[河南名校联盟2023高一期中]Most of us travel with our parents as children and teenagers. For some of us, during the travel, our parents are our inspiration. These trips are normally full of rental cars, beaches, and hamburgers. My family would go to Galiano Island every summer, and we did a week in Mexico in 1995, and then we did two different trips to Anaheim to experience the magic of Disney, Universal, and Knott’s Berry Farm.
But all of these are childhood experiences and memories. I didn’t really truly travel with my parents until I was an adult when I got the chance to travel with Mum and Dad.
I was in New Zealand for a study abroad, and invited my parents to come down for a 2-week road trip around the North Island and then 10 days in Fiji. Why not They said, as if this was something they were invited to do every day. I didn’t really plan anything, but my mum had done some reading and I knew some highlights after living in New Zealand for 5 months.
I had booked a hotel for their first night in Auckland. The only other preparation I had done was to book a rental car. My parents immediately reached agreement that I should be the driver, for the whole two weeks. The main reason for this, understandably, was that neither of them had ever been in a country where you drive on the left-hand side of the road and on the right-hand side of the car. This led to me driving my parents around the entire North Island of New Zealand for 2 weeks! But still, everybody had jobs. Dad had the maps, and Mum had the guidebook, and I just took them where they told me to go.
Sometimes, I was asked who I was travelling with. When I said “my parents”, the response was, “Ohhh, older people.” Actually, I have some tips on travelling with parents happily.

【语篇导读】本文是一篇记叙文。文章叙述了曾经年少由父母带着出门旅游的作者,在长大后开始带父母出去旅游的故事。
2.Why did the parents let the writer drive the car in New Zealand ( )
A
A.They were not used to the driving rules.
B.They were afraid of the unfamiliar environment.
C.They were too old to drive for a long time.

解析 细节理解题。根据第四段中的The main reason for this, understandably, was that neither of them had ever been in a country where you drive on the left-hand side of the road and on the right-hand side of the car.可知,作者的父母不习惯新西兰的交通规则。故选A项。
3.What is the best title for the text ( )
B
A.Drive on the Way B.Travel With Parents
C.Enjoy New Zealand D.Recall the Childhood

[全国甲2022] As Ginni Bazlinton reached Antarctica, she found herself greeted by a group of little Gentoo penguins (企鹅) longing to say hello. These gentle, lovely gatekeepers welcomed her and kick-started what was to be a trip Ginni would never forget.
Ever since her childhood, Ginni, now 71, has had a deep love for travel. Throughout her career (职业) as a professional dancer, she toured in the UK, but always longed to explore further. When she retired from dancing and her sons eventually flew the nest, she decided it was time to take the plunge.
After taking a degree at Chichester University in Related Arts, Ginni began to travel the world, eventually getting work teaching English in Japan and Chile. And it was in Chile she discovered she could get last-minute cheap deals on ships going to Antarctica from the islands off Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of the South American mainland.“I just decided I wanted to go,” she says. “I had no idea about what I’d find there and I wasn’t nervous. I just wanted to do it. And I wanted to do it alone as I always prefer it that way.”
In March 2008, Ginni boarded a ship with 48 passengers she’d never met before, to begin the journey towards Antarctica. “From seeing the wildlife to witnessing sunrises, the whole experience was amazing. Antarctica left an impression on me that no other place has,” Ginni says. “I remember the first time I saw a humpback whale; it just rose out of the water like some prehistoric creature and I thought it was smiling at us. You could still hear the operatic sounds it was making underwater.”
The realization that this is a precious land, to be respected by humans, was one of the biggest things that hit home to Ginni.

