[全国乙2022]In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N.Y.—Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood—traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted:The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff's granddaughter.
Why did they go then Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.

They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead. A hair raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: “When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.”

[河北邢台卓越联盟2022高二月考]My college roommate and I decided to decorate our dormitory. We thought that coloured lights would be perfect. But having none, we painted all of our light bulbs red. When we turned the lights on, the room shone with a dark and blood red light.
I learnt a couple of things about painted light bulbs. I learnt, first, that one can’t study by red lighting. Not that studying was the most important for us, but the dark red bulbs were of no help. And very quickly I learnt something else: Paints burn. Smoke from our bulbs sent us outside for breath.
Coloured bulbs may be nice to look at, but they don’t give much light. We put up coloured lights as decoration. They are designed to call attention to themselves, but never to light a room. We might say, “Aren‘t they pretty ” But we do not use them to illuminate (照亮) an area.Clear lights, on the other hand, show off all that is nearby. We may put a directional light on a wall and said, “What a lovely painting!”
Clear lights illuminate the world around us. I wonder if people are like lights, too. We may speak of someone, “Isn’t she smart She always amazes me with her brilliance.” And of another we might say, “I always feel better when he is around. He seems to know me.And he believes in me.”
It is as if one shines so brilliantly that the room is filled with a colourful light. But the other shines on
those nearby, clearly illuminating their goodness. If I were to be a light in this world, I think I would lose the

[广东新高考普通高中2022高二联合质检]Sleeping with a dim light like a television or nightlight is enough to raise the blood sugar and heart rates of healthy people, according to a new study. Light helps our body maintain an internal clock, but artificial light at night can interrupt the rest and repair that should happen during the sleep. New research suggests that even when our eyes are closed, a small amount of light can disrupt the way our bodies normally keep our blood sugar within a healthy range.
In the study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday, scientists asked 20 participants aged 19 to 36 to spend two nights in their lab. On the first night of sleep, the volunteers slept in a very dark room. For their second night of sleep, half of the group snoozed with a small light like the glow of television at night, or streetlights through a window—and half spent their second night in a dark room.
During the trial, all participants were connected to devices that measured different markers of their sleep quality. They were each connected via a special tube, allowing researchers to collect samples without waking the individual. Researchers also recorded participants’ heart rates and brainwaves.
Part Ⅲ 单元限时作业
Exercise 1 刷阅读理解
When the volunteers awoke in the morning, the team tested their blood sugar and found that participants that slept in rooms with a dim light spent less time in a deep sleep. In addition to having slightly worse blood sugar control, the group exposed to dim light had a higher heart rate on average. “By comparison, those that spend two nights sleeping in the dark room had little difference in their blood sugar control. You thought you slept well, but your brain knows that the lights are on,” says Zee. “You should clearly pay attention to the light in your bedroom. If you can’t give up your night light, keep it dim and at floor level.”
Earlier work has linked exposure to light during sleep to an increased risk of obesity in women. Zee recommends making sure that you start dimming your lights at least an hour or two before you go to bed to prepare your environment for sleep.
