Having grown up on a farm near Alliston, Ontario, Frederick Banting was a good worker but felt uncomfortable and unaccepted in a town school. Fred hated school. After graduation, he began studies to become a minister. When that did not go well, he changed his goal to medicine. After World War I, the young Canadian doctor returned home to set up his practice. Just then he began to focus on articles on diabetes (糖尿病), a disease that had cost the life of a neighbor’s child.
To solve the problem of this disease, Fred asked Dr. J.J. R. Macleod at the University of Toronto for help to lend him a laboratory and was given a young assistant named Charles Best. Fred and Charles worked day and night, but early results in producing the hormone (激素) preparation they called insulin (胰岛素) were discouraging. Many of the animals they treated died. Finally one animal kept alive for several weeks. The team appeared to be finally getting somewhere, and it was time to move on to human subjects. Before treating human patients, however, Fred and Charles tested the safety of their insulin on each other. Their tests were a triumph.
The first patient to be treated was a fourteen-year-old boy named Leonard. The year was1921. The poor boy weighed only seventy-five pounds, and he was hardly alive. But the new insulin treatment by Fred and Charles was a great success. Leonard gained weight, and his health greatly improved.
In 1923, the Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded both to Canadian doctors Frederick Banting and J.J.R. Macleod. Fred could have made himself a millionaire with his discovery. Instead, he sold his patent for the production of insulin to the University of Toronto—for one dollar—so that the drug could be marketed cheaply and thousands of lives could be saved and improved.
Fred was just ordinary in many respects but he was a man with the strong will to get to his goal. He had the heart of a true Canadian hero.

One day, Vinod Menon, head of the physics department at City College of New York, was going through his office mails. He opened a box, only to find $180,000 with a nameless letter and a return address. Having never seen so much money, he was too shocked to know what to do with it.
City College of New York is one of the most-productive public university systems in the United States, and the physics department has played a key role. Three Nobel Prize winners in physics received their education there, and in 1921 Albert Einstein gave one of his first lectures at the Harlem campus.
“Supposing that you are a bit curious as to why I am doing this, the reason is simple,” the letter read. It continued to explain that many years before, its generous writer had taken advantage of the excellent educational opportunity, available at City College to study physics, earn a master’s degree, and do a long, productive, well-rewarding scientific job. The sender wished to offer the money to poor students learning physics and other sciences.
The return address was to a house in Pensacola, Florida whose owners had no idea of the money. The money was first put aside, but after the two-month-long research which had found nothing that could link it to activities which are not lawful, the leaders of the college decided to keep and make good use of the money.
Dr. Menon, who grew up in India, noted that the gift would provide for two fully-funded scholarships every year for ten years, and that he would try to see it go into the hands of the students who had the fewest means — such as immigrants like him.
28.How did Vinod Menon feel at the first sight of so much money
A.Overjoyed. B.Surprised. C.Anxious. D.Calm.
29.Why does the author mention Albert Einstein in paragraph 2
A.To show Einstein was an excellent student. B.To introduce Albert Einstein to readers.
C.To explain the money was from Einstein. D.To prove the college is famous.
30.What can be inferred about the sender from the letter
A.The sender is successful in some way. B.The sender lives in Florida at present.
C.The sender owns a house in Pensacola. D.The sender used to do something against the law.
31.What will the college do with the money
A.Return it to its owner. B.Set up scholarships with it.
C.Give it away to immigrants. D.Put it all into the bank.
D
In Austin, Texas, a construction technology company, ICON, claims to have America’s first 3D-printed homes for sale. Partnering with Kansas City developer 3Strands, the company is building two-to-four-bedroom homes in Austin, the Texas capital.
The 3D-printing construction technology can “precisely(精确地) control the deposition on concrete over a large print area”, so it can build a house in weeks, the company said.
In the US, the first 3D-printed housing community will be built in Rancho Mirage, a desert city in California, according to developer Palari. It covers 5 acres, includes 15 houses and is set for completion by next spring. Each house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms on a 10,000-square-foot lot with a swimming pool and deck only for $595,000.
All the houses will be made from 3D-printed panels by Mighty Buildings, an Oakland, California-based construction technology company. The company uses panelized technology, called the “Mighty Kit System”, to print a “stone-like” material. Unlike ICON, which works on the building site, Mighty Buildings ships the panels to the site, where they are assembled(聚集).
The houses in the Rancho Mirage project, which always cost three to six months using traditional methods, will take a month to install, Palari CEO Basil Starr told the Los Angeles Times. A typical project of this scale would take around three years, but they are planning for no more than a year and a half, he said.
The pre-sale campaign started in late February and sold out within days, said Starr, adding that most of the buyers were people with practical knowledge or understanding of this kind of technology and a passion for sustainability.
Apart from the construction speed, the companies also stress that 3D printing is more eco-friendly than traditional building methods because 3D printers produce the precise amount of material, while building wood-frame houses will result in construction waste ending up in landfills.
The 3D-printing technology also provides “safer” houses that are designed to withstand fire, flood, wind and other natural disasters better than conventionally built houses, according to ICON.
32.What are the main features of the 3D-printed houses according to the passage
A.Affordable , eco-friendly and safe. B.Cheap ,comfortable and eco-friendly.
C.Time-saving , safe and practical. D.Practical , comfortable and cheap.
33.From the passage, which of the following statements is True
A.ICON will work together with developer Palari to build the first 3D-printed housing community .
B.The 3D-printed houses are popular with all citizens.
C.Both ICON and Mighty Buildings will transport the printed materials to the building sites.
D.3D-printing will help save building materials.
34.What is the attitude of the author to the 3D-printing construction technology
A.Neutral. B.Positive. C.Negative. D.Unconcerned.
35.The author writes the text to tell readers ________.
A.the 3D-printed houses are much better than traditional ones
B.the 3D-printing technology is widely used
C.3D-printing construction technology companies
D.3D-printing technology used in construction

