[全国新高考Ⅰ2021]Rome can be pricey for travelers, which is why many choose to stay in a hostel (旅社). The hostels in Rome offer a bed in a dorm room for around $25 a night, and for that, you’ll often get to stay in a central location (位置) with security and comfort.
Yellow Hostel
If I had to make just one recommendation for where to stay in Rome, it would be Yellow Hostel. It’s one of the best rated hostels in the city, and for good reason. It’s affordable, and it’s got a fun atmosphere without being too noisy. As an added bonus, it’s close to the main train station.
Hostel Alessandro Palace
If you love social hostels, this is the best hostel for you in Rome. Hostel Alessandro Palace is fun. Staff members hold plenty of bar events for guests, like free shots, bar crawls and karaoke. There’s also an area on the rooftop
for hanging out with other travelers during the summer.

I was in a hurry.
I came rushing through our dining room in my best suit, and focused on getting ready for an evening meeting. Gillian, my four year old, was dancing to one of her favourite oldies, “Cool”, from West Side Story.
I was in a hurry, on the verge of being late. Yet a small voice inside me said, “Stop.”
So I stopped. I looked at her. I reached out, grabbed her hand and spun her around. My seven year old, Caitlin, came into our orbit, and I grabbed her, too. The three of us did a wild jitterbug (吉特巴舞) around the dining room and into the living room. We were laughing. We were spinning. Could the neighbours see our foolish act through the windows It didn’t matter. The song ended with a dramatic flourish (高潮) and our dance finished with it. I patted them on their bottoms and sent them to take their baths.

I froze. How close I had come to hurrying through life, missing that moment. My mind went to the awards and diplomas that covered the walls of my office. No award, no achievement I have ever earned can match this: Isn’t Mommy the best one
My child said that at age four.I don't expect her to say it at age 14. But at age 40, if she bends down over that pine box to say goodbye to the cast off container of my soul, I want her to say it then.
Isn’t Mommy the best one

[湖南长沙雅礼中学2022高一期末]Bogre Udell, the co founder of a nonprofit called Wikitongues, who speaks four languages, met Frederico Andrade, who speaks five, at the Parsons New School in New York City. In 2014, they started a project to make the first public records of every language in the world. They’ve already recorded more than 350 languages, and plan to hit 1,000 in the coming years.
“When humans lose a language, we also lose greater diversity (多样性) in art and traditions,” said Bore Udell. Between 1950 and 2010, 230 languages disappeared. Today, a third of the world’s languages have less than 1,000 speakers left. Every two weeks a language dies with its last speaker, and 50 to 90 per cent of them are said to disappear by the next century.
Wikitongues has asked volunteers in 40 countries to film native speakers talking in the past, present, and future tenses of their mother languages. Native speakers are asked to recall childhood, share their stories and discuss their hopes and goals. One volunteer in the South Pacific islands of Vanuatu recorded a language that had never been studied by linguists (语言学家) before. Another volunteer found a speaker of Ainu, a language in Japan that has no relation to any other known language. However, priceless recording opportunities disappear regularly. Not long ago, one of the last two speakers of a Saami language died right before his recording session with Wikitongues.
A lack of protection and globalization are to blame for the dwindling language diversity. For much of the 20th century, governments across the world have forced some local people to use official languages. More than 100 languages in Australia have disappeared since European settlers arrived. However, most languages die today because of other factors; climate change and urbanization contribute greatly to the disappearance
of languages.

