[浙江杭州2022高二联考]We’ve heard many stories of individuals across the world who've adopted a zero waste lifestyle, but it's not often that we come across an entire community trying to become waste free. The residents of Kamikatsu, Japan took recycling so seriously that they actually hoped to become the nation's first zero waste community by 2020.
Kamikatsu has no garbage trucks, so residents need to compost (把……制成堆肥) their kitchen trash at home. They also have to wash and sort the rest of their trash into 34 different categories, and bring it to the recycling centre themselves where workers make sure the waste goes into the correct bins.It obviously took some time for the residents to get used to this rule, but they eventually managed to adapt to the strict changes and they are now seeing them as normal.

Reuse is highly encouraged in Kamikatsu—it has local kuru kuru shops where residents can exchange used items with new things at no extra cost. Businesses are also encouraged to participate in responsible waste management.
A Kamikatsu resident said, “It can be a pain, and at first we were opposed to the idea. Now I don’t think about it. It’s become natural to separate the trash correctly.”

[河南新乡2022高二期末]In a paper published in Nature Communications, a team led by scientists from the University of California, using climate models and satellite data, reveal for the first time how protecting tropical forests can yield climate benefits that enhance carbon storage in nearby areas.
Many climate scientists use computer simulations (模拟的环境) to mimic the planet’s climate as it exists today and how it may exist in the future as humanity keeps emitting greenhouse gases.Such models rely on accurate measurement of all the moving parts of the climate system, from how much sunlight hits and warms the climate, to the response of forest biomass (生物量), to changes in temperature, rainfall and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.
Jim Randerson, UCI professor of Earth system science, said, “This paper shows that avoiding deforestation (滥伐森林) yields carbon benefits in nearby regions as a consequence of climate feedbacks.”

He explained that for a new patch of deforestation in the Amazon, the regional climate changes that happen as a result led to an additional 5.1% more loss of total biomass in the entire Amazon Basin. In the Congo Basin, the additional biomass loss from the climate effects of deforestation is about 3.8%. Tropical forests store about 200 petagrammes of carbon in their above ground biomass.Since 2010, deforestation has been removing about 1 petagramme of that carbon every year. (One petagramme is equal to 1 trillion kilogrammes.)
Until now, climate modellers have, for lack of data, not considered tree mortality (死亡率) in their climate simulations. But by combining satellite data with climate variables, they obtained information about how sensitive carbon stored in vegetation is to climatic changes that result from tree mortality and fire.

Now, news reports say that a team of scientists from Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, and the UK has published the most detailed data yet on the continent’s subglacial topography (冰川下的地形) near the South Pole.
As they report in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, central Antarctica is home to three large canyons (峡谷), one of which is deeper than the Grand Canyon and nearly as wide at some points. The researchers made the discovery by flying a plane with radar over the South Pole, a spot that isn't covered by satellites. They expected to find mountains beneath the ice sheets, but the wide canyons they found between the mountains came as a surprise.

The discoveries are significant on their own, but the real purpose behind the research is to better understand how the West and East Antarctic ice sheets will react to rising temperatures. Human caused climate change has made some of the continent’s ice not firm, and the West Antarctic ice sheets especially have been slowly melting into the sea. If patterns continue, the coastal glaciers supporting the large ice sheets could fall down, causing sea levels to rise a minimum of 10 feet. If this happens, the canyons could be a major factor in the speed and direction of ice flow from central Antarctica to the coast.
The event isn’t likely to happen in the near future, but further studies of Antarctica's topography will allow scientists to better predict when it might happen.

