[四川成都七中2021高二期中]Short and shy, Ben Sanders was the last kid in his class picked for any sport team. “Football, tennis and cricket—anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says with a laugh now. Back then, he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in England’s rural Devon.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first, he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then, he began to cycle, along with a runner friend. Gradually, Sanders set his mind on building up his body and increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Sanders was hired as an instructor in Ridgway School of Adventure in Scotland, where he learnt about the older man’s brave and exciting cold water travels. Intrigued, Sanders read all he could find about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, and then decided that this would be his future.

刷阅读理解
Journeys to the North Pole aren’t the usual holidays for British country boys, and many people thought of his dream as a fantasy. John Ridgway was one of the few who didn’t say, “You are completely crazy.”
In 2001, after becoming a skilled skier, Sanders started his first long distance expedition towards the North Pole. He suffered frostbite, had a close encounter with a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit. Sanders has become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he has skied more in the Arctic by himself than any other Briton. His old playmates would not believe the transformation.
This October, Sanders, 27 years old, heads south to explore from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, a 1800 mile journey that has never been completed by skiers.

One part of the world is still largely unexplored. It is the deep sea. Over the years, many people have explored under the sea. But the first deep sea divers (潜水员) wanted to find sunken treasure. They weren’t really interested in studying the creatures of life there.Only recently have they begun to learn some of the mysteries of the sea.
It’s not easy to explore the deep sea. A diver must have a way of breathing underwater. He must be able to protect himself from great pressure. The pressure of air is about 15 pounds on every square inch. But the pressure of water is about 1,300 pounds on every square inch!
The first diving suits were made of rubber. They had metal helmets (头盔) with windows in them. The shoes were made of lead and weighed twenty pounds each! These suits let divers go down a few hundred feet, but they were no good for exploring the very deep waters. Metal suits were first used in the 1930s. With a metal diving suit, a diver could go down 700 feet. In 1927, a diver named William Beebe wanted to explore deeper than anyone had ever gone before. He was not interested in finding treasure. He wanted to study the creatures and plants of the sea. His friend invented a metal ball called the Bathysphere. It weighed more than 5,000 pounds, and with it Beebe went down 3,028 feet. In such a culture, leaders make the big decisions and are not often challenged. Her Swedish team, however, were used to working in a low power distance culture where employees often work together with their bosses to find solutions and make decisions. Here, leaders act as coaches who encourage independent thought and expect to be challenged.
When Gabriela became aware of the cultural differences between her and her team, she had an open conversation with them about their feelings about her leadership.
Pleased to be asked for their thoughts, Gabriela’s team openly expressed that they were not used to being told what to do. They enjoyed having more room for initiative and creative freedom. When she told her team exactly what she needed them to do, they felt that she didn’t trust them to do their job well.
With a better understanding of the underlying reasons behind each other’s behaviour, Gabriela was able to make adjustments to her management style. Finally, she effectively motivated her team to achieve their goals.

[山东师大附中2022高一期中]When archaeologists examined a cave in Grotta dei Moscerini in 1949, they found 171 examples of tools made of clam shells. At that time, however, it wasn’t clear whether the shells had been picked up from a beach or sourced alive from the water.
A team of researchers led by Paola Villa, an archaeologist at the University of Colorado Boulder, recently revisited the collection of shell tools and found new details. Most of the shell tools had worn surfaces, which one would expect were from dry shells picked up from a beach. But nearly a quarter of the clam shells had shiny, smooth surfaces—typical of shells picked alive from the seafloor. Villa and her colleagues concluded that diving for clams might have been a routine part of Neanderthal life in this region. Fishing and using coastal resources were thought to be unique behaviours to modern humans, but Neanderthals could perfectly do that.
Part Ⅲ 单元限时作业
Exercise 1 刷阅读理解
Archaeological evidence has changed our image of Neanderthals in the last couple of decades. Later, more researchers came to the place where the shell tools were found. But it was no longer accessible because it was buried under rocks that were blown from the side of the hill during the construction of a coastal highway in the early 1970s. “Re excavating the site will not be easy at all,” said Villa. And right now the team has no plans to try.
The prejudice against Neanderthal abilities may simply be due to a lack of widespread archaeological evidence. Unfortunately, the coastal sites that might help support the case of Neanderthal beach activities are hardly seen, and many are now underwater. During the time that Neanderthals and humans shared the planet, the climate was much colder and ice sheets stretched over larger parts of the European continent. But at the end of the last ice age, sea levels rose around the world by about 400 feet, swallowing the campsites of prehistory on the shores of the ocean.

It was the middle of the day with bright sun, blue sky, green grass, and a soft breeze (微风). It was a great day to play outside and the best day of my life because I got a new ball and a new bike as my sixth birthday presents, and I was visiting my cousin, Kristy, at her house.
“Here I go!” David shouted, while we were kicking my new ball. David lived next door and was older than me. I thought he was a wild child, but he was actually very kind. The ball went flying as if it were going to space. “That was high!” Kristy said in surprise and we went after the ball.We all had a great time.
Later we had supper and the food my aunt made was good. While Kristy was helping do the dishes, David and I ran outside to play. We started taking turns riding my bike. David suggested that we ride it to the forest. And I agreed. David and I got on the bike and David started going fast.
As we rode through the forest, I felt the wind brushing my face. It felt so great and free. Suddenly the bike hit a fallen branch and we went flying off the bike. Lying on the ground, I felt dizzy (眩晕的). I checked myself for injuries and saw some but they didn’t bother me.

【参考范文】
When we realised it was time to walk home, we found ourselves lost. It was getting darker and darker. I felt so scared that tears rolled down my face again. David attempted to comfort me. He told me that he once made some marks on the trees in the forest, which might help us find the way back home. Therefore, we made efforts to look for the marks but in vain. Having walked anxiously for about an hour in the forest, we failed to find our way out.
It was completely dark when we saw fireworks being set off in the distance. We ran excitedly in that direction as fast as possible. Soon we found my aunt’s house, in front of which my cousin Kristy was holding some fireworks and lighting them.Seeing us back safely, Kristy cheerfully hugged us. She told us that when noticing we had been away for long, she was concerned about our safety. She set off fireworks to draw our attention and guide us. It was an unforgettable experience. Without David’s comfort and Kristy’s fireworks, I would be lost in the forest forever.