My cousin Allen was the coolest person in all of Minneapolis. By the age of 19, he was a star football player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be just like him. So when Allen asked me to join him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I said yes!
After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies and then set off on our adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest by early evening. On the way to our campsite, Allen pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the foresters worked.
Allen knew all the tricks of an experienced camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest floor, he started the campfire using only stone and steel, no matches. After a day of travelling, we were very hungry. We ate beef and rice and some soup as well.
Exhausted, we crawled into our sleeping bags early. Allen was still talking about his past camping adventures when a sudden wind picked up from the north. The temperature dropped and it began to snow. Allen knew of a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the woods, wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log and then placed it near the campfire. The heat from the fire reflected into the tent. Soon the tent was warm again and thoughts of lake fish filled my dreams.
I was still dreaming when Allen woke me up in a panic. Our tent was on fire! The snow had stopped during the night, but the wind had fanned the flames of the fire towards our tent. Frightened by the flames, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed with Allen inside. Without any hesitation, I reached into the burning tent, grabbed him, and dragged him to the icy lake. We checked each other to make sure neither of us was hurt.
续写要求:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our situation.

67.Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. Our campsite was in the deep of the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only underwear, with our supplies burnt into ashes, including our cellphones. Even Allen was unsure what to do next. The only thing we could do was just sit in the cold air and wonder how to get out of the forest.
Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness. A jeep appeared. A forester had spotted the light from the fire and had come to have a check. We jumped into the warm vehicle and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and were able to call our parents. Allen and I had many more camping adventures from then on, but it was on this trip that Allen began to treat me more like a friend rather than a younger cousin. Our friendship continues to this day.

During the competition, the visiting students will sing the first sentence of a song and you will be required to guess where the song comes from and what’s the name of the song. Please come to the Students’ Union office to sign up before September 15th if you want to take part in any of the activities. The music week will be held in the garden to the left of the library. I hope all of you will have a great time. That’s all!