Light pollution is blocking a starry view of the night sky for more than half of people across England, research has found.
Fifty seven percent of stargazers (观星者) struggled to see more than 10 stars, while just 2% of participants said they experienced a truly dark sky, making them able to count more than 30, according to the research by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).People in the countryside were encouraged to count how many stars they could see with eyes within the constellation (星座) of Orion, which is visible only in the winter months.
Campaigners said the results of the star count, supported by the British Astronomical Association, showed the problem of light pollution and how it affected one of the countryside’s most magical sights—a dark, starry night sky. They said the results of the research to map England’s night skies suggested more could be done by the government, local councils and the general public to reduce the negative effects of artificial light from streets and buildings.

[福建福州八校2022高二期末联考]Japan is a nation that appreciates the virtues of silence and good manners. Yet, when it comes to eating noodles, Japanese people can be the loudest in the world.
According to the lifestyle website Grapee.jp, slurping (发出啧啧声) when eating noodles is encouraged in Japanese culture. It's believed that taking air into your mouth can enhance (提高) the flavour of the noodles and help cool down the food. It's also considered to be a way to show appreciation for the dish. Sometimes, just making the noise alone seems to make eating noodles more enjoyable.
It was not until a new expression—“noodle harassment”—came out on social media that Japanese people started to realise the problem. They found that the slurping noise was making some foreign visitors uncomfortable.

The fork looks like an electric toothbrush. It is connected wirelessly to a smartphone. When the person using the fork starts to slurp, the fork will send a signal to the person's phone. Then the phone will play a sound to mask the slurping noise.
But is it really necessary Dining traditions and table manners do vary. In India, people eat with their hands. They think they build a connection with food in this way. However, people who are used to eating with forks might find it unacceptable to get their hands covered in oil or sauce. But this eating method is part of India's culture, just like Japan’s slurping is part of its own.

It was a Monday and Khan, a pet dog, had joined the family the previous Friday. He had already decided that two year old Charlotte was his No.1 girl. The dog had seldom left her side since arriving at his new home.
Khan was next to Charlotte when Catherine took her into the garden for some fresh air. ” I was just in the house doing the boring household chores and Charlotte wanted to go outside and run round,” she says. “We were just walking round the garden looking at flowers and all that good stuff. Khan was with her.”
Charlotte was soon tired of playing in the garden and then went to play the padlock on the gate. “She was beating the padlock and it was banging on the gate,” Catherine recalls. She thought Khan, who was naturally right next to Charlotte, might be disturbed by the loud noise, but he seemed undisturbed by it. That was until, entirely without warning, he became very upset indeed.
“Khan suddenly started making this noise from the depths of his chest, this growl,” she says. “His whole
chest puffed up, his hair stood up, and he lowered his head. He continued to make this growl.”

As Catherine watched, Khan seemed to double in size. “He kept trying to push her. I was right next to Charlotte—no more than a metre away and I thought, ‘He’s going to hurt her.’ His chest was bigger than before,” she says.
Time seemed to slow down as Catherine rushed desperately to save her daughter. But Khan got to Charlotte first. He grabbed her by the back of her clothes and threw her over his shoulder into the garden. ”I turned and looked and she was just sitting there in a pile of grass.” Still not certain whether Khan’s strange behaviour was some sort of attack on her child, Catherine raced to pick up Charlotte, who was completely unharmed, and take her inside for safety. Just as she turned to run into the house, Catherine saw a big brown snake bite Khan right in the chest and slid away quickly.

Khan screamed in pain and at the same moment, Catherine understood all. Khan noticed a snake going to bite little Charlotte, and Khan's action that seemed violent at first was really an attempt to save the girl’s life. Although his brave action was performed just in time to take Charlotte away from the snake, he instead was bitten a few moments later.
Khan needed immediate medical help, so Catherine called a vet in no time. Thanks to the vet who recovered Khan by giving him an anti venom shot. If Khan had not stepped in at the right moment, the poisonous snake would have been likely to strike Catherine's daughter instead. Although it was only four days Khan had lived with this new family, this hero still knew the right thing to do, and he protected Charlotte’s life. The family planned to give Khan his deserved home as a way of paying him back for the love he showed to their family in such a wonderful way.
