When I was young. my family lived next to the sea. My dad used to take my sister and me for trips on his boat at weekends. I began to love sailing. When I got older, l sailed the boat myself.
I loved the water and spent all my free time sailing. It was my favourite hobby.
After I left school, I got a job in an office. I still went sailing every weekend. I wasn’t happy with my job. I found it very boring. I thought about sailing every day.
One day, I decided to leave my job in the office
and make my hobby my career! I trained to be a
sailing teacher. Now I spend every day teaching
people how to sail safely. I’m very happy now. I
love my job.

We can use some two-syllable words as both nouns and verbs.
As nouns, the stress is on the first syllable.
As verbs, the stress is on the second syllable.

Say these nouns and verbs in pairs. Stress the underlined syllables.

有些英语单词当词性不同时,读音也不相同。一般情况下,这些单词作名词时,其重音在第一个音节;作动词时,其重音在第二个音节,而且其第一个音节的元音(指的是元音音标)通常会有一定的变化。

英语单词的重音

Studying stars was Patrick Moore’s favourite hobby. He began to study stars when he was eight. He used to go outside with his mum on clear nights and look at the sky. It looked like black velvet with a million diamonds on it. Studying stars was great fun for him. Patrick has host a TV programme about stars for more than 50 years. He uses his knowledge to tell people about the stars in a lively way. He thinks that anybody can achieve their dreams if they enjoy what they do.
