In movies and books, people often describe a defining moment when they figure out who they are. However, I never thought it actually happened in real life. I never expected to have a “moment” of my own. When it arrived, mine was much more powerful than I could have ever imagined.
During the spring of my junior year, my class watched a documentary called Invisible Children. It was about three college students who take a trip to Africa and document their experience. At first the film was slightly humorous. However, once the group arrived in northern Uganda, the mood changed. They learnt what the consequences of a 23-year war had been for thousands of children. Some had lost family and friends; others were caught by the opposing force and became child soldiers.
Before long, I was sobbing. I couldn't believe these things were happening, yet at the same time I knew they were. I just hadn't been paying attention. For the past 17 years, I was blissfully (极其幸福地) protected. When the documentary ended, I couldn't get it out of my head. For the next week, I was not myself. Every bite of food I took I thought of Grace, the 15-year-old who had little to eat. When I went to bed, I pictured Sunday, the 14-year-old boy sleeping on a straw mat (稻草垫) on the ground in a camp. My whole perspective shifted.
Since that day, I haven't been able to picture my future in a way that doesn't involve going to Africa and doing what I can to help. Ultimately, this is why I decided to major in engineering. With an engineering degree, my potential for change will be limitless. I will build wells and schools, and design irrigation (灌溉) systems. Engineering is tough, but I know—in what W.B.Yeats called “my deep heart's call”—that this is what I'm supposed to do with my life.

Foreign visitors to the UK might be disappointed when they learn that not everyone there speaks like Harry Potter and his friends. Usually, there's an assumption by many non-Brits that everyone in Britain speaks with an accent known as Received Pronunciation (RP,标准发音), also called the “Queen's English”.However, while many people do talk this way, most Britons speak with their own regional accents.
Scouse, Glaswegian and Black Country dialect—from Liverpool, Glasgow and the West Midlands—are just three of the countless non-RP accents that British people speak with. There are even differences in accents between towns or cities just 30 kilometres apart. What is even more disappointing is that not speaking with the RP accent may mean a British person is judged and even treated differently in their everyday life.
In a 2015 study by the University of South Wales, videos of a group of people reading a passage with three different UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The second group then rated how intelligent they thought the readers sounded. The lowest-rated accent was Brummie, spoken by people in Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered working-class.
However, there is no need to be disappointed though you are not speaking with the RP accent. In fact, doing the opposite may even give you strengths.
Kong Seong-jae is an Internet celebrity from Seoul. After studying in the UK, he picked up several regional accents. He's now famous for his online videos, where he shows off the various accents he's learnt.“British people usually get really excited when I use some of their local dialect words, and they become much friendlier. I think it makes a bond between local people and foreigners to speak with their local accent,” he said.
So if you're working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone from Liverpool, Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely to make more friends.

B.Only the “Queen's English” is accepted in the UK.
C.Foreign visitors are disappointed at their own spoken English.
D.All Britons speak with regional accents.

D
A.It is favoured by foreign visitors to the UK. B.It is the closest to RP.

The lowest-rated accent was Brummie, spoken by people in Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered working-class.
30.What does the underlined phrase “doing the opposite” in Paragraph 4 refer to ( )
B
A.Speaking with the RP accent. B.Speaking with regional accents.

31.What is the passage mainly about ( )
D
A.A study of the most intelligent accent in Britain.
B.A comparison between different British accents.
C.How much British people value the RP accent.
D.There are many regional accents in the UK besides RP.

