The chefs face off in a series of challenges that end in one or more contestants getting knocked out at the end of each episode until only one winner remains at the end of the season.

If I have a goal in life, it isn’t to be driving a Rolls-Royce. It’s to be giving away more than $1,000,000 a year and having an impact on people’s lives. I have the success today because I always had to work for what I wanted. I grew up accustomed to risks and disappointments, so I was used to moving forward, no matter what.
In 2008, I went to Los Angeles where I tried to get hired as an agent, an analyst and a
financial broker. Unfortunately, all these doors slammed in my face. The world’s economy was in a bad state, so I knew I would have to do a little spinning of my own.
Youth involves a certain innocence but also perseverance. The word “can’t” wasn’t in my
vocabulary. I partnered with a friend buying distressed multifamily properties around Houston. Even though we were enthusiastic and backed with start-up sums, I didn’t make a deal work. My friend moved on to other projects. Alone, I put all my money into the next real-estate project. I put the time in, I dreamed it, but once again the deal fell through. Two months later, though, the deal came back around. That was when the path opened, luck changed, and I was ready to form my own company. I haven’t looked back. Only ahead.
I’m now able to give back to communities and causes. I donate about $500,000 a year, much
of that going to research to cure rare diseases. We also support a lot of services for disadvantaged children in Houston and other places.
I have always been someone who can see the big picture and have never been distracted by
things that get in the way. There are lessons to be learned, and the biggest of those is to keep going. You may have to change the path, but always keep that vision in front of you.
What do we know about the author
He started his own company together with a friend.
He changed jobs several times while in Los Angeles.
He donated a lot of money to improve his company’s image.
He often encountered difficulties in the process of growing up.
What does the author mean by saying “do a little spinning of my own”
He would give in to the disappointing reality.
He would look for a part-time job independently.
He would be self-employed to develop his career.
He would make his contributions to the economy.
Which quality of the author is NOT shown in the passage
A. Innocence. B. Optimism. C. Perseverance. D. Kindness.
Which one is probably the best title for the passage
A. Tips for a Successful Business B. A Life-time Pursuit of Dream
C. Jumping over Economic Downturns D. Saying No to “Turning Back”

The values of artistic works, according to cultural relativism (相对主义), are simply reflections of local and economic conditions. Such a view, however, fails to explain the ability of some works of art to excite the human mind across cultures and through centuries.
History has witnessed the endless production of Shakespearean plays in every major
language of the world. It is never rare to find that Mozart packs Japanese concert hall, as Japanese painter Hiroshige does Paris galleries. Unique works of this kind are different from today’s popular art, even if they began as works of popular art. They have set themselves apart in their timeless appeal and will probably be enjoyed for centuries into the future.
In a 1757 essay, the philosopher David Hume argued that because “the general principles of tastes are uniform (一致的) in human nature,” the value of some works of art might be essentially permanent. He observed that Homer was still admired after 2000 years. Works of this type, he believed, spoke to deep and unvarying features of human nature and could continue to exist over centuries.
Now researchers are applying scientific methods to the study of the universality of art. For
example, evolutionary psychology is being used by literary scholars to explain the long-lasting themes and plot devices in fiction. The structures of musical pieces are now open to experimental analysis as never before. Research findings seem to indicate that the creation by a great artist is as permanent an achievement as the discovery by a great scientist.
What’s the writer’s attitude towards the view of cultural relativism
A. Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Ambiguous. D. Indifferent.
What does the writer intend to show by referring to the artists in Para2
The charm of great arts is universal and lasting.
Popular arts are hardly different from great arts.
Great artists are skilled at combining various cultures.
Great arts are works of popular arts in the beginning.
According to Hume, why can some works of art exist for centuries
Because they are results of scientific study.
Because they establish general principles of art.
Because they are created by the world’s greatest artists.
Because they appeal to unchanging features of human nature.
Which of the following can serve as the title of the passage
A. Are Popular Arts Permanent B. Is Human Nature Uniform
C. Are Artistic Values Universal D. Is Cultural Relativism Scientific
D
Arguably, the biggest science development of the year to date has been the images of the very depths of the universe taken by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Those images beg a comparison between the external and internal universes that science is bent on observing and understanding.
Decades ago, astrophysicist Carl Sagan famously said, “The universe is also within us.
We’re made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself. ” He was commenting then on the reality that our internal universe was as complex and as fantastic as the outer space.
There are many similarities between the progress we’ve made in understanding the universe
and in piecing together life’s inner workings. Like the technological developments that took us from Galileo’s telescope to the Hubble to the JWST, life science tools have also improved rapidly. From early light microscopes to modern super-resolution ones, these developments have afforded researchers a deep look into biology’s infinitesimal (无限小的) landscape.
Going beyond merely observing the complicated makeup of organisms, life scientists can
now discover the workings of molecules (分子). And that is where scanning the universe differs from peering into biology. Understanding the universe, especially from a functional standpoint,
is not necessarily an immediate urgency. Understanding biology on that level is. Simply
observing the amazing internal structure of cells is not enough. Biologists must also characterize how all those parts interact and change in different environments and when faced with various challenges. Being able to image a virus or bacterium is nice at the level of basic science. But knowing how viruses gain entry into cells and spread, infect, and disable can literally save lives. Not only can life science tools produce images of cell components, even more importantly, they can help predict the effects of drugs on receptors, of immune cells on foreign invaders, and of genetic perturbations (基因干扰) on development and aging.
This is not to belittle the work of scientists researching into universe. They should rightly be
praised for delivering views of impossibly distant, impossibly massive phenomena. My aim is to celebrate these accomplishments while at the same time recognizing that science’s inward search for detail and insight is equally impressive and, in my view, more urgent. The output of both the outward and inward explorations should stimulate wonder in everyone. After all, it’s all star-stuff.
32.Why does the author quote Carl Sagan’s comment in Paragraph 2
A. To present an idea. B. To make a comparison.
C. To prove an assumption. D. To introduce the background.
33.Like the study of the universe, what has life science been advancing in
A. Study approaches. B. System management.
C. Research facilities. D. Technology combination.
34.Which of the following words best describes biologists’ work according to Paragraph 4
A. Risky. B. Practical. C. Flexible. D. Popular.
35.What can we infer about the author’s opinion on life science
A. It can be applied in most areas. B. It has received universal recognition.
C. It should enjoy priority in development. D. It is more complicated than space science.