[福建厦门2022高一期末]When the UK hosted the G7 Summit to discuss climate change, organizers of “Zero Carbon Tour” hired an electric bus to travel from London to the summit in Cornwall. It seemed like great PR (公关). Sadly, the bus got stuck before it could return home. It tried five different charging stations but none of them worked.
The incident illustrates the huge importance of charging facility to the future of sustainable (可持续性的) electric driving. According to Fitch Solutions, electric car sales in Europe jumped by 72 per cent in 2021. The market is clearly growing fast. However, this growth will slow if EV (electric vehicle) drivers can’t easily find a spot to power up.
At present, many EV owners charge their vehicles at home using regular domestic (家庭的) plug points. Domestic charging is slow, but it is convenient. Drivers usually do it overnight.
However, there is also the option of public charging on streets, workplaces, car parks, petrol stations and motorway service stations. Public chargers are usually quicker, and obviously, they serve people who are travelling as well as those who cannot charge their EVs at home. According to the European Alternative Fuels Observatory, there are well over 200,000 of these points across the EU.
Public charge points are run by competing operators that typically charge a monthly fee for access or offer pay as you go (though credit card payments are often not accepted). Many EVs now have associated apps that direct motorists to the nearest point. Typically, drivers need a smart card or phone app to unlock access.
Although the charging network is growing, it is still very fragmented (分散的). There are multiple competing suppliers, and the stations are not equally supplied. Some areas are over supplied while others have hardly any. Needless to say, as the EV market expands, drivers will need plentiful and convenient access to public charging points. Ideally, the market also needs global standards and improved management of
electricity delivery, just as important charging stations must offer simple and secure access along with
easy payment.

How to Be an Effective Member of a Team

than trying to make it seem like it’s everyone else’s fault that leads to your missing the deadline.

I found that Minnie had been unhappy ever since her family moved away from Hartford, but I was never quite sure how to approach her about it.
From the time she was a child, she was abnormally quiet; she would rarely speak unless she was spoken to, and even then her response would be very little. Despite her soft spoken nature, she showed a great interest in art—particularly in painting. Whatever she lacked in words, she made up with the paintbrush, and so it was through her paintings that I first noticed something was wrong. When she painted an animal, it would be the pigeons (鸽子) flying in Hanford Park; or, when she painted a person, it would be the partner she played badminton with at the Hartford playground. Whether intentionally or not, she sowed in her paintings what she hesitated to put into words.

Being her elder cousin, I was eager to make her move to the big city as smooth as possible. Hartford was a small country town, so Minnie had grown up alongside familiar faces who were used to her timidity (羞怯). But in the city everyone was a stranger, which made it a challenge for her to communicate with others.
This problem was more obvious with her changing schools. What’s more, she was under some pressure to improve her grades. Although she was a good student, her mother was very demanding with her. She always wanted Minnie to seize all the opportunities to be the best, but it was really difficult for Minnie.
On Fridays when my high school finishes early, I usually head over to the middle school to walk Minnie home. It being such a Friday, I approached the school gate expecting to find her waiting for me as usual, but she wasn’t there.

The guard said he had seen Minnie leave alone already. Immediately I called her mother, only to find she wasn’t home. Anxious and worried, I took the usual path home, asking passers by whether they had seen such a girl. But she was nowhere to be found. I was burning with anxiety. Standing by the roadside, I was at a loss what to do when her paintings of Hartford came to my mind. A ray of hope rose in my heart. Without hesitation, I rushed to the train station.
There she was, sitting helplessly in the waiting area of the train station. I hurried to her, but all my questions went unanswered. Then I took my notebook and drew a sad face with a question mark. Slowly, she picked it up and drew a girl and a house—her Hartford home. Seeing that, I gave her a hug, saying “It’s never easy to start a new life, but we are all here with you.” She nodded in relief. Hand in hand, we headed home.

[浙江温州十校联合体2022高一联考]It’s “Baby Day” at the Riverpark seniors’ home in Ottawa—a twice monthly event Eulah Johnson, 90, never misses. “I really enjoy it. It’s a shift from the regular routine,” says the retired nurse.
Today, Johnson sits on a sofa and looks at a laughing child perched on (坐在……上面) the seat of her walker. After a few moments, the girl skips off to play with the dozen or so other small children and babies mixed with 20 of Johnson’s fellow residents.
Some, like 12 month old Owen, are regular visitors to Ottawa seniors’ homes. “We’ve been doing this since he was three months old,” says his mother, Allison Rodgers, 33.
She loves the social calls, too. “I didn’t have grandparents while growing up. It’s nice to spend time with older people, and it feels good to know they’re getting so much out of it.”