We're all familiar with migration: Wildebeests dash across Africa, Monarch butterflies fly across the Americas… but did you know that forests migrate, too
In his new book The Journeys of Trees, science writer Zach St George explores an extremely slow migration, as forests move inch by inch to more pleasant places.
“The migration of a forest is just many trees sprouting (发芽) in the same direction,” St George writes.“Through the fossils (化石) that ancient forests left behind, scientists can track their movements over thousands of years. They move back and forth across continents, sometimes following the same route more than once, like migrating birds or whales.” This has happened over thousands of years, and climate change tends to be the driving force.
Of course, today, climate change is speeding up, and trees can't keep pace. Take California: it's getting hotter and dryer and scientists estimate that before too long, Sequoia National Park may not be able to keep giant sequoias (巨杉).
“The scientists there had never seen anything like it,” St George says.“They are worried, and I think at some point we will lose these ancient trees and we will have to think about what we do with the places, and do we plant new trees where they are easy to grow ”
This is known as “assisted migration”—humans plant trees in other places where they're more likely to grow. But this process carries risks—people can accidentally introduce insects and diseases to new places, where they may wipe out entire native populations. So, St George writes, there's a heated debate today: Should humans help the trees escape
“There may be cases where people are probably going to step in and help species move to places where they'll be more suitable in the future,” St George says.“So far, there are no huge movements of citizen groups moving trees north. But that is one kind of vision of the future that the people I interview hope to see.”
A.It is mainly the result of climate change. B.It takes thousands of years to complete.
C.It often follows certain migrating species. D.It is very difficult to track the migration.
This has happened over thousands of years, and climate change tends to be the driving force. 故选A项。
33.Why does the author mention Sequoia National Park ( )
C
A.To prove the assisted migration carries risks.
B.To stress the park is facing a serious situation.
C.To show trees fail to adapt to the climate change.
D.To state scientists' confidence about the environment.
第四段第一句中的climate change is speeding up, and trees can't keep pace表明,气候变化正在加速,树木无法跟上其变化的速度,接着以加利福尼亚州红杉国家公园为例具体说明。
32.What can be learnt about the migration of a forest ( )
A
34.What's St George's attitude towards helping the trees escape ( )
C
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Objective. D.Opposed.
根据最后一段中圣·乔治说的话“So far, there are no huge movements of citizen groups moving trees north. But that is one kind of vision of the future that the people I interview hope to see.”
35.What might be the best title for this passage ( )
B
A.Animal Migration B.Trees on the Move
C.Human Influence on Trees D.Modern Risks of Trees

B
39. . There is no single best shoe for every runner. You should find the shoes that offer the best fit and support to your feet. More importantly, you should replace your shoes every 500 to 800 kilometres.
Take good notes. Take time after each run to write down what you did and how you felt. Look for patterns, things that happen over and over again. These notes will help you find the best exercise for you.
Cross-train. As we said earlier, running is hard on your body. So physical fitness experts suggest some forms of cross-training to improve muscle balance and to help you stay injury-free. They say swimming, yoga, and riding a bicycle are good exercise to be combined with running.40. .
A
C
A.Get good running shoes.
B.Usually, there are warning signs.
C.Such exercise is easier on the body.
D.Running may also help you live longer.
E.Muscles and joints (关节) need time to recover.

A Christmas Tree for Mrs Mueller
The black-and-white photograph of Mrs Mueller that I took pictured her seated on the sofa in our living room, smiling shyly. Mrs Mueller was our next-door neighbour when my sister and I were growing up.
We got to know her after her husband died. She didn't have children of her own and had no relatives that we knew of. She was gentle and kind, and Laurel and I considered her our special friend.
Early one December, Mrs Mueller went into the hospital. Laurel and I were busy making Christmas presents, and we pondered (考虑) what to make for Mrs Mueller. She would be coming home a few days before Christmas to an empty house with no holiday decorations. We lit upon the idea of decorating a small tree that would greet her with lights and cheer her up. We were wondering how to carry out our plan when the answer appeared.
I was in Miss O'Keefe's sixth grade class that year, and we had decorated a small tree with paper-link chains and ornaments (装饰品) we'd made in art class. It was beautiful. Best of all, it had to be removed from the classroom before the Christmas vacation.
Miss O'Keefe said there would be a drawing (抽签) for the tree. We'd each write our name on a piece of paper and put it through the slot (窄缝) in the shoebox she had decorated. On the last day of school before vacation, she'd draw a name from the box, and that student could take home the tree.
As I put the folded piece of paper with my name “Holly Wheeler” into the box, I was beside myself with excitement, hoping I could be the lucky dog. My mother pointed out there were 30 children who might win the tree, but I was certain I would get it because our purpose was good: We wanted to make Mrs Mueller happy.
The day before the vacation finally arrived.____
I raced to my mother's car excitedly when school was out.____
The day before the vacation finally arrived.Laurel and I usually walked to and from school, but that day I persuaded Mum to pick us up in her car after school in case I really got the tree. Before school was over, Miss O'Keefe announced it was time for the drawing. My heart pounded as Miss O'Keefe put her hand into the box and drew one folded piece of paper out. Then she unfolded the paper, looked at it and announced, “Holly has won the tree.” I was beside myself with excitement!
I raced to my mother's car excitedly when school was out.And I'll never forget the astonishment on my mother's face as my sister and I carried the tree to her car.Since Mum had a key to Mrs Mueller's house, we took the tree straight to her living room and set it up on a table. It looked so beautiful! The next evening we welcomed Mrs Mueller back at her door. She slowly made her way into the house and turned on the lights.Greeted by the sparkling Christmas tree, Mrs Mueller was rooted to the spot, looking surprised. Then a sweet smile appeared on her face and tears welled up in her eyes.“Thank you so much!” she said softly.
