[河南焦作2022高二期末]From vibrant, culture filled cities to peaceful areas of outstanding natural beauty, the UK is a diverse destination for travellers. Here are some of the best places to visit in the UK.
Norwich, Norfolk
With 31 surviving medieval (中世纪的) churches, Norwich is an easily overlooked historical treasure.Roadside signs read “A Fine City” and the reason is pretty obvious. The pubs are among the best in English, with the oldest Adam & Eve dating back to 1249. And with an annual arts festival taking place every May, its modern cultural offerings make it far more than a museum piece.
Dungeness, Kent
Dungeness, the only place designated as a desert in the UK, is completely unique.Located on the Kent coast, its windswept beaches and inland nature reserve, coupled with big skies and sea air, make it the perfect place to spend an afternoon getting the freshest air imaginable. The coastal village with the same name is something of a time wrap (时空错位), with a railway ferrying passengers along the coast to the town of Hythe.

Manchester
Northern England’s cities often get unfairly crowded together, but there’s a distinctiveness between Leeds, Bradford, Liverpool and Manchester that makes them all worth a visit. It’s the latter, though, that’s the big hitter. The vibrant Northern Quarter is great for shopping, while places such as Bridgewater Hall, Home and the Albert Hall make it the place for culture lovers. Forget complaints about the wet weather in England; Manchester is the real deal.
Glasgow
It’s easy to overlook Glasgow, which is the charm of Edinburgh. But as Scotland’s largest city it easily matches the capital when it comes to architecture, art and culture. The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is world class, while the West End’s shops and bars are the perfect places to spend a relaxing afternoon. With a thriving music scene and top restaurants like the award winning Stravaigin, it’s undoubtedly one of the country’s best destinations for a city break.

[山东师大附中2021高二期中]My mother is the most important person in my life and she means the whole world to me. She was a nurse at Stony Brook University Hospital and she always took the night shift so that she could come home in time to drive me to school. She’d sleep during the day and be ready when I returned home before heading out again in the evening. This went on for 23 years. She never complained. No matter how tired she was, she always had enough energy to be my mum.
She often had to work on Christmas, Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve, and sometimes Thanksgiving, which made me upset. However, before holidays she always decorated the inside and outside of our house. She’d also have cookies baking in the oven, a holiday themed movie in the VCR, and music playing throughout our house for me. But when it was time to go to work, there was no room for debate. “Why do you have to work on this day of all days ” I’d ask sadly. “They need me, too, dear son,” she’d respond, compassion in her tone.

The scenes I saw in the hospital made me see the different side of my mother. The nurses checked heart, blood and oxygen levels, and made sure patients were comfortable. They lifted patients in and out of bed and helped them to the bathroom. Beyond their duties, the nurses displayed consideration for each patient.
What I saw helped me to understand why my mother was devoted to her occupation. I was filled with more admiration for my mother.

[全国新高考Ⅱ2022] As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don’t exercise, the changes can start even sooner.
“Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,”says Dr.Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of nonaerobic (无氧) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.
综合测试卷
第一部分 阅读
“We took these 50 year old hearts and turned the clock back to 30 or 35 year old hearts,” says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump (泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says.
“The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says. “We put healthy 70 year olds through a yearlong exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all.”
Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.

The Milky Way is our galactic (银河的) home, but it contains many mysteries scientists are working to uncover. Now, as The Guardian reports, astronomers at the European Space Agency (ESA) have built a 3D map that provides the most detailed look at our galaxy yet.
The data had been seven years in the making by 2020. In 2013, the ESA launched its Gaia Space Observatory from Kourou in French Guiana. Since then, two high powered telescopes aboard the spacecraft have been sweeping the skies, recording the locations, movements, and changes in brightness of more than a billion stars in the Milky Way and beyond.
Using Gaia’s findings, astronomers put together a 3D map that allows scientists to study the galaxy in greater depth than ever before. The data has made it possible to measure the acceleration (加速度) of the solar system. By comparing the solar system’s movement to that of more remote objects in space, researchers have determined that the solar system is slowly falling towards the centre of the galaxy at an acceleration of 7 millimetres per second per year, The Guardian reports. Additionally, the map shows how matter is distributed throughout the Milky Way. With this information, scientists should be able to measure the mass of the Milky Way.

第一部分 阅读
Gaia’s observations may also hold clues to the Milky Way’s past and future. The data holds small remaining parts of the 10 billion year old disc (圆盘) that made up the edge of the star system. By comparing it to the shape of the Milky Way today, astronomers have determined that the disc will continue to expand as new stars are created.
The Gaia observatory was launched with the mission of gathering an updated star census. The previous one was conducted in 1957, and Gaia’s new data reaches four times farther and accounts for 100 times more stars.

Although he had protested, his parents insisted that spending time on the farm would be a great experience for him. They grew up on a farm and believed that responsibility, hard work, and respect for the land were valuable lessons.
“So, have you ever ridden a horse ” Aunt Letty asked, trying to turn his attention away from his phone. “Hmmm… No,” he answered. “Well, we’ve got a nice calm horse I think you’ll like. Hercules—sounds like a beast, but he’s basically a gentle giant—big, but kind hearted!” she said, smiling. John looked at his aunt with wide eyes, annoyed that he was expected to work.He tried to text a friend but there was no cell reception.
The next few days were busy. The crow of the roosters woke them up, and they had breakfast before dawn. Then they went out to the barn to get the feed while the animals waited to be fed. The afternoons were filled with transporting hay, cleanup, and caring for the animals. At dusk, when the farm was finally quiet, Aunt Letty stretched her arms out and inhaled (吸气), “Just take a deep breath of that sweet country air!” John, exhausted from his chores, was unable to appreciate his work.

On the third day, without warning, Aunt Letty announced, “It’s time to meet Hercules.” She led John into the stables (马厩). Aunt Letty was right. Hercules was remarkable!
Aunt Letty held her hand open for John to take.Reluctantly, he let her guide his hand towards Hercules and allowed the magnificent creature to sniff his palm. Softly, Hercules rubbed its nose and mouth against him.
“It feels like velvet (天鹅绒)!” John beamed (眉开眼笑). An hour later, John was scratching Hercules on his neck and offering him carrots.
That night, as they headed towards the house, John was inspired. His arms spreading wide, he inhaled and said, “Take a breath of that sweet country air!”

The next morning, John found Aunt Letty waiting outside with Hercules. Running towards them with excitement, John asked Aunt Letty if he could take a ride with her and she nodded approval. So John sat in front of Aunt Letty and they headed slowly towards the riverbank nearby. On arrival, John was totally absorbed in the picturesque scenery: The flowing water twinkled in the sunlight. The banks were lined with willows, gently swinging in the wind.A refreshing breeze was blowing gently.John closed his eyes, breathing in the earthy smell of soil and appreciating the birdsong. A sense of peace he had never experienced in the city swept over him then.
Fascinated by the breathtaking scenery in the countryside, John obviously changed a lot after the ride. He no longer frowned at work but fulfilled his assigned tasks on the farm devotedly instead. When the farm was finally quiet, he would ride Hercules with Aunt Letty, wandering around the beautiful farmland and breathing the sweet country air. Soon, it was time for John to say goodbye. He stroked Hercules on the neck softly, hugged Aunt Letty and said, “My parents are right. The life here is a great experience for me. Could I spend my next spring break here ” Aunt Letty smiled and said yes.
