Sam is a fourth year student at Harvard Medical School, but poetry is still a big part of his life, now with a new teacher, Rafael Campo, who believes poetry can benefit every doctor’s education and work. Rafael is a physician, professor and a highly respected poet.
“Poetry is in every encounter (邂逅) with my patients. I think healing is really in a very great way about poetry. And if we do anything when we’re with our patients, we’re really immersing (使沉浸于) ourselves in their stories, really hearing their voices. And, certainly, that’s what a poem does,” he said.
Rafael worries that something important has been lost in medicine and medical education today: humanity, which he finds in poetry. To end that, he leads a weekly reading and writing workshop for medical students and residents (住院医生).
Part Ⅱ 拓展阅读训练

He thinks medical training focuses too much on distancing the doctor from his or her patients, and poems can help close that gap.
Third year resident Andrea Schwartz was one of the workshop regulars. She said, “I think there’s no other profession other than medicine that produces as many writers as it does. And I think that is because there’s just so much power in doctors and patients interacting when patients are at their saddest.” Not everyone believes that’s what doctors should do, though.
Rafael said, “I was afraid of how people might judge me, actually. In the medical profession, as many people know, we must always put the emergency first. But, you know, that kind of treatment, if it’s happening in the hospital, very regrettably, sadly, results in a bad outcome. The family is sitting by the bedside. The patient hasn’t survived the cancer. Don’t we still have a role as healers there ”
In a poem titled “Health”, Rafael writes of the wish to live forever in a world made painless by our incurable joy. He says he will continue teaching students, helping patients and writing poems, his own brand of medicine.

In China, poetry is an important part of the curriculum and, with recent changes announced by the Ministry of Education, the number of poems students will have to memorise and recite is being increased from fourteen to seventy two. Now, before you gasp in horror, let's think about the reasons why studying so many poems, especially ancient poems, is important.First of all, poetry is an essential part of traditional Chinese culture. __1__ It is also the key to understanding the thoughts and emotions that are common to everyone but which we may be unable to express—the joy of Li Bai dancing with the moon, for example. Everyone has feelings of joy, love, loneliness, sadness and even anger.__2__

__3__ In a few short lines, even something commonplace can become beautiful. Here is a poem called “Fog” by Carl Sandburg: The fog comes/on little cat feet… on silent haunches/and then moves on. Yes, fog does move smoothly, silently and mysteriously like a cat, and Sandburg captures that feeling and image, and makes it beautiful.
__4__ After all, a poem is really just a song without music. Most ancient poetry, especially Western poetry, was actually spoken before it was written. Take Homer's Iliad for example. The story was apparently told for hundreds of years in palaces and on street corners before Homer wrote it down. The American poet Robert Frost said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” And poems are very concise—there is not a wasted word. __5__

[黑龙江大庆实验中学2022高二月考]In 1867 when Canada was created, a towering Silver Maple tree standing in front of Alexander Muir’s house in Toronto gave him an idea. He would write a poem and a song about the great tree, so common in Canada and so symbolic, to celebrate Canada’s Confederation (联邦).
His song was called The Maple Leaf Forever and it has been the unofficial Canadian anthem (国歌) to this day.
However, during a major storm, the tree was knocked down. It fell across a house and a street. But because it was an important historic tree, most of the wood was saved rather than being destroyed.
Woodworkers at the Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto, a community project centre, cut the wood into logs and other usable pieces. The pieces were given to artists to create about 150 different projects.

[湖南湖湘教育三新探索协作体2021高二联考] I am in seventh grade language arts class in an upstairs room in the old red brick junior high school building. The afternoon sunlight streams through high windows that face the playground. It is the day I remember hearing this phrase for the first time: “the little/lame balloon man”.
It’s from “in Just ”, the E. E. Cummings’ poem we are reading. Mr Katz is trying to let our adolescent imaginations run wild to the point where we might appreciate figurative language. There are expressions like “when the world is mud luscious”, and then “when the world is puddle wonderful”. Something begins to grow in me as a reader: the mixture of descriptive words and words expressing action.
Words would be and do what they describe! I’d like to think Mr Katz was conspiring with the poem, the sun, the spring and the kid energy, not just a lesson plan. From then on, I was a new reader and writer. I look back on that poem as a starting line, and I have heard the call of poetry.

I would see “in Just ” in nearly every poem in my language arts life. It is in my very old “The Pocket Book of Modern Verse”, edited by Oscar Williams and in “An Introduction to Poetry”, by X. J. Kennedy. I begin to understand that a poet is describing the world, experiences, or concepts in a way that provides antidotes to dullness, commonness, and indifference. “Poetry provides the one permissible way of saying one thing and meaning another,” Robert Frost explained.
Reading poems becomes a daily practice. I collect my own favourite expressions of life's joy and sufferings. I’m fond of Billy Collins’ view: “The history of poetry is the only surviving history we have of human emotion. It is the history of the human heart. There is no other one.”
The special poems always lead me back to my memory of a sunny classroom, in junior high school when Mr Katz carefully brought us into a new field—a moment that got me out of middle school mundanity. Even the dance on Friday and my drum lesson on Wednesday afternoon paled in comparison. I am addicted to poetry.

[辽宁省实验中学2022高二期中]While every dog owner knows their dogs can read their moods perfectly, scientists have always been a little doubtful. Now thanks to some researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, we finally have some convincing evidence.
For their study, biologist Corson Miller and his team exposed eleven selected dogs to digital images of women that were either angry or happy. Half the dogs were rewarded for touching the screen when shown a happy face, while the other half got their treat for selecting those that appeared angry.
Interestingly, although the scientists believe humans show their emotions on their entire face, the dogs were not provided with the entire one. Some dogs were shown only upper halves while the others observed lower halves. After some training like how to recognise small differences like the wrinkles between the eyes or the changes in their shape that accompany the happy or angry expressions, the dogs were mostly able to identify the correct expression not only on a familiar face but on a strange face. The researchers concluded the dogs were smart enough to read human emotions.

They also found those being trained to read angry expressions took longer to learn. They guess it may be because dogs find angry faces disgusting, causing them to retreat (后退) quickly. However, once the smart dogs realised they were getting rewarded, the trepidation seemed to disappear. In fact, the dogs had such a good time playing the computer “game” that scientists had a hard time keeping them away from the touch screens after the study was completed.
The researchers also noticed only dogs with a male owner had a harder time understanding the expressions correctly. Since the touch screen models were all females, this confirmed what had been observed in previous studies—dogs are more efficient at reading facial expressions of people that are the same gender as their owner.

You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self confidence.

That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs Brown always corrected the mistakes he had made and gave him good advice on improving writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it.He was no longer that boy who lacked self confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognised him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realised that she shouldn’t have called her son a stupid boy, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I'll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.
