[陕西延安2021高二期末]In the 19th century, one of America's greatest writers, Walt Whitman, helped people learn to value poetry.Whitman created a new kind of poetry.
Walt Whitman was born in 1819 in New York City.During his long life, he watched America grow from a young nation to a strong industrial power in the world. As a young man, Whitman worked as a school teacher, a printer and a newspaper reporter. He was 36 years old when he published his first book of poetry in 1855.He called it Leaves of Grass. It has only 12 poems. The poems are written in free verse. The lines do not follow any set form. Some lines are short. Some are long. The words at the end of each line do not have a similar sound. They do not rhyme.
One of America’s greatest thinkers and writers immediately recognised the importance of Leaves of Grass. It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who praised Whitman's works. But most other poets and writers said nothing and even denounced it.Most readers also rejected Whitman's poems. The new form of his poetry surprised many people.Even his own brother told Whitman that he should stop writing poetry. But Whitman had many things to say.And he continued to say them.Readers began to understand that America had a great new poetic voice.
Walt Whitman’s poems praise the United States and its democracy. The poet expressed his love for America and its people in many ways.Experts today praise Leaves of Grass as a major literary work.In 1873, Walt Whitman suffered a stroke. He spent the last years of his life in Camden, New Jersey.Whitman was poor and weak during the last years of his life.He died in 1892.Some critics say Walt Whitman was a spokesman for democracy.Others say he was not a spokesman for anything.Instead, they simply call him a great poet.

[湖南湖湘教育三新探索协作体2021高二联考]I am in seventh grade language arts class in an upstairs room in the old red brick junior high school building. The afternoon sunlight streams through high windows that face the playground. It is the day I remember hearing this phrase for the first time: “the little/lame balloon man”.
It’s from “in Just ”, the E. E. Cummings’ poem we are reading. Mr Katz is trying to let our adolescent imaginations run wild to the point where we might appreciate figurative language. There are expressions like “when the world is mud luscious”, and then “when the world is puddle wonderful”.Something begins to grow in me as a reader: the mixture of descriptive words and words expressing action.
Words would be and do what they describe! I’d like to think Mr Katz was conspiring with the poem, the sun, the spring and the kid energy, not just a lesson plan. From then on, I was a new reader and writer. I look back on that poem as a starting line, and I have heard the call of poetry.

I would see “in Just ” in nearly every poem in my language arts life. It is in my very old “The Pocket Book of Modern Verse”, edited by Oscar Williams and in “An Introduction to Poetry”, by X.J.Kennedy. I begin to understand that a poet is describing the world, experiences, or concepts in a way that provides antidotes to dullness, commonness, and indifference. “Poetry provides the one permissible way of saying one thing and meaning another,” Robert Frost explained.
Reading poems becomes a daily practice. I collect my own favourite expressions of life’s joy and sufferings. I'm fond of Billy Collins' view: “The history of poetry is the only surviving history we have of human emotion. It is the history of the human heart. There is no other one.”
The special poems always lead me back to my memory of a sunny classroom, in junior high school when Mr Katz carefully brought us into a new field—a moment that got me out of middle school mundanity. Even the dance on Friday and my drum lesson on Wednesday afternoon paled in comparison. I am addicted to poetry.