第二节 (共 5小题;每小题 2分,满分 10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Weighing yourself regularly is a wonderful way to stay aware of any significant weight
changes. 36
As for me, weighing myself every day caused me to shift my focus from being generally healthy and physically active, to focusing only on the scale. The original training program is
beneficial for me to develop muscle. 37 However, thinking only of lowering the
number on the scale, I changed my training program.
I found that weighing myself daily did not provide an accurate description of the hard work and progress I was making in the gym. It takes about three weeks to a month to notice significant changes in your weight due to changing your training program. The most immediate
changes will be observed in skill level, strength and inches lost. 38 Instead, I
switched to a bimonthly weighing schedule. Weighing every other month allows me to observe
and account for any significant weight changes. 39 I use my bimonthly weigh-in
results to get information about my nutrition as well. If my training intensity remains the same, but I’m constantly hungry and dropping weight, this is a sign that I need to increase my daily caloric intake.
40 I’m experiencing increased passion for working out since I no longer carry
the burden of a disappointing morning weigh-in. I’ve also experienced greater success in achieving my specific fitness goals, because I’m training according to those goals, not the numbers on a scale.
Rather than obsessing over the scale, turn your focus to how you look, feel, how your
clothes fit and your overall energy level.
A.That was bad to my overall fitness goals.
B.Muscles rely on more than just activity to grow.
C.I had gained weight in the form of muscle mass before.
D.For these reasons, I stopped weighing myself every day.
E.That tells me whether I need to adjust my training program.
F.The decision to stop weighing myself every day has done a lot of wonders.
G.However, when done too often, this habit can sometimes hurt more than it helps.

听力稿(Text 1)
M: Do you have any plans for the weekend
W: If the weather is fine, I’ll climb mountains or have a picnic with my friends. How about you
M: I’m going to visit my grandparents with my aunt.
(Text 2)
W: I haven’t seen you at the supermarket for a while, Bill.
M: I left last month. I finished my mechanics course. I’m working at the car repair shop next to the Italian restaurant. You can bring your car here next time you have a problem.
(Text 3)
W: Now, if there are no more questions, let’s move on to the next chapter.
M: Excuse me, professor—could we go over that last point once more
(Text 4)
M: Is everything to your satisfaction, ma’am
W: Yes, all the food is delicious except that there is too much salt in the soup. And your service is also very good.
(Text 5)
W: Hello, Mike. This is Amber. I hear that you’re looking for an apartment, and my brother Jack just rented a two-bedroom downtown. He is looking for a suitable roommate.
M: Great. I’m looking for a place right in that area. That sounds ideal.

