[江苏镇江2023高一期中] A
Every year on June 21st, World Music Day is commemorated in over 120 countries, including its birthplace of France, to honour both amateur and professional musicians. Citizens of a city or country are permitted and encouraged to perform music outside in their neighbourhoods, public areas, and parks on Music Day. Free concerts are also held, where musicians perform for the joy of it rather than for a fee.
In the 1970s, American musician Joel Cohen, who was then working for a French radio station, came up with the idea of having musicians perform on the evening of June 21 to celebrate the start of summer. It was finally accepted by France's Ministry of Culture in 1982.The day started in France and has since been extended to countries such as Belgium, the United Kingdom and others. It's the ideal time to learn a new instrument or listen to songs they wouldn't ordinarily include on their playlist. Every type of musician can celebrate World Music Day with friends, family, and even strangers, whether they are young, elderly, new, or seasoned professionals. The purpose is to promote music.
It makes no difference how good you are at making music; everyone can do it. This day can be used by even the most tone-deaf folks to sing their hearts out and appreciate the beauty and power of music. Music is not only a great way to express yourself, but it may also be beneficial to your health. A song might bring back a joyful memory or make you feel energised when you listen to it.

[湖南株洲二中2023高一期中] B
It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on I think better that way.” But is that really true Does music help concentrate
Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a greater negative effect on task performance and concentration.
Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn't matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration.
However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in moods, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there's actually a change in moods when the music is taken away.
It's hard to convince my students that music doesn't help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn't be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don't have writer's block. It's easy for me to put my words on paper.”
“Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to maths, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me.“You could actually be singing along with what you're listening to and doing well in maths.”
【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍的是音乐是否有助于集中注意力。你从事的任务不同,音乐对你的注意力的影响也许会不一样。
1.What does the underlined word “distracting” in Paragraph 2 probably mean ( )
A
A.Making it difficult for someone to concentrate. B.Causing great excitement.
C.Making someone want to do something. D.Making someone feel frightened.
故选A项。
2.What can we learn from the small study ( )
D
A.Students do well in reading tasks while listening to music.
B.Music can't improve people's moods and creativity.
C.Different types of music lead to different performances.
D.The volume of music affects concentration.
解析 细节理解题。根据第三段中的Volume plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration.可知,音乐的音量会影响注意力。故选D项。
3.What do Taj and Danela have in common ( )
C
A.They believe music doesn't help concentrate.
B.They use music to help with their paper-writing.
C.They can't focus on reading while listening to music.
D.They don't listen to music while doing maths problems.
解析 细节理解题。根据第五段中塔杰所说的话I wouldn't be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply.I don't have writer's block. It's easy for me to put my words on paper.和第六段中达内拉所说的话Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to maths, listening to music certainly helps可知,塔杰和达内拉的共同之处是他们不能一边听音乐一边专心阅读。故选C项。
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text ( )
B
A.Should Students Listen to Music B.Does Music Help Concentration
C.Is Music Related to Reading D.Can Music Change Moods
How Similar Are Language and Music
Language is part of our daily life, no matter where we live in the world. It is the same with music, whether you listen to it on the radio on your drive to work or sit before an orchestra. Both language and music play a huge role in our culture.1. .
●Both language and music have a writing system.
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meanings in the form of music.2. . By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. We can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.
●3. .

B
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
●Both share emotions.
4. . Of course you may be able to see it on my face, but you will know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share with that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness.5. . I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of lyrics.

G
A.Both are expressive.
B.Both vary with culture.

