[吉林长春外国语学校2022高二期中]Discoveries at the famous Sanxingdui Ruins in Southwest China show that the region’s ancient Shu civilisation shared similarities with ancient Maya civilisation.
The Sanxingdui Ruins belongs to the ancient Shu Kingdom that existed at least 4,800 years ago and lasted more than 2,000 years, while the Maya civilisation built its city states around 200 AD.
The bronze made remains of trees unearthed at the ruins of the ancient Shu Kingdom resemble the sacred ceiba tree, which symbolises the union of heaven, earth and the underworld in the Maya civilisation. “They are very important similarities,” says Santos, a Mexican archaeologist (考古学家) stressing that “the representations of trees in both cultures provide the symbolism that is very similar”.
The findings at the Sanxingdui Ruins, considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, also show a new aspect of Bronze Age culture, indicating the ancient civilisation already had technologies that were thought to have been developed much later.
Part Ⅱ 拓展阅读训练
刷阅读理解
While the time span between the ancient Shu Kingdom and the Maya is great, the findings highlight the closeness between the two civilisations. They developed in areas with comparable climates and reflected their world view through related symbols. “In the end, man is still man, independent of time and space. What we have is that, at this latitude (纬度), both the Shu people and the Mayans looked at the same sky and had the same stars on the horizon,” the expert says.
One notable feature of the recent discoveries at Sanxingdui was the cross subject work and technology applied by teams of Chinese archaeologists, which allowed the unearthing of artefacts as fragile as silk remains, which other types of less careful digging methods would not have been able to register.
Cooperation between Chinese and Mexican archaeologists could benefit projects in Maya, where the rainy climate and humidity are problematic for the conservation of ruins.
“Every time our cultural knowledge increases, regardless of whether we speak the same language or not, what it shows us is that we continue to be sister cultures and, therefore, the exchange of such knowledge
is fundamental,” says Santos.

[陕西西安2022高二期末]The lack of clues left behind by ancient Americans has made it difficult for researchers to determine precisely when humans first arrived on the continent. However, it has always been believed to be about 13,000 years ago. Now, evidence from the Chiquihuite Cave in Zacatecas, Central Mexico, seems to suggest that prehistoric humans may have been living in North America as early as 30,000 years ago.
Dr Ciprian Ardelean, from the Autonomous University of Zacatecas, who led the groundbreaking research, first became aware of the cave in May 2010. Getting to the cave located 2,750 metres above sea level required a 45 minute truck ride to the base and an uphill climb over a rough terrain. However, Dr Ardelean and his team found enough clues to make the difficult journey three additional times—in 2012, 2016, and 2017.
The archaeologists’ efforts revealed many artefacts including over 1,900 stone tools from multiple layers of the cave. The scientists found that most of the tools were between 13,000 and 16,000 years old. However, 239 artefacts unearthed from the deepest layer of the cave dated back an astonishing 30,000 years!
Part Ⅱ 拓展阅读训练
刷阅读理解
While the genetic material gained in the cave was only plant and animal DNA, the team did find evidence of sulphur, potassium and zinc elements that could indicate human activities such as killing animals. Dr Ardelean says the absence of human DNA confirms that the early people visited the cave for short periods of time.
The researchers are unsure of the ancient humans’ origins or the path they took to get to America. They guess the groups were tribes (部落) who moved from place to place and went extinct at some point during their migrations. Dr Ardelean says, “We don’t know who they were, where they came from or where they went. They’re a complete enigma. We falsely assume that the native populations in the Americas today are direct descendants from the earliest Americans, but now we don’t think that is the case.” Archaeologist Loren Davis, from Oregon State University, is unsure that the artefacts recovered are tools. The researcher says, “If it’s true that people were in Zacatecas 32,000 years ago, that changes everything—it more than doubles the time people have been in the Americas. I’m not going to say it’s impossible, but if all they found are broken rocks without any hard evidence, it’s natural for people to challenge the conclusion.”

Cloning is defined as using the cells of one living human, plant or animal, to create another duplicate (复制的) one. A cloned subject will be the same as its parent. This technology could be useful for laboratory studies and for creating satisfying animals. __1__
One of the biggest disadvantages of cloning is that the technology is still so uncertain. Dolly the sheep, the first mammalian clone, was born in 1996. While she was initially successful, she died young of a disease not normally seen in sheep of her age. __2__
Losing gene diversity is another disadvantage of cloning. Gene diversity is what keeps an entire species from being wiped out by a singular virus. __3__ If gene diversity is lost due to excessive cloning, there are no mutations to allow some of the cloned group to survive a newly introduced disease.
Another of the disadvantages of cloning is that there are a lot of moral considerations that would cause most people to protest. __4__ Another concern is the treatment of clones. Clones would have the same needs as non clones of their species. Humane treatment guidelines would still apply.