(Text 6)
W: I would like to begin my thank-you speech by saying “I want to whole-heartedly thank those who stuck with me along the way.”
M: You’re not going to start your speech with that boring opening, are you
W: I think it’s a nice opening.
M: It’s too formal. How about “Hey Emily, you’re totally awesome. And Tania, you’re absolutely amazing.”
W: That doesn’t even come close to expressing how I feel. I want to thank people for their
kindness and support from the bottom of my heart.
(Text 9)
M: Hi, Marina. Can I ask a few questions
W: Yes, sure, go ahead.
M: As a photographer, you are quite successful. Can you tell me who can become a photographer
W: Anyone can become a photographer, as long as you want it. It’s not like you need a
degree or certificate or anything. Yes, I’ve been planning to take photography classes in an art school in the UK, but before this, I’d already been working as a photographer for years — I started by using my phone in junior high. Some of my photographer friends do other jobs at the same time — they are music makers, vloggers and directors.
run
(Text 7)
W: We’ve been running the last couple of days and you’re a fast runner. How often do you
M: Well, now I only run about four days a week. But when I was younger, every day.
W: Oh, really! Did you run in high school or college
M: Believe it or not, I started when I was six years old.
W: Wow. So are you a better short distance runner or long distance runner
M: Actually middle distance runner.
W: How far is a middle distance
M: About 1,500 meters.
W: What’s your fastest time in the 1,500 meters
M: Ah, three minutes and forty-seven seconds.
W: That’s pretty fast.
M: I did that in high school and I won a gold medal then. Though I’m not so fast now
M: What does a photographer usually do
W: There are different kinds of photographers and our lives and work can be quite different, too. A National Geographic kind of photographer may travel to different places, taking photos of architecture, landscapes and animals. But fashion photographers like me, mainly do two things — commercial shoots and our own creative projects. The former is for making money and offering service to customers. The latter is for expression — we post these photos on our own social media, submit them to media outlets and contests, or host photographic exhibitions to show them off.
M: What makes a good photographer
W: For commercial shooting, there are some routines that we can follow and the most important thing is to meet the needs of our customers. For our own shoots, what matters most is that you have something that you want to express, and these things can be received or understood by a certain group of people who think similarly.
M: Thanks for having given the interview
still I can run the event within four minutes.
W: That’s pretty cool. My time will be about six minutes.
(Text 8)
W: Have you ever considered starting a vegetable garden in our backyard, darling
M: Hmm, I’m not sure. What’s the point We can just buy vegetables at the supermarket. W: Well, I think it would be a delightful hobby for us to do together. Besides, we would
have fresh, organic produce.
M: That’s a valid point. It could also save money on groceries and help us stay healthy.
But I’m concerned about the time and effort it would take to maintain the garden. And what if we don’t have a green thumb
W: Don’t worry, we can start small and learn as we progress. Additionally, we have access
to a wealth of online resources and helpful neighbors who can help us.
M: Alright, I’m willing to give it a go. What should we plant first
W: How about some easy-to-grow vegetables like tomatoes and peppers And we can also plant some herbs.
M: Sounds good. Let’s hit up the shop for some seeds now.
(Text 10)
W: Mozart was an outstanding musician and composer whose fame continues to grow more than two centuries after his death. He was born in Salzburg, Austria, in 1756. Before the age of four, he had shown great musical talent. His father then decided to let him start taking instrumental lessons. The boy’s reputation as a musical talent grew fast. At five, he was composing music. From that time on, Mozart was performing in concerts and writing music. By his early teens, he had mastered the piano and violin, and was writing symphonies and operas. His first major opera was performed in Milan in 1770, when he was only fourteen. At fifteen, Mozart became the conductor for an orchestra in Salzburg. In 1781, he left for Vienna, where he was in great demand as both a performer and a composition teacher. His first opera was a
success. But life was not easy because he was a poor businessman, and his finances were
always in a bad state. His music from the next decade was not very popular, and he eventually fell back on his teaching jobs for a living. In 1788 he stopped performing in public, preferring only to compose. He died in 1791 at the age of thirty-five. Although he lived only a short life, he composed over 600 works.
