So I started doing that too, as I believed it was the custom, until one day my business partner took me aside and said, “Can you stop hugging and kissing the receptionist every time you come into the office I think it sends the wrong message. ”
I didn’t understand the culture well enough to appreciate the unwritten rules. Yet, as CEO of a fast growing multinational company, that’s exactly what I needed to learn—and fast. I not only wanted to stop sending the wrong message, but wanted to start sending the right message. “As a CEO, it’s important to learn some of the basic phrases in the native languages of your employees—it shows your respect for their culture,”said my business partner.

Every culture has its own set of primary cultural drivers. In the US, we tend to be driven by popularity, success and financial reward. Other regions’ drivers can include family pride or the community contribution. By learning these drivers and how they impact your relationships, you can build trust truly within your company.
Over the years, I’ve learnt to talk openly about these awkward aspects of culture and diversity. They need to be dealt with head on to come to a solution. By doing so, you can build trust and bridge large differences, which can lead to better productivity, higher levels of innovation, and a more enjoyable company culture. As leaders, it’s our job to put these issues on the table and tackle them sincerely—no matter what the cultural divide is.

[四川绵阳南山中学2022高一月考]In China, jade (玉) serves as one of the nation’s oldest symbols of virtue and nobility (高贵). For years, jade carvers have produced beautiful artworks, because of their exquisite (精湛的) skills and complicated techniques passed down from generation to generation. Among China’s wide ranging styles of jade carving, Beijing’s is one of the most famous and recognised worldwide for its use of imperial elements.
Jade carving originated in the Yuan Dynasty. In the succeeding dynasty, the Ming, the court gathered skilled jade carvers from all over the nation to create the finest of products for the imperial family, lifting the art to new heights. During the Qing Dynasty, jade became especially popular in Beijing, and the carving skill reached its peak. After the Qing, the craft continued to flourish, with thousands of people pouring their creativity into the jade carving industry. In 2008, Beijing’s particular practices were listed as a national intangible cultural heritage.
Zhang Tiecheng is a third generation Beijing jade carving inheritor. In 1983, when the technical school attached to the Beijing Jade Factory began to enrol students, Zhang decided to try his luck. The year 2008 was a significant one for Zhang. Chinese jade art was introduced internationally through the Olympic emblem (徽章) “Chinese Seal” and the jade carved medals. Zhang participated in the design of both. They combined white jade with gold, light greenish jade with silver, and gray jade with bronze to make the medals present the perfect combination of truthfulness and virtue.
Following his Olympic work, Zhang was invited to restore the jade decorations at the Palace Museum. During this assignment, Zhang couldn’t help but feel sad as he realised how the once successful jade artistry was slowly disappearing from its once celebrated stage. As an inheritor of Beijing jade carving, Zhang has added modern artistic elements into this traditional skill. [河南开封2022高一期末]In the sport of track and field, athletes compete not only with one another but against themselves, and in each race they try to achieve the new personal best.
For one Nebraska teen running in what would likely to be his final cross country outing before graduating from high school, his personal best turned out not to be marking the fastest time but displaying the biggest heart.
Although it was a long shot when he came out from the starting position last Thursday, Brandon Schutt from Bellevue East High School knew if his time was good enough that day, he still had the potential to qualify for the upcoming state meet. A mile into the 3.1 mile race, however, Schutt realised he wasn’t going to be able to keep up the necessary momentum (冲力). Rather than risk injury, he slowed to a comfortable pace that would allow him to simply get pleasure from the moment and the day.

Meanwhile, Blake Cerveny from Omaha Burke High School was running a very different kind of race. Aiming to beat his own personal record, after a fast start, he continued to push himself hard.
With less than 400 metres to go, Cerveny’s legs cramped up (抽筋), but he didn’t give up. Cerveny rose from the ground and continued on the track, only to fall again after another 150 metres… and again, he got up and started running. About 100 metres away from the finish line, he lay curled on the ground. His legs had simply given out.
Before Cerveny’s dad could reach his son, Brandon Schutt was at his side to offer a helping hand. The two completed the final 75 metres of the course. Schutt even made sure the injured runner crossed the finish line first, securing his opponent a faster time.
In today’s competitive world, while the emphasis in athletics is so often on breaking records, it is inspiring to see an athlete like Brandon Schutt.

Researchers have found that short and intense bursts of stair climbing, which can be done almost anywhere, have great benefits for fitness.
The findings make the two most common excuses of couch potatoes untrue: no time and no access to the gym. “Stair climbing is a form of exercise anyone can do in their own home, after work or during the lunch hour,” says Martin, a lead author of the study. “This research takes interval (间歇) training out of the lab and makes it accessible to everyone. ”
Early studies have shown the benefits of stair climbing over continuous periods of time—up to 70 minutes a week—but researchers wanted to determine if interval training, which includes short and intense exercise separated by short periods of recovery, was a good way to improve heart health.

For the second experiment, some women climbed up and down one flight of stairs for periods of 60 seconds, an experiment which could be easily done at home.

[重庆南开中学2021高一期末]阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was eight or nine years old, I wrote my first poem. My mother read the little poem and began to cry. “Buddy, you really wrote a beautiful, beautiful poem!” My mother poured out her praise. I glowed. “What time will Father be home?” I asked. I could hardly wait to show him what I had accomplished. My mother said she expected that he would be home at around seven. I spent the best part of that afternoon preparing for his arrival. First, I wrote the poem out in my finest flourish (花体字). Then I used coloured crayon (蜡笔) to draw an elaborate border around it that would do justice to its brilliant content. Then I waited. As 7 o’clock drew near, I confidently placed it right on my father’s plate on the dining room table.
But my father did not return at seven. I admired my father. He was the head of Paramount Studios in Hollywood but he had begun his motion picture career as a writer. He would be able to appreciate this wonderful poem of
mine even more than my mother.

This evening it was almost 8 o’clock when my father burst in. He was an hour late for dinner. His mood seemed thunderous. He could not sit down but circled the long dining room table with a drink in his hand, complaining about his employees.
Suddenly, he paused and stared at his plate. There was embarrassed silence. “What is this?” He was reaching for my poem. I lowered my head and stared down at my plate. I was full of anxious daydreams. How wonderful it would be if this very first work of mine drove away the angry clouds that now darkened my father’s face.
“Ben, a wonderful thing has happened,” my mother said. “Buddy has written his first poem! And it’s beautiful. ”
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to decide for myself,” Father said.
I kept my face lowered to my plate as he read that poem. It couldn't have taken very long to read that poem. It was only ten lines. But it seemed to take hours. I could hear him dropping the poem back on the table.

Now came the moment of decision. “I think it’s terrible,” he said. My eyes were getting wet. “Ben, sometimes I don’t understand you,” my mother was saying. “This is just a little boy. These are the first lines of poetry he’s ever written. He needs encouragement. ” “No one says Buddy has to become a poet. ” My father’s words hit me over the heart like a hard fist. I couldn’t stand another second. I ran from the dining room up to my room, threw myself on the bed and cried.
A few years later I took a second look at the first poem, and I had to agree with my father’s judgement. It was a pretty terrible poem. As I worked my way to other books, plays and films, it became clearer and clearer to me how fortunate I had been. I had a mother who said, “Buddy, you really wrote a beautiful, beautiful poem!” and a father who shook his head and drove me to tears with, “I think it’s terrible.” In fact, every one of us in life needs that mother force and father force. Between the two poles of praise and doubt, both in the name of love, I try to follow my true course.
