Four days before Christmas in 1968, Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders had an adventure out to the moon, becoming the first human beings to near and orbit our closest neighbour in space. On Christmas Eve, they pointed a TV camera out of the window of Apollo 8 and showed a global audience of one billion the ancient moon moving slowly below their spaceship. As that movie played, Anders began reading, “In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth…”
“I didn’t choose it,” he said, when all three astronauts met to mark the 50th anniversary of their moon flight, at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, where their spaceship is displayed.

When the three men returned to Earth on December 27, they were surrounded by a sea of joy. That kind of collective joy—born of collective effort—can seem beyond us now. From the factory floor to the three men in the spaceship, an estimated(估计)400,000 people had a hand in making the moon flight possible. Behind the joy there was also a dark danger Apollo 8 might face. If the astronauts made it into the moon orbit but their engine failed to fire when it was time to return, rescue would be impossible. They would circle the moon forever. But the astronauts did come home, and in the process they gave the world another gift: the celebrated photograph that came to be known as Earthrise.
Even fifty years later, Borman and Lovell continued to play jokes on Anders, 85 then.
“I’m still trying to figure out who did it,” said Borman, with a wink (眨眼睛).
“You did it, I think,” Lovell answered.
“William did it,” Borman admitted. “He didn’t want me to take it at first,” Anders said.
“I have never said it before publicly,” said Borman, “but I'm just proud that I was able to fly with these two talented guys. You did a really good job. ”

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, there was a large and magnificently brilliant star that shone across the young expanding universe. The light from that blue star travelled through space for billions of light years, and then one day a few thin beams crashed into a polished mirror—the light bucket of the Hubble Space Telescope.
In a report published on Wednesday in the journal Nature, a team of astronomers asserts that this is the most distant individual star ever seen. They describe it as 50 to 100 times more massive than our sun, and roughly 1 million times brighter, with its starlight having travelled 12.9 billion light years to reach the telescope.
The lead author of the report, Brian Welch, gave the star a name: Earendel, meaning “morning star”. “Earendel was found in a young galaxy known as the Sunrise Arc, and ‘morning star’ seemed appropriate,” Welch said.
“This is one of the major discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope in its 32 years of observation,” said Rogier Windhorst, a co author of the report. In recent decades, astronomers have seen galaxies at that distance, and even farther away, but galaxies are collections of billions of stars and the very distant ones have typically been nothing
more than smudges of light.

Despite its mass and brilliance, Earendel’s discovery would not have been possible were it not for the cosmic alignment. Between Hubble and the star lies a galaxy cluster, WHL0137 08, which is so huge that its mass wraps the fabric of space, creating the power of natural magnifying (放大) glass that magnifies the light from objects behind it, a phenomenon known as gravitational lensing (引力透镜效应). Earendel sits on or close to that space ripple, causing it to “pop out” from the general glow of its galaxy because the phenomenon magnified its brightness at least a thousandfold.
In interviews this week, several scientists who are not part of the Earendel team praised the discovery, noting that further observations could firm up the claim and potentially provide insights into the early evolution of stars.

[浙江金华2021高一期末]This is Scientific American’s “60 Second Science”. I am Christopher Intagliata.
The Apollo missions brought back 842 pounds of rock and soil from the moon, that is, nearly 2,200 different samples. But the most interesting one, according to a scientist named Meenakshi Wadhwa, is a sample named “Apollo 10085” collected by Neil Armstrong during the Apollo 11 mission.
“He was about to step back into the lunar module (登月舱) when he turned around and saw there was little space in the rock box. He knew that geologists on Earth would be just so excited to study these materials, so he just scooped up nine scoops (勺) of soil and put it into the box,” Wadhwa explained.
It was one of the most well studied samples of those collected during the Apollo missions. And a geologist named John Wood noticed white flecks (微粒) of rock in the soil, which inspired him to dig deeper into the moon’s ancient past.

“This was quite a leap of imagination—he proposed that the whole of the moon had been almost covered with a magma (岩浆) ocean nearly 4.5 billion years ago. This was a revolutionary idea at the time, because people had thought the moon had formed cold, so it completely changed our idea of how the moon formed.”
But Wadhwa has a more personal reason to appreciate this sample. She met her husband Scott Parazynski because of this rock sample. Scott, a mountaineer at that time, wanted to climb Mount Qomolangma with a moon rock while Wadhwa was the chairperson of the NASA Curation and Analysis Planning Team for Extraterrestrial Materials (CAPTEM) analysis group, which gave her access to the samples for scientific purposes.
Neil Armstrong’s last minute scoops of moon dust brought two people together here on Earth and upturned our understanding of how the moon—and the Earth itself—got here.

