[山西长治二中2022高二期中]Have you ever heard someone say “You totally look like you’re a Jessica” or something similar People seem to think that they know what kind of person a “Jessica” or a “Michael” looks like. Why is this
According to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, humans tend to associate people’s names with their appearances, and can even guess someone’s name based on how they look.
Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, collected thousands of photos of people’s faces. They labelled (贴标签于) each photo with four names. Then, they asked volunteers to guess which of the four names was correct.
The volunteers were able to choose the right name 38% of the time. It seems that certain characteristics of faces give them clues about someone’s name, Reader’s Digest reported.

However, this only worked when the volunteers looked at names from their own culture. In addition, the volunteers were not good at guessing the real names of people who used nicknames more often than their real names. This may show that a person’s appearance is affected by their name only if they use it often.
“This kind of face name matching happens because of a process of self fulfilling prophecy (预言), as we become what other people expect us to become, ” Ruth Mayo from the university told the science news website EurekAlert.
Earlier studies have shown that gender and race stereotypes (刻板印象) can affect a person’s appearance. The researchers believe there are also similar stereotypes about names. For example, people tend to think that men named Bob should have rounder faces because the word itself looks round. People may think that women named Rose are beautiful. They expect them to be “delicate” and “female”, just like the flower they are named for.

It has become a habit for many of us.When you’re tired of online shopping, you head to the bathroom to do your best make up for the perfect selfie (自拍照) for Meta, Instagram, Snapchat or all of the above. When you’re ready, you hold up your phone and, in an instant, snap (拍照).
But have you ever wondered what’s behind your burning desire to self document Most people would say that this is a way to express themselves and perhaps make them become more confident about themselves. But the moment you upload that picture, it’s no longer yours to judge. Instead, you pass on that power to the online world.
While you may think that your growing collection of selfies attracts people, quite the opposite may be true. A recent study was conducted on a total of 238 people in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. 77% of the people surveyed admitted to regularly taking selfies. Interestingly, 82% of the people said that they would rather see fewer selfies on social media. In other words, we like taking selfies but seriously dislike looking at other people’s selfies online.

This research finds that there is a big difference between how we see our own selfies and how we judge other people’s pictures. It suggests that we are comfortable with the selfies we post since we believe they are obviously not artificial or vain, but we think everyone else is an egoist (自我主义者) for doing the very same thing. After all, we are able to separate our own selfies from the sea of them online and naturally think that ours are the only authentic ones.
So, next time you reach for your phone and take a selfie, consider this: The people around you may not need another carefully planned snap of your face. Instead, you might be better off giving it a break and calling off the selfie today. While you’re at it, make sure you never post these pictures on social media either.

[辽宁六校协作体2021高二开学考试]Digital health refers to the system of interconnected devices that can monitor and report important health information. Doctors can use that information to ensure that your treatment is tailor made to your situation.
The most useful aspect of digital health is the ability to constantly and accurately monitor vital information. Wearable devices can record your blood pressure or the rhythm of your heartbeat. The information is then accessible remotely through the Internet, so your doctor has a wealth of information about your daily health.Your doctor can use that information remotely to make changes to your treatment at any time.
A poll (民意调查) carried out by the company Lightico in March 2020 reveals how satisfied consumers are with this type of remote care. Forty one per cent said that the remote treatment they had received by means of digital devices and the Internet was either “good” or “excellent”. The same positive attitude towards digital health can be seen among investors. In the first quarter of 2020, 3.1 billion dollars in new investment was poured into the digital health industry, setting a new investment record.
Advances in digital health, however, also bring privacy concerns. Information as regards your health
could be used for advertising or marketing, for example. If health records are accessible online, protecting
your information from theft and unauthorised use might be difficult. But if managed properly, the benefits of
digital health could certainly outweigh the risks.

[北京西城区2022高二期末]We often work to save the most charismatic (有超凡魅力的) species in the world. Is it time to think beyond pandas and tigers
Take a good look at the American burying beetle. Today it is assessed as critically endangered. Like the tiger, the beetle is decreasing in number. The tiger is an instantly recognisable symbol of species conservation, but most people aren’t familiar with the beetle.
This phenomenon is called the domination of flagship species—the charismatic creatures such as tigers that organisations use to increase support and funding for conservation. That’s largely because humans are attracted to large bodied animals with forward facing eyes and human like traits that make such species more relatable. As a result, many less well known organisms fail to get the support and funding to ensure their survival even though they play an important role in the ecosystem.
Which species could be saved They may not charm us with fuzzy paws and puppy dog eyes, but many ignored species deserve some love. The world needs to better recognise the contributions of these underdogs rather
than “only spending money on cool species, ” says conservation scientist Bob Smith.
Part Ⅲ 单元限时作业
Exercise 1 刷阅读理解
I suspect that most of us who care about animals could agree on this: Charisma is in the eye of the beholder. In that case, can’t we broaden the list of animals considered popular and even beautiful Bob Smith says we can—and there’s a name for them: Cinderella species. These are mostly threatened animals that are still very popular with the public yet are typically overlooked as flagships. Smith is convinced that “Less well known and less popular species can still be good flagships with more marketing effort.”
In a recent study, Smith settled another myth about poster animals that they don’t help publicise the world's most species rich and threatened places.A prioritisation (优先次序) model Smith created showed that hot spots of the most important conservation worldwide also are home to more than 500 flagship and Cinderella species, and that drawing more attention to Cinderella species could boost funding and public campaigns for habitat protection.
Let’s be clear, though: It’s still OK to root for pandas and tigers. “The reason I got into conservation is that I liked these species,” Smith says. “That is fair enough. But it’s our job as conservationists to try to inspire people to love other species too.”
