Every summer, my family and I visit our relatives in India and whenever we travel, my parents always remind me to drink only bottled or boiled water. On one of my trips to India, I saw children drinking water from the roadside. I was troubled to learn that millions of people, most of them children in developing countries, die each year because of water related diseases.
Living in the US, I am lucky to be able to turn on the tap and get potable water (饮用水), while one sixth of the world’s population lacks access to clean water. This year, I entered the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. In late June, I learnt that I was selected as one of the top 10 national finalists of this famous middle school science competition. Over the summer, I worked with Dr Jim Jonza, my scientist mentor (导师) from 3M, and developed a system that uses solar energy to purify water. My invention is green and cost effective, and I am looking forward to implementing this in places that are affected by harmful water pollution.
In October, my family and I flew to 3M headquarters in St Paul, Minnesota, where the final event was to be held. For the last challenge, each of us had to present the invention we had been workingon over the summer. The first place winner would win?$25,000, a trip to Costa Rica, and the title of America’s Top Young Scientist. At the award ceremony, all of us waited anxiously until one of the judges, Danny Forester, started announcing “The winner of the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge is…” You could hear a pin (大头针) drop as he opened
the paper with the winner’s name, “Deepika Kurup!”
As America’s Top Young Scientist, I was given an opportunity to show my invention on national
television and deliver several presentations. One of the most important things I have learnt is that
communication and teamwork are key to success.

[辽宁师大附中、丹东二中等校2021高一联考]Fast fashion has changed the way we dress. We buy more clothes, more often, but wear them less. The average lifespan of a piece of clothing is just two years, and 87 percent of unwanted clothing ends up in landfills or incinerators (焚化炉).
Alina Bassi, founder of Kleiderly, wants to give our clothing waste another chance of a useful life. As a chemical engineer, she has always cared about the threat of climate change—in her teens she made a film highlighting the environmental impact of Heathrow Airport—but she actually started her career in the oil industry. “I learnt so much there, but knew it wasn’t quite right for me,” Bassi says. As a junior engineer, it was difficult to make changes in large corporations, but she wanted to make an impact.“I really wanted to work in sustainability (可持续性).”
After a few more years in the energy industry, she landed a job with bio bean, a company that turned waste coffee grounds (渣滓) from major UK café chains into products that could be burned for heat and fuel. After a year in Berlin as chief operating officer of Kaffeeform, another coffee recycling company, Bassi was eager to step into a different field—used coffee grounds are not the biggest threat faced by the planet. Instead, Bassi put effort into tackling a much bigger polluter.
Kleiderly hopes to change the landscape of clothing waste.Using the principles of a circular (循环的) economy, Bassi has developed a low energy, multi stage process to turn clothing fibres into an alternative to oil based
plastic. She is reluctant to reveal any further details as the process is still being patented. This plastic can
then be fed to manufacturers that can use it in their existing machines, so that your old T shirts and jeans
are reused as brand new products. “I wanted to take the fibres and turn them into something that would be
used for many years to come,” Bassi says.

Clowns began appearing in 2________ form we recognise today in European theatres in the 17th century. With brightly coloured clothes, big red noses and colourful faces, clowns tried every means to act foolishly or play tricks 3________ (make) the audience laugh.
Part Ⅲ
Exercise 2
故填has changed。
故填the。
故填to make。
Clowns became popular in the US in the 1960s. A happy clown 4________ (choose) by McDonald’s to appear in its advertisements. Today, as we know, that company’s mascot (吉祥物), Ronald McDonald, is world famous.
However, the image of a happy clown is largely an American creation. In other cultures, the clown character is not 5________ (necessary) good. One example is “Mr Punch”, who was popular in British and French theatres during the 1700s. While Mr Punch was funny, he was also violent, often 6________ (hit) his wife during the show, which gave rise 7________ the name of “bad clowns”. Even today, in the eyes of some people, clowns are evil (邪恶的) and 8________ (frighten).
Exercise 2
Part Ⅲ
7.to give rise to 为固定搭配,意为“引起;导致”,故填to。
故填was chosen。
Of course, there are different voices. Some people think clowns are positive, creative and imaginative. They bring people 9________ (please) and laughter. That’s 10________ attracts people, especially children, to clowns. They believe that as long as there are children in the world, there will be a future for clowns.

The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first, he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realised this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop,” someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate (调查), a thick cloud of smoke greeted him.The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and walked along the corridor (走廊) through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the old lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Mary. Jane began banging on Mary’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbours—some still in their pyjamas (睡衣裤)—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

Tom noticed the flames were growing higher and higher. Unluckily, there was no sign of answering the door. With no time left, Jane took a deep breath, breaking into the house. Struggling to control his fear, Tom followed his sister directly into Mary’s bedroom, only to find that Mary was coughing heavily, unable to move a single step. Jane said in a loud voice, “Don’t worry. We can help you.” However, they had great trouble supporting her to stand up and inching forward slowly. Finally, when they made it out of the flat, they fell to the ground because they couldn't bear the weight any longer.
Luckily, some neighbours passing by stopped and offered help. Thanks to Tom, Jane as well as all the passers by, Mary was rushed to hospital just in time to be operated on. It turned out that she recovered soon. Later, Tom and Jane visited the old lady, who expressed her gratitude to the children. Knowing that there was nothing serious with Mary, the children felt quite relieved and proud. When asked about her thought, Jane answered simply with a smile, “I thought nothing but saving her at that very moment.” Both of them won lots of praise and set a good example for everyone.
