the number of 意为“……的数量”,后接复数名词作主语时,中心词是number,谓语动词要用单数。
a number of 意为“一些 ……;若干 ……”,相当于a lot of,修饰可数名词复数。后接复数名词作主语时,谓语动词要用复数。number前可用large,small等词修饰,以表示程度。

动词不定式短语作主语时,为了避免头重脚轻,常用it作形式主语,而将真正的主语(动词不定式短语)后置,以保持句子的平衡。
eg:It is impossible to make everyone happy. 让每个人高兴是不可能的。