Period Ⅱ Discovering Useful Structures—Reading for Writing
Part Ⅱ 拓展阅读训练
[河南信阳2023高一期中质检] A
Michael Morgan was six years old when his father moved a neighbour's unwanted piano into their living room.“And that's really where the whole thing started,” he says.“My mother and grandmother had played the piano a little bit, but my father just thought it was a good thing to have in the house.” Young Michael started piano lessons, but it was when he saw a conductor leading an orchestra on television that he realised what he really wanted to do.
At age eight, he began reading The Joy of Music by conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein and got to know how to direct with a baton (指挥棒).
When Michael entered junior high, he joined an orchestra and learnt to play many instruments. He was just 12 years old when his instructor asked him to compose and conduct a concert piece. And that was only the beginning. Throughout high school, he continued to develop his artistic talent, and after graduating, he headed to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
Morgan is dedicated to offering kids a chance to explore classical music. In his hometown of Oakland, California, he started to volunteer in local schools, conducting student orchestras and talking with kids about music. Later, Morgan developed MUSE (Music for Excellence), a music education programme for kids.
He brings musicians from Oakland Symphony into classrooms to teach kids. He also works with teachers in after-school programmes to teach students who can't afford lessons.
Morgan says his work is mostly about providing young people with an entrance into music.“Instruments are a way for kids to express their feelings, and give them an interest they can carry with them through life,” he says.

Music is a part of every culture around the world. In fact, the ability to appreciate music is built into our brains. Music makes us feel good. Many music studies look at the long-term benefits of being a music listener or participating in a music programme as a child. But can listening to music help us connect and empathise (产生共鸣) with someone right at the moment A new study aimed to find it out.
In this study, 60 university students were asked to watch several 15-second videos in which a person described an autobiographical (自传体的) experience. In some cases, people in the video talked about a relatively ordinary event, like moving into a new apartment, while other stories contained strong emotional content, like recalling a terrible accident or a loved one's death.
While students watched these videos, the researchers randomly (随机) played either “emotionally neutral (中立的)” music or very sad music in the background. After watching each video, the students expressed how much sympathy they had for the person in the video, and how much they wanted to help that person. They were also tested on their social reasoning
skills—how well they understood the person's thinking method in the video. All of these could be signs of empathic connection.
Results showed that people watching the sad videos felt more sadness themselves and more sympathy for the other person than those watching the neutral videos—not a big surprise. But these empathic feelings were strengthened by listening to sad music. The music had no effect, however, on whether or not the students could reason out the other person's experience and understand what they might be thinking or feeling.
While music is not the only way—other art forms, like fiction and dancing, have also been shown to increase empathy, for example—music could be a powerful tool.“It'd be very interesting to extend our finding further, to see if listening to music in a social context can improve our real-world ability to empathise with and feel sympathy for others in the long term,” says the lead researcher Brennan McDonald.

[山东莱芜一中2023高一段测] For people suffering from depression (抑郁), there's an all-natural treatment they should use—getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study's start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段时期) of depression by 17%, according to the study.“Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi.“On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected.“Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there's something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.

A Girl With Stage Fright
It was obviously going to be one of those days. Students were preparing for a singing contest actively. Paul, a music teacher, made comments on the students' performance at the end of a rehearsal (排练).A girl named Lisa did the poorest preparation. Paul was very annoyed and entirely frustrated with her performance. He didn't recall how he closed the rehearsal, but he was sure the words he chose were not the words that would lift the girl's spirits but rather satisfy his selfish need to punish her for the poor performance.
The moment Paul dismissed (解散) the students, Lisa, the freshman girl, made a path straight towards him. She looked him right in the eye and said, “I hate you!” Paul was taken aback and frightened by the passion and honesty in her voice. Though entirely shocked, he was somehow able to collect himself and stay calm. He looked her right in the eye and said, “Well, that's a shame, but it's my duty to remind you and inspire you.” She didn't react, but rather stormed off, with her anger unchanged.
Several days later, they had a chance to speak face to face. Lisa asked if Paul remembered the time when she told him that she hated him. How could he forget She went on to admit quite openly and honestly that it was herself, not him, who she hated. The moment got heavy and she began to tell him her fear and pressure when standing on the stage. She believed that no matter how well she prepared, she would perform terribly on the stage. Paul became aware that she had serious stage fright and also realised that maybe he had done something improper several days ago. Then he talked to her patiently and sincerely, hoping to help her build up her confidence.