A.This is due to the lack of gene diversity.
B.One of these ethical concerns is that cloning is unnatural.
C.There is always a risk of cloning technology being abused.
D.There are many advantages of cloning, for example, curing certain diseases.
E.However, there are several disadvantages of cloning that should be considered.

Exercise 1 刷阅读理解
A
体裁:议论文 题材:自然环境
[全国新高考Ⅰ2022]Like most of us, I try to be mindful of food that goes to waste. The arugula (芝麻菜) was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roast chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with a dinner invitation. I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, the arugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; I could have made six salads with what I threw out.
In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, “food waste goes against the moral grain,” as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month’s cover story. It’s jaw dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown away—from “ugly” (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to large amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.
Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and other resources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem. In fact, Royte writes, “if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world.”
Part Ⅲ 单元限时作业
Exercise 1 刷阅读理解
If that’s hard to understand, let’s keep it as simple as the arugula at the back of my refrigerator. Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time—but for him, it’s more like 12 boxes of donated strawberries nearing their last days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C., which recovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered more than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished (有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And the strawberries Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use in meals down the road.
Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don’t think. “Everyone can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more food than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not include the side dish you won’t eat,” Curtin says.

体裁:说明文 题材:科学研究
A robot with a sense of touch may one day feel “pain”, both its own physical pain and the sympathy for the pain of its human companions. Such touchy feely robots are still far off, but advances in robotic touch sensing are bringing that possibility closer to reality.
Sensors set in soft, artificial skin that can detect both a gentle touch and a painful strike have been hooked up to a robot that can then signal emotions, Asada reported on February 15 at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. This artificial “pain nervous system”, as Asada calls it, may be a small building block for a machine that could ultimately experience pain. Such a feeling might also allow a robot to “sympathise” with a human companion’s suffering.
Asada, an engineer at Osaka University, and his colleagues have designed touch sensors that reliably pick up a range of touches. In a robot system named Affetto, a realistic looking child’s head, these touch and pain signals can be converted to emotional facial expressions.
A touch sensitive, soft material, as opposed to a rigid metal surface, allows richer interactions between a machine and the world, says neuroscientist Kingson Man of the University of Southern California. According to him, artificial skin “allows the possibility of engagement in truly intelligent ways”.
Part Ⅲ 单元限时作业
Exercise 1 刷阅读理解
Such a system, Asada says, might ultimately lead to robots that can recognise the pain of others, a valuable skill for robots designed to help care for people in need, the elderly, for instance.
But there is an important distinction between a robot that responds in a predictable way to a painful strike and a robot that’s able to compute an internal feeling accurately, says Damasio, a neuroscientist also at the University of Southern California. A robot with sensors that can detect touch and pain is “along the lines of a robot, for example, that smiles when you talk to it,” Damasio says. “It’s a device for communication of a machine with a human.” While that’s an interesting development, “it’s not the same thing” as a robot designed to compute some sort of internal experiences, he says.

Exercise 1 刷阅读理解
1.What do we know about the “pain nervous system”
A.It is named Affetto by scientists.
B.It is a set of complicated sensors.
C.It is able to signal different emotions.
D.It combines sensors and artificial skin.
2.What does the underlined word “converted” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Delivered. B.Translated.
C.Attached. D.Adapted.

Joel stared at the ground. Rather, he stared at what was lying on the ground: a robotic glove. It was made of metal, with black and yellow paint. Joel looked around his backyard. How did a robotic glove end up next to his dad’s vegetable garden
In any case, Joel had found it. And no one else was around.
That meant only one thing: finders keepers. Wasn’t that how finders keepers worked If you found something and couldn’t find the owner, it was yours.
The robotic glove was now Joel’s. Picking up the glove, Joel realised it wasn’t as heavy as he expected it to be. Even though it was much bigger than his own hand, he decided to try it on.
He slipped his hand inside and felt the machine come to life. It beeped (发出哔哔声) three times. Joel moved his fingers, and the robotic fingers moved too. Joel walked over to a large tree branch that had fallen in his yard and wrapped the robotic fingers around it. He lifted the branch. It should have been heavy, but with the glove it was no heavier than a small branch.

Now, what was he going to do with it
Joel’s mum was inside rearranging the furniture. He could walk in and say “Do you need a hand with that ” before easily picking up the couch and setting it somewhere else.
At the library, he could say “Let me help.” and carry in a tall stack of boxes filled with books. At the park, he could say “How about we eat lunch over there ” and carry the picnic table to a shady spot.
Everything would feel as light as a pencil. He’d feel like a superhero.
But first, he wanted to show his dad what he’d found. He started running towards the front yard. That’s when he heard someone call, “Has anyone seen my robotic glove ” Joel stopped short.

Everyone looked at each other—and then everyone looked at the glove. Mr Shore handed it over to Joel with a giant smile. “Would you like to use it ” “Yes, please.” Joel’s smile was as big as Mr Shore’s. He slipped into the glove and the couch was as light as a pencil.
