits but rather satisfy his selfish need to punish her for the poor performance.
The moment Paul dismissed the students,Lisa, the very reserved freshman girl, made a path straight toward him.She looked him right in the eye and said,“I hate you!” Paul was taken aback and frightened by the passion and honesty in her voice.Though entirely shocked,he was somehow able to collect himself and stay calm.He looked her right in the eye and said,“Well, that’s a shame, but it’s my duty to remind you and inspire you.” She didn’t react, but rather stormed away, her anger unchanged.
Several days later, they had the occasion to speak in private.Lisa asked if Paul remembered the time when she told him that she hated him.How could he forget She went on to admit quite openly and honestly that it was herself, not him,who she hated. The moment got heavy and she began to tell him of her fear and pressure when standing on the stage. She believed that no matter how well she prepared, she would perform terribly on the stage.Paul became aware that she had serious stage fright and also realized that maybe he had done something improper several days ago. Then he talked to her patiently and sincerely, hoping to help her build the confidence.

The day before the contest, she was practicing for the singing competition alone. She thought about how to sing every key and practiced it time and time again,so that she could prepare herself well enough. At that moment,Paul came to her and told her that actually he himself was also a person with stage fright when he was young. But he believed that as long as he practiced hard,he would win. Finally,he did beat the stage fright.Hearing that,Lisa knew that she would be another Paul.
However, the next morning, when she stood on the stage, her face turned pale.Looking around, she saw Paul sitting in the audience, smiling at her.Lisa remembered what Paul had told her,and she believed that she had got well prepared.Gradually, she found herself lost in singing her song and forgot all the bad feelings. After her performance, the whole audience applauded for her.She won.