Babies Who Volunteer, the initiative bringing these generations together, is the inspired idea of Jessica Turner, a former educational assistant. The idea came about during a March 2018 visit with her 22 month old daughter Amelia to a friend’s mother, who was living in a long term care unit. She was most surprised by the response of her friend’s mother: She hadn’t spoken in two years, but with Amelia in her lap, she began singing. Jessica went home and immediately put out a call on a mums’ Facebook group: Would anyone be interested in dropping by seniors’ residences with their babies
A year later, there are now 1,500 volunteers, and the organization visits 39 homes in Ottawa. Everyone benefits from intergenerational programmes, she says. “This playgroup is good for the mothers, too. They’re giving something to the community, which provides a sense of purpose and belonging. It can really help someone who is feeling isolated.”

[河北沧州2022高一期末]A lot of people don’t know the fact that crows (乌鸦) are actually very intelligent birds. They have a long list of skills, and now, they’re helping humans eliminate our littering problems. The birds are being trained as part of a project in S dert lje, Sweden that will have them pick up cigarette (香烟) ends.
The crows will then place the thrown away cigarette ends as well as other small bits of litter into a machine built by Corvid Cleaning, a Swedish startup. Then the birds will receive a treat for their efforts.
Christian Günther Hanssen, founder of the company, said, “They’re wild birds taking part on a voluntary basis.”
The birds are not only receiving a delicious treat while cleaning the city, they’re also saving that city a lot of money. The company has guessed that the project will be able to reduce the cost of cigarette end collection by about 75%.
The cost of picking up cigarette ends today is around $0.09 or more per cigarette end, while some say?$0.22. If the crows pick up cigarette ends, it would be $0.022 per cigarette end.
About 1 billion cigarette ends are littered on the streets of Sweden every year, making up 62% of the total litter. $2.1 million is spent in S dert lje in order to clean the streets.
This is where the crows come into the picture. The highly intelligent birds were chosen for the task. “They are easier to teach and there is also a higher chance for them to learn from each other. At the same time, there’s a lower risk of them mistakenly eating any rubbish due to the delicious treats for them.”
Crows are known for their abilities to build and use tools. If this project proves to be successful, then the idea could spread to other places and perhaps be a huge help in other cities and even countries as well.

[全国新高考Ⅱ2022]As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don't exercise, the changes can start even sooner.
“Think of a rubber band.In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,” says Dr. Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of nonaerobic (无氧) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two
years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.

“We took these 50 year old hearts and turned the clock back to 30 or 35 year old hearts,” says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump (泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says.
“The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says. “We put healthy 70 year olds through a year long exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all.”
Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.

Kalsang Lhamo, a resident of Lhasa, is pleased with the service. “I am happy to see that we have such a 44________ (convenience) library in our city.It means the city is developing, and more residents will benefit from it,” Kalsang Lhamo said. “The library’s amount of current collection is small, 45________ it will grow as time goes by, and I hope we will have more smart self service libraries at various sites in the region.”

[湖南长沙南雅中学2022高一期末]Often, my grandfather would bring me a present when he came to visit. These were never the sorts of things that other people brought, such as dolls, books or toys. My dolls and toys have been gone for more than half a century, but many of my grandfather’s gifts are still with me.
Once he brought me a little plastic cup. I looked inside, expecting to see something special. But there was only some loose soil in it, which made me disappointed. He smiled at me affectionately. Turning around, he picked up a little teapot from my dolls’ tea set and took me to the kitchen where he filled the little teapot with water. Back to the living room, he put the plastic cup on the windowsill (窗台) and handed me the teapot. “If you promise to put some water in the cup every day, something may happen,” he told me.

At that time, I was only five years old. This whole thing made no sense to me at all. I looked at him doubtfully and asked, “Do I have to water it every day ” He nodded to me with encouragement, “Yes, every day, dear.”
And so I promised. At first, curious to see what would happen, I did not mind doing this. But as the days went by and nothing changed, it got harder and harder to remember to put water in the cup. After a week, I asked my grandfather if it was time to stop yet. Shaking his head, he said, “Every day.” The second week was even harder, and I became regretful about my promise to put water in the cup. When my grandfather came again, I tried to give it back to him, but he refused to take it, saying simply the same words, “Every day.” By the third week, I began to forget to put water in the cup during the day. Often, I would remember only after I had been put to bed and would have to get out of bed and water it in the dark. But I did not miss a single day.