[河南安阳2023高一段测]In February, 2021, NASA announced that its Mars explorer, Perseverance, landed successfully on the Red Planet. Perseverance is on a mission to collect Martian soil and rocks as part of a search for signs of ancient life.
Perseverance landed in an area of Mars called Jezero Crater. Scientists believe the area has a large ancient lakebed. NASA considers the area a promising place to find possible signs of microbial life.
Perseverance carried to Mars a small experimental helicopter named Ingenuity. In April, NASA announced Ingenuity had successfully completed a take-off and landing on the planet. It said the flight was historic; it marked the first time any aircraft had performed a powered, controlled flight on another planet.
In July, British billionaire Richard Branson went into space on a rocket plane built by Virgin Galactic, the space tourism company he created. Branson joined two pilots and three other mission experts on the flight. Virgin Galactic aims to fly private citizens to the edge of space to experience a few minutes of weightlessness and observe the Earth.
A little over a week later, American billionaire Jeff Bezos flew to the edge of space on a rocket built by his company, Blue Origin. Three other people took the quick trip with him: Bezos’ brother, a Dutch teenager and an 82-year-old pilot.
The flights by Branson and Bezos officially started a new industry that promises any citizen the chance to visit space. Such trips will be costly, however. Virgin Galactic’s price for a single flight is $250,000. Blue Origin has not publicly announced its price. Both businesses have built operating bases, called “spaceports”, in the rural areas of the US.
And in December, Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa arrived at the International Space Station (ISS), their destination where they stayed for 12 days. [广东东莞五校2023高一期中联考] Rainforests provide much of the world’s oxygen. People have been trying to protect them for years. But another type of forest, the cloud forest, is just as important to humans.
These forests are at the top of mountains, generally near the equator (赤道).These wet, wooded mountaintops are mainly in Africa and Central and South America. They are called “cloud forests” because their height allows of the formation of clouds among the trees. The trees in these forests pull water from the clouds. The water gathers on the leaves and falls into small rivers below, which flow into towns at the bottom of the mountain. The yearly rainfall in these areas is about 180 centimetres. Cloud forests can pull in up to 60 percent of that. The water is important to the plants and the people in the area. It helps them survive.
Cloud forests are also home to countless species of plants that can’t be found anywhere else. One small cloud forest has as many types of plants as there are in all of Europe. In fact, there are so many species that scientists haven’t made a complete list of them yet.
These forests are being destroyed at an increasing speed. Trees are being cut down, and roads are being built in their place. Some people have a goal to get government money to protect the forests. But they have had little success so far. Another way is to take the place of the destroyed plants with new ones. That, too, has been difficult because the plants are so special. There’s plenty of work to be done, but saving the cloud forests is still possible with creative solutions.

“Time to get up. It’s your birthday.” Alex opened his eyes and looked up. His parents were standing next to his bed holding a breakfast muffin (松饼). “You can do anything you want today,” said his mum.
He jumped up to get dressed as quickly as he could, already imagining what kind of day he would have at the beach. He had always dreamed about playing in the sand and jumping in the waves. He nearly tripped (绊倒) as he ran down the stairs on his way to the kitchen.
Alex’s dad asked him what he wanted to do today. “The beach,” he shouted with joy.
The expression on his mum’s face changed from joy to sadness. She knew the one place that her husband would not go was the beach. When he had been a young boy of Alex’s age, he had a terrifying experience at the beach. Alex’s dad shook off his initial (最初的) shock of hearing his son’s plan.
“How about we go to the zoo instead ” he suggested.“The beach is over two hours away.”
“But Dad, I’ve wanted to go to the beach my WHOLE life,” Alex pleaded (央求).
“Son, I’m sorry, but we are not going to the beach and that’s final.”
They ended up driving to the zoo. It was an exciting day, but Alex could not get the beach out of his mind. He longed to build a sandcastle, swim in the ocean and chase the incoming and outgoing waves. The beach seemed like the best place on Earth.
Over the next few weeks, he dreamed about it almost every night. Any free moment he had was spent filling his room with pictures and drawings of beaches. He repeatedly pleaded with his mum to help him convince his dad to take them to the beach. Each time she explained that they could do other things as a family, just not the beach.
One night, Alex received what he thought was good news. His dad was going on a three-day business trip the next day. “This is an opportunity,” he thought to himself.

The next morning, seeing his dad get into the taxi, Alex ran to his mother. He looked at his mother eagerly and pleaded: “Mum, I really want to go to the beach. Please!” Alex’s mother knew that going to the beach was her son’s dream, but she didn’t want to do it without telling her husband. Alex saw his mother’s hesitation and then said, “Mum, Dad is not at home, so he doesn’t have to worry about going to the beach with us.” With Alex’s persuasion, his mother finally agreed to take him to the beach.
Hours later, as Alex looked out of the front window of the car, his eyes widened and his jaw dropped. It was his father who was waiting for them. When the car stopped, he quickly got out of the car and rushed to his father, asking anxiously, “Dad, why are you here ” His father smiled and said, “Your mum have told me that. I think it’s the right time for me to overcome my fear, so I postponed my trip.” Hearing this, Alex was obviously relieved and became excited. On that day, Alex did everything he had always wanted to do with his parents on the beach. His father also seemed to have conquered the psychological disorder. After returning home, Alex was tired and fell asleep directly on the bed, but he has a smile on his lips.
