[湖南名校联考联合体2022高一联考]Compared with some other parts of the world, Canada is not a country with a lot of particularly fascinating traditions—which isn’t to say none exist. In general, it’s the aging process, and the various “key dates” that occur as a Canadian moves from babyhood to adulthood that tend to be the most celebrated and ritualised (仪式化了的) moments in mainstream Canadian culture.
Canadian couples will generally announce their pregnancy with great pride to friends and family as soon as they’re aware, and it’s common for female friends of the expecting mother to organise a baby shower—a small, light hearted house party—to honour the new mum sometime before she gives birth. Shortly after the child is born, it's similarly customary for friends of the parents to visit and give at least one baby gift, usually a toy or clothes, to express congratulations.
Part Ⅱ 拓展阅读训练
刷阅读理解
If there’s one thing Canadians love celebrating, it’s the anniversary (周年纪念日) of their own birth. In recent years, birthdays have risen to become one of the most tradition rich spectacles of Canadian culture. During childhood, most parents will arrange birthday parties for their children on the special day (or the closest available weekend), a fun excuse for the birthday boy or girl to gather up all their schoolyard friends and spend the afternoon hanging out. In their teenage years and adulthood, they begin to assume greater control over their own birthday plans.
Completing a phase of school in Canada is almost always celebrated with a fancy graduation ceremony. In their final year of high school (and sometimes middle school as well), students will celebrate the completion of their studies with some sort of party organised by the school, usually known as “grad night”. It usually takes the form of a fancy dress gala (化装舞会) held at a local hotel, complete with a dinner, dancing and lots of awkwardly posed photographs.

[安徽安庆一中2022高一期中]Mikah Frye, a 9 year old boy, was walking down the streets with his grandmother discussing Christmas gifts when he saw some homeless people struggling to stay warm in the cold night. Then he was thinking about a way to help the homeless to spend a warm Christmas.
That thought stayed in Mikah Frye’s mind and when he reached home, Mikah told his parents not to buy the Microsoft Xbox gaming device he had asked for earlier. Mikah realised that by not buying the $300 device, he could instead donate over 30 blankets to the homeless. He knew how much it meant to be warm in the cold holiday season.
Three years ago, Mikah and his parents were the ones living in a homeless shelter. Having suffered a financial crisis, they too had lost their house, not knowing where their next meal would come from and sharing a blanket every night. Mikah was six years old then but he remembered what it was like to have to give back that precious blanket every morning.

Reaching out to the emergency shelter programme that looked after them 3 years ago, the family donated 60 blankets in the end, each with a personalised message of hope in Mikah's handwriting stating, “They gave me a blanket, but I had to leave it. That’s why I want you to have your own blanket. Today, I live in my own house, and someday you will too. Your friend, Mikah.”
The homeless people at the shelter may not have been able to give Mikah a Christmas gift in return but his gesture was noted by the billion dollar company Microsoft who made sure that Mikah was fooled into visiting their store so that Santa Claus could personally deliver an Xbox from the company to him as a reward for making the top of “Santa’s list of nice boys” that year.

[河南安阳2022高一阶段性测试]Casey and John, a young married couple, were driving from Maryland to North Carolina when their 36 hour nightmare began. They expected the road trip to last five hours, but a massive snowstorm led to ice related accidents, and the state closed a 50 mile stretch of the highway for safety reasons.
With traffic stopped and no clear information on when the highway would reopen, some drivers abandoned their vehicles and set out on foot. Others, like Casey and John, turned off the engine to save gas and seated themselves in their cars. They tried their best to stay warm.
By the following day, a cold night in hunger and little sleep left them feeling tired and with little strength or energy. After 21 hours of suffering, Casey noticed a bread delivery truck among the waiting vehicles. On a sudden inspiration, she called Schmidt Baking Company, the owner of the truck. She left a message on the company’s customer service line, asking if the truck driver could share the baked goods with troubled drivers. They all come with a purpose: The headmaster dreamed up the virtual concerts, presenting artists like internationally famous ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro, as a way of bringing together a community struggling with the pandemic. “We have probably the best ukulele player—one of the best ukulele musicians in the entire world—come and play for you guys tonight,” said Headmaster Keoki Fraser as children and parents tuned in from home computers. Fraser is trying to organise concerts every several weeks as his school, like most public schools in Hawaii, continues to educate its students remotely.