If asked whether space exploration should continue, most Americans would give an immediate response either in favour of continuing or in favour of ending space exploration. A common response would be that space exploration is a waste of money. An average American, uneducated on the subject, might believe that the government is wasting billions of dollars on the research that has no value. Someone ignorant of the subject might say that a space shuttle goes up once in a while and that is about all that happens. Research is ongoing and continues when there are no shuttles being launched. This also costs the government money. Does the extreme cost of space exploration make sense
One argument is that the government is wasting money on the research not being used on Earth. Actually, the money goes to workers and scientists that support National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) missions, and goes to major companies that play important roles in major sectors of the US economy. Boeing is a partner of NASA for aircraft, the same company that makes commercial aircraft for the airline industry.

Another benefit of continuing space exploration is the many spinoff technologies (衍生技术) it provides. The artificial heart resulted from experiments on the space shuttle. The handheld Jaws of Life used to save victims from car accidents originated from the system used to separate the space shuttle from its booster rockets (助推火箭). Insulation in homes that keeps them warm and energy efficient is based on the technology used to insulate the space shuttle.
There are direct benefits to the economy provided by NASA missions as well as spinoff technologies. These advances are found in food, building materials, medical procedures and the vehicles we drive. While it can be proved that billions of dollars that could be used elsewhere is being spent on space exploration, the benefits it provides outweigh the negative aspects. As a matter of fact, the money spent helps to improve the quality of our lives.

[全国新高考Ⅰ2022]Like most of us, I try to be mindful of food that goes to waste. The arugula (芝麻菜) was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roast chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with a dinner invitation. I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, the arugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; I could have made six salads with what I threw out.
In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, “food waste goes against the moral grain,” as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month’s cover story. It’s jaw dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown away—from “ugly” (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to large amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.
Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and other resources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem. In fact, Royte writes, “if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world.”

If that’s hard to understand, let’s keep it as simple as the arugula at the back of my refrigerator. Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time—but for him, it’s more like 12 boxes of donated strawberries nearing their last days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C., which recovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered more than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished (有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And the strawberries Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use in meals down the road.
Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don’t think. “Everyone can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more food than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not include the side dish you won’t eat,” Curtin says.

[山西2022学业水平考试]Role models are important for aspiring scientists, but new research suggests that scientists who are known for their hard work are more encouraging than scientists who are viewed as naturally brilliant.
In a series of studies, researchers found that young people were more motivated by scientists whose success was connected with efforts than those whose success was because of natural intelligence, even if that scientist was Albert Einstein.
Danfei Hu, a doctoral student at the Pennsylvania State University, and Janet N. Ahn, an assistant professor of Psychology at William Paterson University, said the findings—recently published in Basic and Applied Social Psychology—will help deal with the certain secret about what it takes to succeed in science.
According to the researchers, there is concern in the science community with the number of students who run after careers in science during school only to drop out of those career paths once they graduate from college. To help solve the problem, Hu and Ahn wanted to research role models, who give the students specific goals, behaviour or
strategies they can follow.

The researchers performed studies with 176 and 162 participants in each, respectively. In the first study, all participants read the same story about common struggles a scientist met in his science career. However, half were told the story was about Einstein, while half were told it was about Thomas Edison. Although the stories were the same, participants were more likely to believe natural brilliance was the reason for Einstein’s success. In addition, the participants who believed the story was about Edison were more motivated to complete a series of maths problems.
“This proved that people generally seem to view Einstein as a genius, with his success commonly linked to extraordinary talent,” Hu said. “Edison, on the other hand, is known for failing more than 1,000 times when trying to create the light bulb, and his success is linked to his efforts.” Hu added, “Knowing that something great can be achieved through hard work and efforts, more students will step into the science career confidently.”

Recently we have held a heated discussion about the issue whether mankind should explore space or not. Different people have different opinions.
Some people hold the view that space exploration will not only enable us to understand how the universe develops but also help farming by doing agricultural experiments and apply the new technology to our life. While other people argue that we should stop exploring space because it costs too much time and money.
From my point of view, it is very necessary for humans to explore space, because it not only can provide the world with many different benefits, but also can solve people’s short term and long term problems.
